Calculating percentages in Excel 2010, 2013, 2016 - YouTube

In this session I am going to cover how you calculate percentages in Excel.

So for example let's say that we have a thousand dollars

that we invested invested in

some kind of fund.

At the end of the year let's say we made twelve hundred

It's hard to make that much money anymore but that say we did

We are going to format this as accounting dollar amounts

Now in this area here

let's say we want to calculate the percentage. So we will format that as

percentage

the idea here it would be to take

number two

minus the number one

what's the statement

was at the end of the year

minus what you invested in the beginning of the year

divided

by what you invested in the beginning of the year

so it'll be basically

twelve hundred

minus one hundred

divided by

one thousand. Or twelve hundred minus one thousand divided by one thousand

So to express this in a formula it'll be equals sign

actually have to do this in parentheses

so numbers two

remember your basic math

minus

number one

close parenthesis

divided by

the first number

and then hit enter.

Notice we we had a twenty percent profit

Again the reason why give us a twenty percent was because i formatted it

first

with the percentage amount

that if we have four thousand

dollars

and at the end of the year

we have thirty eight hundred

and we want to find the the percentage here we could either do his manually again equal

open parentheses

number two minus

number one

close parenthesis, divide it

by the first number

and then hit enter

so we've lost five percent

or

with this simply use the autofill feature and use them

Notice it's giving us an error here on the third one that's because we don't

have any numbers here so if we had six thousand and then sixty five hundred

now notice

we made eight percent

so to format these vauesvalues and by the way the best way to learn about this

stuff is basically explore the program and see what it does and what the

features are

so that's a lot of format and the negative values in red here

you can select these cells

and then right-click and choose

format cells

Under format cells you have all kinds of options here

so you can choose under number

you can pick

how you want to represent the negative numbers So for example, the negative numbers you could represent

be represented in red

or

parenthesis here

see if i could say i want them in parentheses locate

you notice its coming as zero

the reason is because i don't have those decimal points so if I increase decimal

points

two of them the napa five percent

decrease

now the reason if u you know this because i think rich with the formatting

of the cells

you can only change them into percentages

you can select those and choose percent it will give you the percentage change

too
