What is a VIRTUAL CREDIT CARD? (how to create & use them safely) - YouTube

Channel: All Things Secured

[0]
- You see this?
[1]
This is the credit card number I used,
[3]
just yesterday to pay for some landscaping work.
[5]
Yes, that is the real expiration date
[8]
and the real security pin.
[9]
This credit card, well, this is the one I use
[11]
to pay for my Netflix subscription.
[12]
But, before you get any ideas,
[14]
I'll go ahead and spoil your fun by telling you
[16]
that I've already closed these accounts and open new ones.
[19]
You're welcome to try those cards if you want,
[21]
but they won't work.
[22]
Now, how am I easily closing
[24]
and opening credit card accounts
[25]
without damaging my credit score?
[27]
Or waiting on a bank for weeks to send me a new card?
[31]
Welcome to the world of virtual credit cards.
[33]
And if you've never used one before, you're in for a treat.
[35]
You're not only gonna learn how they work in this video,
[37]
but you'll discover how to set them up yourself for free,
[40]
and learn an interesting new way
[42]
to protect your financial transactions online.
[44]
(mysterious sound)
[46]
(air whooshing) Welcome to All Things Secured.
[48]
My name's Josh.
[49]
And, just last week,,
[50]
I had a lawn care company send me an invoice
[52]
for work done on one of my rental properties.
[55]
This company accepts credit cards but they're old school,
[58]
and they don't yet have an online portal on their website.
[60]
I'm located outside of the country,
[62]
so they asked me to send my credit card information
[64]
via email.
[65]
If you know me by now,
[66]
you know that this send up a ton of red flags,
[69]
they're a reputable company, I'm sure,
[72]
but sending my info over email?
[74]
Yeah, I don't think so.
[76]
That's just asking for some sort of fraud.
[79]
So instead of sending them
[80]
my actual bank issued credit card,
[82]
I sent them a unique virtual credit card.
[84]
This card was limited
[85]
to the exact amount of the invoice they sent me,
[88]
which means the company couldn't run the card
[90]
for more money, even if they wanted to.
[91]
And it was single use.
[92]
So, the credit card was automatically closed
[94]
once the transaction was made.
[96]
That's the credit card number I showed you
[98]
at the beginning of this video.
[99]
And that's the power of a virtual card.
[102]
Even if the Lawn Care Company has their database hacked,
[105]
even if I give you and every other viewer of this video,
[107]
all the card info, it doesn't matter.
[109]
And, you can't say that about the credit card
[111]
that's in your wallet right now, can you?
[113]
And before I get to all the details,
[114]
you wanna know the best part?
[115]
The best part, is that for most of you watching this,
[118]
it's absolutely free to get this set up.
[121]
Now, kick things off.
[122]
I wanna show you my virtual credit card dashboard.
[124]
I'm using privacy.com, but this isn't a sponsored video.
[127]
And I'm also testing another service called Blur.
[130]
Unfortunately, at the time that I'm recording this video,
[132]
I don't see any other consumer options available.
[135]
And even these two are for US citizens or US residents only.
[139]
I know, that sucks for all of you
[141]
that are my international viewers, I'm really sorry.
[144]
If you know good alternatives
[145]
for those other parts of the world, please leave a comment
[148]
so that other people can check those out.
[150]
Anyway, let's go back to my dashboard.
[152]
Here, you see all the virtual cards
[154]
I've created on the left,
[155]
as well as any transaction activity here on the right.
[158]
I'm showing you on my computer,
[159]
but they also have an iOS and Android app I could use.
[162]
And creating a new card is as simple
[164]
as clicking new card here on the left,
[166]
giving it a nickname,
[167]
and then selecting any limitations I want.
[169]
And this is where things really get interesting to me.
[172]
Unlike any other credit card I have in my pocket,
[175]
with a virtual card,
[176]
I have the ability to set a monthly limit, a yearly limit,
[179]
a per transaction limit, a total spin limit,
[182]
or simply make it a single use card.
[185]
And just a little side note here,
[187]
you can't combine those limits.
[188]
You can't say, a per transaction limit
[191]
and then a total yearly transaction limit,
[194]
which I wish you could do, but that's for later.
[196]
But anyway,
[197]
so if I'm creating a card for my Disney+ subscription,
[199]
which currently costs me $8.65 when you include tax,
[204]
I will set a $9 monthly spending limit.
[207]
I can name the card,
[208]
I can even assign it a cute little logo.
[210]
And then within seconds,
[211]
you'll see that I have a new credit card number.
[214]
Now, I'll stop here and explain that,
[216]
during the setup process,
[217]
before everything you're seeing here,
[219]
I connected my chase checking account
[221]
via my debit card as a funding source for privacy.com.
[225]
So, any purchases I make through my virtual card,
[228]
are debited from my bank account one by one.
[231]
This doesn't get added to my credit card bill,
[233]
and I have to have cash in the bank to make these purchases,
[237]
and that's important to note.
[239]
That also means that by using a virtual credit card,
[241]
I'm missing out on any points
[243]
or miles that I might otherwise be trying to accumulate.
[245]
So, if you're one of those point hackers,
[247]
that's obviously bad news for you,
[249]
but privacy.com does offer a 1% cash back option
[252]
for it's paid pro members, okay.
[255]
So, back to the dashboard one more time.
[257]
I can take a look at each virtual card in detail
[259]
to see what transactions have taken place,
[261]
and then easily pause or close the card.
[265]
This level of control with my finances and online payments,
[268]
it gets me fired up, I love it.
[270]
Have you ever lost your credit card,
[272]
or had any sort of fraud before?
[274]
If so, then you know just how annoying it is
[277]
to contact your bank, have them close the account
[279]
and then wait for weeks while they issue
[282]
and mail you a new card, right?
[283]
You lose a little bit of the liability protection
[286]
that traditional credit cards offer,
[288]
but you make up for that
[289]
by setting exact limits on that liability.
[292]
In other words, sure.
[293]
I don't have protection
[294]
if someone steals my Disney+ credit card and uses it,
[297]
but since I've set it to a $9 monthly limit,
[300]
that's pretty much the extent of what I might lose.
[303]
As far as practical uses go,
[304]
I'll tell you now that I am not using a virtual credit card
[307]
for every single transaction I do.
[309]
And I'm slowly moving my subscription services
[312]
to these virtual cards that I have full control over
[315]
when my subscription ends.
[317]
If I can't easily find
[318]
that cancel subscription button anywhere,
[320]
I just close the card.
[321]
Take that you online services
[323]
that try to make it hard to unsubscribe from your service.
[325]
Oh, yeah, the one more thing
[326]
that I wanna think is really super cool.
[328]
You guys already know
[329]
that I'm a long time user of 1Password,
[331]
as my favorite password manager.
[333]
Well, 1Password and privacy.com
[335]
have integrated with each other,
[337]
and so now they make things even easier.
[339]
So, check this out.
[340]
When it comes to adding my billing information,
[342]
because I've already set up the integration
[344]
between my 1Password account and my Privacy account,
[347]
I can have 1Password automatically create
[349]
a new virtual card with privacy on the spot
[352]
when I'm trying to pay for something.
[354]
It's a super convenient feature.
[356]
Anyway, give virtual credit cards a try,
[358]
and let everyone know what you think in the comments below.
[361]
Do you think they're as cool as I do?
[362]
Or are you less enamored?
[363]
Do you think there's some sort of security risk
[365]
I haven't found yet?
[366]
And since you've made it this far to the end of the video,
[368]
go ahead and punch that like button.
[370]
I've heard rumor that you'll get hacked if you don't,
[372]
just saying.
