The Cashless Envelope Method - YouTube

[0]
- Welcome to "The Budget Mum" YouTube channel,
[1]
I'm Kumiko Love from www.thebudgetmum.com
[4]
and today we're gonna be talking all about
[6]
the cashless envelope method!
[8]
So I know a lot of my readers have reached out and said,
[11]
"Hey, I'm no longer using cash
[14]
"due to the Coronavirus pandemic."
[17]
And even I this month
[19]
have done something I've never done before.
[21]
I'm actually using the cashless envelope method
[24]
and I'm documenting that journey here on YouTube,
[27]
in this video as well over on my Instagram account.
[30]
So there is a huge "ah-ha" moment,
[33]
there was a huge "ah-ha" moment in my life
[35]
on my budgeting journey,
[37]
and that "ah-ha" moment was becoming an all-cash spender.
[40]
Now I have been an all-cash spender for the last nine years,
[45]
which means I hardly ever swipe a debit card.
[48]
I pay my bills online,
[50]
and then I pull out cash for my Cash Envelopes
[53]
every single time I'm paid.
[56]
In April I decided to make a switch,
[58]
just because more and more banks and lobbies were closed,
[62]
I wasn't able to go in
[63]
and do my normal bank transfers and transactions.
[67]
I did have a little bit of worry about cash
[69]
and so I decided to try and document
[72]
how using the cashless envelope method looks
[75]
in someone's real life
[76]
and I'm gonna be showing you
[77]
what that looks like today in my life,
[79]
and what it looks like for me in April.
[82]
(upbeat music)
[96]
During this process I realized
[100]
how much I love using cash.
[104]
The reason the cash envelope method works
[107]
is because your spending becomes real.
[110]
Your budget becomes tangible,
[112]
especially if you're a visual person.
[115]
It makes you ask the hard questions around your spending.
[119]
All of a sudden you head to the grocery store
[121]
you're not just swiping you debit card
[122]
and not knowing the long-term consequences of your spending.
[127]
All of a sudden you know right in front of your face,
[129]
"Okay, I only have $20 left in cash,
[131]
"this what I have left to spend
[133]
"and once it's gone it's gone."
[136]
The cashless envelope method,
[138]
even though it doesn't have some of the same benefits
[141]
as using real cash,
[143]
there are still a lot of benefits.
[144]
And one of the huge benefits is,
[147]
you're bringing financial awareness into your life
[149]
because you are still tracking your spending
[152]
on a tracking card.
[154]
So let me show you what the cashless envelope method
[157]
looks like in my life and what it's all about.
[160]
So the cashless envelope method
[162]
really does look similar to using the cash envelope method.
[166]
Instead though, there is a little bit of a difference.
[168]
As you can see in my wallet,
[171]
I no longer have cash envelopes,
[173]
I have tracking cards.
[176]
Another difference you might be seeing in my April budget is
[181]
when I'm doing and using cash, I have two expense trackers.
[185]
I have one for my checking account,
[187]
and one for my cash spending.
[189]
But while using the cashless envelope method,
[191]
everything is coming out of my checking account,
[194]
which means now I am down to just using one expense tracker
[197]
for my checking account.
[200]
Now, that means that
[202]
I have bills coming out of my checking account
[205]
as well as my variable spending from my cash envelopes.
[208]
Now my cash envelopes are still created on my budget
[214]
and I'll show you that here.
[216]
So this is my April budget,
[219]
and you can see here,
[222]
that I still came up with category limits
[226]
for all of my envelopes just like normal.
[228]
So I have $400 for food,
[230]
$75 dollars for fun,
[232]
$200 dollars for gas,
[233]
$80 for beauty,
[234]
$100 for miscellaneous
[236]
and $80 dollars for household.
[238]
Now, sorry, this was actually my rough draft,
[240]
this is my finalized budget.
[243]
So I have everything still mapped out,
[245]
just like I normally would in my cash envelope budget,
[248]
except, instead of using cash envelopes,
[251]
I'm using trackers that look like this.
[254]
Now I have a tracker
[255]
for each one of my different variable spending categories,
[260]
or my cash envelope categories,
[261]
and you can see that for example,
[267]
for food, just like on the back of your cash envelope
[271]
you track your spending so you have an updated total
[274]
of how much you have to spend in that category,
[277]
instead of tracking it on the envelope
[278]
you're going to track it on an expense tracker
[281]
or spending tracker that looks like this.
[284]
Now you can get these in my shop,
[286]
I will put a link in the description of this video
[288]
for these spending trackers,
[290]
but these are the ones that I'm using this month,
[292]
in the month of April.
[293]
So you literally write down your spending,
[296]
if you are spending in your cash envelope categories.
[299]
Now you can probably see I also have gas purchases going on.
[305]
So you might be asking,
[306]
"Miko, why am I tracking it on a spending tracker,
[310]
"and also tracking it on my expense tracker
[314]
"in my Budget By Paycheck Workbook?"
[316]
They serve two different purposes.
[319]
You're tracking it on you spending tracker in your wallet
[323]
so you always have an updated balance
[326]
of how much you have left to spend
[327]
in that specific cash envelope category.
[331]
Or, for April this is my cashless category.
[336]
So I'm just tracking it on a spending tracker.
[338]
You're tracking it on your expense tracker,
[341]
so when you close out your budget for your tracking period,
[346]
you have all of those transactions here,
[350]
to count towards closing out your budget.
[353]
Plus, not only that, using the cashless method,
[356]
I am always updating my balance,
[360]
depending on how much I'm spending.
[363]
So this gives you an updated balance
[365]
of your checking account.
[367]
This gives you an updated balance
[369]
of how much you have in that specific category to spend.
[373]
So the only really big difference that we're making here
[376]
is that we're replacing our cash envelope
[378]
with these spending trackers.
[380]
We still get the same type of awareness,
[383]
we still know the instant consequences of our spending
[387]
by seeing our ending balance here,
[390]
we're just not using physical cash.
[393]
Which does have a huge psychological benefit,
[397]
when it comes to spending money.
[400]
It's just the benefit we're giving up,
[402]
to use the cashless method.
[405]
But I think more than that psychological benefit,
[408]
the awareness is the most important thing
[411]
when it comes to spending your money.
[413]
And you get that from the cashless method,
[416]
as well as the cash envelope method.
[418]
So that is a quick rundown and overview
[421]
of what the cashless envelope method is all about,
[423]
and what it looks like in my real life for April.
