2022 Contribution Limit 401k, TSP, Roth IRA, HSA, FSA, Simple IRA/401k, SEP IRA - YouTube
Channel: Tim Wolffe

Hey guys Tim Wolffe here, I'm going to聽
do a quick video breaking down the 2022聽聽
[4]
contribution limits and income limits for聽
accounts like the ira, 401k and hsa. If you聽聽
[10]
are new here please go ahead and SUBSCRIBE I post聽
financial education videos helping you to learn聽聽
[15]
where you're at with your wealth, where聽
you want to go and how to get there.
[22]
Alright let's get right into it, I'm going to聽
list off a lot of numbers here if you want to聽聽
[25]
see just a straight up excel spreadsheet I will聽
post that on my website you can check that out.聽聽
[30]
So for the ira you can contribute up to six聽
thousand dollars in 2021 and for 2022 they're聽聽
[36]
gonna keep that at six thousand dollars. For the聽
ira catch up (the "individual retirement account"聽聽
[41]
catch up) and remember this is for roth ira聽
and traditional ira... if you're turning age 50聽聽
[47]
within the year 2022... so you're age 50聽
and older you can contribute $7,000 a year聽聽
[52]
in 2021 and they're keeping that the same聽
for 2022. It's kind of unfortunate to see聽聽
[57]
no change to the ira contribution this year聽
because inflation is through the roof: 4%-5%,聽聽
[62]
where normally it's only around 2%-2.5%. So聽
as inflation rises it would be helpful if the聽聽
[69]
limit rose so we can contribute more money. But聽
they do make up for in other areas we'll check聽聽
[73]
that out later. Also keep in mind for your ira聽
if you want to file for 2021 you don't have to聽聽
[80]
do it by december 31st of 2021 you actually have聽
until the federal tax deadline of april 15th聽聽
[88]
2022. So you can contribute to this year 2021 all聽
the way up to april 15th of 2022. The roth ira聽聽
[95]
income limit for a single person last year was up聽
to $125,000 dollars, this year they're raising it聽聽
[101]
to a $129,000 and if you're married last year was聽
a $198,000 this year in 2022 they're raising it聽聽
[109]
to $204,000. So you can make up to that amount of聽
money and you can still be eligible to contribute聽聽
[115]
to a roth ira. If you make over that amount of聽
money you may want to consider doing a back door聽聽
[120]
roth ira where you contribute to a traditional ira聽
and immediately roll it over to a roth ira because聽聽
[125]
you're not going to be eligible to do the full six聽
thousand dollars into a roth ira because you make聽聽
[130]
too much money. And for your 401ks, 403bs, 457bs,聽
and TSPs in 2021 it was $19,500 in 2022 they have聽聽
[140]
raised it to $20,500 that you can contribute.聽
So we see a thousand dollar difference there聽聽
[146]
increase that we can contribute to our 401k.聽
Again this is roth and traditional as well as the聽聽
[152]
catch up for the 401k, the 403b, TSP or 457b with聽
$6,500 in 2021 they kept that the same at $6,500聽聽
[162]
in 2022. Just meaning that if you are turning age聽
50 or older in the year 2022 you can contribute up聽聽
[169]
to $27,000 into your 401k . Now the total that you聽
can contribute to all defined compensation plans聽聽
[176]
has risen... It's gone from $58,000 last year聽
to up to $61,000 so we see a $3,000 increase.聽聽
[185]
And what this means is if you do have a 401k and a聽
457b or you have a 401k at your company and a 403b聽聽
[193]
you can actually contribute to both of those聽
accounts the total however cannot exceed $61,000聽聽
[200]
of your own money, that doesn't include your聽
employer contributions. Just the employees聽聽
[205]
own contributions. And moving on to the HSA-聽
the "health savings account" this is for all聽聽
[210]
qualified medical expenses. If you are a single聽
individual it went up from thirty six hundred聽聽
[215]
dollars to $3,650 so we get an extra fifty聽
dollars we can contribute there in 2022.聽聽
[221]
And for the hsa family plan you can go from $7,200聽
up to $7,300 dollars so we got a hundred dollar聽聽
[228]
increase in 2022 for the hsa family. And the hsa聽
catch-up is not changing it's still one thousand聽聽
[234]
dollars in 2022 and you have to be turning age 55聽
or older and you'll be eligible to contribute an聽聽
[239]
extra thousand dollars into your hsa. And again聽
just like the 401k this does not include employer聽聽
[244]
contributions it's your own contributions only.聽
So if you do have a match in your hsa or your聽聽
[250]
employer puts a thousand dollars in you can still聽
do the $3,650 or the $7,300. If you're a family聽聽
[256]
in the FSA- the "flexible spending account" in聽
2021 was $2,750 and it went up a hundred dollars聽聽
[262]
in 2022 you can contribute $2,850 dollars into an聽
FSA. The contribution limits for a simple ira or聽聽
[269]
a simple 401k went up from $13,500 to $14,000. So聽
we saw a $500 increase there in 2022. You can do聽聽
[278]
up to $14,000 now simple ira or simple 401ks. If聽
you've never heard that before it's typically for聽聽
[284]
businesses that have fewer than 100 employees聽
they offer those. And for the last one the SEP聽聽
[289]
IRA went up from $58,000 to now in 2022 you can聽
contribute $61,000. So we saw a three thousand聽聽
[295]
dollar increase to the SEP IRA. A SEP IRA is a聽
"simplified employee pension", this is typically聽聽
[301]
for people that are self-employed with you're the聽
only employer maybe you have one or two employees.聽聽
[306]
And if you have a question about anything just go聽
ahead and throw it in the comment section guys...聽聽
[310]
I'll be sure to answer it. If you have multiple聽
questions or you just have no idea where to聽聽

first? Do I do both? Should I be contributing into聽聽
