So last semester, when I was teaching Job聽
Application Documents, I had a student who聽聽
[25]
had served in the Korean military--and聽
he had done well in the Korean military,聽聽
[31]
he had advanced in rank, he had a position of聽
responsibility, and stuff like this--and so as聽聽
[38]
a line on the resume it was potentially a pretty聽
impressive line because it showed a lot of good聽聽
[44]
stuff: leadership, ability to follow orders,聽
ability to work with others, management skills,聽聽
[51]
and communication skills, etc., etc. So there was聽
a good argument for putting it on the resume and聽聽
[60]
applying for a job with US companies. But there聽
was a couple of potential concerns that we had,聽聽
[70]
we discussed pretty extensively. In addition聽
to all of the potentially good stuff that that聽聽
[81]
entry would tell potential employers, it also聽
tells them a couple of things that you might聽聽
[88]
want to be cautious about. One being that this聽
applicant is a Korean national. And that may or聽聽
[100]
may not make a difference, but nationality is聽
a protected identity category and employers...聽聽

and so there's potential discrimination concerns聽
if they don't hire you, and I mean... and it's聽聽
[118]
entirely possible that you will actually have聽
someone reading your resume who's gonna say,聽聽

"I don't want Koreans working here" or whatever聽
it is, but I suspect that's probably somewhat聽聽

less of a concern (that may be overly optimistic聽
of me). But the other thing, the other aspect of聽聽
[142]
this student's identity that that line on聽
the resume revealed is that he's a veteran,聽聽
[148]
which is also a protected category. And聽
so you don't necessarily need to avoid聽聽
[156]
any references that tell an employer about your聽
demographic identity or demographic categories,聽聽
[166]
but you want to be cautious about that because聽
those are the... really the reason that they聽聽
[175]
are protected categories is because these聽
are things that people have have used as a聽聽
[182]
basis for discrimination. So you want to avoid聽
that. You want to be judged on your own merits,聽聽
[189]
I think, or most applicants do anyway. You聽
also don't necessarily want to put your聽聽
[194]
potential employer in a position where they're聽
concerned that you could then sue them and say,聽聽
[204]
"you didn't hire me because I'm a Korean," or聽
"because I'm a veteran," "because I'm a woman,"聽聽
[209]
or "I'm Jewish," or "I'm whatever it is." So you聽
want to be strategic about those decisions. You聽聽
[217]
want to think critically about what the references聽
on your resume and application letter imply for聽聽
