Public.com Review | UP TO $300 FREE STOCK | Walkthrough | Pros/Cons - YouTube
Channel: Logan Allec
[0]
all right everybody i'm logan alec i'm a
[2]
cpa and today i'm reviewing the public
[4]
investing app this is one of those apps
[6]
that's currently giving away free money
[8]
a free slice of stock for signing up and
[12]
opening an account if
[13]
after you watch this video you think
[15]
public is a good app for you
[17]
you're welcome to use my link in the
[18]
description below to get that sign up
[20]
bonus
[20]
this review is not sponsored by the way
[22]
public doesn't even know i'm doing this
[24]
yes i have a referral link
[25]
but this video is not sponsored it is
[27]
completely objective
[29]
and me just sharing my opinion on the
[31]
public app
[32]
as a user of it i will share with you
[34]
how the app works how to buy stock in
[36]
the app
[37]
and then later in the video i'll provide
[38]
a summary of the pros and cons the
[40]
things i like about public
[42]
and the things i don't like so much
[43]
about public so be sure to stick around
[45]
for that
[46]
and just as a reminder if you like free
[47]
stocks you can check out the video i
[49]
made recently
[50]
where i tell you 11 places that are
[52]
giving away free stock right now
[55]
link up here at the top of the screen
[56]
let's get into this public review
[58]
what is public public claims to be a
[60]
whole new way to
[61]
invest in that it makes the stock market
[63]
social it says you can follow
[65]
other investors discover companies to
[67]
believe in and invest with any amount of
[69]
money
[70]
so what does this mean this whole social
[72]
aspect
[73]
of investing well let's start from the
[75]
top you download public
[76]
it's pretty easy use my link in the
[78]
description below
[80]
click install click get started input
[82]
your phone number
[84]
they send you an authentication code you
[86]
input that you input your name
[88]
and username your email address you
[90]
create a password choose a profile photo
[92]
and then here's where the free stock
[94]
comes in unlike other investing apps
[96]
like weeble or robinhood or
[97]
first trade or doe that give you a
[100]
specific share of stock
[101]
right an entire share of stock public's
[103]
promotion is to give you up to
[105]
five dollars of a particular stock a
[107]
fractional share which public calls
[109]
slices
[110]
so when i signed up i picked tesla and
[112]
then you actually have to set up your
[113]
brokerage account
[114]
uh birth date citizenship status marital
[117]
status number dependence
[118]
these are all very typical questions
[120]
you're asked when setting up a brokerage
[121]
account
[122]
your employment address uh you know your
[124]
address your full name your social
[126]
security number and agreeing to the
[128]
terms and conditions
[129]
this is all very typical uh these
[132]
this is all required information to set
[134]
up a brokerage account in the united
[135]
states so don't be surprised by this
[137]
then public asks you about your
[139]
investing goals and experience your
[140]
annual income and net worth and then you
[142]
make your first deposit you can easily
[143]
link your bank account
[145]
they use plaid like many other platforms
[147]
i was able to link my
[148]
chase checking account within minutes i
[150]
made my initial deposit
[152]
of 100 which even though it hadn't
[155]
transferred yet
[156]
uh the public still gave me buying power
[158]
immediately of a hundred dollars
[160]
then public asks you to pick your
[161]
interest what you're interested in
[163]
this informs the news you'll see on your
[165]
home feed in public i'm going to show
[166]
you that in a second
[168]
and then that's it now you can check out
[169]
the public app you're all ready to go
[171]
so here it is welcome to public on the
[173]
companies you believe in
[175]
in the middle of the screen there you
[176]
see ticker symbols for companies that
[178]
public thinks
[179]
based on what you said you might be
[181]
interested in
[182]
and then below that you see posts that
[184]
look um kind of a lot like tweets
[186]
honestly from people in the public
[188]
community
[188]
they even have this uh blue check mark
[191]
thing going on
[192]
although here it looks like a black
[194]
check mark encircled in blue
[196]
anyway that top one here is from katy
[197]
perry and no this is not katie with a y
[200]
perry this is katie with an ie perry
[202]
she's the vice president of marketing at
[204]
public um so basically these posts are
[206]
just people sharing their thoughts about
[208]
the market about investing about
[209]
particular stocks
[210]
you can click on their names and see
[212]
their profile in their portfolio here is
[214]
someone named nadia vanderhall
[216]
she owns a marketing company you can see
[218]
her portfolio these are the stocks she's
[220]
invested in in public you can see her
[222]
watch list
[223]
uh those watch lists are the stocks
[224]
she's keeping an eye on
[226]
themes are just broad general categories
[228]
she's interested in
[230]
uh that have you know stocks in them you
[232]
can click a theme like space exploration
[233]
and see all the stocks in there
[235]
and of course on people's profiles you
[237]
can see all their posts that they've
[238]
posted in public now
[240]
you probably have no idea of who katie
[242]
with an ie perry
[243]
or nadia vander hall were before he
[245]
watched this video but one cool thing
[247]
about public is that you know there are
[249]
celebrities on here
[250]
you can see what they've invested in
[251]
through public if you tap the magnifying
[253]
glass
[253]
you can scroll through people to follow
[256]
here is adult contemporary sensation of
[258]
the last century michael bolton
[260]
um there's also shaquille o'neal
[263]
now i don't want to imply that because
[265]
these people are celebrities
[267]
you know you should pay particular
[268]
attention to their investment picks i
[270]
mean come on michael bolton's a musician
[272]
you know shaq is an athlete uh you know
[275]
i don't want to imply that oh their
[276]
stock put
[277]
their stock picks must be good just
[278]
because they're celebrities but it's
[280]
just interesting right i mean
[281]
obviously many people like to know
[282]
what's going on in celebrities lives
[284]
about their dogs or whatever uh well
[287]
here's an opportunity
[288]
to get a a glimpse into celebrities
[290]
lives in terms of investing and just to
[292]
be clear
[293]
the portfolio on people's profiles in
[295]
public is just the stocks they own using
[296]
the public app
[297]
okay it's not their entire uh stock in
[300]
order investment portfolio
[302]
i also saw a youtuber on here roberto
[303]
blake youtube is about youtube and how
[305]
to grow a youtube channel so it's kind
[306]
of cool to see him on here
[308]
i watch this stuff a lot i'll tag him in
[310]
the description below
[311]
if you want to check out his channel all
[312]
right what else if you click the little
[314]
present little gift icon at the bottom
[315]
of the screen in the center
[316]
you can get your invite link to invite
[318]
others to public
[320]
you're both rewarded with a free slice
[322]
of stock if someone signs up using your
[323]
link
[324]
next to the present icon is a little
[326]
messages uh arrow
[327]
little messages box because you can
[328]
directly message other users in private
[330]
then you have a profile icon at the
[332]
bottom right where you can click account
[334]
details and see more information about
[336]
your account
[337]
one more thing i want to mention is the
[338]
public account settings if you click the
[340]
gear in the top right
[341]
you'll see a bunch of things okay scroll
[343]
down and you'll see where you can
[344]
download your statements and tax
[346]
documents
[347]
where you can manage your you know your
[348]
cash transfers to and from public
[351]
you can click update account update your
[352]
account your profile picture
[354]
your bio and whatnot but the one i
[356]
really want to draw your attention to
[358]
is dividend reinvestment if you click on
[360]
that that is where you can tell public
[362]
what to do with dividends earned in your
[364]
public account
[365]
i believe the default when i signed up
[367]
was sent to uh
[369]
simply deposits dividends into your
[371]
public account the bottom one
[372]
and not invest them that's the bottom
[374]
option here but i actually prefer
[376]
to have my dividends i earned from a
[378]
particular stock reinvested into that
[379]
stock
[380]
right so my money is always making money
[382]
so i chose the auto
[383]
reinvest my dividends option here okay
[385]
so that's an overview of the public app
[388]
but now let's talk about how the heck
[389]
you actually buy a stock in public it's
[391]
actually super easy
[392]
you just go the magnifying glass in the
[394]
search bar at the top you type the name
[396]
of the company you want to invest in
[397]
this case want to invest in amazon type
[400]
to amazon
[401]
it pops up you click trade in the bottom
[403]
right then click
[404]
buy and then you can choose how much you
[407]
want to buy
[408]
you can do a custom amount by choosing a
[410]
different amount
[411]
or you can just go with one of these
[413]
round options they suggest
[414]
uh i invested my entire 100 cash balance
[417]
into amazon
[418]
and the cool thing is with public and
[421]
with these fractional
[422]
shares now this isn't unique to public
[423]
by the way other brokerages do this
[425]
um but here's how these fractional
[427]
shares work right the share price of
[428]
amazon right now is like three thousand
[430]
dollars
[430]
but with public you can just invest
[432]
whatever amount of money you have
[434]
even if it's just a dollar right public
[436]
doesn't have any minimums so that's cool
[437]
right you have a dollar
[438]
you can invest in amazon um note that i
[441]
was not given the option to place a
[442]
limit order on this trade
[444]
because i was investing in fractional
[445]
shares if i had enough money in my
[446]
public account to buy one entire share
[448]
of amazon
[448]
public would have given me the option to
[450]
set a limit price on my buy and a limit
[453]
price is the maximum price i'd be
[454]
willing to pay for
[456]
uh you know a share of stock but i did
[457]
not have that option
[459]
because my order was of a fractional
[460]
share right
[462]
that's not a public thing that's that's
[463]
a stock market thing all right now let's
[465]
talk pros and cons of the public
[467]
investing app let's start with the pros
[469]
for number one public is free there's no
[471]
monthly subscription fee
[472]
there's no commissions on your stock
[474]
purchases it's free to use and sign up
[476]
for number two they give you a sign up
[478]
bonus like i mentioned earlier if you
[479]
use my link in the description below
[481]
you will get a free slice of stock from
[483]
public when you sign up
[484]
using my link pro number three um i
[487]
talked about this previously but there
[488]
are no minimums with public
[490]
uh public like many other investing apps
[493]
these days is making investing in the
[494]
stock market accessible to everyone
[496]
pro number four fractional shares this
[499]
is another thing i talked about
[500]
previously
[500]
but even if you just deposit a dollar
[502]
into public uh
[504]
you know you can buy a fractional share
[505]
of a ton of different companies amazon
[507]
apple tesla etcetera right now finally
[509]
pro number five the social aspect
[511]
this can be a pro as well as a con i'll
[513]
talk about the con of this in the next
[514]
uh
[515]
in a little bit but just the way the app
[517]
is set up when you open up public for
[518]
the first time what do you see
[520]
what's on your uh your home screen
[521]
public it's not your account i mean yeah
[523]
it tells you how your account is doing
[525]
at the top
[526]
but what you really see and what the
[527]
focus really is here at the public app
[528]
what you see on the home screen
[530]
mostly is the social interaction right
[532]
people sharing their thoughts on the
[533]
market
[534]
on various stocks and whatnot and that's
[536]
unique no other investment app that i
[538]
know of does this as well
[539]
as public is doing so why could this be
[542]
a good thing well i look at it like this
[543]
right if you're addicted to social media
[546]
and many of us are
[547]
including myself okay guilty as charged
[550]
then i think it's a great thing
[551]
maybe maybe instead of getting your
[553]
social media fixed by just scrolling
[555]
through instagram looking at
[556]
you know the pictures of the new lizard
[558]
of some random person you said hi to
[559]
three times in high school
[560]
you can get that social media fix on
[562]
public by joining this conversation
[564]
about investing
[564]
the public conversation about stocks and
[567]
the market
[568]
now this can also be a bad thing okay so
[570]
let's talk about the cons
[571]
call number one the social aspect of
[574]
this
[574]
now i just said that this could be a
[576]
good thing and yes it's absolutely true
[577]
but if you've been following my channel
[578]
for a while if you've taken my my
[580]
prosper course that's my personal
[582]
finance course link in the description
[583]
below
[584]
you know my main approach when it comes
[585]
to investing is set it and forget it
[588]
because i don't really want you fiddling
[589]
with your portfolio
[591]
all the time and that's for a couple
[592]
reasons one is that you'll probably have
[594]
higher returns in the long run
[596]
by just setting and forgetting you're
[598]
investing rather than becoming obsessed
[600]
with tracking the stock market
[602]
every day you know every hour uh and the
[605]
second reason is because i'd rather you
[606]
spend time doing something more
[607]
productive with your time
[609]
you know like working on your career
[610]
your trade starting a side hustle or
[612]
something like that
[613]
to generate more income for you to dump
[615]
into your set and forget investments
[617]
rather than spending hours and hours of
[619]
your life every week tracking
[621]
the market and there's another component
[622]
here in public with the whole celebrity
[624]
aspect you can see like celebrities
[625]
investment picks in public
[627]
one might be tempted to think oh you
[629]
know shaq invested in this so i'm going
[631]
to invest in this too
[632]
right when that you know that that might
[634]
be spurious logic
[636]
so what's my point take the public
[638]
social media aspect with a grain of salt
[640]
that's all i'm saying okay call number
[642]
two no desktop trading
[643]
all trading must be done on the app i
[644]
know that's not a big deal for many of
[646]
you but many people just like to do
[647]
their investing on their computer
[648]
because it's faster
[649]
you know and they can see more on screen
[651]
you won't get that with public it is
[653]
entirely app-based
[654]
call number three public only offers
[656]
taxable brokerage accounts at this time
[658]
you can't open up an ira at public you
[660]
can't open up any other
[662]
account type at public than a taxable
[664]
brokerage account
[665]
call number four public does not offer
[667]
margin trading at this time that's where
[668]
you can borrow against your portfolio
[670]
to invest even more money in the stock
[672]
market obviously uh that's a risky
[674]
strategy all
[675]
investing carries risk but of course
[677]
borrowing to invest
[678]
amplifies that risk albeit along with
[681]
the potential reward and return on your
[682]
investment
[683]
and finally call number five there's no
[685]
real auto invest feature with public you
[687]
have to manually
[688]
deposit money into public then make your
[691]
trade
[691]
that's obviously very time intensive and
[694]
that's not really conducive to building
[696]
out a long
[697]
term investment strategy and portfolio
[700]
so would i recommend public sure
[703]
if you're attracted to the community
[705]
aspect of the app the social aspect of
[706]
the app if that's something that appeals
[708]
to you
[709]
and will motivate you to invest if
[710]
that's something that you can see
[711]
yourself engaging in responsibly
[714]
and not getting super addicted to it and
[716]
buying and selling stocks all day
[718]
then yeah i think this can be a fun app
[720]
to get started investing
[721]
but i'm personally not making public my
[723]
main investing app
[724]
right to me this is this is a fun
[726]
investing app it's where
[728]
where i might put my fun money right
[729]
about five percent of my portfolio is
[731]
fun money
[732]
individual stocks kind of risky stocks
[734]
that's where i take my big risks
[735]
right i might do more of that in public
[737]
but it just doesn't have the platform of
[739]
like a fidelity and that's where the
[740]
vast majority of my stock portfolio is
[742]
where i can set up every account from a
[744]
taxable brokerage account to an ira to a
[746]
529 to an hsa
[748]
right and fidelity you know it has all
[750]
these research features and tools public
[751]
doesn't have that
[752]
nor does it offer the features of a
[754]
platform like m1 finance which is
[756]
becoming my favorite investing app and
[757]
brokerage to use these days i'm putting
[759]
more
[759]
and more money into m1 finance every day
[762]
that is where i can automate my
[763]
investing
[764]
and truly build out my portfolio on
[766]
autopilot speaking of which if you have
[768]
not yet seen my m1 finance review
[770]
uh you will see a link to it on the next
[772]
screen i highly encourage you to check
[774]
out that video as well
[776]
there's also a link on the next screen
[777]
in my video of all the places
[779]
where you can get free stocks right now
[780]
yes public is on the list
[782]
please be sure to watch both of those
[783]
videos and in the comments section of
[785]
them
[785]
let me know what you think and i will
[787]
see you over there in those videos
[790]
[Music]
[798]
bye
[810]
you
