All-Female Mariachi Band Breaks Glass Ceiling In Male-Dominated Genre - YouTube
Channel: The Kelly Clarkson Show
[0]
- As Hispanic Heritage
Month comes to a close,
[2]
I want to introduce a
group of women shattering
[4]
the glass ceiling in the male
dominated world of mariachi.
[7]
Their goal is to keep this
traditional Mexican music alive
[11]
while adding a touch of femininity.
[13]
From Sacramento, California, give it up
[15]
for Dinorah, Janessa,
Audra, Jordan and Samantha.
[19]
Mariachi Bonitas!
[21]
(mariachi music begins)
[25]
(Mariachi Bonitas singing
in foreign language)
[46]
(mariachi music ends)
[48]
(audience cheering)
[52]
Come on over.
[54]
Oh my god!
[57]
I loved it!
[59]
It's nice to meet you.
[60]
- It's nice to meet you, Kelly.
[61]
- Nice to meet you.
[63]
Have a seat.
[64]
- Thank you.
[65]
- Oh my god, it sounds so beautiful.
[67]
I grew up singing a harmony
with like a bunch of girls too.
[69]
It's just the blend is so nice.
[71]
- Thank you so much. - It's so beautiful.
[72]
- I don't know if everybody's met.
[73]
But meet Hasan and Malia.
- Yes. Hello, hi.
[75]
- I grew up near Sacramento. Davis.
[78]
(audience cheering)
[81]
- He's like represent.
[82]
- Yes, very well.
[83]
- Well, I want to share a little bit,
[85]
a little bit more about the lyrics
[86]
of what you were saying.
[87]
So they're translating in English
[89]
and it's "beautiful are the
women of my beloved Mexico.
[92]
"Beautiful are it's songs,
[94]
"it's valleys and mountains.
[95]
"Beautiful are the stars
that shine upon its beaches,
[98]
"and Mariachi Bonitas sing with joy
[101]
"to our beautiful country."
[102]
That's so cool.
[103]
- Thank you, thank you, thank you.
[106]
- I wanted everybody to
know what you're singing.
[108]
So you wrote that song, right?
- I did, I did.
[110]
- Okay so why, why is a song
like this so important to you?
[113]
- Well I wanted to have, for us to have
[117]
a theme that not only
represent us as women.
[120]
Like you say, Mariachi
Bonitas is very feminine.
[123]
That's representing what we are.
[125]
But not only that is, is to
[127]
give a tribute, pay a
tribute to the culture,
[130]
to our music, to our art.
[132]
That is so, so us, you know.
[134]
And being far away from Mexico
[136]
well of course you have
to, have that in you
[138]
and in, in playing this song makes us
[142]
just have Mexico in our hearts, you know.
[143]
- [Kelly] Yeah.
[144]
- Closer to us.
[145]
And now being all females as well,
[147]
we can be a little, you
know, sassy and feminine
[151]
and so, we can get away with that.
[152]
- You bring something different.
[153]
Yeah, I love that.
[155]
Well, Audra and Jordan, why
did you want to join in?
[157]
What does it mean to you
to be a part of the group?
[159]
- [Audra] Well I've been,
[160]
I've been playing the
violin for over 16 years
[163]
and I was a high school Spanish teacher.
[164]
And I saw a huge decline
in knowledge of mariachi.
[169]
They thought it was all the same thing.
[170]
I was like, no man,
this is beautiful stuff.
[172]
So I, you know, I cooperate with lessons.
[175]
But more than that,
[176]
I really wanted to empower the females
[179]
in my high school that I was teaching at.
[181]
And just in general that you
don't see that many females
[184]
in mariachi world.
[185]
- I've never seen it until today.
[187]
Honest to God.
[188]
That's why I was like,
[189]
when I was so excited
about y'all coming on,
[190]
I was like, I have seen
a lot of mariachi bands,
[192]
I feel like in my lifetime
[193]
and I've never seen a female in it.
[195]
So I thought it was so cool.
[196]
- [Audra] Yeah.
[197]
- [Kelly] Well, Jordan, how about you?
[198]
(audience clapping)
[201]
- I saw her post on Facebook
and I am not Hispanic,
[204]
but I have played in orchestras.
[206]
I've played in jazz bands and operas
[210]
and I thought, I'm going to do it.
[212]
I'm going to try it, I'm
going to see what it's like.
[214]
And I started, it was,
[215]
it was a little bit rough of a start,
[217]
but we practiced every
week. It's so much fun.
[220]
The culture, I've completely
embraced the culture.
[223]
It is a family everywhere we go.
[225]
We've played gigs where they feed us.
[227]
They're dancing and singing.
[228]
And it is so much fun.
[229]
I've never experienced
anything like this before.
[232]
- See I kind of loved
your story from this.
[234]
Like I was,
[236]
(mumbles)
[237]
reading last night about you in the group.
[238]
And I was like, I love that like,
[240]
everybody always thinks
that you have to be like,
[242]
oh you have to be Mexican to like this.
[243]
I'm like, no, you don't.
[244]
You don't have to be any kind of color,
[246]
walk a lot to like any
kind of music or anything.
[248]
And I think that that's really cool.
[250]
The other little girls see
that as an opportunity as well.
[253]
- [Jordan] Yeah.
[254]
- So it's really cool what you're doing.
[254]
It's beautiful music, I love it.
[256]
- [Female Mariachi's]
Thank you, thank you.
[257]
- [Kelly] It's so beautiful
[258]
But Sammy, what about you?
[260]
- Well, I started in high school.
[263]
I got out of high school
[264]
and I was gigging professionally,
like with other musicians,
[267]
and then Dinorah contacted
me about the all girl group
[270]
and I was like, yeah, why not, you know?
[272]
I think it's really important
that we're an all girl group
[275]
because traditionally it's all men.
[276]
- [Kelly] Yeah.
[277]
- [Sammy] You know, and we're like, bam!
[278]
in your face, you know, like.
[279]
(group laughing)
[281]
So, yeah, that.
- I love that.
[283]
That's so cool.
[284]
And what a cool sisterhood too,
[285]
to like, share like in that that's cool.
[287]
- [Sammy] Yeah, these are my homies.
[288]
- Yeah, that's so good.
[289]
That's so good. And Janessa,
you're the youngest, right?
[292]
- Yes, I am.
[292]
- [Kelly] So, so I mean,
what do you love about it?
[295]
- Yeah, so I'm 17 years old
[297]
and music has always been my passion.
[300]
I believe I got my love for
music from my grandfather.
[303]
He is a Colombian composer.
[304]
Unfortunately, he passed last year.
[306]
However, being able to
be a part of this band
[308]
let's me be close to him,
let's me connect with him
[311]
and as well, let's me be able
to connect with my heritage.
[313]
And of course being a part
of this group gives me
[316]
it's, it's an amazing experience
[317]
and it's an amazing opportunity
[319]
to be with such a
wonderful group of ladies.
[321]
- Beautiful.
[321]
And you actually, Malia,
you're working hard right now
[324]
to help women get their
voices heard right now,
[326]
as well right?
[326]
- Yeah, I'm co-hosting #GirlHero Awards
[329]
on October 14th and I
just feel really honored
[331]
to be a part of such an
incredible community for sure.
[334]
- Absolutely.
[335]
Yes, stand up for each other.
