[0]
qyld we've talked a lot about this etf in the past聽 and today we're going to talk about this crazy 49聽聽
[4]
cents per share dividend paid down on january 7聽 2022. what does this mean for you what does this聽聽
[10]
mean for your taxes and then we're going to also聽 dive into what actually is qyld for those people聽聽
[15]
that might be a little bit new to this and not too聽 sure of what's going on because let's face it a 12聽聽
[20]
dividend yield can seem quite attractive but is聽 it worth it let's talk about first is 49 cents聽聽
[26]
now first things first if we hop over here to the聽 dividend tracker website by the way this is the聽聽
[31]
new website i'll be using to track my dividends聽 and you can check it out for yourself they have聽聽
[35]
both a free as well as a premium version linked聽 down below in the description but look forward聽聽
[39]
to more videos on this particular website in聽 the future but you can see right here payment聽聽
[43]
date one seven of four nine nine so let's do a聽 quick calculation on what's going on here now聽聽
[48]
i personally hold about 400-ish shares of qyld聽 that's what we want to plug in so think about if聽聽
[53]
you if you're invested in this how many shares聽 do you have put that number in right now into聽聽
[57]
your calculator so for me it's 466.1593 and then聽 multiply it by that .499 that is a total of 232.61聽聽
[68]
earned on january 7th that's pretty exciting聽 but the big difference here is this is not your聽聽
[73]
typical distribution let me take a step back in聽 time to show you what it typically is with qyld聽聽
[79]
if we go over here to their website and i'll link聽 this down below if you want to check it out but聽聽
[83]
you can see 2021 let's start off with november聽 this is the latest report that they offered for聽聽
[88]
19a and i click on it and i gotta zoom in because聽 that's kind of small okay so here we are you can聽聽
[94]
see this is what's going on for the average of聽 about a 22 per share dividend this is typically聽聽
[99]
what we get when we get these distributions but聽 net investment income that's a result of what they聽聽
[105]
do in this fund which is covered call writing聽 option strategies then return of capital of聽聽
[110]
21 cents 21.71 totaling 2246. that is typical of聽 what we see for our monthly distributions of qyld聽聽
[120]
if you want to learn more about return of capital聽 i talk about it in my tax video also linked above聽聽
[125]
in the info card as well as down below in the聽 description you can check out that video after聽聽
[128]
this one but what's most important here is this is聽 a difference this 49 cents is nothing to do with聽聽
[134]
net investment income it is nothing to do with聽 return of capital this is all short-term capital聽聽
[139]
gain so a short-term capital gain distribution聽 works just like this it's a payment made either聽聽
[145]
by a mutual fund or an exchange traded fund in聽 this case qild which represents a portion of聽聽
[150]
the proceeds from the funds sales of stocks and聽 other assets from its portfolio basically think聽聽
[156]
about it as the investors share the proceeds聽 from the funds transaction now that's not the聽聽
[160]
fund's overall profit this is just as a result of聽 them potentially selling some of the funds within聽聽
[165]
their holdings some of that activity that happens聽 does get passed along to the investor but in this聽聽
[171]
case it's called a short-term capital gain because聽 it was a fund or a transaction or something that聽聽
[175]
happened that was short-term meaning less than聽 the last year and that's why this is called a聽聽
[180]
short-term capital gain what this means is that it聽 is taxed as ordinary income so what you should do聽聽
[186]
is check with your cpa or your accountant and talk聽 a little bit about short-term capital gain as well聽聽
[190]
as ordinary income and how this could impact聽 you especially if you own a lot of shares and聽聽
[195]
got a huge distribution in this past month i think聽 somebody got well over like five thousand dollars聽聽
[201]
in the last month as a result of having so many聽 shares and this 49 cents per share distribution聽聽
[205]
that just launched big difference and you got聽 to make sure you're keeping your eye on the game聽聽
[210]
with these particular things when it comes聽 down to tax that does not mean that globalx聽聽
[214]
for qyld is going to start quarterly dividends or聽 quarterly distributions i should say this is more聽聽
[220]
this is the short-term capital gain that is at聽 the end of the year here it is great we're moving聽聽
[225]
on and we should see what we saw earlier in the聽 form of either return of capital or net investment聽聽
[230]
income for the rest of 2022 so expect that 18 to聽 22 cent per share distribution as we move forward聽聽
[237]
because you got to remember the goal of qyld right聽 here on their website check this out high income聽聽
[241]
potential and that's the goal of this particular聽 fund with monthly distributions and they've done聽聽
[245]
that for the last eight years running so they're聽 going to continue that on in 2022. now obviously聽聽
[251]
look right here and this is where a lot of people聽 get trapped up in qyld and i want to make this聽聽
[254]
point in today's video a lot of people say hey i聽 have a lot of money and i'm going to just put it聽聽
[259]
in the qrld because i like the idea that i could聽 make a lot of money every single month and you're聽聽
[264]
thinking about it in the form of i could make聽 enough money just with qyld to replace my job聽聽
[270]
income and then i could just live off of qild聽 it sounds sexy but it's not always what it seems聽聽
[277]
so a couple things could happen especially if聽 you're younger first of all look at this little聽聽
[281]
call it fine print at the end of this first聽 page covered call writing can limit the upside聽聽
[286]
potential of the underlying security what this聽 means this is the nasdaq 100 this is the index聽聽
[292]
that not only qyld is buying into but they write聽 covered call options writing strategies against聽聽
[298]
the thing with that is these are the top 100聽 non-financial companies comprised of the nasdaq聽聽
[304]
index what you're finding when you're doing this聽 activity is it's aimed at monthly distributions聽聽
[309]
it's aimed at income now if you're in retirement聽 this could be a good opportunity to look into聽聽
[314]
but if you're like 20 years old and you're putting聽 all your eggs into this basket i'd warn you about聽聽
[319]
that because there are opportunities with growth聽 i would rather look into a growth etf or a growth聽聽
[324]
stock or a growth mutual fund before i would dump聽 all my money into an income producing fund like聽聽
[329]
this one such as qqq that is one that tracks聽 the nasdaq 100 index but is focused primarily聽聽
[336]
on growth in fact if we go over to the portfolio聽 visualizer and we plug in a difference of a ten聽聽
[342]
thousand dollar investment between 2019 and 2022聽 and that 10 000 dollar investment will be invested聽聽
[348]
into qyld and qqq we're going to hit analyze聽 portfolio and as you can see here the difference聽聽
[356]
between qqq and qyld is quite significant my ten聽 thousand dollar balance if i put it all into qyld聽聽
[362]
only grows with dividends reinvested to 14聽 905 but look at qqq going up all the way to 26聽聽
[370]
277 that obviously leads you to believe聽 that that growth is much more important than聽聽
[375]
dividend distributions now i will tell you one聽 thing what i do with qyld the reason i have the聽聽
[380]
shares that i have is because i treat this as a聽 short-term cash reserve so for example let's say聽聽
[385]
a year from now or two years from now i want to聽 buy something or i'm i'm saving up for something聽聽
[390]
or maybe i want to have a secondary emergency fund聽 to my emergency fund well i'm going to put money聽聽
[394]
into qyld just to kind of keep it flatlined and聽 enjoy some extra distributions if i compare this聽聽
[400]
to a bank account where i can store this money聽 instead the bank account only pays me about聽聽
[405]
0.50 in interest i'd rather go and lean towards聽 something that's going to pay me distributions聽聽
[410]
as opposed to the bank account now of course聽 that's my own risk in my own decision this is聽聽
[415]
not financial advice to buy hold or sell qyld聽 or any investment but that's personally what聽聽
[419]
i'm doing the majority of my income though and the聽 majority of my investments are going toward things聽聽
[425]
that are growth even vti vtsax voo and things like聽 that those vanguard funds that are tracking either聽聽
[432]
the entire s p 500 or the entire stock market聽 and are poised for growth over the long period聽聽
[437]
that's where the bulk of my investments are going聽 but if i have some additional cash that i'm just聽聽
[441]
sitting around for a little period of time and at聽 short term within the next two years i might use聽聽
[444]
that money i'm gonna put it into something聽 like this qyld which tracks the nasdaq 100聽聽
[450]
ryld which tracks the russell 2000 or xyld that聽 tracks the s p 500 and they all write covered聽聽
[457]
call option strategies against those three indexes聽 so make sure you keep an eye on the qyld website聽聽
[462]
make sure you keep an eye on your tax bill and聽 really start thinking about your ordinary income聽聽
[467]
the short term capital gain of this 49 cents聽 and what this might mean for your tax bill聽聽
[472]
if you want to learn more about what's going聽 to happen in 2022 with the return of capital聽聽
[476]
and net investment income distributions of聽 qyld make sure you check out that tax video聽聽
[480]
right after this one i'll link it down below聽 in the description other than that if you聽聽
[484]
have any questions comment below check out this聽 video next and we'll see you on the next video
