Where I'd live as a digital nomad on $1000 per month (or LESS) - YouTube

Channel: Sorelle Amore Finance

[0]
(speaking in foreign language)
[1]
My name is Sorelle Amore
[2]
and welcome to this finance and freedom channel.
[4]
One of the subjects on this channel is freedom,
[6]
and there isn't anything much more free to me
[8]
than being able to live wherever you choose to live
[11]
or moving around as much as you want
[13]
because your work is online.
[14]
Ultimate freedom.
[16]
In this video, I'm sharing in on my experiences
[18]
of being a digital nomad.
[19]
And if I had to choose some places in the world
[21]
to live for $1,000 USD a month, I'm gonna list them here.
[26]
(gentle music)
[29]
Before I get into this video, if you are new here,
[32]
I highly recommend that you subscribe.
[33]

[41]
Secondly, we have an amazing newsletter,
[44]
highly recommend on extra exclusive information
[46]

[48]
Lastly, we're giving a huge discount
[50]
for lifetime access to our new course membership
[53]
that we have just launched
[54]
on all things finance and freedom.
[55]
So if you'd like to find out more,
[57]
there's a link in the bio for that.
[58]
I don't think I need to really explain to you
[60]
what a digital nomad is anymore,
[62]
because YouTube is filled with people
[63]
that are gallivanting the world
[64]
and rubbing it into your faces.
[66]
Sometimes it feels like that.
[67]
So in this video, I'm gonna try to make it
[69]
more possible for you if this is a area of life
[72]
that you want to be exploring more.
[73]
To me, digital nomad just means
[75]
that you have zero ties to a location.
[77]
(sighs) The freedom experience with that,
[79]
there is downsides to being a (stuttering) digital nomad.
[84]
Having been one for a big chunk of my 20s,
[86]
I know that it is nice to at times have roots
[90]
and to have your own door where you return back home
[93]
and things are familiar.
[94]
The country's familiar.
[95]
You know how to operate in those countries.
[97]
Also, your friendship group,
[98]
you can expand it and really nurture that friendship group
[101]
because when you're a digital nomad, there are limitations.
[103]
But the upsides are worth it.
[105]
Even if you experience this type of life
[107]
for a short period of time just to know what it's like,
[109]
because you get to experience so many different,
[112]
beautiful cultures, and you get to immerse yourself
[115]
in the beauty of humanity.
[116]
And you see that the world is actually so beautiful
[119]
and everybody, most people are really nice.
[122]
I very rarely come across people that are not.
[124]
The safety levels also of most countries
[125]
that I've ever experienced are much higher than we're told.
[128]
The media is one thing.
[130]
And that's why I think experiencing the world
[132]
through the lens of your own eyes
[134]
to see the truth of the world is recommend highly.
[137]
And I will say that I found in my own experience
[140]
that being a digital nomad
[141]
is a lot more affordable than actually living in one spot.
[145]
I know that sounds counterintuitive.
[147]
I might have to do a video about this
[149]
breaking down the costs that I had
[150]
when I was living out of a suitcase,
[152]
and now having a full-time home.
[154]
So if you don't have that many ties
[155]
and you don't have to pick up your whole family with you,
[157]
I do think that it's actually good value for the buck.
[160]
Needless to say, let me share with you some experiences
[163]
of places I think are amazing to call home
[166]
if you have a smaller budget right now,
[168]
because it will make you realize
[169]
that this is very much doable for yourself
[171]
if you're starting out.
[172]
$1,000 a month, learning to generate this is doable.
[175]
Some of the countries and places
[177]
that I'm going to be mentioning,
[178]
it is Leon's top suggestions.
[180]
And then there are my top suggestions, his and hers.
[183]
$1,000 US a month.
[185]
For sure, I'm not gonna say
[186]
you're gonna have a flashy lifestyle.
[187]
So that's not what we're aiming for here.
[189]
It's just essentially to give you some hope.
[191]
If you're just starting out,
[192]
it can give you something to reach for
[194]
and make it really achievable for you.
[196]
You also have to consider that a lot of these places,
[198]
depending on your passport,
[199]
you won't be able to live there year round.
[201]
You can't just pick up and go, and voila, done.
[204]
It's more likely that you'll have to apply
[206]
for a longer-term visa and then just keep moving around
[208]
country to country throughout the year.
[209]
These country insights might also be interesting
[211]
for those people that live in a really expensive country.
[214]
And they're just bored of that world
[215]
that drains their bank account
[217]
just for existing in these places.
[219]
I can say Iceland is one of these places, for sure.
[221]
It's so incredibly expensive.
[223]
So if someone's looking for a bit of a break
[224]
so they can catch up financially,
[226]
maybe moving to these countries for awhile
[228]
would be beneficial for you.
[229]
Remember that this is not a one size fit all.
[231]
You have to check what your qualifications are
[234]
with your passport, how strong of a passport you have
[236]
in order to go to these places
[238]
and live there for a certain period of time.
[240]
So of course, this is just suggestions
[242]
and you have to do your own research, as always.
[244]
(gentle music)
[250]
I'm sure you're not really surprised
[251]
that I'm mentioning Bali.
[252]
Most people, when they think about digital nomads,
[254]
we automatically think Bali
[255]
because there's so many digital nomads over there
[258]
because there's a reason for it.
[260]
It is quite affordable
[261]
and the lifestyle there is incredible.
[263]
It's super comfortable.
[264]
I've been to Bali many times.
[266]
The people are so nice and it's so fun
[269]
on the little motorbikes going around everywhere.
[271]
I really, really enjoy Bali.
[274]
There are some downsides
[275]
that I've been experiencing with Bali
[276]
in the later times that I was going.
[278]
Essentially, there was just
[279]
so many tourists going there, like me.
[282]
How dare they (chuckles).
[283]
It was just getting a little bit out of control
[286]
when I was there last, especially around the Canggu area,
[288]
which I adored initially going there
[290]
about five or six years ago.
[291]
And then it just started getting a bit too intense
[294]
with the Australian drunkies
[297]
going out to party all the time.
[298]
My people are savages.
[300]
There is something magical about tropical living though.
[302]
I mean, you have access to these delicious mangoes
[305]
for so affordable.
[306]
The fruit there is affordable beyond belief.
[308]
The delicious food that they have.
[311]
Man, they cook so well.
[313]
You have these of course cafes that are popping up
[315]
left, right and center because all Australians
[317]
decided to move from Australia to Bali.
[320]
And now we have in Bali an amazing cafe scene with,
[323]
you have avocado on toast and the best coffees ever, mate.
[327]
It's just a comfortable lifestyle.
[328]
Mix that with a culture
[330]
that's a bit more lenient in some ways, in some ways,
[333]
it feels like you can just be a rebel and live large.
[337]
The other upside is that it's quite easy
[338]
to get a long-term visa in Bali for most passports,
[341]
but just watch out for the temptations
[343]
that you have over there of partying nonstop
[345]
and just spending way too much cash
[347]
on all these flashy things.
[349]
And whilst I do believe that the price of Bali
[351]
is going to continue to go up
[352]
because all of the foreigners are flocking there,
[354]
I do think that you can still live there
[355]
for about $1,000 a month
[357]
if you just move out of the touristy popular areas.
[360]
Of course, because there's so many digital nomads in Bali,
[362]
the internet speed is great and readily available.
[365]
Riga, Latvia.
[366]
This would be Leon's top choice
[367]
if he had to live somewhere for $1,000 a month.
[370]
We went to Latvia a few years ago, kind of by accident.
[373]
My mom, she was really excited to go there, and we went.
[376]
Leon was a bit wary.
[378]
He wasn't sure why mom would choose to go
[380]
to this tiny little country in the EU
[383]
that not many people know about.
[384]
If you don't know, it's a country in the north of Europe,
[386]
on the Baltic Sea, and it is between Lithuania and Estonia.
[390]
But it is kind of weird how quiet people are around Latvia
[393]
because it's actually a phenomenal country.
[395]
If you want to have that European vibe,
[398]
this is a country you want to explore.
[399]
The internet speeds here are incredible.
[402]
The food, if you like heavy European food.
[405]
For sure, I grew up with this and so did Leon.
[408]
Polish background, Austrian German background.
[410]
So we love this kind of food.
[412]
Most people also speak really good English here.
[414]
The people are incredibly polite and so nice
[418]
and so switched on, like really switched on.
[420]
Riga has a lot of that Soviet charm,
[422]
but also it is a beautiful area downtown.
[425]
It is magic.
[426]
You feel like you're stepping into a different time zone.
[428]
We personally only experienced this during winter.
[431]
So we've heard that it's extremely green during summer,
[434]
but we had a great time, even in winter.
[436]
It does get brutally cold there in winter.
[438]
So you have to keep that in mind.
[439]
Secondly, it doesn't exactly have the tropical feel.
[442]
So if you're looking for that,
[443]
this wouldn't be the best place for it.
[445]
Also, if you don't have an EU passport,
[446]
you'll only be able to live in Riga, Latvia
[449]
for 90 days out of 180 days.
[451]
Or every 90 days that you are in Riga,
[453]
you'll have to leave the EU for 180 days.
[456]
So that's the downside,
[457]
but it's okay if you're willing to move around a lot.
[459]
I mean, 90 days, it's still three months.
[462]
You can experience a lot in three months.
[463]
But with all the amazing cafes and co-working spaces
[466]
and a really, as I said, switched on crowd,
[469]
I think it'd be quite easy to meet amazing individuals here.
[472]
So it's a good choice.
[473]
Costa Rica, baby.
[476]
I love Costa Rica.
[477]
I had the pleasure of experiencing this country
[480]
a few years back and I went, funny enough,
[482]
during the rainy season and it was (lips smooching) magic.
[485]
It rains a lot, but only during a certain period of the day.
[487]
And you can just lie in a hammock and enjoy yourself
[490]
while listening to the sound of rain.
[492]
It's pretty spectacular.
[493]
It's really warm most of the year.
[495]
The downsides of Costa Rica,
[497]
I think it actually would be a little bit hard
[499]
to live off $1,000 a month there.
[502]
I don't think it's the most affordable place.
[504]
I think you would be scraping by a little bit
[507]
because there are so many people going there.
[509]
It is a really popular place to be.
[511]
Especially if you are in that section of the world,
[514]
Costa Rica is a very easy place to go to
[516]
because they are very welcoming to foreigners.
[519]
You do encounter a lot of English speakers there as well.
[522]
So nothing really uncomfortable.
[524]
For people that are most used to experiencing
[526]
say like the UK or Canada or Australia or America,
[529]
this country in the South Central Americas
[532]
is the least culture shock I think
[535]
because it is very nice and comfortable to be there.
[537]
The standard of living is very high.
[539]
But if you love the Spanish culture,
[541]
I think there's something here.
[542]
Bali was very much Asia, obviously,
[545]
but this is just that more rich culture of dancing
[549]
and expression and spirituality on the deeper levels.
[552]
It feels very sensual in a way, this country.
[556]
It's the way I could think to describe it.
[558]
And also, the internet speed is very, very good
[561]
in Costa Rica in most places.
[563]
Istanbul, Turkey.
[564]
This would be Leon's second pick.
[566]
I personally have not yet been there,
[567]
but I'm very excited to go.
[569]
Leon has been there once before and he loves it.
[571]
He thinks it would be absolutely an amazing place
[574]
for people to live there on a budget of $1,000 a month.
[576]
Istanbul is situated between Asia and Europe
[578]
over Turkey's Bosphorous Strait.
[581]
Basically, you could choose to live in Asia or Europe,
[584]
depending on what part of the city you live in.
[586]
For Leon, it's the food and it is the culture.
[588]
Istanbul is one of the oldest cities in the world
[590]
with over 1,000 years of history.
[593]
Leon adores the ancient architecture,
[595]
the mosques, the history,
[597]
but he says that the food there is absolutely exceptional.
[599]
It's one of his favorites.
[600]
He cooks a lot of Turkish food for us,
[602]
which is amazing for me.
[603]
You can eat extremely well on a really low budget.
[606]
A ton of people speak English in Turkey
[608]
and the internet speed apparently is very, very good,
[610]
so perfect for the nomadic lifestyle.
[612]
And for $1,000 a month,
[614]
you would absolutely have a great budget
[616]
in order to have your own apartment
[618]
or a cute little Airbnb in order for you to live in.
[620]
With your budget, it would cover the food, the transport,
[623]
and entertainment every now and again as well.
[625]
And Leon has said that it is some of the best coffee
[628]
that he's ever had in his entire life from Istanbul.
[631]
The downside that he has given me
[632]
is that it is not a tropical lifestyle,
[634]
so you're not gonna be sitting around
[635]
in a bikini on a beach.
[637]
But you can do that other times of the year.
[640]
So it is about diversifying your experiences
[642]
as a (stuttering) digital nomad because you're able to.
[646]
Finally, I would be battling between Mexico and Tanzania.
[651]
Tanzania, I went last year
[653]
and it was just a spectacular experience.
[656]
I was in Zanzibar and Arusha.
[658]
To me, Zanzibar is the ultimate turquoise water paradise.
[663]
The internet here, not so good,
[665]
but it is definitely affordable.
[667]
Africa is one of the places
[668]
I want to really experience a lot more of.
[670]
I think the culture there is so rich
[672]
and there's just so much wisdom to be found in these areas.
[674]
So I would love to spend more time in Tanzania.
[677]
There is an extremely laid back atmosphere in Zanzibar.
[680]
It is not high vibes or fast paced at all.
[683]
If you are all about lounging on the beaches,
[686]
and extreme heat, and bungalows, and lots of bugs,
[689]
then this place would be the one for you.
[691]
And Mexico, I'm only mentioning it
[693]
because there are places around the coastal area
[695]
where a lot of digital nomads go.
[697]
It is a hub for digital nomads.
[699]
When it comes to the safety,
[700]
and some people might be like, wary about that,
[702]
but there are areas
[703]
where there's just so many digital nomads
[705]
and they stick together in one hub.
[707]
I'm not sure if I'd choose Mexico myself
[709]
because I'd feel like I wouldn't be experiencing
[711]
the culture there as much because I think the nomads
[713]
just stick together like cheese and crackers.
[718]
Whenever I am traveling, I personally want to know
[720]
what it's like to actually live there.
[722]
And that means immersing myself with the locals as well
[724]
and the actual culture of it,
[726]
not just, oh my God, here with a cocktail.
[728]
Woo, let's go party with my friends
[730]
that are not actually from here.
[731]
So that's the downside of Mexico for me.
[733]
I'm just gonna give you a few more recommendations,
[735]
not personally from my experience,
[736]
but because they are very well-known
[738]
to be digital nomad hubs.
[739]
And it would be a disservice
[740]
if I don't mention these options for you as well
[742]
if this lifestyle is something
[743]
that you're currently researching.
[745]
Tblisi, Georgia.
[746]
So we're talking about Georgia the country here,
[748]
not the Georgia state in the USA.
[750]
Leon and I have not been here,
[752]
but we can't wait to go there.
[753]
It is so popular on the list for nomads to go and explore.
[756]
So this is why we have to get there,
[757]
not only because apparently the internet is amazing,
[759]
but they have great online services for online banking,
[763]
payment processing, modern infrastructure.
[765]
This country I think has made it a priority
[767]
to make sure that digital nomads come here
[769]
and they spend their money there.
[771]
The country has made it very easy for small entrepreneurs
[774]
to go and essentially permanently live in Georgia
[777]
on a few residential permits.
[778]
And the tax rate for entrepreneurs is super low at just 1%.
[781]
For the purposes of this video, it doesn't really matter
[783]
because we're talking about being a nomad
[785]
and moving around the world.
[787]
However, if you're looking for a more permanent base,
[789]
Georgia could be the country.
[790]
Also, it is beautiful.
[791]
It looks incredibly beautiful.
[793]
Apparently the wine there is the best
[795]
because they claim that maybe potentially
[797]
wine was actually invented here.
[799]
And apparently it's also extremely affordable to live there.
[802]
So you can live it up for your budget
[805]
of $1,000 US a month.
[806]
El Salvador.
[807]
I actually really love El Salvador.
[809]
I've gone multiple times now.
[810]
I would have put this on the list up higher,
[812]
but it needed its own little bracket
[813]
because there's something very exciting about El Salvador.
[816]
It looks like El Salvador is trying to become a haven
[818]
for cryptocurrency holders.
[820]
Recently, the government has made Bitcoin
[822]
an official legal tender,
[824]
so you can actually pay for things with Bitcoins.
[827]
It is just as valid as the other currency in El Salvador,
[830]
which is the US dollar.
[831]
Furthermore, you can actually apply for residency
[834]
in El Salvador if you have three Bitcoins
[836]
or the equivalent of that.
[837]
You can see that El Salvador is trying to make this country
[840]
a lot more appealing to stockholders,
[842]
to traders, to digital nomads.
[844]
I think it's a great step for the country.
[846]
It is an amazing country.
[847]
I thoroughly enjoy my time there.
[849]
A lot of people have concerns with the safety,
[851]
which I know they've been really trying hard
[853]
to mitigate that and fix this problem.
[855]
I personally felt very safe in El Salvador,
[857]
but I was in a nice little area of El Salvador
[859]
with a lot of amazing local friends that are there.
[861]
So I felt really, really great there.
[863]
Do you want to speak Spanish?
[864]
You will have to speak Spanish.
[866]
But that's an easy language to learn.
[868]
It's also a bit of a culture shock, which I always love.
[870]
If you're not someone that likes to feel
[872]
a little bit of a culture shock,
[873]
then I wouldn't use this one as the first country
[876]
that you go to because the way that people operate,
[878]
it's just a really laid back environment.
[880]
People don't necessarily care so much about the rules.
[883]
The food there is incredible though.
[886]
The waves there are incredible.
[888]
If you're a surfer, it is a vibe.
[890]
It is such vibe.
[891]
You feel like the coolest person alive just being there.
[894]
I love it.
[895]
The skating scene there is amazing.
[896]
The Brazilian jujitsu scene there is amazing.
[898]
The surfing scene.
[899]
There's a lot, a lot on offer in this country,
[901]
and the people are incredible.
[903]
Sha right, that's it for this video.
[904]
Thank you so much for watching.
[906]
Which country do you think you would be
[907]
so inclined to go to?
[909]
Also, if you have extra countries that you would recommend,
[912]
if you're a digital nomad or you've experienced it,
[914]
please let us know down below.
[915]
I would love to know myself
[916]
because I cannot wait to go traveling again soon.
[921]
It's gonna be really nice just to feel what it feels like
[923]
to be a digital nomad again.
[925]
I'm really excited for that.
[927]
I've chosen to not travel much in the last 12 months,
[929]
which has been a shock to the system,
[931]
but I've learned a lot about myself
[933]
and also gave us the opportunity to start new ventures,
[935]
like this YouTube channel
[936]
that you are such a huge supporter of.
[938]
Thank you so much for liking commenting, subscribing.
[940]
It's great to have you here.
[942]
Just a reminder, we do have that amazing presale
[944]
going on right now for our course and membership.
[946]
