[7]
joe no middle name founder brainshare what聽 is this culture thing i keep hearing about聽聽
[14]
well sean thanks for joining us here it's awesome聽 to see you again and culture eats strategy聽聽
[21]
for breakfast that's tom peters now when we talk聽 about culture everyone was like what does that聽聽
[27]
mean how do you do that how do i adjust my culture聽 and that's one of the key factors because how do聽聽
[33]
you define culture sean i don't know i mean i聽 keep hearing about some of these companies that聽聽
[38]
are successful but it's a toxic culture and then聽 it just destroys itself and then there's lawsuits聽聽
[44]
once there's money and that all these bad things聽 happen but i don't know joe do you have a better聽聽
[50]
definition of what culture actually is then you聽 know what happens when you have a toxic culture聽聽
[54]
or you know the culture is more bully each聽 other yell each other where they're you know聽聽
[60]
backstabbed kind of like game of thrones kind of聽 like game of thrones then actually some companies聽聽
[66]
might look and feel like game of thrones and聽 so a couple of things that i like to say is聽聽
[71]
that company culture is defined by the worst聽 behavior a leader is willing to tolerate so聽聽
[79]
think about your business your company and what's聽 being tolerated there now one of the other things聽聽
[88]
is if you don't define your culture it will be聽 defined for you and i guarantee you you will not聽聽
[96]
like it so one of the basic foundation pieces is聽 defining your culture and then living up to it聽聽
[105]
when you define your culture that's how you hire聽 and fire people i'm going to tell you a true story聽聽
[112]
i was working for a little electronics company聽 that was a fortune 50 company that's tiny yeah聽聽
[118]
it was pretty small if you look at my linkedin聽 and figure out who it is oh anything higher than聽聽
[123]
five i only look at well the the couple one of聽 our company culture um uh foundational pieces聽聽
[133]
is we didn't talk bad about our competition that聽 was just one of our company culture things right聽聽
[141]
well one of our top sales people adam event聽 was actually talking about about competition聽聽
[150]
now after the event now i was young in my聽 career i didn't understand things so bad聽聽
[156]
but that employee was terminated and聽 i was just flabbergasted how can we聽聽
[163]
terminate one of our best sales people聽 we're talking about about the competition聽聽
[170]
i didn't understand that as part of the company聽 culture as part of that's who we are we don't talk聽聽
[178]
bad about the competition and that's it that's聽 part of who we are simon sinek talks about this a聽聽
[186]
little bit and know your why why how you know and聽 defining that but company culture is everything聽聽
[194]
and you must define it otherwise it will聽 get defined for you and after you define it聽聽
[201]
it must be live and i mean you have to hire and聽 fire to that company culture that you've defined聽聽
[210]
wait so joe are you trying to tell聽 me say you want this culture of聽聽
[215]
friendliness where everyone is helping each聽 other where everyone's growing together聽聽
[219]
but this top salesperson comes along聽 you have the opportunity to hire them聽聽
[223]
and everyone knows it's a very toxic person聽 that you know speaks bad about everyone and will聽聽
[229]
basically kill anyone to get ahead in life are聽 you trying to tell me that person could alter the聽聽
[235]
culture of the business if they will alter the聽 culture of the business because the culture is聽聽
[240]
defined by the worst behavior a leader is willing聽 to tolerate so if you want to look at some books聽聽
[246]
or some information about that in my uh expert聽 opinion five dysfunctions of a team is one of the聽聽
[253]
best books the advantage which is the follow-on聽 to that is another great book that talks about聽聽
[260]
a smart organization versus a healthy organization聽 and after you read the book you'll i think you'd聽聽
[267]
much rather have a healthy organization than聽 a smart it's people working together because聽聽
[273]
teamwork is about teamwork is the only place that聽 math doesn't work interesting so let me explain聽聽
[284]
in teams one plus one could equal three or even聽 five when two or three people work together聽聽
[292]
they can have the same effect as five six or even聽 ten people working individually so the finding聽聽
[299]
the culture living it breathing it make basing聽 your hiring and your firing processes on that聽聽
[305]
is a key success factor to growing a business聽 that could be sustainable predictable stable聽聽
[312]
consistent and emotionally connected which to聽 me is a legacy business wow and those legacy聽聽
[318]
businesses i mean they're the ones that have the聽 value when they go out to market but let's save聽聽
[323]
