PPP Loans Sapped by Big Businesses | The Daily Social Distancing Show - YouTube

Channel: The Daily Show with Trevor Noah

[0]
last month Congress passed the Paycheck
[2]
protection program which set aside three
[5]
hundred and forty two billion dollars to
[7]
help small businesses through the
[8]
pandemic shutdown now before most small
[12]
businesses could get any help that money
[14]
disappeared faster than really Giuliani
[16]
and direct sunlight and because of this
[18]
Congress has had to come back with a
[21]
second round of funding with three
[22]
hundred and ten additional billion
[25]
dollars but when it came time to hand it
[27]
out yesterday things got off to another
[30]
rocky start this morning millions of
[32]
small businesses are still waiting for
[34]
relief as delays technical glitches and
[37]
overwhelming demand caused the Small
[39]
Business Administration's portal to
[41]
crash within minutes of relaunching the
[43]
new loan funding program the SBA
[45]
revealing twice as many people tried to
[48]
access the program on Monday than at any
[50]
time during the first round of loans
[52]
many lenders reported not being able to
[54]
file applications for clients because
[57]
the computer system kept crashing god
[59]
dammit man how come it seems like every
[63]
time the government builds a website it
[64]
crashes immediately like I've never had
[68]
this problem with my website pickles and
[70]
socks calm and don't tell me it's
[73]
because nobody wants to see photos of
[74]
pickles wearing socks it's adorable I
[77]
mean look at that look at this he's not
[79]
supposed to be wearing that suck now
[88]
look computer errors can be fixed
[90]
alright they probably just need to turn
[92]
it off and turn it back on again that
[94]
never works but there's a bigger problem
[95]
with the PPP it turns out that one
[98]
reason small businesses haven't been
[100]
able to get their money is because all
[102]
the big businesses have been snapping it
[104]
up we've learned that in round one of
[106]
the PPP a whopping 870 million went to
[110]
publicly traded companies at least 75
[113]
companies that were helped are so big
[115]
that they're publicly traded and some
[118]
had market values greater than a hundred
[120]
million dollars some of the nation's
[122]
largest restaurant chains are facing
[124]
backlash Shake Shack returning 10
[127]
million dollars it received after public
[129]
outcry the Los Angeles Lakers
[131]
organization
[132]
is the latest not-so-small business to
[134]
return a government loan the team
[136]
received more than four and a half
[137]
million dollars in the first round of
[139]
loans Lakers are one of the NBA's most
[142]
profitable franchises worth more than
[144]
four billion dollars yeah it turns out
[147]
the companies who are getting a lot of
[149]
the small business loan money are small
[152]
in the same way that Joe exotic is chill
[155]
I'll tell you about Carol Baskin let me
[158]
tell you and how come I can't say the N
[160]
word even the Los Angeles Lakers got
[162]
some of that small business money and I
[164]
don't care what anybody says
[165]
the Lakers do not need four million
[168]
dollars all right the Knicks need four
[170]
million dollars to bribe their fans to
[172]
act like they don't see what's going on
[174]
now it is important to remember that
[176]
although what these big companies did
[177]
was shitty it wasn't illegal right they
[180]
saw a chance a chance to get money and
[182]
they took it which is what companies are
[184]
always gonna do companies going company
[186]
y'all you know how we all say that no we
[188]
don't my question is why didn't the
[190]
government come up with regulations to
[192]
make sure that the money for small
[194]
businesses actually went to small
[196]
businesses it's like if you put down a
[199]
bowl of food for a small dog you have to
[202]
get the big dog out of the room everyone
[203]
knows that right if you just asked the
[205]
big dog not to eat the food the dog is
[207]
gonna be like oh yeah think about it but
[209]
I think better when I'm full so let me
[211]
just eat some of the food and then I'll
[212]
let you know
[212]
so you see instead of keeping the big
[214]
dogs out the Treasury Department just
[216]
left the whole thing up to the banks and
[217]
then the banks did what the banks do
[220]
which is screw over the little guys four
[222]
major banks are already facing a lawsuit
[225]
alleging they prioritized bigger
[228]
customers because those PPP loans
[230]
yielded bigger fees for the banks the
[233]
program allows banks to prioritize
[235]
existing customers particularly those
[238]
with large credit lines over small
[240]
businesses or new applicants nearly
[242]
eight thousand five hundred of JP
[244]
Morgan's private and commercial bank
[246]
customers who applied or assisted by
[248]
what some called a concierge banking
[250]
service if you have 25 million dollars
[252]
and you go to a large bank the way that
[255]
they're gonna get your account is with
[256]
White Glove service that your corner
[258]
shop just is not going to have and that
[261]
means that you don't wait on hold you
[264]
go through a web portal that doesn't
[265]
work you call someone up who picks up
[267]
the phone and scoots you to the front of
[269]
the line yeah you can't leave the loan
[272]
decisions up to the banks you can't let
[275]
them take government's money and then
[277]
decide who it goes to because unlike a
[279]
government a bank is a business it's
[282]
always gonna take care of its top
[284]
customers first so big companies weren't
[286]
waiting in line to get loans they had
[288]
direct access to the cash it's the same
[290]
way evanka has direct access to trump
[293]
while eric has to call and set up an
[295]
appointment by the way Eric they're
[297]
always busy they will always be busy so
[299]
that's what went wrong with the first
[301]
round of small business loans and
[302]
hopefully hopefully the Treasury
[304]
Department's new rules for the second
[306]
round of money will ensure that the
[308]
loans go to the companies that actually
[310]
need it the most but there's another big
[312]
aspect to the story that a lot of people
[314]
are overlooking many small businesses in
[316]
America are owned by women and black
[319]
people and you know what many black
[321]
owned and women-owned businesses don't
[323]
have pre-existing relationships with
[326]
banks so if the banks didn't know you
[329]
before coronavirus you're definitely not
[332]
gonna be on their radar now which is why
[335]
experts fear that up to 90 percent of
[337]
women and minority-owned businesses
[339]
could be shut out of the loan program
[342]
now I don't know how you fix this
[344]
program overnight but if you're a woman
[346]
or a minority who owns a small business
[348]
I suggest you start practicing your jump
[350]
shot because that might be the only way
[352]
you get some of this government cash
[353]
well that's our show for tonight before
[356]
we go the covert pandemic has devastated
[359]
communities around the world but
[361]
remember the International Medical Corps
[363]
is helping those communities rebuild and
[366]
recover and if you are able to and you
[368]
would like to help them in their global
[370]
outreach please donate whatever you can
[372]
and if you'd like to support the
[374]
response here at home in New York
[376]
specifically please donate to the NYC
[378]
healthcare heroes who are providing care
[381]
packages to our health care workers
[382]
hospitals and temporary medical
[385]
facilities until tomorrow stay safe out
[388]
there
[388]
wash your hands and don't forget lotion
[391]
can also be used to moisturize the rest
[393]
of your body
