So You Want to Rebuild a Wrecked Supercar - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[0]
- Salvaged exotics.
[1]
It's a thing that people are doing all over YouTube.
[4]
They take totaled cars
[5]
from all around the United States of America,
[7]
only to document their build process
[9]
do burnouts and make you think that,
[10]
"Hey, maybe buying a totaled Modena 360 isn't that hard."
[16]
And what I have to say to that is,
[17]
"You know well, cool your jets, kid.
[19]
"'Cause it ain't that easy."
[20]
I'm Alex from Fitment Industries, Alex.FI.
[22]
And on this episode of "So You Want," we're talking
[24]
to all you whipper-snappers
[25]
that wanna buy a salvaged exotic.
[27]
(upbeat music)
[42]
Now, before we get into this twister-style storm
[45]
of a conversation, don't forget to subscribe.
[47]
And hey, if you've already bought a salvaged exotic
[49]
or you have a car on stock wheels or suspension,
[52]
maybe you're looking for a little help there.
[53]
We're just gonna need to stop you right there, bud,
[54]
because we have aftermarket wheels, tires
[56]
or suspension all on Fitmentindustries.com.
[59]
Because it's what we do and we're pretty good at it.
[61]
Anyway, moving forward.
[63]
We've seen it everywhere.
[65]
Goonzquad, TJ Hunt.
[66]
JR Garage, Samrac.
[68]
Hoovies Garage, Tavarish or Tavarish.
[71]
B is for Build and probably 25 other YouTube channels.
[75]
Jump on the hype train, boys, because YouTube is
[77]
all about repairing totaled exotics right meow.
[79]
But where did it come from?
[82]
You know, where did it go?
[84]
Where could it have come from,
[86]
Cotton Eye Joe?
[89]
Buying salvaged exotics isn't anything inherently too new.
[91]
A market for totaled toys existed for quite awhile
[95]
before this hype.
[96]
You had shops picking these cars up,
[98]
repairing them on the weekends,
[99]
and selling them for a nickel more than the purchased price
[102]
to those that wanted to be seen in a Ferrari
[104]
without having to pay for that crisp, clean batch.
[107]
They were used as a backdrop vehicle for movies,
[109]
music videos, and of course sold to those
[111]
that maybe didn't want the cleanest of exotics,
[113]
but you know they wanted to flax.
[117]
Yeah I'd like the cheapest 360 that you have.
[120]
Sure, this one had a little bit of fire.
[122]
Can you tell?
[123]
Can you tell that there's fire damage?
[126]
Yeah.
[127]
Well, I mean, it's mostly just on the interior.
[130]
I'll take it.
[131]
I just um, I'm gonna, I'll take the car.
[132]
Then I'm gonna need some 5% tint on that bad boy,
[135]
okay, and don't tell anybody.
[136]
Exotics salvaged cars began to hit more main stream waves
[139]
when Copart and other auction sites began to host
[141]
easier navigation and bidding styles to the world wide web.
[145]
But, Copart wasn't the only one.
[147]
Multiple auction websites began popping up that had
[149]
nationwide junk yards with plenty of vehicles
[152]
that were once on a childhood poster
[154]
in little Johnny's room.
[155]
So with that and paired with the wonderful world of
[157]
entertainment of YouTube,
[159]
it became like a match made in automotive heaven.
[162]
People began to take totaled cars from the junkyard,
[164]
repair them in the garage,
[165]
and then sell them for as much profit as they could.
[167]
In the meantime, the videos made off of the rebuild process
[169]
would help support them
[171]
and of course you had some ad revenue with t-shirts and
[173]
stuff like that.
[174]
It was like all the good stuff.
[175]
Most channels started with RX-8's,
[177]
Corvettes, Chargers, RX-7's,
[178]
and other ten to 20-ish thousand cars
[181]
that had absolutely nothing to do with exotics.
[183]
Mostly because that (beep) scary.
[186]
Most channels didn't have enough capital or equity
[189]
to buy a salvaged exotic.
[190]
But then, then it came.
[192]
Salved Ferraris,
[194]
salvaged Lambourghinis,
[196]
salved Hellcats,
[198]
salvaged relationships,
[200]
salvaged Porsches,
[202]
salvaged stuff.
[205]
The YouTube channels started blowing up with more insane,
[207]
more high end cars that people couldn't believe
[208]
were being repaired.
[210]
$50,000 views on a rebuild video of your RX-7, useless.
[214]
100,000 on a motor swap of your RX-7, pathetic.
[217]
These days the salvage exotic rebuild videos will begin
[220]
to reach millions of views and hundreds of thousands
[223]
of new subscribers.
[225]
The days of hitting trending on a rebuild video series
[227]
would be impossible back in 2015,
[229]
but now, look at that.
[230]
How neat is that.
[232]
Which is likely why your eyeballs are here,
[234]
wondering how and why you're able to do that.
[237]
After all it's probably the coolest idea that the automotive
[239]
scene has had in a hot minute.
[241]
Well, before you decide to empty your 401k,
[244]
what is it actually like to do something like this?
[246]
What is it actually like to own a salvaged exotic
[249]
and what is it actually like to build a salvaged exotic?
[252]
Buying a salvaged exotic is more than just popping up
[254]
a blog camera,
[255]
making a 30 minute episode,
[256]
and praying that you sell a few T's.
[258]
First it starts with what sort of car you can
[260]
and are able to buy.
[262]
Most auctions require a dealer license
[264]
and with the non-licensed auctions not having as much
[267]
meat on the bones.
[268]
So, really you're going to wanna think about getting one
[270]
of those little dealer auction licenses.
[273]
You're gonna need a secondary address,
[274]
but it's actually pretty easy.
[277]
From there you gotta decide on what sort
[278]
of dysfunctional relationship you'd like to have with a car
[281]
that hardly runs, or if runs at all.
[284]
Do you wanna repair the front end of a Huracan?
[285]
Well, you'd better research on
[286]
how much those headlights are going to cost because whisper,
[289]
it's $3,000 a headlight.
[291]
A headlight, not per headlight.
[294]
Not your cup of tea?
[295]
Don't worry.
[296]
There's so much more out there.
[297]
What about a GT3,
[299]
with rear end damage?
[301]
That is only five-ish thousand dollars for an OEM
[305]
rear bumper clip.
[307]
Fire/flood damage?
[308]
That's more for people that actually just hate their life.
[310]
Side impact damage from a Ferrari 458?
[313]
Doors are only like four G's, son!
[315]
Turn it into a safari Ferrari and just send it,
[317]
because you threw all of your money into the car initially.
[320]
You'd be disappointed at just how much additional funds
[322]
are required to fix that small front end damage.
[326]
And, well salvaged exotics are also quite
[328]
the dangerous game.
[329]
Because they are,
[331]
now hear me out,
[332]
salvaged exotics are exotics.
[336]
The tolerance built into the cars like Ferrari
[337]
and Lambourghinis are quite low,
[339]
and if anything is slightly misaligned or misdone,
[341]
that stuff just don't work.
[343]
Don't always believe the photos.
[345]
Nothing is ever that simple than front end damage,
[347]
as much as we all wish that were true.
[350]
It's really going to be true on cars that cost more
[353]
than a home.
[354]
Try to find one that has damage in an area that you
[356]
are most experienced in.
[357]
So front end, rear end, side,
[358]
electrical, dents and scratches,
[360]
run the VIN,
[361]
review every pixel of those 10 photos you see,
[362]
pretty much everything you need to do is to
[364]
stalk this car's history.
[365]
Not kidding.
[366]
Because once you buy it,
[367]
it's all on you and this goes for if you're buying a
[369]
salvaged exotic after the fact
[371]
because somebody else did all of this for you.
[374]
So does this mean that you shouldn't buy
[375]
a salvaged exotic?
[377]
Well, no.
[378]
We've all been out on Copart
[379]
and looked at some of our dream cars
[380]
and just thought, "Maybe I could do it?"
[382]
And the truth is, is that you can.
[384]
You're just gonna need the following resources.
[387]
If you're looking to buy a salvaged exotic to repair,
[390]
then whatever you spend on the car,
[391]
you'll wanna have that much additional in cash equity
[394]
for parts, labor and insurance.
[396]
So if you're spending 50 G's on a GTR,
[398]
it's good to have another 50 just in case,
[401]
so you don't lose your (beep) and aren't stuck with a car
[402]
that doesn't run.
[403]
This number will go down after you've done a certain
[406]
amount of cars or maybe you own multiple of the car.
[408]
Just don't get carried away
[409]
and overspend on the car initially.
[411]
There's nothing worse than going into a build
[413]
and running out of money.
[414]
The second biggest thing that you're gonna wanna have
[416]
are partnerships.
[417]
Many of these big channels have partnerships.
[419]
Most of these vehicles end up needing air bag replacement,
[421]
which plenty of interior alteration shops can handle.
[423]
Broken wheels, flat tires or mangled suspension,
[426]
they go to FitmentIndustries.com,
[427]
where they get to pick out what works for their car
[429]
without having to pay an (beep) load of money.
[430]
Honestly guys, just be glad it's not a 60-second
[432]
SquareSpace ad, okay?
[434]
Besides, that's like literally our actual job.
[436]
Autobody partners and paint shops all sign up to help these
[439]
guys with repairing their vehicles
[440]
under normal price.
[442]
This lets them keep costs down and still turn it
[444]
for a profit if or when they decide to sell it.
[447]
And they're either gonna sell it to you,
[448]
or they're gonna sell it to a fan.
[449]
So a small amount of automotive knowledge
[451]
is also gonna be needed.
[452]
Because it's like my dad always said.
[454]
"Alex, you have the capability of taking something apart
[458]
"and putting it back together so well,
[461]
"that if you were to do it five times,
[462]
"you'd have enough left over parts to make a second piece."
[466]
Didn't really feel like a compliment, that one.
[468]
Automotive knowledge is important,
[469]
but knowing your way around problems of wiring,
[471]
structural damage and more is even more important.
[474]
If you don't have it,
[475]
you'd better pray that the other buddy that went
[477]
halvsies on the car with you does.
[479]
Last but not least you're also going to want to record it.
[481]
People love watching build series about
[483]
as much as I do ramen.
[485]
Making a channel helps you earn a little cash on the side
[487]
to help keep the build going.
[489]
And if you do it right,
[490]
you may actually end up with a successful channel.
[493]
Now, here's a pro-tip for you all out there.
[495]
Start small.
[497]
Find a car that you'd want to own
[498]
even if it doesn't pan out,
[500]
So you don't have the risk of being stuck with something
[502]
that you hate.
[503]
Although everyone is all about super cars right now,
[505]
that's not to stay that it'll stay that way.
[506]
People watch build series for the people that are
[508]
in the series and how they go about building a car.
[512]
It's not always going to be just for the car.
[515]
So you wanna buy a salvaged exotic?
[517]
Neat.
[518]
It's a dangerous game that's a bit like gambling.
[519]
You'll win every once in a while,
[521]
you'll lose every once in a while.
[523]
But if you stay consistent,
[525]
and always get the free drinks
[527]
when the bartender comes around,
[528]
you'll likely end up having a good time,
[529]
only lose a little bit every once in awhile,
[531]
and maybe, just maybe,
[533]
you'll walk away from the table with your pants still on.
[536]
So if you were to buy a salvaged exotic
[538]
for a YouTube channel, what would you buy?
[540]
Drop a comment and let us know.
[541]
If you need to spark some creative juices before answer,
[543]
you can head over to our gallery at FitmentIndustries.com
[545]
where you can see about 10,000 different vehicles
[548]
that have all had stuff done to their car.
[550]
So you might see something that you like.
[552]
Personally, I would do it a first gen NSX, just saying,
[555]
but that's besides the point.
[556]
Anyway, I'm Alex from Fitment Industries,
[558]
We hope you enjoyed this episode of "So you want,"
[559]
We will see you guys later.
[561]
Peace.
