tell us

a little bit about yourself why you
[121]
started a landscaping company
[122]
and a little bit of backdrop on that

sure i
[126]
started a landscape company um just
[128]
after years of working for other people
[130]
and and uh doing essentially what i do
[133]
here but not really reaping the benefits
[136]
of that
[137]
my first couple jobs were working at
[139]
nurseries and
[141]
public gardens and florists and stuff
[143]
like that and
[144]
it's just always been a passion of mine
[146]
and it just finally got to a point where
[148]
i needed to step out on my own to
[152]
achieve anything more than just average
[154]
you know to
[155]
actually take it to the next level right
[157]
so you were doing this for somebody else
[159]
at 15 bucks an hour
[160]
yes you figured out i could probably do
[163]
this on my own
[164]
that's where it really hit me the most
[166]
is that i
[167]
i was doing all the estimating
[170]
making sure all the materials were there
[172]
on time doing all the work
[174]
running the cruise and everything and i
[176]
finally realized that the only thing i
[177]
wasn't doing was
[179]
collecting a paycheck that was decent

how do you decide on pricing estimating
[192]
can you walk us through that process a
[193]
little bit i kind of break down i
[195]
when i go out and i look at a project i
[197]
i walk around i kind of measure
[199]
materials get an idea of how many
[201]
materials i'm going to need of each
[203]
thing
[203]
soil plantings rocks gravel whatever it
[206]
may be
[207]
and then i kind of figure out separately
[210]
from that how long it'll take me so i
[211]
break each project down
[213]
into separate sections and then i
[217]
figure out how much time each section
[219]
will take me and how many materials
[220]
that'll take
[221]
and the customers like that too when i
[223]
write my estimates out i write my
[224]
estimates out like that
[226]
so so that they see the fences separate
[228]
from the paver patio
[229]
or from the retaining wall or from the
[232]
gravel pass or from the planting that
[234]
way they can
[235]
look at it and i don't break every
[238]
material down
[239]
separately for them but we give them a
[242]
a good idea of what each little
[244]
individual project costs that way
[247]
two things that serves they can actually
[249]
see where that money is going
[250]
and being divided up and they can also
[254]
cut sections out if they want to without
[256]
me having to rewrite a whole new
[258]
estimate

so brian we're here in one of your sites

residential property

place looks amazing the things you're
[270]
doing are really cool so walk us through
[271]
kind of
[272]
everything that we see here sure so this
[275]
site started off as a
[276]
kind of a blank slate with a bunch of
[278]
great issues
[280]
one of the first things we did was come
[282]
in and get all the grade established get
[284]
everything cut out
[285]
build the rock walls and the block
[287]
retaining walls
[288]
to correct all that um you know other
[291]
than that we've got
[292]
we've got these gravel paths that are
[294]
compacted gravel past with
[296]
welded steel borders these are all fully
[298]
welded and fabricated on site
[300]
um and this is above and beyond what
[302]
i've normally seen i mean metal for
[303]
borders
[304]
yeah stuff lasts forever and the nice
[306]
thing is it does it lasts forever
[308]
um it will get a little thin coating of
[310]
rust on the surface which will
[312]
blend in really well with the landscape
[314]
and it and it's nice and solid it'll
[316]
keep the gravel out of the bedding areas
[318]
and the mulch
[319]
from the bedding areas out of the gravel
[322]
pass

let's talk about your client base when
[330]
you got started how did you build your
[331]
client base
[332]
and what are some tips you can share
[334]
with our viewers and advice on how they
[336]
can follow that strategy as well
[338]
so i mean one of the first things that
[340]
we did when we were looking for our
[342]
first clients was
[343]
reach out to real estate agents
[347]
they are constantly dealing with people
[350]
that
[350]
are purchasing new homes or moving into
[354]
a home
[354]
and uh you know want to upgrade their
[356]
landscape
[357]
the other thing we did was your local
[359]
suppliers
[360]
build a relationship with them most
[362]
nurseries
[365]
home depot places where you can buy soil
[367]
and materials
[368]
go in there get some business cards when
[371]
we started we had some
[372]
cheap business cards made um who cares
[374]
about what and uh
[376]
you know go put those places and and
[378]
start telling people
[379]
and throwing your name out there i mean
[381]
really that's the biggest thing is
[382]
just get your name out there to anyone
[384]
you can make yourself
[385]
a facebook business page and and just
[389]
start going at it there's going to be a
[391]
lot of times where
[393]
you know the work isn't coming in as
[395]
fast as you want it to
[397]
and you'll doubt yourself and wonder if
[399]
you are doing the right thing
[401]
but to be successful i mean just keep
[404]
pushing at it just keep
[405]
trying and and reaching out to more and
[407]
more people and and
[409]
as you go you know keep your quality
[411]
consistent and high quality and that
[413]
will
[414]
in itself will sell more projects
[422]
i see you got a lot of equipment brian
[423]
tell us a little bit about each how much
[425]
it costs maybe and
[426]
the best way to source it so we have a
[428]
lot of different tools that we use for
[430]
cutting our pavers especially this
[432]
uh this is a water table saw
[435]
this is nice for doing straight cuts
[438]
this saw
[439]
is an invaluable tool to us
[442]
cost about twenty five hundred dollars
[444]
new um
[446]
but like i said you really can't be
[449]
having a saw
[450]
like this we also have a demolition saw
[453]
that we use
[454]
which the handheld's on we cut our
[456]
curves in the pavers with that
[459]
compactor this is for compacting our
[461]
base
[462]
to lay our pavers in we compact all our
[464]
gravel paths with this
[466]
our generator um is pretty important to
[469]
us because
[469]
a lot of the stuff we run these big saws
[472]
for the
[472]
cutting the pavers and the welder that
[475]
we use for welding all their stuff it
[476]
draws
[477]
too much current on a new construction
[479]
house sometimes they don't even have
[480]
power ready
[482]
so we can just set up our stuff and go
[485]
but you can live without that when
[486]
you're starting out right now yeah so
[488]
that's one of the tied on your budget
[490]
no the nice thing is there's a lot of
[491]
this stuff too when you're first
[493]
starting out you can rent this stuff
[495]
so if you can't afford to buy a 2500
[498]
saw um you can go to a rental equipment
[502]
store and you can rent this saw for a
[504]
hundred dollars a day
[505]
factor that into your budget yeah you
[507]
know and you just kind of factor that
[508]
into your estimates so you're not
[510]
limited when you start out with
[511]
landscaping almost all this stuff
[513]
you can rent
[514]

you know for landscaping business it's a
[520]
really visual
[521]
product so the more pictures make sense
[524]
you can put up i mean
[525]
facebook is a great tool instagram is a
[527]
great tool
[528]
um for us because it's such a visual
[531]
product
[532]
that you can post pictures every day and
[534]
people can see it and then they can see
[536]
what they want it's just like pinterest
[537]
homeowners love
[538]
pinterest it's because they just get a
[540]
bunch of ideas and that inspires them to
[543]
do things on their own home
[544]
and it's the same thing with our
[546]
landscaping business you don't have to
[547]
spend a lot of money on it
[549]
get a page built or or do your own page
[553]
and then
[554]
just advertise i mean you don't have to
[556]
spend money on it
[557]
advertise it on your own friends list
[559]
get people to share it the more
[561]
people that see your content the more
[565]
uh exposure you'll get and that will
[567]
translate into more work
[568]
that makes sense people love before and
[570]
afters
[571]
so anytime we start a new project i walk
[574]
around the whole job before we touch
[576]
the ground and i take pictures from all
[578]
different angles and that way when we're
[579]
done with a project we can take those
[581]
same pictures
[582]
because uh that really can show people
[585]
what a dramatic difference whatever
[587]
you're doing is whether we're just doing
[588]
a cleanup or we're doing a complete
[590]
landscape surprise before and after
[591]
pictures people love those
[594]

what's a good day for you financially

income revenue-wise and what's a bad day

if you can share that with us you know
[605]
we have good days where
[606]
where we might i we just did a project
[609]
where we
[610]
bid to do assad projects seven thousand
[613]
dollars all said and done we me
[615]
i after the guys were paid materials
[618]
equipment paid for
[619]
about four thousand dollars in a day in
[621]
a day which is nice
[622]
so that's about a good day that's a
[624]
really good that consistent would be
[625]
nice right it's nice to
[627]
have good days like that yeah and what
[629]
about i mean
[630]
if you have any bad days i mean so i
[632]
mean
[633]
we finally we've gotten kind of far
[635]
enough along in the game where we're
[636]
efficient and we know what we're doing
[637]
and
[638]
we don't have a lot of really bad days
[640]
but for me personally
[642]
if i can pay my guys pay the taxes pay
[645]
all that
[646]
stuff and if i still get to walk home
[648]
with three or four hundred dollars in my
[650]
pocket
[651]
um that's a good day you know all the
[653]
bills are paid your guys are all paid
[655]
and you still made profit which is like
[658]
i said that's about
[659]
as worst of the days as it gets it's not
[661]
like you have bad days all the time yeah
[662]

you've got a pretty clean trailer here i

gotta say so uh

cahoots to you is that what they say i
[673]
mean organization is everything but tell
[675]
us a little bit about what we're looking
[676]
at and
[677]
what's most important kind of how the
[679]
tools are used too so really for
[680]
us it's important to keep everything
[682]
organized because we have to cram a lot
[684]
of different tools into one area
[686]
so the way our trailer is set up
[689]
we have these spaces where most of our
[691]
big saws and stuff sit
[693]
um these boxes here you know these are
[696]
filled with battery-powered tools so
[698]
battery-powered drills and saws and
[700]
grinders you know we have uh
[702]
our our laser transit setup that we use
[705]
for getting our grades perfectly level
[707]
for all of our um pavers and sidewalks
[711]
and stuff like that
[712]
a little hand tools and stuff that are
[713]
easily accessible that we use all the
[715]
time pretty straightforward they're
[716]
gonna keep all those up
[718]
for a normal landscaper these are what
[719]
you need the most right i mean these are
[721]
the most valuable tools we have and they
[723]
cost the least amount of money but
[725]
um you know we we spend a little bit
[727]
extra money to get tools of fiberglass
[729]
handles
[730]
because the guys last a little longer
[731]
they can use the heck out of them
[733]
shovels rigs pitchforks having them all
[736]
easily
[737]
accessible that's a big thing for us
[741]
we buy the tools we need for the job and
[743]
when you sign another job
[745]
you take some of that money and buy the
[746]
tool that you need for that job
[748]
and that way you just keep building up
[750]
and tools wear out so it's a
[752]
never-ending thing we still
[753]
we buy new tools all the time because
[756]
they usually get worn out yep and you
[757]
just have to kind of factor that into
[759]
your prices but
[760]
yeah that's what that's how we grew was
[762]
by um
[764]
buying the tools that we needed for the
[765]
next job that we signed
[767]
you know um it's sometimes it's tough
[769]
you're like i'm only going to make a
[770]
thousand dollars on this
[772]
job and i need a 500 tool but you go buy
[775]
that 500
[776]
tool because then the next time that's
[777]
all profit

what's the secret to your tremendous

growth for the company i mean two man
[788]
crew when you started out
[789]
and this year you're about to break a
[791]
million dollars in revenue

if you were to boil it down to two three
[795]
things what would it be
[796]
the biggest things are just um marketing
[799]
the company
[800]
and then as far as on the actual site
[803]
just the quality of work and and really
[806]
just striving
[807]
and not being afraid to dream that's the
[809]
biggest thing is uh elaborate on that
[811]
you can really limit yourself in your
[814]
own thoughts so
[816]
when i come to look at a project a lot
[817]
of times clients don't really know what
[819]
they want or the extent of what they
[821]
want
[821]
right and what i've found has helped us
[824]
grow a lot is
[825]
just being able to dream bigger you know
[828]
with your client
[829]
yeah so when you go to talk to them
[831]
don't be afraid to
[832]
to tell them um you know well what if
[835]
you did a
[836]
you could do a water feature over here
[838]
or you could
[839]
instead of just making that grass you
[841]
could do something really cool there
[843]
that's uh and that's one of the things
[845]
i've really found is that
[847]
a lot of times people are a lot more
[849]
open to that stuff and the only reason
[850]
they haven't brought it up
[852]
is because they just didn't think about
[854]
it i mean you can never dream too big
[856]
you know just uh you can always down
[859]
you can always scale down your project
[861]
but you can't it's harder to make it
[862]
bigger once you've started so
[864]
start big and just keep pushing for that
[867]
and
[868]
that's really i think the key to our
[870]
growth and our success is that
[872]
as we get further along bigger projects
[876]
then um you know it requires building
[878]
the company bigger
[879]
