What EV Start-Up Rivian Is Doing That Tesla Isn't - YouTube
Channel: Business Insider
[7]
Narrator: With Tesla's stronghold
[8]
on the electric-car market
and multiple legacy automakers
[11]
already taking a crack at the segment,
[13]
it's hard for small
companies to make much noise.
[16]
However, one particular American start-up
[19]
seems to be on its way to
becoming a household name
[21]
when it comes to electric vehicles.
[23]
Rivian is an electrical-vehicle start-up
[25]
that was founded in 2009
[27]
and plans to start
producing its two vehicles,
[29]
the R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck, in 2020.
[34]
Rivian was recently thrust
into the global spotlight
[38]
when Ford invested $500
million into the company.
[42]
The unexpected partnership
happened only shortly
[44]
after Amazon made its own
investment of $700 million.
[48]
So what is it about Rivian
[50]
that has major investors
dying to get a piece
[53]
and publications likes Forbes
[54]
calling them Tesla's worst nightmare?
[64]
- I knew very little about
Rivian prior to Rivian's CEO,
[68]
this guy named R.J.
Scaringe, coming to visit us
[71]
here at Business Insider.
[72]
You know, what they came in to talk to us
[73]
about was how they were pivoting
[75]
from building an electric
vehicle of some sort
[77]
to focusing on electric vehicles
for the high-performance,
[82]
outdoor, off-road, adventure market.
[85]
Narrator: So what made Rivian choose
[87]
to place its entire focus
on such a niche market?
[90]
To learn more, we caught up
[91]
with the company's body
engineer, Brian Gase,
[94]
at Overland Expo, a biyearly event
[97]
that showcases popular adventure vehicles.
[99]
- I think the answer, part of
it is obvious on the surface.
[102]
You know, it's a white space.
[103]
There's nothing out there.
[104]
We're here at Overland,
[105]
and we're the first electric
vehicle ever to be here.
[108]
We're the first
[108]
electric adventure vehicle in existence.
[111]
And I think when you look
at some of those things,
[112]
it's a really exciting place for us,
[114]
but the reality is, it's core to our DNA.
[116]
It's core to who we are.
[118]
- So what Tesla did
when they hit the scene
[121]
with the original Roadster,
[122]
which was a high-performance
sports car, that's been done.
[125]
And the market now, you
know, the vehicle market,
[127]
broadly wants SUVs and pickup trucks.
[129]
So what Rivian's done
[131]
that's fairly genius here is they've said,
[134]
"Our angle is gonna be
[135]
that we're gonna sell a pickup and an SUV
[137]
that have great off-road performance,
[139]
high-performance generally."
[140]
They're still gonna have
the versatility of a pickup,
[142]
and still gonna have the
versatility of an SUV,
[144]
and they're probably
gonna be able to charge
[145]
a lot of money for it.
[147]
- So they're very similar in performance.
[149]
Spec-wise, we've got air suspension.
[152]
We've got up to 14.5
inches of ground clearance.
[155]
But the big thing you want to hear about
[156]
is the four electric motors,
[158]
the all-time all-wheel drive,
[160]
the 750 horsepower, 400-mile range,
[163]
three seconds 0 to 60 vehicle
[165]
that can go up a 45% grade,
[167]
tow 10,000 pounds, and go
through 3 feet of water.
[171]
Narrator: However, there are a number
[172]
of young electric automakers
[174]
with plans to produce
battery-powered utility vehicles.
[177]
How is Rivian standing up to
the traditional car industry
[179]
that's making so much noise?
[181]
They're not.
[184]
- So Tesla for its entire history
[186]
has sort of flipped the bird
[188]
to the traditional auto industry and said,
[190]
"We're gonna do things our way.
[191]
We're a Silicon Valley company.
[193]
We're a tech company.
[194]
We're not a car company. We're
a tech company, and we're
[197]
gonna do things the way that
tech companies do stuff."
[199]
Whereas what RJ and Rivian have done,
[202]
what they've decided to
do, is cozy up to Detroit.
[205]
Get close to the
traditional auto industry.
[207]
Sort of model themselves
after a big car company,
[210]
even though they're not
a big car company yet.
[212]
They're not gonna disrupt
the traditional industry.
[215]
They're gonna be more like
the traditional industry.
[217]
They're gonna use a factory in
Illinois that they purchased
[220]
from a traditional automaker, Mitsubishi.
[222]
They're gonna pair up with Ford.
[224]
They might pair up with other automakers.
[226]
I wouldn't rule that out.
[227]
They showed their pickup truck
[229]
and their SUV at the LA Auto Show.
[232]
It was a big reveal, and they did it
[234]
like a big car company
would do their reveal.
[236]
Narrator: Those only just hearing
[238]
about this ambitious company
would be surprised to know
[240]
that Rivian has been around
for more than a decade,
[243]
quietly developing its product
[244]
and acquiring sufficient financing.
[246]
So why the lack of effort
[248]
to generate hype like other start-ups
[250]
and instead choosing to
work behind the scenes?
[252]
- Our philosophy is, always, always,
[255]
always underpromise and overdeliver.
[257]
We want to tell you that
we're gonna do something.
[260]
We want you excited about it,
[261]
and then we want to just blow you away
[262]
with what we actually did.
[264]
- Part of the reason why
they were quiet for so long
[267]
was that they were working on their ideas
[270]
and their vehicles very incrementally.
[272]
Starting to unveil their vehicles
[273]
towards the end of last year,
[275]
about two years before they
want to start production
[279]
might be decent timing
because on the one hand,
[282]
it gives you enough time to build interest
[285]
and get preorders and get
some deposits from customers
[288]
before you actually start production.
[290]
But it's not so much
time that it's gonna seem
[294]
like you overpromised or underdelivered,
[297]
or, you know, you're
gonna lose all that hype
[300]
by the time these cars
actually come around.
[302]
Narrator: So Rivian has secured
[303]
over a billion dollars in investments,
[306]
partnered with major brands,
[308]
modeled themselves after
successful legacy automakers,
[311]
and created two products that
have captured the interests
[314]
of adventure enthusiasts
and EV lovers alike.
[317]
Now for the real question:
[319]
Should electric automakers
like Tesla be nervous?
[322]
- Rivian is probably a
"threat to Tesla" in the sense
[325]
that they're gonna steal some bandwidth
[327]
from people who are obsessed
with electric vehicles.
[330]
You know, so we won't just
be talking about Tesla
[332]
and Tesla's electric pickup truck,
[333]
we'll be talking about Rivian
[334]
and Rivian's electric pickup truck.
[336]
So Rivian gets the free press
[338]
as opposed to Elon getting
all the free press.
[340]
So they're not really a threat,
[342]
but it's an extremely encouraging sign.
[345]
I mean, you want to see companies
[347]
that have that Tesla thing
show up in the marketplace.
[351]
You don't want to have a
whole bunch of start-ups
[352]
that just don't have
really anything going on
[354]
as far as their overall master plan goes.
[358]
So to have another company come in
[360]
and attract this level of buzz, you know,
[363]
if you were threatened by this,
you'd be out of your mind.
[365]
You want this. You want to
have really viable companies
[369]
that can get it done, coming in
[371]
and growing the electric-vehicle market.
[373]
Rivian is starting to
vacuum up some funding
[376]
that's out there. Now, obviously
[377]
Rivian's not a public company.
[379]
Rivian's still at the kind
of start-up investment stage,
[381]
even though it's been around for a while,
[383]
but it is starting to rake
in some serious bucks.
