Rep. Jeffries: 'Missing' McConnell Acts Like Trump 'Subsidiary' | The Beat With Ari Melber | MSNBC - YouTube

[0]
tonight Nancy Pelosi making it plain
[2]
with a big power play and telling Trump
[4]
this is my house the new Speaker
[7]
basically put Donald Trump on notice he
[9]
will have to she says reschedule the
[11]
entire televised State of the Union in
[13]
the house because of this shutdown this
[15]
is she says because of security but
[17]
everyone gets the larger message we've
[21]
never really had a State of the Union
[24]
when government has been shut down since
[27]
the budget act in the 70s this isn't
[30]
requires hundreds of people working on
[33]
the logistics and the security of it
[35]
most of those people are either
[37]
furloughed or victims of the shutdown
[40]
the president the shutdown could make it
[42]
from the oval office of him Nancy Pelosi
[46]
mixing basically concern for workers
[49]
which many people say is legitimate her
[51]
career reflects it with yes a little bit
[54]
of shade he can make it from the oval
[56]
office meanwhile the Post reporting
[57]
Trump has flashes of quote frustration
[60]
over this his inability to get Democrats
[62]
to buckle has caught up with him and now
[64]
his own economists doubling projections
[66]
of how much damage the Trump shut down
[69]
he promised to take ownership for it
[71]
would cause the economy warning we might
[73]
be headed towards a quote contraction
[75]
day 26 of this shutdown this pain though
[78]
is very real beyond the political
[79]
gamesmanship and the back-and-forth
[82]
think about how federal workers and
[84]
their families are feeling across the
[85]
country we need to pay our bills now so
[89]
we need to get back to work and start
[91]
getting paid again I feel a pressure
[94]
I've never felt before in my life I will
[96]
be able to weather the storm but I know
[97]
a lot of people that won't be able to
[99]
weather the storm if people could just
[100]
take the five minutes to reach out and
[103]
call their congressmen call their
[104]
senator today I was only able to get two
[112]
paychecks before this happened
[113]
we got mortgages we have red tape and we
[115]
got children to feed
[116]
so please mr. president open up the
[119]
government this is real another
[121]
furloughed worker telling MSNBC's Katy
[123]
tur about the effect on her children
[127]
both boys are on the spectrum and my
[130]
little guy has multiple disabilities
[132]
we're not having any expensive therapies
[137]
for the moment because we simply can't
[140]
afford them and keep food on the table
[142]
my youngest son has more seizures with
[146]
more stress and he's starting to show
[148]
signs of more stress we can only shelter
[151]
them so much when we're struggling day
[155]
to day to figure out how to cover the
[157]
next upcoming bill one story among many
[160]
let's bring back Michael Steele we're
[161]
joined by Daniella Gibbs ledger from the
[163]
Center for American Progress and a
[164]
former Obama administration official
[166]
good to see you both let me start like
[170]
this Danielle
[171]
Speaker Pelosi is taking a serious
[173]
problem which has been discussed in many
[175]
ways over these weeks and turning it
[177]
into a very clear message to the
[180]
president you don't get your televised
[182]
address if you don't do your homework
[183]
exactly you know the guy he has one job
[186]
and that is to run this country I know
[189]
he doesn't like he doesn't like being
[191]
president he likes the trappings but
[192]
clearly he doesn't like doing the
[193]
day-to-day work all he has to do is open
[195]
the government and they can have a
[197]
conversation about his wall they can
[199]
have a conversation about a whole myriad
[201]
of things but he has to do his job
[204]
people are hurting and Nancy Pelosi like
[207]
she is compassionate as he said her
[209]
career shows that she cares about people
[211]
but she is very smart politically and
[213]
she knows that the onus is on him to
[215]
rectify the situation there was a bill
[217]
that was passed unanimously
[219]
bipartisanship in the Senate so he just
[222]
has to say okay I will sign this it's up
[224]
to him when he wants to happen here and
[226]
it seems like unlike say what we were
[228]
just discussing on a very different
[229]
topic in the top of the show here the
[231]
facts are mattering because the public
[233]
is far more against Trump on this than
[237]
on other trumpian issues and some of
[239]
what they've said I mean Kevin
[240]
acet may have one of the the worst
[243]
statements defending the shut down we've
[245]
heard and that's saying something out of
[247]
this crew but take a listen to Kevin
[248]
Hassett defending it for truck so then
[252]
they have the vacation but they don't
[255]
have to use their vacation days and then
[257]
they come back and then they get their
[259]
back pay then they're in some sense
[260]
they're better off in some sense they're
[263]
better off so let's be clear Kevin when
[266]
people go on vacation they usually don't
[269]
file for unemployment and that's what's
[272]
happening you have a significant number
[275]
of Americans more and more filing for
[277]
unemployment because they need something
[279]
to come into their household and the
[281]
typical unemployment check right is is a
[284]
percentage of your normal check for the
[288]
month so they'll take a percentage of
[290]
like out of the two pay periods you'll
[292]
get one pay period and percentage of
[294]
that that's it for the month so it's not
[296]
like you're getting teawrex you're a
[297]
Republican do you think it's working the
[299]
way Pelosi is flexing in terms of the
[303]
pressure that is putting in terms of
[304]
today making it about you don't get
[306]
you're saying yeah no sheep absolutely I
[308]
mean he's met his match I mean he
[309]
doesn't know what to do with this no
[313]
idea what to do with Nancy Pelosi that's
[315]
why he's sitting in there in the White
[316]
House frustrated now as she's not biting
[319]
on the kernels of crazy he's putting out
[322]
there now I'm being told for my control
[323]
room sometimes we have a lot of breaking
[325]
news right now we actually have a
[326]
breaking guest who we didn't know we're
[328]
gonna get it outside so both of you hang
[329]
with me but I'm told the congressman
[331]
Hakeem Jeffries has walked out of a late
[334]
scheduled meeting with Speaker Pelosi he
[335]
of course is part of leadership in the
[337]
House Democratic caucus
[338]
I didn't know if we were gonna get you
[339]
depending on your schedule tonight thank
[341]
you for joining I understand you just
[343]
came out of the the meeting with the
[344]
speaker so what is the latest well the
[349]
latest is our perspective remains clear
[351]
we need to reopen the government and
[353]
thereafter we can have a mature
[354]
conversation about border security a
[356]
mature conversation about our broken
[358]
immigration system a mature conversation
[360]
about comprehensive immigration reform
[363]
and
[363]
in a bipartisan way but we're not gonna
[366]
allow the American people and 800,000
[368]
public employees to be held hostage by
[371]
Donald Trump because he's decided to
[373]
throw a presidential temper tantrum and
[375]
try to extract 5 plus billion dollars
[378]
for his medieval border war and
[380]
congressman we just heard on our show
[382]
from some people who think Pelosi's got
[385]
the right attitude here going hard
[386]
against the president using the state of
[388]
the union as a new pressure point
[390]
tonight as you know there are some
[391]
Democrats in your caucus who said that
[393]
it would appear to be somewhat a breach
[397]
of protocol is the way some put it to
[399]
quote-unquote disinvite him did that
[401]
come up in the meeting you were just at
[402]
do you think she's got the right call
[404]
there I think she has the full support
[407]
of the caucus i presided over the
[409]
meeting this morning when she made the
[410]
announcement that she was going to take
[412]
this step and re as you understand based
[415]
on any legitimate reading of the letter
[417]
she expressed concern for the security
[420]
of everyone the Secret Service right now
[422]
is not being paid perhaps the largest
[425]
potentially significant event it's
[428]
Secret Service resides over is the State
[432]
of the Union where you have 435 members
[434]
of Congress 100 senators ambassadors
[436]
cabinet secretaries and of course the
[438]
President of the United States of
[440]
America and the vice president it makes
[441]
no sense in the midst of a government
[443]
shutdown to proceed a congressman
[446]
we've heard from the administration
[447]
trying to say that this isn't quote
[450]
unquote that bad that some workers may
[451]
be better off of course the impacts far
[454]
wider than workers I want to read to you
[455]
from reporting today on thousands of
[457]
lower-income Americans who do get these
[460]
federal assistance program payments and
[462]
noting that they've done has changed
[464]
it's only the shutdown that's changed a
[466]
property manager telling tenants quote
[468]
until the government opens again you're
[470]
responsible for all of your rental
[471]
amount meaning that some are effectively
[474]
facing pressure or potential eviction do
[477]
you view that as the fault of just
[479]
Donald Trump or of Donald Trump and
[481]
Mitch McConnell if the Senate won't even
[483]
vote on the things that that your house
[485]
is now passing well Donald Trump
[488]
certainly shoulders a lot of the blame
[489]
but Mitch McConnell
[491]
has been missing in action he's in the
[492]
witness protection program and we need
[494]
to figure out when he will emerge so we
[496]
can actually proceed not as a wholly
[499]
owned subsidiary of the Trump
[500]
administration which is how he's been
[502]
conducting himself but as a separate and
[504]
co-equal branch of government we've been
[506]
sending him
[506]
appropriation bill after appropriation
[509]
bill that the Senate themselves in a
[511]
bipartisan way led by Republicans have
[513]
passed over the last several months we
[516]
could understand in your analogy then is
[518]
he he's a subsidiary corporation or he's
[520]
a witness in protection or which is he
[523]
there's a lot of things that are going
[525]
on over in the Senate none of which have
[527]
been good for the American people
[529]
final question sir will Donald Trump in
[532]
the end in your view give a State of the
[535]
Union from the floor of the house well
[538]
let's hope that over the next few days
[539]
we can reopen the government and in that
[541]
context we look forward to hearing what
[544]
he has to say to the American people on
[546]
the floor of the House of
[546]
Representatives but if he continues down
[548]
this reckless path he will not be giving
[551]
a State of the Union on January 29th
[553]
from the floor of the House of
[554]
Representatives congressman Hakeem
[556]
Jeffries coming out of busy meetings
[557]
working late while I know some aren't
[560]
working so I want to thank you as well
[561]
as my guest Michael Steele and Daniella
[563]
Gibbs Leger thanks to each of you hey
