Ok, so my topic is hostile and benevolent sexism in the work space.

so discrimination against women can turn into hostile sexism when men feel

that woman should not be working and that they feel that women should be staying

at home and taking care of the children and hostile sexism can turn into an

isolation or deliberate careless carelessness that can put women at

physical risk so an example of this is on females that are construction workers

they can often be forced to work to nine jobs and if the female tries to prove

that she can work like a man doubling the dirtiest work are getting

her. And if the female refuses, then they are

accused of demanding special treatment an excuse used for this type

of behavior for men is that boys will be boys. An example of this is firefighter women who filed a lawsuit

in which she expressed hostile sexism in the workplace and the captain explained that when women were on duty men could not do locker room stuff

like looking at porn or stare at women from the fire truck which is why it led into hostile sexism.

And because of this it can unfortunately lead to sexual harassment

and select sexual harassment becomes a way for men to reassert their dominance over these women.

be taunted, harassed and sometimes even fired

women who don't balance showing their masculinity with femininity are even

likelier to be targets when this happens women can be considered a symbolic

threat meaning their presence potentially degrades the identity of the

dominant group which is the males so when a female becomes a construction

worker or an engineer the men working with that female may feel threatened

because men's self-esteem come from doing a "man's job" so there is some

justification for that fear when women entering profession in large numbers the

men are not protected from the drop in status that comes with feminization

which also means lower wages men are not protected from that

so the concept I will be discussing is double bind so double bind is basically looking at how

women are treated in a male domination occupation, so from the start of time we've had this

kind of view that a women are supposed to be this job men are supposed to be

in this job so now when women are in the masculine like field they suffer from

the perception that they are not right for the job that they are a woman the

jobs are male dominated so males need to occupy those jobs not women so it's

basically about sexism people prefer to have a male as their leader supervisor

no matter what the qualities are or who's really ideal for the job and it's

pretty interesting because when it was looked at both men and women forming a male dominate job

people refer male bosses over females and when they do have a female boss they are looked at negatively, so when you

think of like a cop what comes first in your mind? Not a female, a male so

generally like everyone thinks like Oh a cop, a female so why is it that males are

considered the dominant gender they are to fulfill

the males can and the females can't and then when you look at women trying to succeed

in a job where it's mainly for male they need to be accepted by their bosses

colleagues, clients but they also need to try and fit in to the male perspective so

they need a woman needs to masculinity but to be accepted she needs to be

femininity so she needs to perform a job as a male but still be a female end of

the day and then female women are seen as likable but incompetent while women

who do masculinity are seen as competent but not like away likable so if your

female in a masculine job you're not going to be like but if you're a female

in a job you don't have to do masculine jobs feel be like and then furthermore

in studies that were done if a male and a female get mad at work when they see

the female mad they'll say like she's out of control

but when they see the male is mad they'll say oh he has a legitimate reason to

be upset and then same thing happens for their pay men who negotiate the

salary or make a case for a raise are sometimes evaluated negatively but women

who do the same are evaluated far more negatively in fact in one study they found that we were penalized

five point five times more than than men for demanding higher pay

the concept that I'll be talking about would be the glass ceiling concept this

idea shows that there is an invisible barrier between women and top

positions in masculine occupations meaning that if you were a woman working

for IBM Chevy General Motors and so forth you're kind of stand put at being an employee rather than seen as a ceo or cfo with that company because they are male dominated positions

women who do work in these kind of a glass ceiling circumstances especially

have a high level of occupation satisfy themselves ever thought of sort of

harassment so that these women do work from these glass ceiling concept and

they break through that what they find next is they are faced with a lot of scrutiny from the men that are below them or

aren't ready for the leadership positions or they don't have the skills

to obtain those positions but it's because they're often given promotions

whether companies are going through crisis so which makes it harder for them

so because of the glass cliff women's average tenure time as a CEO is four

point eight years compared to an average male CEO tenure time which is

eight point two years so the glass cliff phenomenon probably sound strange

but and people may ask if when women are seen less capable than men why would

companies promote them promote women to higher positions in times of crisis so

the answer has less to do with how men feel about women but more of how men

feel about the other men in their job so men often give higher

positions and secure jobs to other men in their companies and give women and

minority the lesser jobs and because of that a woman in the Marine Corps she

stated that it's the good old boys network the guys helping each other

out and we don't have the woman helping each other out because there are not

enough of us around the good old boys network put the guys that wants to get

promoted in certain jobs to make them stand out and look good

so women when they succeed in these jobs that are in our positions that often are

rewarded with another hard project and it's often stated that women quit jobs

because they want to spend more time with their families but actually only

two percent of women who quit their job say that most of the factors have to do

with discrimination... They feeling that they are being blocked with opportunities, they are being harassed, they feel under appreciated.

A librarian would face comments, backlashes from their friends and family saying why don't you aim higher basically...

why are you still in this profession so this guy has been working ten years and

he has been fighting to remain in his position without getting a promotion... now to take a personal

example I'm Asian (yes I'm from South West Asia!!!) and you know what they say about Asian people you either become

a doctor or you can become a disgrace so I have chosen to leave that part of my

culture behind and come here most the people that I know in Asia they tend

to be in management positions and they're all males I look at where the

females are and oh! they're at home and most of them are well they are nursing but

their bosses well guess who it is it's men so with that I would like to say

so the ideal work norm is known to be the idea that employees should be able to

focus and devote themselves to their job without the distraction and family

responsibilities and this logic basically states that one is less likely

to go above and beyond performance level in terms of always having priority rather to an

organization or a company and some samples would be falling off work let's

say you have a sick child or you would have a conference to attend or let's say

you even have to come up with an issue of not having someone take care of your

child along with that there is also a lot of arguments made of how there also

parents who have children are less likely to work overtime

and even to move locations for the company they basically see them as like

I previously said they're less devoted to actually take their job seriously

I have converts with others who don't have children therefore when it comes to

hiring them lawyers tend to be more iffy about it

I know for a fact from my personal experience for think within a district

I do see whenever we come whenever we are hiring people we do kind of take

into consideration whether there's some reason being willing to devote their

time to the colleges we worked for or they're not... so that definitely has a pay factor along with that

also along with that includes parents like moms who are have

younger children whether babies but they're about two kids and that was also

that many employers see moms as less than ideal employees and fathers as

often get looked down and wanted to give their best their hard work often gets

unrecognized not only because they're women but because they're moms

one study even found that respondents judged breastfeeding mothers to be less

competent workers that mothers who bottle feed.... another study

showed about hiring for a marketing job and after the applications were turned

in the reviews were that mothers were rated as the least competent committed

promotable and student for management training in contracts contrast fathers

were weighted more favorably than non fathers they were seen as more committed

and more likely to promote they were considered to be worth six thousand more

a year than non fathers and thirteen thousand more than mothers it's not fair

how fathers are suitable the mothers aren't also seen is that women even get

judged when they're pregnant or when they have newborns people think women

will make excuses about the baby to take days off but if fathers have the

same excuse it is totally okay because fathers bear as per the days off for their
