[3]
Hey lady, don't you think that聽 bike's a little big for you?聽
[18]
Welcome to MOTOTREK I'm Cassie Maier,聽聽
[20]
professional motorcycle聽 instructor with West38Moto.聽
[25]
I'm a petite rider and I operate one of the聽 heaviest adventure motorcycles on the market.聽聽
[30]
I prefer not to wrangle this 555 pounds motorcycle聽 so I've learned to work smarter and not harder
[45]
one of the ways that I conserve energy is by using聽 a variety of mounting and dismounting techniques.聽聽
[52]
learning these techniques can really help with聽 your endurance while adventure riding. let's start聽聽
[57]
with what i call a "Standard Mount". most people聽 are typically going to park their bike in this聽聽
[62]
fashion which is where the wheel is turned to the聽 same direction that the kickstand is on there's聽聽
[67]
nothing wrong with having it this way but i prefer聽 twisting the handlebars pointing the wheel away聽聽
[73]
from the kickstand it opens up all of this space聽 and it brings this front brake a lot closer to me聽聽
[80]
making mounting the motorcycle a lot more simple聽 all i do is grab that front brake and swing over聽聽
[87]
you can certainly dismount from the same side that聽 you mounted it from or you can actually exit the聽聽
[93]
motorcycle on the right side now we don't have a聽 kickstand on the right side so we have to approach聽聽
[98]
this a little bit differently the handlebar聽 technique is going to be the same if i want to go聽聽
[104]
this way i need to open this up allow that big聽 open space once more slide over i want to have聽聽
[112]
my hand on this front brake just in case you can聽 either press on the motorcycle here you can grab聽聽
[118]
your guards i usually prefer down here and what聽 this does is it pushes that motorcycle back into聽聽
[125]
that kickstand to ensure it doesn't go anywhere聽 if you want to mount the motorcycle from the聽聽
[130]
right side you're going to grab that front brake聽 press the bike a little bit into that kickstand聽聽
[136]
and swing a leg over being off-road you聽 never know what you're going to run into聽聽
[147]
so knowing how to do that both dismounting聽 and remounting from that side is important聽聽
[154]
now if you ever go out and you end up on聽 pavement or where there's a lot of traffic聽聽
[158]
this is also the side that a lot of police聽 officers will mount or dismount from聽聽
[162]
because traffic's whizzing on this side it's聽 a lot safer over here the cowboy mount is a聽聽
[167]
technique that allows us to mount the motorcycle聽 closer to it reducing any leg swing it also puts聽聽
[173]
us higher on the motorcycle allowing our聽 legs to get over the luggage more easily聽聽
[178]
you're going to pull on the handlebars put your聽 left foot on the left peg engage that front brake聽聽
[185]
and place your right foot on the right peg if聽 you can't mount the motorcycle from the left side聽聽
[191]
and you've got too much luggage to allow a leg聽 swing you can cowboy mount from this side too聽聽
[197]
you're going to put your right foot on the聽 right peg you're going to put as much weight聽聽
[201]
as you can over the side stand to ensure the bike聽 is stable swing your leg around and put it on the
[208]
peg聽聽
[227]
this bike is really heavy and it's leaned a聽 lot on this side stand with my leverage i'm聽聽
[234]
not going to be able to upright the motorcycle聽 in this way instead with both feet on the ground聽聽
[240]
i can use my body's leverage to upright the聽 motorcycle fold in the side stand this is聽聽
[248]
where this mount becomes a little bit more聽 challenging the bike has to be balanced and聽聽
[252]
you have to be balanced what you're looking for in聽 the motorcycle is for it to feel soft if it leans聽聽
[258]
too far one way or the other it becomes heavy you聽 want to find that perfect zone come up close to聽聽
[265]
the motorcycle and actually turn the handlebars聽 again you're opening up all of this space and聽聽
[272]
it allows the bike to lean into you just a little聽 bit so now that you and the bike can work together聽聽
[277]
stand up on one foot throw that leg over and聽 immediately bring that foot to the peg in order聽聽
[285]
to find the balance in your motorcycle let the聽 bike be up on two wheels and start to move around聽聽
[292]
it making sure to put your hands in places where聽 it's nice and firm not on anything that can move
[300]
i like to let the bike tip to one side or the聽 other when i get usually to the back side of it聽聽
[307]
it'll end up getting really聽 heavy I'm trying to find聽聽
[311]
that perfect soft spot here I'm hardly doing any聽 work but when i let it drop then i have to work
[322]
you can travel around the聽 whole motorcycle this way
[327]
it helps you become a little bit more acquainted
[345]
and this will help you find聽 that balance when you're聽聽
[348]
mounting the motorcycle without a side stand
[359]
with a lot of practice you can actually learn to聽 mount and dismount the motorcycle while it's in聽聽
[364]
motion the reason that I like using the rolling聽 mount and dismount is it conserves a lot of聽聽
[371]
energy for me I'm only 5'4 and i have a 27 inch聽 inseam getting this bike up takes a lot of work聽聽
[380]
i don't always have enough leverage to get the聽 bike up when i have a leg over one side of it聽聽
[387]
this isn't gonna work so rather i can just聽 bump the bike up with both feet on one side聽聽
[393]
put a foot on the peg and ride away聽 and that requires a lot less work
[405]
with the motorcycle uprighted and the side stand聽聽
[408]
in stand next to the motorcycle using your hip to聽 balance it bring your left foot to the left peg
[420]
look in the direction you want聽 to be going engage that clutch聽聽
[423]
and start the engine if it's not already聽 in first gear go ahead and put it there聽聽
[428]
use delicate and deliberate input on both the聽 clutch and the throttle to slowly start moving聽聽
[434]
forward as soon as the bike starts moving聽 you have to commit and pull that foot off聽聽
[438]
the ground if you drag it behind you you're going聽 to lose your balance have to stop and start again
[454]
once you're standing up and the bike is聽 in motion fine tune your balance again聽聽
[459]
throw your leg over and put your foot on the peg
[477]
the rolling dismount technique is聽 the rolling mount in reverse once聽聽
[482]
you're a few bike lengths away from聽 where you've decided you want to stop聽聽
[485]
you're going to pull in the clutch at the same聽 time swinging your leg over apply delicate聽聽
[491]
pressure to the front brake as soon as you come聽 to a complete stop you bring your foot down
[498]
to learn these techniques it takes a lot of聽 practice there's no getting around it you just聽聽
[503]
you have to put in the time you're going to have聽 days where you drop the bike and you drop the bike聽聽
[508]
a lot especially in the things that are going聽 to require a lot of balance you just have聽聽
[513]
to go through it i dropped my bike a thousand聽 times trying to learn some of these techniques聽聽
[522]
if you really want it continue to be聽 persistent practice practice practice聽聽
[528]
you're gonna get it it's just聽 you gotta get there first
[537]
regardless of what kind of rider you are you can聽 always conserve energy using these mounting and聽聽
[542]
dismounting techniques give a few of them a聽 try and find the ones that work best for you
