10 Settlement Building Tips that Make Your Life Easier - YouTube
Channel: Oxhorn
[0]
Hello there ladies and gentlemen, this is Oxhorn
[2]
and I'm here in Tenpines Bluff today,
[5]
which is a new settlement I'm working on --
[7]
at least we're visiting, anyway --
[9]
to go over some of the major tips
[11]
that I use when building settlements.
[14]
I often get requests from people saying
[16]
"Hey, could you give me any top 10 tips
[19]
on what you do to build your settlements?"
[21]
And so, sure, here you go, here's some tips.
[23]
For these tips and tricks, you do not need mods --
[25]
this is a mods-free video,
[27]
so these should work for any player
[29]
even if you're on consoles or not using mods.
[31]
First on the list is: scrap the weapons
[34]
that you get from your Raider attacks.
[37]
Seems pretty obvious, but when you get attacked
[39]
by Raiders and Super Mutants and Gunners
[41]
they drop a lot of weapons.
[43]
And if you don't loot the weapons off of
[46]
their bodies, then the weapons disappear forever.
[48]
So you have two choices, you can:
[50]
A) either loot all of the weapons
[52]
and give them to all of your settlers, or
[54]
B) scrap them.
[56]
Now what I've done in the past is,
[58]
I've looted all the weapons
[59]
and then placed them in my workshop.
[61]
Check this out -- I've got all of these weapons
[63]
that came from a variety of different attacks
[66]
and I put them in here because
[69]
settlers will walk by and arm themselves
[72]
during attacks, using these weapons.
[75]
That way I don't have to actually go through
[77]
their inventory and give them
[79]
a whole bunch of weapons.
[81]
But, let's say you're short on resources.
[85]
Just drop all your weapons, open up the workshop,
[89]
and start scrapping away.
[92]
You're going to get some stuff that you
[93]
don't typically use for settlement building,
[95]
like nuclear material and fiber optics,
[98]
but you also get steel and wood, and
[101]
sometimes you'll need those for the
[104]
settlements that you are building.
[105]
So, you get attacked a lot -- at least I get
[108]
attacked a whole lot in my settlements --
[109]
which means that you have a nearly
[111]
unlimited supply of weapons.
[113]
Make sure that you scrap them for resources.
[116]
Next up, get rank 4 of Strong Back.
[119]
I already have it so let's go back a rank
[121]
so that you can read it, but it says:
[123]
"When overencumbered, you can fast travel."
[126]
This is really important and you need to be level 30
[129]
before you can get it, but it helps immensely
[131]
with dungeon runs -- when going through
[133]
dungeons to get scrap.
[135]
Instead of storing stuff in containers
[137]
or making multiple trips back and forth,
[140]
just get the fourth rank of Strong Back,
[143]
load up until you're completely encumbered,
[145]
and then fast travel to your settlement
[147]
to deposit all of your materials.
[149]
It makes your life as a settlement builder
[152]
a whole lot easier.
[154]
The next tip is to scrap items that you've already built
[157]
that you know you'll never use,
[159]
so when you build something and you decide
[161]
you no longer need it, what you do is
[163]
you go to the item and you typically go Tab
[166]
to store the item in your workshop.
[169]
And that's fine -- it saves the item in your
[170]
workshop so that you can use it later,
[172]
but let's say you've finished your settlement
[174]
and you know you'll never need those items again.
[176]
Instead of storing them in your workshop
[179]
where they are not put to good use,
[181]
scrap them to retain the resources.
[184]
This is important because when you store
[186]
a settlement object in your workshop,
[189]
it only exists at that workshop.
[192]
It's not like you're going to be able to
[193]
use it again at some other settlement.
[195]
So unless you're completely rebuilding
[197]
that one settlement again,
[198]
the item is no longer useful to you.
[200]
So what I do is I just go through my
[202]
settlement build menu and I looked for the numbers.
[204]
This is telling me that I have one of these shack floors
[207]
and I no longer need it, so I'm going to
[208]
build it and scrap it.
[210]
There's another shack floor; let's build that, scrap that.
[213]
Any more floors? No, let's go to walls.
[215]
Let's go through the walls.
[217]
How many walls do I got here?
[218]
I probably built some of these walls...
[220]
Yeah, two of these. 1... 2...
[224]
Oh, it looks like i accidentally built one.
[226]
But let's regain some of those resources
[228]
that otherwise were just sitting there not being used.
[231]
You get the idea.
[233]
After you finish your settlement --
[234]
look at these, I've got eight of these --
[236]
just go through one item at a time and
[239]
scrap the stuff you never use to regain your resources.
[244]
The next step may be obvious,
[245]
but use a jetpack, ladies and gentlemen.
[248]
Using the jetpack makes settlement building
[251]
so much easier.
[253]
If you don't use a jetpack then you end up
[255]
building these big intricate contraptions
[258]
and scaffolding, trying to
[260]
get up into the high places.
[261]
Or you'll use a mod to make things hover in the air,
[265]
and all of that is fine and it works,
[266]
and I do all of that, often, in my settlement builds,
[269]
but I just can't imagine
[271]
settlement building without a jetpack.
[273]
It allows me to access all of the hard-to-reach
[276]
places in my settlement that I otherwise
[278]
would struggle to get done and it just
[280]
makes my life so much easier.
[283]
So make sure you get to the level where you can
[285]
put a jetpack on your power armor,
[287]
get a jetpack, and craft away.
[290]
Alright, let's say that you're trying to build
[292]
an elevated platform, and you want to use
[295]
these posts that came with Far Harbor
[298]
or Contraptions Workshop to make it look
[302]
like it's secured to the ground.
[304]
So you try and get under it and you line it up
[307]
just perfectly and you place that there
[310]
then you place that one there and then
[311]
you go, "oh man, I didn't line it up right"
[315]
or you place one on top and you're like,
[316]
"oh shoot, it's going through the floor; what's going on?"
[319]
Well, the best way to go about this in my opinion
[322]
is to not build from the bottom up, but to
[325]
build from the top down.
[328]
Not only is this going to make it easier but
[333]
you're not going to overshoot your platform
[334]
if there is any excess.
[336]
It's going to go underneath the ground;
[338]
it's going to get buried in the earth.
[340]
This way, it has a much more clean look to it;
[344]
it looks much more convincing.
[346]
Here's one that I thought was common knowledge,
[349]
but I actually had a viewer say
[351]
that they had no idea you could do this.
[353]
You can move anything that's connected to
[355]
something else by simply hovering over an item,
[358]
holding E... boom! That selects absolutely everything.
[363]
I can now move this entire marketplace around,
[367]
if i want to.
[368]
Now, as you can see there's part of this
[370]
that I don't want to be selected.
[372]
So to cancel this, let's press Tab.
[375]
Everything goes back the way it was.
[378]
And notice that when I did this the last time,
[380]
I got this power pylon selected.
[382]
But let's say I didn't want to have that selected.
[385]
Well, it's really simple. Let's just move this
[387]
out of the way -- move it a bit farther away,
[390]
and then when we try to select
[391]
absolutely everything again, we no longer have
[395]
the pylon / conduits selected.
[397]
We now only have the marketplace selected.
[400]
Now, this is going to be much more useful if
[402]
you use a tool like "Place Everywhere"
[405]
because then you can push it outside of
[406]
the bounds of the zone, or you can push it
[409]
farther ahead of you, and stuff like that.
[411]
But it's still a really useful feature,
[413]
even if you're doing this on consoles
[414]
or if you're not playing with mods.
[417]
So if you want to select everything, hold E to do so.
[421]
Now some of these chairs and beds in the game
[426]
don't have backs, and so it's hard to know
[429]
which side is the front and which side is the back.
[432]
This can be important if you're trying
[434]
to post something on the ground
[436]
that a settler is going to use, like a chair for example.
[439]
You want to make sure that they sit the right way.
[441]
Well, here's a tip.
[443]
In the past I would look for an identifying mark
[447]
on the chair, that would show me where the back was.
[449]
In the case of this stool, that line is the back of the chair.
[453]
So I would make sure to point the line
[455]
always towards myself when placing it,
[458]
so that I knew where the back of my settler would be.
[460]
But if I were to use something that makes
[462]
logical sense to me, like the line on the back of this,
[465]
to be the back of the stool, I would be fooling myself.
[468]
Because the line at the back of this stool
[471]
is not the back of it. Settlers don't sit on it like that.
[474]
See, in this example, that line in the back
[477]
is not the very back of this settler.
[480]
So if I were to use that to line this up,
[483]
I would be incorrect.
[485]
So the best way to go about this is to find something
[488]
that has a back, like this stool with a back, right?
[493]
We know where the settler is going to sit in this stool
[496]
every single time because it has a back.
[498]
But the nice thing about the settlement build menu
[500]
is that the items retain the shape.
[503]
So here I am with the back pointing towards me,
[506]
and I move one over, and I'm going to be confident
[509]
that if I set that down right there,
[511]
the settler will sit in the stool with her back towards me.
[515]
Alright, let's wait to see if a settler sits down.
[518]
I think she's going to take it.
[521]
And there we go, yep, so she's sitting the correct way
[525]
that we were able to predict
[526]
simply by taking a look at something else
[529]
that was in the building menu.
[530]
And this works for beds as well.
[532]
So let's take a look at some of these beds.
[534]
Uhh, which way is up?
[536]
Which way would the settler sleep?
[538]
There's really no indication. Is one side
[541]
slightly taller than the other side?
[543]
It's kind of hard to tell, especially with a bed like this.
[546]
Which side is up and which side is down?
[549]
Well, this comes in handy when we have a bed like this,
[552]
or actually, no -- a bed like the one that
[555]
comes with Vault-Tec Workshop.
[557]
This. This bed comes with Vault-Tec Workshop,
[559]
and it's hard to see when it's highlighted,
[561]
but you can see that one end of it is slightly uncovered.
[565]
That's where the settler will put his or her head.
[569]
So if we want the head to go on the right side like this,
[572]
let's just position the bed
[575]
and then we can go and find any bed
[577]
that we want to place -- like, a sleeping bag,
[579]
or a cage bed, or... even one of these dirty beds,
[587]
and we can be confident that
[590]
all of the heads will line up. Right? Simple.
[594]
Alright, so you've got a crop planter down here
[596]
that came with Wasteland Workshop,
[598]
and you want to make a nice square dice-face
[601]
grid of carrots, but you try to put this
[603]
carrot down here and you can't seem to
[606]
find that sweet spot.
[607]
It's just so hard to get to and you just can't place it.
[611]
It's saying that the planter is full.
[613]
Well, this is a really simple workaround.
[615]
Plant the carrot anywhere else.
[619]
Once it's planted, go back and select it,
[623]
and you can plant it in the planter.
[626]
It's much more lenient that way and I don't know why.
[629]
And we can just keep doing this.
[630]
Let's plant another crop.
[632]
Even though this is pretty much full, we can plant
[636]
two carrots really close to each other.
[639]
They no longer detect each other's
[641]
being next to each other.
[642]
I think this is due to a glitch.
[644]
I think the carrot is still technically over here.
[646]
You see, I hover over that... yeah.
[649]
I hover over this invisible spot and the carrot lights up
[652]
because I believe the game is still
[654]
technically placing it here, but
[657]
visually it's going to be here.
[659]
So this is a great way to go about it, and then
[661]
you can just move this anywhere you want. Bingo.
[665]
Alright, has this ever happened to you?
[666]
You're wiring up electricity, or you're changing
[669]
something that has already been wired,
[672]
and your wires get all messed up.
[674]
They start pointing to the wrong things,
[676]
or worse yet, they start doing this spike animation
[680]
and it never stops --
[682]
like that, that sparkle animation right there.
[684]
It just never stops and you want
[686]
to figure out how to fix that.
[687]
Well, there's a really simple way to do it.
[689]
You don't have to scrap each of these wires and
[691]
rewire it -- that's just a waste of time.
[694]
Instead, just select one of the wires,
[697]
and then cancel by pressing Tab.
[700]
And it snaps back to the original position.
[703]
If you have a lot of wires attached to
[704]
something like this, simply grab the
[706]
thing that the wires have been attached to
[710]
and then press Tab to cancel.
[712]
And they all snap back exactly where
[714]
they're supposed to go.
[716]
That should save you a lot of time.
[718]
Here's one that plagues settlements.
[720]
So each settler can produce 6 food.
[725]
Now, that means they can farm more than six crops.
[728]
You see how this carrot is only producing 0.5 food?
[732]
That means that when it comes to carrots,
[734]
each settler can farm 12 carrots.
[737]
When it comes to mutfruit, each settler
[739]
can only farm six mutfruit because
[742]
each mutfruit produces 1 food.
[745]
The problem comes into play when your
[747]
settlement starts to grow.
[748]
So let's say you've got four settlers
[751]
and one settler assigned to farming.
[753]
So you plant four mutfruit or eight carrots
[757]
to produce 4 food.
[759]
Well, when you first assign one of your settlers
[762]
to farming, that settler only farms 4 food.
[767]
Right? Because you only have 4 food planted.
[770]
But then your settlement starts to grow,
[772]
and suddenly you need more food.
[773]
So you know that your settler can farm a total of 6 food,
[777]
so you plant 2 more food,
[779]
but your settler does not start farming automatically.
[782]
That's because the way the game works is
[785]
it triggers an auto-assign process
[788]
when you assign a settler to an object
[790]
for the first time.
[791]
So when you assign a settler to a crop, it will
[794]
automatically try to detect other crops nearby to
[797]
assign that settler to, until it reaches maximum 6 food.
[802]
If there are only four carrots there,
[804]
then it stops doing that.
[805]
But when you plant more carrots, the game
[808]
doesn't go through that auto-assigning process again.
[811]
Instead what you got to do is,
[812]
when you plant more crops, you have to
[814]
find the settler that has already been assigned
[816]
to farming, and reassign that settler to farming.
[820]
Watch what happens when I reassign a settler to farming.
[823]
Look at my food in the top left hand corner.
[825]
You see it go down?
[827]
The game is unassigning all of the food
[829]
from that settler, and then it's going through each
[831]
food item, one at a time -- one, two, three, four,
[834]
and assigning it to that settler
[837]
until all of them are assigned.
[839]
So, to summarize this tip, if you have enough
[843]
food planted, and you have enough
[845]
settlers farming, but your food still is in the red --
[848]
it still says you don't have enough food --
[851]
just take one of your settlers, maybe hover over them
[854]
to see which crops they're assigned to,
[856]
find the one that is assigned to the fewest,
[858]
and reassign that settler to some crops.
[862]
The game will reset itself and you should be good to go.
[865]
Well, there you have it, ladies and gentlemen --
