You NEED to be printing your photos!! Here's why.. - YouTube

Channel: Peter McKinnon

[0]
what's up everybody Peter MacKinnon here
[1]
and today we're talking about why you
[3]
you need to be printing the shots
[6]
there's so many reasons why we're going
[8]
to get into them now so let's roll that
[11]
intro you guys remember the darkroom
[18]
little red light in there super cool
[20]
felt like you were a Navy SEAL on a
[22]
mission coming up through the all the
[24]
chemicals that smelled so good you'd put
[26]
the paper in watch it exposed hang it up
[28]
to dry you were in control of the future
[30]
of your own photos it was like the
[32]
second half of photography the first
[34]
half was going out there and shooting it
[36]
you know find the film and putting your
[37]
camera doing the thing the second half
[39]
was coming back and making that image
[40]
come to life and I feel like over the
[42]
years obviously that's shifted now that
[45]
we're in the digital realm of things and
[46]
it's just fire off a thousand and yep
[49]
boom Wi-Fi them to your computer and
[51]
Lightroom that Sh is up and then boom
[54]
airdrop to the IG we're double tapping
[56]
all day long that process is gone gone
[58]
are the days 2017 folks however that to
[62]
me that sucks
[63]
that's unfortunate where I love
[65]
Instagram and I love digital and I love
[67]
where everything's gone some of you
[69]
watching may even be like I've never
[70]
even stepped foot in the darkroom I've
[72]
just heard about it before it looks cool
[73]
but they don't even do it at my school
[75]
anymore or college maybe if you go for
[77]
photography you might have experienced
[80]
that kind of thing it just kind of makes
[81]
me uh it kind of got me thinking this
[83]
weekend I thought to myself you know
[85]
people don't print their work enough and
[87]
there are so many benefits that come
[89]
from printing your stuff out so let's
[91]
run through a few of those benefits
[92]
benefit number one are understanding
[95]
just by printing your shots you
[96]
understand your photography so much
[99]
better they're going to see things that
[100]
you would never have seen if your photos
[102]
weren't printed it looks completely
[103]
different when you see a print in person
[106]
that you're holding in your hands versus
[108]
that same photo backlit on a five-k
[111]
monitor with LEDs behind it making it
[114]
look nice and bright totally different
[115]
you might be like wow I actually
[117]
severely under expose this or who I was
[119]
to actually sell this to someone both
[121]
blacks need to come way up that I can't
[123]
even see the foreground that I could
[125]
very easily see on my computer I don't
[127]
even super interesting stuff so
[129]
understanding your own work
[130]
official you guys know that we've talked
[132]
about that you know that understanding
[134]
shows you where your camera might lack
[135]
or maybe where your camera excels you
[137]
might get that print back and say oh
[139]
this is exactly everything I needed to
[141]
be this is perfect I love the way these
[142]
look online I love the way they look
[144]
when I post them on Instagram I printed
[146]
13 by 1917 by 22 4 by 6 I printed all
[149]
these different versions they look just
[151]
as good I'm just as happy yes or it
[153]
might be the latter you might be like
[155]
yeah the stuff looks good on Instagram
[157]
horrible prints all the points of detail
[159]
in that photo that I thought were really
[160]
really good ended up being super muddy
[162]
and just not in focus as much as I
[165]
thought they were it also comes down to
[166]
the printer you're using but we'll talk
[168]
about that a little bit the second point
[169]
I kind of want to bring up is it's
[171]
printing your shots darkroom whatever
[173]
it's kind of like the second half of
[176]
photography you know you used to go out
[177]
shoot come back and then process your
[180]
images in the darkroom and then you
[181]
would frame them or give them away or
[183]
sell them or whatever but that has been
[186]
replaced now like I said with digital
[188]
where we don't really come back to the
[190]
darkroom now that darkroom is now Adobe
[192]
Lightroom and then we just upload our
[194]
shots to social media and when we carry
[196]
on but half the fun a lot of the
[199]
satisfaction that comes with photography
[201]
and you guys know you're out there
[203]
shooting a landscape it's nice and calm
[205]
and soothing and therapeutic or the lens
[208]
it's hectic but you get a rush depending
[210]
what you're shooting you come back and
[211]
you're just like what a great time
[213]
there's a whole other half to that that
[215]
comes with printing your own work that's
[217]
like as equally as fun and satisfying as
[220]
the whole first part of shooting and you
[222]
don't get that when you don't print your
[223]
stuff being able to pick the paper that
[225]
you want or the matte or glossy or
[227]
different thicknesses of paper and maybe
[229]
pick a frame that suits the shot the
[230]
best that matches the colors of the
[232]
tones in your photo and then printing
[234]
out a couple samples and getting a small
[235]
version and a huge version of being able
[237]
to see that print come to life into
[239]
something physical that you can hold and
[242]
then put into a frame and sell to
[244]
someone or give away or hang in your own
[246]
office for inspiration or hang in
[247]
someone else's office so they can be
[249]
inspired that's a whole second side to
[251]
photography that that we miss out on if
[254]
we're not printing our own shots now the
[255]
argument is do we print our shots at
[257]
home or do we print them somewhere else
[260]
I mean there's a whole slew of websites
[262]
goes you just do a quick google where I
[263]
print my photos they're going to find
[265]
tons of results notes labs do a great
[267]
job you can send your stuff out pick
[269]
what size you want they'll ship it back
[271]
to the turnaround time when that sucks
[273]
pretty good so if you can't afford or
[275]
you don't have any interest and actually
[277]
doing your own home printing those
[278]
options are still there and I recommend
[280]
you try those options out because it's
[282]
still the same all those principles all
[284]
these ideas still apply to taking those
[287]
photos out of the package once it
[288]
arrives in the mail and seeing your own
[290]
physical work as something tangible
[293]
instead of just a file that can be
[295]
deleted that people are just double
[296]
tapping on their iPhones or androids or
[298]
whatever these days just picture this
[300]
like you go out you take a photo that
[303]
you love that you're super proud of you
[305]
come back you edit it in Lightroom it
[307]
looks phenomenal you just love it it
[309]
ends there for the most part you put it
[311]
up on Instagram you're done you stored
[313]
away on your on your hard drive and the
[314]
cloud wherever you're done you move on
[316]
two months down the line you haven't
[318]
looked at that photo for weeks and weeks
[319]
and weeks it hasn't benefited anybody
[321]
hasn't benefited you everyone has liked
[323]
it it's come and gone on Instagram on
[325]
Facebook on Twitter whatever it's
[326]
essentially a part of your digital past
[329]
now but instead of doing that imagine
[331]
you also uploaded it but now you've
[332]
printed it out you've taken that extra
[334]
time to find the right paper or find the
[336]
right eggs right printer if I'm the
[338]
right lab you get it back where you hom
[340]
print it you're holding it in your hands
[342]
now you sign it you number it you put it
[346]
in that frame you wrap it up and give it
[348]
to someone else
[349]
it's incredible not only is it
[351]
incredible that other people now have
[353]
your artwork hanging in their home but
[354]
having other people's artwork hanging in
[356]
your home why not hang your own artwork
[358]
in your home so many people just go to
[359]
Ikea and buy whatever photos that
[362]
they've decided to sell and print onto
[364]
canvas I see so many people when I'm at
[366]
IKEA flipping through the canvases oh
[369]
look another picture of New York it's
[370]
all black and white and oh the cabs are
[373]
yellow they're the only colorful thing
[375]
in the photo I love it and they buy that
[377]
print if we're buying prints and I see
[379]
we use like a collective of people if we
[382]
are buying prints from IKEA to hang in
[384]
our homes why not hang your own artwork
[387]
that you're proud of you went up into
[388]
the world to shoot and create why not it
[391]
has become a digital world but we still
[394]
have the ability to
[395]
create physical and tangible goods from
[398]
our digital art and the main point of
[401]
this video is that I urge you to try it
[403]
even if it's a printer that you already
[405]
own if it's a printer that you want to
[406]
buy if it's a lab that you're going to
[408]
send your stuff to I urge you to try it
[410]
out because it really helps not only
[413]
round you out as a better photographer
[414]
it just helps you understand photography
[416]
better and yourself better and it's just
[418]
part of the process that's a little bit
[420]
lost these days I really think that you
[422]
guys would have a great time trying it
[424]
out and exploring that side of
[426]
photography that not many people do
[427]
anymore this weighs 80 pounds I did this
[435]
the wrong way I should have left this on
[437]
the floor lifted it onto the desk oh my
[447]
goodness need a break
[453]
need a break it's a big printer very big
[467]
printer look at the amount of ink
[470]
cartridges that go in here and in the
[476]
spirit of practicing when I preach and
[478]
kind of connecting with you know what I
[479]
used to do in photography I'm actually
[481]
going to give away a print in this
[482]
episode I'm going to set up this printer
[484]
that I just got that I'm super pumped
[485]
about it prints beautiful huge large
[488]
scale format prints I'm going to print
[489]
one on video with you guys I'm going to
[491]
sign a number and I'm going to give that
[492]
print away so all you got to do just
[494]
comment below why you want it and where
[497]
you would hang it and then I'm just
[499]
going to pick someone in the next
[500]
episode of which you know I'm going to
[501]
roll out up stick it into two I'm going
[502]
to throw it into the air and an eagle is
[504]
gonna scoop down and grab it with the
[507]
challenge and if you're not fly I got a
[508]
little carried away there what I meant
[510]
to say is I'm going to mail it to you
[511]
and you can have a little original one
[514]
of one print that I'm going to do for
[516]
you guys so it's no way of saying thanks
[517]
for watching I appreciate you guys the
[519]
community that we have built here in the
[521]
amount of time that we've built it is
[523]
something that I am just incredibly
[524]
proud of and grateful for each and every
[526]
one of you and I think that we can
[528]
continue in
[529]
inspiring each other every two comments
[531]
and coming up with ways to just be
[533]
better photographers better artists
[535]
better storytellers and just enjoy this
[537]
whole process in this this whole art
[540]
form that is you know the visual medium
[542]
of photography that we all love so much
[545]
I said that with like way too many words
[547]
I could have just said photography that
[549]
we all love so much also I want to say
[551]
I'm going to start doing print drops
[553]
every now and then I'm going to print
[554]
some of my favorite photos because it's
[556]
something I've been wanting to do for a
[558]
long time and in making this video I had
[560]
so much fun and it really brought back a
[561]
sense of nostalgia and urgency to print
[565]
my work because I wanted to be out there
[566]
so maybe I'll take five of my favorite
[568]
photos at print three each of them sign
[570]
and number them the link will be below
[572]
I'm going to try and get that rollin out
[573]
soon and I'll try to keep it updated as
[575]
much as I can okay guys so that is it
[577]
for me I hope you guys enjoyed this
[578]
episode I mean I have a lot of fun
[580]
making it it brought back a lot of good
[581]
memories and it's some stuff that I
[583]
really think needs to be taken into
[585]
account and i 100% believe you guys will
[588]
enjoy the process of printing your own
[590]
stuff okay so comment below I want to
[593]
send this print off to somebody thank
[595]
you so much for watching like this video
[596]
if you enjoyed it hit that thumbs up
