My Favourite Tech for Reading Books - Kindle vs iPad vs Books vs Audiobooks - YouTube
Channel: Ali Abdaal
[0]
hey friends welcome back to the channel
[1]
now reading is one of the things that i
[2]
love and that i'm sure you love as well
[4]
but life is really hard for us these
[5]
days here
[6]
in 2021 because we've got way too many
[8]
methods of reading books we've got
[10]
kindle
[10]
ipad physical books god forbid we've got
[13]
audiobooks and so in this video i'm
[14]
going to try and answer a question
[15]
that's been plaguing philosophers since
[17]
the dawn of time
[18]
what is the best way to read books so
[20]
for each of these different ways of
[21]
reading we're going to be comparing them
[23]
against one another and we're going to
[24]
talk about the cost and affordability
[26]
we're going to talk about the
[26]
convenience
[27]
the aesthetics of reading the ease of
[30]
note-taking and the durability of the
[32]
reading method of choice
[33]
and for each one i'm going to share my
[34]
personal thoughts on which of these four
[37]
methods i use in different circumstances
[38]
in my life
[39]
let's get into it alright method number
[40]
one for reading is the one that's been
[42]
around since the prehistoric era and
[44]
that is the method of physical books now
[45]
in terms of price physical books are
[47]
pretty reasonable you can get a book for
[48]
between five dollars and twenty dollars
[50]
and
[50]
if you go to a secondhand bookstore or a
[52]
public library you can get them for
[53]
cheap or virtually free convenience wise
[55]
though we're gonna give books a one out
[57]
of five the problem with books compared
[59]
to devices is that you have to carry a
[60]
physical book around
[61]
and so if you're the sort of person who
[62]
carries a book around with them and
[64]
that's totally cool
[64]
but every time i've tried to carry books
[66]
with me it ends up getting like smushed
[68]
in my bag and i end up never really
[69]
taking it up but the place that physical
[71]
books really shine is in the aesthetics
[73]
of the reading like
[74]
a lot of the anti-kindle people say that
[76]
oh there's something something nice
[77]
about reading a physical book and i
[79]
would agree i think
[80]
in terms of reading aesthetics physical
[81]
books are going to get a five-star
[83]
rating from me because with kindle ipad
[85]
audio books you just don't get that nice
[87]
feeling
[87]
feeling of the book and you know when
[89]
you're reading a book you feel you know
[90]
what i'm going to sit down and read a
[91]
book
[91]
i don't really think that when it comes
[93]
to sitting down with a kindle or sitting
[94]
down with the ipad that's probably the
[95]
single best thing about the physical
[96]
books um in terms of their ease of
[98]
note-taking we're gonna give this a
[99]
three out of five star
[101]
it is possible to take notes from books
[102]
while you're reading but usually you
[104]
have to have a pencil on you taking
[105]
notes in the margin or like i do you can
[106]
use these physical book tag things to
[108]
kind of create bookmarks
[110]
and then theoretically at some point i'm
[111]
gonna go over my bookmarks for this and
[113]
actually type them up
[114]
so ease of note-taking we're going to
[115]
give a three-star rating and then in
[117]
terms of durability we're going to give
[118]
these a three out of five because
[120]
you can toss books onto the floor and
[122]
it's like totally fine
[125]
but for example this is a book i had in
[127]
my backpack and it just got squished
[129]
amongst everything else amongst all the
[130]
tekken devices and things so this is not
[131]
very good
[132]
and also if you pour water on books
[136]
they don't do particularly well i
[137]
remember i used to spill water on my
[139]
harry potter books when i used to sit
[140]
and read them in the toilet
[141]
and they would just end up dying so
[142]
durability gets a three out of five now
[144]
overall
[145]
physical books are still kind of nice i
[147]
do have quite a few physical books
[148]
around the house
[149]
i don't read them very often but i will
[151]
admit it is nicer
[152]
like if i'm winding down for the evening
[155]
it's it feels nicer to sit down and read
[157]
a physical book than just to sit down
[158]
and read the kindle so that would be
[160]
probably the best thing about them
[161]
now we're moving into the 21st century
[163]
and we have here the kindle i have here
[165]
the kindle oasis the kindle oasis is
[167]
probably a little bit overkill you could
[168]
do with the kindle paperwhite and out of
[170]
everything i've ever bought i would say
[171]
the kindle is one of my top three most
[173]
life-changing pieces of tech because
[175]
the thing with a kindle is once you have
[176]
a kindle it does cost a bit of money to
[178]
buy like 69 to 99 pounds on amazon
[180]
whatever
[181]
but once you have a kindle suddenly the
[183]
friction to buying and
[185]
getting and reading new books just gets
[186]
reduced basically down to zero it like
[188]
i've read so many more books
[190]
over the last 10 years since i've used
[192]
the kindle than i would have done if i
[194]
had to
[194]
wait for physical books to arrive any
[196]
time someone recommends me a book i can
[198]
literally hop onto amazon and just buy
[200]
it immediately on the kindle store and
[201]
start reading it there and then
[203]
that is the sort of thing you just don't
[204]
get from a physical book let's talk
[205]
about cost now so a kindle
[207]
i think is a pretty high return on
[209]
investment purchase 69 pounds for the
[211]
cheapest kindle
[212]
that's not too bad i'd basically
[213]
recommend a kindle for everyone our
[215]
kindle books
[216]
are not that much cheaper than
[217]
traditional physical books
[219]
these books are probably the same price
[220]
on kindle as they are in physical
[222]
version
[222]
but the nice thing about kindle is that
[224]
often amazon does run sales on them so
[226]
you can often get books for 99p
[228]
or less than a dollar or even a few
[230]
cents and that's pretty good for even
[232]
for ebooks you don't really get that
[233]
with physical books
[234]
so overall i think if you have a kindle
[236]
you would save more money
[237]
in the long run than if you bought
[239]
physical books but i think
[240]
the real benefit of getting a kindle is
[242]
in terms of the convenience and we're
[243]
gonna give this a five star rating
[245]
because it's just so convenient you
[246]
carry kindle around everywhere well i
[248]
don't personally i have my kindle on my
[250]
bedside and so whenever i wanna read at
[251]
night time i just
[252]
get into bed and read on my kindle
[254]
that's ridiculously convenient if i'm
[255]
going traveling i always take the kindle
[257]
with me because i know that if i'm on a
[258]
beach
[259]
or if i'm chilling in a coffee shop or
[260]
if i'm in bed i can always just read
[262]
whatever i want on the kindle the
[263]
aesthetics of reading though are not
[265]
that great like it's quite a functional
[267]
utilitarian device
[268]
it doesn't feel good to be reading a
[270]
book on the kindle which is why i'm only
[272]
going to give it a two out of five star
[273]
rating for this but even though the
[274]
aesthetics of the kindle are only two
[276]
out of five the ease of note taking on a
[278]
kindle is great because
[279]
the really great thing about kindle is
[280]
you can highlight anything and if you
[282]
can
[283]
you can highlight anything and then you
[284]
can export your highlights to whatever
[286]
you want so i use a service called read
[288]
wise affiliate link in the video
[289]
description if you want to check it out
[290]
i use a service called read wise which
[291]
automatically collects all of my
[293]
highlights from kindle and insta paper
[294]
for articles and air
[296]
audio for podcasts and it puts them all
[298]
together and then it sends those
[299]
highlights into notion and into rome
[301]
which are the two note taking apps that
[302]
i care about this is absolutely game
[304]
changing um i really wish
[306]
i had highlighted more books when i was
[307]
younger can you read them but not really
[309]
highlight them but now i just highlight
[310]
the hell out of all the books that i
[311]
read
[312]
whenever i come across something that
[313]
resonates with me and i know it's going
[315]
to end up in my note-taking system if i
[316]
need to use it at some point in the
[317]
future so
[318]
for ease of note-taking on a kindle
[320]
we're going to give this a 4 out of 5.
[322]
the reason it's not a five out of five
[323]
is because it's actually quite hard to
[325]
type things like
[326]
it does have a keyboard on it and a
[327]
touch screen but it's like really slow
[329]
and annoying to actually type stuff out
[331]
if i wanted to expand on a highlight so
[333]
mostly because of the highlighting
[335]
we're gonna give this a four out of five
[336]
and finally when it comes to durability
[338]
not particularly durable i've dropped
[340]
lots of kindles i have had them crushed
[341]
in my bag
[342]
they do all right let's give it a three
[343]
out of five um and the kindle oasis is
[345]
waterproof but it's a little bit
[346]
overpriced you probably don't need the
[348]
kindle oasis
[349]
unless you like buy a pool side or a
[350]
beach a lot you don't really care about
[352]
the well i personally don't really care
[353]
about the waterproof nature of it so
[354]
personal thoughts on the kindle kindle
[356]
is my absolute favorite way to read it's
[357]
not as aesthetic as books
[359]
but the convenience and the ease of
[361]
note-taking and highlighting makes it a
[362]
winner in my category and honestly
[364]
basically everyone in the world who can
[365]
afford it i would recommend a kindle
[367]
because i guarantee it will change your
[368]
life but let's say
[369]
you don't want to get a kindle because
[370]
you already have an ipad or a tablet or
[373]
even a phone
[374]
you can always use the kindle app on
[376]
your ipad or on your phone or on your
[378]
tablet
[379]
and the kindle app is pretty solid um
[381]
the kindle app isn't the one you have to
[382]
use you can use
[383]
ibooks as well or apple books or
[385]
whatever it's called and then you can
[387]
buy
[387]
ebooks from amazon or from apple and you
[389]
can read them on your device let's start
[391]
by talking about price now obviously
[392]
you've got the price of the device but
[393]
if you're going to read on your phone
[394]
chances are you've got a phone anyway so
[396]
the price doesn't really factor into it
[398]
and certainly if you if you have an ipad
[400]
you're probably not buying an ipad to
[401]
read books because that's a weird
[403]
use case for an ipad so you probably
[404]
have an ipad anyway if that's what
[405]
you're concerned about
[406]
and then price wise it's exactly the
[408]
same price as kindle books because you
[409]
can just read them on a different device
[411]
instead in terms of convenience we're
[412]
going to give this a 5 out of 5 as well
[414]
like it
[414]
like most of us well we always carry our
[416]
phones around right and
[418]
it's very convenient to be able to read
[419]
a book on your phone in fact i have
[421]
kindle on my home screen on my iphone
[423]
and for example when i was in japan for
[425]
two months and i was taking the train
[426]
back and forth into tokyo city center
[428]
for two hours each day i was reading a
[430]
song of ice and fire the series on my
[431]
phone while standing up in a carriage
[433]
and that's a lot easier to do on a phone
[435]
than it is even on a kindle where you
[437]
have a bigger device
[438]
obviously i wouldn't be taking an ipad
[440]
out and and reading on there so five out
[442]
of five full convenience but in terms of
[444]
reading aesthetics i'm gonna give this a
[445]
one out of five
[446]
it is less nice reading books on the
[448]
iphone and on the ipad then it is
[449]
reading on the kindle
[450]
nice thing about the kindle is that it's
[452]
got this e-ink screen so it doesn't look
[454]
like you're looking at a screen
[456]
but whenever i'm reading on my iphone or
[457]
my ipad or my macbook on the kindle app
[459]
i always feel like i'm looking at a
[460]
screen because i've spent i spent all of
[462]
my life looking at a screen anyway
[464]
it's a bit annoying to have my reading
[466]
experience also be based on looking at a
[468]
bright led screen but the place where
[469]
ipad and iphone and macbook really
[471]
outshine everything else
[472]
is in terms of their ease of note-taking
[475]
now when you're on
[476]
the kindle app on the ipad again you can
[478]
do the highlight thing as well so i
[480]
could just
[480]
select some text and highlight it and
[482]
then that would automatically
[483]
synchronize via read wise into
[484]
rom research for my note taking but the
[486]
even cooler thing is i can tap on it
[488]
and i can add a personal note and if i'm
[491]
adding a personal note
[493]
that saves to read-wise as well but
[495]
obviously it's a lot easier to type
[496]
something out on the ipad or on my phone
[498]
where i have a decent touch screen a
[499]
decent keyboard even on my macbook if
[501]
i'm reading on there i can type things
[502]
out
[503]
that's infinitely easier than trying to
[505]
type on the crappy keyboard that they've
[506]
got on the kindle
[507]
and it's also infinitely easier than
[509]
having to find a piece of paper to take
[511]
notes on
[511]
when reading a physical book so overall
[513]
in terms of use case often what i'll do
[514]
is that i'll read a book either on
[516]
kindle or i listen to the audiobook
[518]
but then if i know that it's the sort of
[519]
book i really want to take extensive
[520]
notes on or i want to write a summary of
[522]
i'll often just open it up on my ipad
[524]
and then in split screen mode i'd be
[526]
i'd be using the magic keyboard and i'd
[527]
be taking notes and summarizing the book
[529]
while flicking through it on the kindle
[531]
app on the ipad that's like a really
[533]
really really good user experience that
[534]
you don't really get with any other
[535]
device
[536]
so i'm going to give this a 5 out of 5
[537]
for note taking and that's my most
[539]
common use case in terms of reading on
[540]
the ipad and finally in terms of
[542]
durability
[543]
this stuff's not particularly durable
[544]
probably can't drop it it's not
[545]
waterproof
[546]
but you know i just shove it in my bag
[547]
at all times and i have the paper-like
[549]
screen protector on me on the ipad
[551]
matte screen protector that makes it
[552]
feel like paper when taking notes link
[553]
in the video description if you want to
[554]
check it out and finally the fourth
[556]
method of reading is in fact
[557]
audiobooks using audible i'm sure there
[560]
are other audiobook services no audible
[562]
are not sponsoring this video but
[562]
audible is by far the most popular one
[564]
it's the one that i've been using for
[565]
years at this point i often say even
[568]
when they're not sponsoring my videos
[569]
i often say that if there was only one
[570]
subscription service that i could ever
[572]
have in my life
[573]
it would be a subscription to audible
[574]
which i think is about 15
[576]
a month and for that you get one free
[579]
audiobook credit each month basically
[580]
price-wise
[581]
most people don't get through more than
[582]
one audiobook a month i get through a
[584]
lot of audiobooks a month so i just
[585]
spend a lot on audiobooks
[587]
if you buy audiobooks individually
[588]
they're like ridiculously expensive it's
[590]
like 25
[591]
on average for an audiobook but if you
[593]
get it through the audible subscription
[594]
it becomes much more reasonably priced
[596]
in terms of convenience listening to
[597]
stuff
[597]
i'm gonna give it a four out of five
[599]
it's not as convenient as just being
[600]
able to whip out your phone because you
[602]
do generally have to put headphones in
[604]
but that's one of the things i love
[605]
about the airpods for example that i can
[607]
just whack them in and immediately open
[608]
up the audible app on my iphone and just
[610]
immediately start listening to whatever
[612]
i want to listen to so this is what i do
[613]
when i'm cycling to my co-working space
[615]
these days
[616]
it's what i do when i'm doing any chores
[618]
around the house it's what i do when i'm
[619]
setting up the cameras
[620]
basically whenever i've got downtime i'm
[622]
always listening to something on audible
[623]
and it just makes it so so so convenient
[625]
to
[626]
listen to a ton of books now in terms of
[627]
the reading aesthetics it's not quite
[629]
the same as the feeling of reading a
[631]
book but like
[632]
all your books have like really are a
[634]
good user experience if you haven't
[635]
tried audiobooks yet i really recommend
[637]
it it's fantastic
[638]
um because they're like often narrated
[640]
either by the author of the book
[641]
themselves or by a professional voice
[643]
actor narrator type person and the
[645]
really cool thing about audiobooks is
[646]
you can listen to them at multiple
[648]
speeds so for example mostly i listen to
[650]
audiobooks at between 1.5 x and 2.5 x
[653]
speed
[653]
and the moment i'm listening to one
[654]
called the millionaire fast lane which
[656]
i'm listening to i think two and a half
[657]
times speed
[658]
that's pretty good it means i can get
[659]
through the book in two and a half times
[661]
the normal
[661]
normal rate and i can do that while
[663]
doing other stuff crucially so
[664]
absolutely incredible for convenience
[666]
and pretty okay for reading aesthetics
[668]
four out of five styles on that front
[669]
the main issue with audiobooks and this
[671]
is why i don't like audiobooks it's like
[672]
it's really really really hard to take
[674]
notes
[674]
while you're listening to an audio book
[675]
like yes on audible you can bookmark
[677]
sections but there's no real way of
[679]
exporting them
[680]
it's just an absolute nightmare to take
[681]
notes from audiobooks so the way that i
[683]
actually do it is
[684]
if i like a book so much on audible i
[687]
will just buy
[688]
it again on kindle and then i'll take
[689]
notes on my ipad using a split screen
[691]
taking notes on drafts or in notion or
[693]
in rome
[694]
with the kindle app open on the side and
[695]
so i'm afraid notetaking from audible
[697]
gets a one out of five in my book
[699]
and finally durability pretty hard to
[701]
assess but like they always live on the
[702]
cloud and we always have phones so
[704]
durability let's call it a five out of
[705]
five why not now before i tell you about
[707]
exactly what my favorite method is and
[709]
how these different methods fit into my
[710]
life
[711]
we're gonna have a quick note from our
[712]
sponsor for this week which is brilliant
[713]
we're very kindly sponsoring this video
[715]
and therefore indirectly funding my
[716]
addiction to books if you haven't heard
[717]
brilliant is a fantastic online platform
[719]
for courses in maths
[720]
science and computer science i
[722]
particularly enjoy the computer science
[724]
series in particular learning python
[725]
which is the world's most popular
[726]
programming language so
[728]
if you've ever thought that you want to
[729]
learn how to code you can check out
[731]
their basics and intermediate python
[733]
series which is awesome i've also
[734]
recently taken their crypto currencies
[736]
course which like explains
[737]
how cryptocurrencies work from the
[739]
ground up my crypto portfolio has been
[740]
doing insanely well this last month or
[742]
so
[743]
i probably can't put it down to me
[745]
taking the brilliant course but
[746]
taking that course really helped me get
[748]
a more foundational understanding of how
[750]
crypto actually works
[751]
and so now i'm pretty comfortable with
[752]
having like 20 of my net worth
[754]
in bitcoin and ethereum sadly not
[757]
dogecoin
[758]
uh and there's been like that for the
[759]
past few months so if that sounds up
[760]
your street and you want to level up
[761]
your math science or computer science
[763]
skills or you want to learn to code with
[764]
python or understand how
[765]
cryptocurrencies work like i do then
[767]
head over to brilliant.org forward slash
[768]
ally
[769]
and the first 200 people to click that
[770]
link will get 20 off the annual premium
[772]
subscription
[773]
so overall thoughts about these four
[775]
different methods of note-taking
[777]
if i could only choose one it would be
[780]
the kindle
[780]
and if i could choose two it would be
[782]
kindle plus audible but in fact i
[784]
actually use all four of these in my
[786]
life a different way so
[787]
kindle i always have at my bedside i
[789]
always read in bed on the kindle
[791]
and i like the kindle oasis it's a bit
[792]
overpriced but it does have a more of a
[794]
warm light and i use it on dark mode
[796]
so usually i just lie in bed i get my
[798]
kindle out i read and then when i notice
[800]
myself starting to fall asleep
[801]
i'll just chuck it across the floor on
[803]
the bedside table and then i'll fall
[804]
asleep so this is how i read the bulk of
[806]
the books that i read second most common
[808]
is audible i listen to audible when i'm
[810]
cycling when i'm driving
[811]
basically whenever i have down time and
[813]
then as i said if i need to take notes i
[814]
would just buy the book on kindle
[815]
because it's totally worth it and i will
[817]
take the notes
[818]
i use the ipad generally only when i
[820]
want to take
[821]
copious notes from a book that i've read
[822]
or when i want to summarize it where
[824]
i'll have
[824]
split screen open kindle on one side
[826]
notion or rome or draft on the other
[828]
side i'll be summarizing insights from
[829]
the book on the ipad and posting them on
[831]
my website so you can check that out at
[832]
alibaba.com if you want to see my book
[834]
summaries
[835]
and finally in terms of physical books i
[836]
only really have these around the house
[838]
because they look cool and so i can show
[839]
them off in videos but
[840]
i actually found that if i want to relax
[842]
for the evening and i'm not
[844]
in bed if i if it gets to like 9 pm and
[846]
i think you know what i'm not going to
[847]
play world of warcraft tonight i'm going
[848]
to read a book
[849]
then usually i'll pick up a physical
[850]
book and sit on the couch and just read
[852]
a physical book
[853]
so in a way all these four methods of
[855]
reading fit into my life but if i had to
[857]
choose the absolute best it would be the
[858]
kindle
[859]
followed by audible followed by physical
[861]
books followed by the ipad so hopefully
[863]
you guys found this video useful
[864]
if you want to learn more ways of
[866]
reading you can check out this video
[868]
over here which talks about
[869]
exactly how i read 100 books every year
[872]
so thank you for watching and i'll catch
[873]
you in the next video bye
