see what do you think we will hear from
[2]
the President on this revisiting the
[5]
April 30th deadline about slowly not
[8]
quickly getting Americans back to work
[11]
on whose advice is he heeding those from
[14]
the medical establishment the economic
[16]
woo what do you know about that I think
[19]
a little bit of all of those obviously
[21]
the medical team is trying to give him
[24]
the best advice about containing the
[25]
virus but you know me I've been saying
[28]
this for a long time and I know there a
[29]
lot in the White House who agree with me
[31]
that we got it got the economy up and
[33]
running quickly because we don't want to
[35]
see more reports like we saw this week
[37]
with six million people signing up for
[39]
unemployment benefits so look I was very
[42]
hardened but what I just heard from
[44]
Blake Burman those are really positive
[46]
things that that they think they can get
[48]
some of the economy opened up by May 1st
[50]
that then we may have flattened out this
[53]
curve a little bit you're seeing that by
[55]
the way reflected in the markets Neal my
[57]
take on this is when you look at what's
[59]
happening with the fluctuation in the
[60]
market I would I would say that about
[63]
80% of the fluctuation in the stock
[65]
market right now is based on what the
[67]
johns hopkins reports are telling us
[69]
about the progress with respect to
[72]
fighting this virus so we got to get the
[75]
economy reopened obviously but we have
[77]
to do it at a very health conscious way
[80]
no I think you're dead-on right about
[82]
doctor doctor I put it 95 percent really
[84]
hinges on ian's we get on the path of
[87]
the virus but having said that seat I
[88]
mean the president will be leading off
[90]
this briefing today and there's been
[92]
some criticism from nullus in the Wall
[94]
Street Journal that he tends to make it
[96]
him about himself and the states too
[99]
long it starts getting in fights with
[102]
reporters The Wall Street Journal cited
[104]
that the president then ripped the Wall
[106]
Street Journal is fake news team at a
[109]
curiosity or a very rational seasoned
[112]
business guy do you think The Wall
[115]
Street Journal is fake news no I don't I
[119]
love that newspaper and I worked there
[122]
for 10 years so I'm a little biased as
[123]
you know Neal but I thought there was
[129]
some pretty sage advice look I love this
[130]
president - I've worked with him
[132]
but I would say this they I think the
[135]
president would be wise to take some of
[137]
that advice to The Wall Street Journal
[138]
he's done an amazing job in these press
[140]
conferences but maybe not doing battle
[143]
with the with the media so often and so
[146]
much and really just tell it the
[147]
American people just want to know what's
[148]
going on and they want to be reassured
[150]
by this president we're gonna solve this
[152]
crisis both Ruth respecter our economy
[155]
and the health crisis that we have right
[157]
now
[157]
and be presidential I'd like to see him
[159]
rise above this and not get in spats
[161]
with the media but you know Donald Trump
[163]
is Donald Trump he's gonna do what he
[165]
wants to do and that's one of the things
[167]
I love about him but I hope that I'm
[169]
glad at least he's reading the
[170]
editorials at The Wall Street Journal
[173]
they're very good at it Earl's right he
[175]
did say that the journal always forgets
[177]
to mention that the ratings for the
[179]
White House press briefings were through
[180]
the roof and is the only way for me to
[182]
escape the fake news and get my points
[184]
across but when he says stuff like that
[187]
Steve about ratings at how he's
[188]
performing and the job that he's doing
[191]
he puts it in a different framework for
[194]
Americans who just want to know hey am i
[196]
safe is this thing gonna kill me right I
[199]
think there's something to that again
[201]
how am I to give advice to this
[203]
President was one of the great political
[205]
I mean he's a great political mind as
[207]
well as an economic leader for our
[208]
country but let me switch gears yeah
[219]
absolutely I think you're right and I
[221]
didn't want to put you on the spot but I
[223]
just wanted to get your thoughts so let
[225]
me step back for this and what we what
[228]
we'll have what will happen now if
[230]
people like their foul cheese say the
[233]
virus will decide this issue in other
[235]
words how quickly we reopen or get back
[238]
to you know business as usual as you
[240]
stress it's it's gonna be a little
[242]
difficult to go back to where we were
[244]
maybe in that direction but dr. Fox you
[248]
seem to say that when all is said and
[250]
done it's it's the virus and its
[252]
progression or slower progression that's
[254]
going to decide it is that is the
[256]
biggest criteria that you know of Steve
[258]
the fact that the the cases have to
[261]
decline for a significant period of time
[264]
so imagine is 14 days
[266]
year before we even entertain easing up
[268]
I think we got to get the economy opened
[272]
up it quickly I really do and the reason
[275]
I do it by the way of course keeping in
[277]
mind the best health information that we
[279]
get but here's my point I'm not a health
[282]
expert I'm an economists doctor pouchy
[285]
is a great health expert but he's not an
[287]
economist I'll tell you this if we keep
[290]
this economy I've seen some experts
[292]
saying we have to keep the economy
[293]
closed through June or July if that
[296]
happens we will have a Great Depression
[298]
there is no way you can keep this
[301]
economic engine the greatest economic
[303]
engine in the history of civilization
[304]
shut down for four months and somehow
[307]
did some of these people think you can
[308]
just flick this the ignition switch and
[310]
the economy starts right up no the
[312]
economic damage will be so severe you're
[315]
gonna have corpses of businesses that
[317]
will never reopen because they've sold
[320]
their assets they have no revenues so we
[322]
have to and one glass point I know we're
[324]
running out of time we have half of the
[326]
economy opened right now Neil you've
[328]
been talking to a lot of people are
[330]
running these great businesses that are
[332]
operating like people like Fred Smith at
[333]
FedEx they figured it out they've
[336]
figured out how to keep their workplace
[338]
safe and their workers safe which is
[340]
their top priority but also provide
[342]
goods and services so we actually have
[343]
an economy so why don't we follow the
[345]
advice of the trucking companies and the
[348]
FedEx is and the Amazons that are doing
[350]
it and they're doing it in a safe way
[354]
well let's question if you don't mind
[356]
CEO I know my producer is gonna kill me
[358]
but you're such a good guess um Jerome
[360]
Powell the Federal Reserve and well he's
[362]
extra efforts Herculean efforts unlike
[366]
we've ever seen before
[367]
dwarfs Allah but the Fed was doing
[369]
during the meltdown do you think Jerome
[371]
Powell has put himself in better graces
[374]
with the president given his performance
[376]
in the face of this virus that he is not
[379]
necessarily one and done with this
[382]
president that's what I was thinking
[384]
about that last night that's only in
[386]
recess laughing because Trump has been
[387]
so tough on Jerome Powell of last
[389]
several since he was really appointed
[392]
and and actually every meeting I've been
[395]
with Trump you know he to talk about the
[397]
economies but he always takes some time
[399]
to
[399]
attack the the Fed chairman I actually
[403]
have to say and I've been pretty
[405]
critical on this show and others as you
[407]
know but I think Powell has actually
[409]
done a pretty good job of managing this
[411]
this this crisis I think it's the right
[415]
thing to do good enough to keep his job
[417]
good enough do you think you know the
[419]
president that you think the president
[421]
say I don't hate you anymore
[422]
you're not allowing users anymore I
[424]
think I would reappoint you here is the
[427]
answer to that question if we come out
[429]
of this and we come out of it like we
[431]
all want to see with a v-shaped recovery
[433]
with the economy back in good shape by
[436]
the fall and and we don't even know not
[437]
even nine months from now talking about
[440]
coronavirus yes I think Jerome Powell
[442]
will deserve to be to be reappointed but
[446]
I'm very nervous last point very nervous
[448]
about the Fed picking winners and losers
[450]
in the economy right now Neil we can't
[452]
have them said we're gonna bail out this
[453]
company or not that company and that
[455]
that makes me a little bit nervous but
[458]
I'm balanced I'm gonna give him an
[459]
a-minus great for what he's done in this
[461]
crisis all right you needn't worry but
[464]
it looks like we're bailing out
[465]
everybody know where we're going but
[467]
we'll see what happens Steve more okay
[469]
always a pleasure thank you my friends
[470]
now
