WaPo: Grand Jury Files Charges Against Trump Organization, CFO Weisselberg - YouTube

Channel: MSNBC

[0]
breaking news just moments ago from the
[1]
washington post reporting that a
[3]
manhattan grand jury
[4]
has filed criminal indictments against
[6]
the trump organization
[8]
and his longtime chief financial officer
[10]
alan weiselberg
[11]
the indictments came down tonight but
[13]
will remain sealed until tomorrow
[14]
afternoon
[15]
leaving us in the dark about the
[16]
specific charges until then although
[18]
they are expected to be focused
[20]
on tax related crimes post also reports
[23]
that alan weisselberg is expected to
[25]
surrender
[26]
at the manhattan district attorney's
[28]
office tomorrow morning and will be
[29]
arraigned later in the day
[30]
the trump organization the entity the
[32]
company itself will also be arranged
[34]
represented
[35]
by a lawyer these are the first charges
[38]
resulting from the nearly three-year
[39]
investigation into donald trump
[40]
and his businesses trump himself is not
[43]
expected to be charged
[45]
with any crimes at this time the charges
[48]
against his business will of course
[49]
exacerbate his legal issues
[51]
and charges against weisselberg could
[52]
increase pressure on the longtime cfo to
[54]
flip on his boss joining me now by phone
[57]
one of the washington post reporters who
[59]
just broke that story
[60]
david farrenhold david what more can you
[62]
tell us
[64]
well tomorrow as you said we will learn
[67]
more about the evidence that the
[68]
manhattan d.a has against allen
[70]
weisselberg
[70]
the trump organization we anticipate
[72]
that the charges filed tomorrow
[74]
well two things about that we anticipate
[75]
that they will relate to taxes that
[78]
should have been paid on
[79]
payments benefits to trump organization
[81]
indexes you know
[82]
this will not just be one or two you
[84]
know missed tax payments this may be
[86]
sort of alleged as a
[87]
conspiracy or something that happened
[89]
over a long period of time
[90]
we also don't believe this to be the end
[92]
of the case i think this will be
[94]
the first charges in this case but i
[95]
don't think that we're seeing the end
[97]
in fact we may be sort of seeing the
[98]
beginning as prosecutors put their
[100]
pressure on weisselberg in the hopes
[101]
that he will flip and become one of
[103]
their witnesses
[105]
yeah and weisselberg obviously has been
[107]
the key here all
[109]
this entire time and the question i
[110]
think was you know we knew investigators
[112]
were looking around weisselberg
[114]
um we also know that in the past you
[115]
know investigators looked to michael
[117]
cohen
[118]
initially michael cohen had not uh had
[120]
not flipped he had been
[121]
you know had a search warrant surged on
[123]
him he had been charged and then he
[125]
uh ended up striking a deal for
[127]
testimony in exchange for
[129]
for leniency clearly that's the number
[132]
one fear i would imagine for donald
[134]
trump or for people in his orbit
[136]
that's right i mean michael cohen as you
[139]
said
[139]
he had a huge amount of other
[141]
liabilities that didn't have to do much
[142]
with his work with donald trump he had
[144]
some related to that
[144]
he also had a whole uh entanglement
[147]
involving taxi licenses and loans in new
[148]
york city
[149]
that was part of the pressure on him to
[151]
flip michael cohen thought he might
[152]
spend more than 10 years in prison
[153]
he changed the tune and started he
[155]
testified pleaded guilty but also
[156]
testified against trump
[158]
we will see tomorrow what kind of
[160]
sentence is facing weisselberg
[162]
you know is he talking about some kind
[163]
of offense that usually just gets off at
[165]
the fine
[165]
or is he looking at something that could
[167]
be years and years in prison weisselberg
[168]
in the 70s
[169]
will he feel the pressure that michael
[171]
cohen fell as i said it's really hard to
[173]
evaluate this case until you know what's
[174]
going to happen with weisselberg
[176]
and it's really hard to know what's
[176]
going to happen with weiselberg until
[178]
you see what's facing tomorrow
[182]
and the the arraignment of the i mean
[185]
again it's sort of a strange to sort of
[187]
encounter the
[188]
legal fiction or legal entity of the
[191]
corporation and its arraignment
[192]
um obviously the corporation cannot
[194]
march into court
[196]
uh it highlights i think how relatively
[199]
rare criminal charges are against
[200]
a business enterprise or corporation um
[203]
what do we know about that channel of
[206]
charges
[207]
well as you said the trump organization
[209]
will be represented in court by a lawyer
[210]
who will probably enter a not guilty
[212]
plea on its behalf
[213]
it'll be interesting to me to see what
[215]
specifically they charge what entity the
[217]
trump organization is more than 500
[218]
different llc's
[219]
it's created on purpose to be sort of
[221]
this opaque nest of llc's that all own
[224]
pieces of each other
[225]
all reporting back up to trump so i'll
[226]
be interested to see which entities they
[228]
charge
[229]
you could you could these cases probably
[232]
they're not that common when they do
[233]
happen
[233]
they often end in fines uh for the
[236]
companies that have been charged
[238]
but there's also sort of collateral
[239]
damage or there could be collateral
[240]
damage
[241]
if it makes banks lenders you know
[244]
people who have contracts with the trump
[245]
organization
[246]
leery of doing business with an indicted
[252]
company
[257]
[Music]
[269]
