The 1983 Burger King Headphones by Radio Shack - YouTube

Channel: LGR

[1]
My headphones are burgers.
[3]
[typing] [music]
[7]
It just amuses me to think that someone, somewhere,
[10]
got two Whoppers and just went–
[14]
Yeah.
[15]
You know, this is a good–
[16]
This is a good look for me.
[17]
I like the way this feels.
[19]
If only they played music.
[21]
[splat]
[22]
And stayed on my head.
[24]
Greetings and welcome to an LGR thing.
[27]
Not exactly "Oddware," although it
[29]
could be, in a way, because it is certainly odd.
[31]
This is the Burger King Headphone AM Radio
[35]
from 1983.
[38]
And before I go any further, this is not an ad for Burger King.
[41]
I actually don't like their food. [laughs] At all.
[43]
In fact, it's probably my least-favorite fast food place.
[45]
But I do like these kind of stupid gimmicky things.
[49]
Old crappy headphones
[50]
in the shape of, uh, burgers.
[52]
For some reason. And, yes,
[53]
insert a "Simpsons" reference here.
[56]
Although, those were earmuffs.
[57]
These are proper headphones with an AM radio
[60]
that may or may not work
[62]
after these many years.
[63]
But, we're about to find out once we unbox this thing.
[66]
Sorry, collectors, but you know what?
[68]
I paid the equivalent of two Whopper value meals
[72]
for this thing on eBay, so I don't feel too bad opening it up.
[75]
I had no idea
[76]
that back in the early-'80s thereabouts
[78]
there was something called the Burger King Collection
[82]
at Radio Shack stores
[84]
and they sold these
[85]
really cheap electronics with Burger King branding
[89]
because...
[90]
why not?
[91]
"Aren't You Hungry?"
[93]
Trademark, Burger King, trademark.
[95]
Uh, you know, I might be hungry if the burgers they sold actually looked like that,
[99]
but, uh, they don't.
[100]
At least, not anymore. Maybe they did in '83.
[103]
I like how the back of the packaging is mostly describing
[106]
the actual Whopper that you would get at Burger King
[108]
as opposed to the
[110]
Whopper headphones that you've actually bought.
[112]
"Features: Solid State High Sensitivity"
[115]
"Feather Light Headphone"
[117]
"Volume and Tuning Control, and a Waist Belt Clip!"
[120]
Mmm!
[121]
And "you can remove the unit from the package by opening from the back
[125]
along the dotted line."
[126]
How convenient.
[127]
Let's give it a shot.
[128]
To whoever had the foresight to buy this
[131]
33 years ago and
[133]
keep it in the package, thank you.
[136]
Some weirdo on YouTube in the future...
[138]
[plastic crackling]
[140]
is gonna have a lot of fun...
[141]
[plastic crackling]
[145]
Oh, yes!
[146]
You know, that actually was pretty easy. I gotta say.
[148]
That's...
[149]
that's pretty classy.
[151]
So we have the
[152]
AM radio itself
[154]
which also says "Aren't You Hungry?"
[157]
And it looks like we got some tuning here, which is good.
[160]
And here we go.
[162]
Stars of the show.
[163]
[plastic crackling]
[164]
[grunting]
[166]
The headphones themselves.
[168]
And they're a little...
[169]
they're packed in here.
[170]
All right.
[173]
Well. Um...
[177]
They don't feel as cheap as I thought they would.
[180]
To be honest.
[181]
In fact, they actually [chuckles] feel pretty solid.
[183]
[Laughs]
[184]
Who woulda guessed?!
[185]
On the other hand, this headband is like the cheapest thing in the world.
[188]
I mean, look at that. That's literally plastic being held in place by plastic with
[191]
a tiny bit of friction.
[193]
Just... unroll these.
[195]
This is actually a nice feeling little cable, too.
[197]
Gotta say.
[199]
Uh, that plug is...
[200]
mmm... well...
[202]
It's alright.
[203]
These on the other hand, they feel
[205]
terrible already.
[206]
[Laughs] In fact, they look
[209]
like, uh...
[210]
kinda the foam that you would find inside of an 8-track,
[212]
like, behind the tape.
[214]
Hmm...
[215]
Alright. Well,
[216]
let's test these things out!
[218]
First, we're going to put the battery inside of the AM radio.
[223]
Cheap little battery compartment there.
[225]
And it's a standard 9-volt battery, which I have laying around,
[229]
since I bought it specifically for this.
[231]
Alrighty.
[232]
There we go. Packed in there.
[234]
And we are ready to listen to AM radio
[237]
with burgers!
[239]
So the AM radio itself is just
[241]
a nice little simplistic
[243]
box, and I actually quite like it.
[245]
I like how straightforward it is. It's just a box!
[249]
It has radio components in there.
[251]
The slogan on it is kinda stupid, but the colors are lovely.
[254]
It's a nice bright white.
[256]
There's that fancy belt clip
[257]
that it was so happy to brag about on the front of the cover.
[261]
Of course, you just turn it on with the volume slider here.
[264]
[click]
[264]
[tinny music with static]
[268]
Uh, it's got some, you know–
[269]
Probably need some DeoxIT, or something, but–
[272]
Either that, or it's just really cheap.
[274]
Probably both.
[274]
[clasic soft rock]
[279]
Very appropriate music to be picking up with this thing to, I gotta say. [laughs]
[285]
I tell ya.
[285]
And of course, you've got your tuner right here.
[287]
So we can try some other AM radio stations.
[291]
Not that anything's picking up.
[294]
[staticky music]
[295]
Just the one, I guess.
[298]
You can't hear it. They're playing the Rolling Stones now. [laughs]
[301]
But, uh...
[302]
Yeah, you know what?
[302]
I gotta say, I'm actually kind of impressed
[305]
with the sound quality of these things.
[307]
They're... not as crappy
[309]
as I thought they would be.
[310]
The sound could be a bit beefier, though.
[315]
And screw studio monitor headphones.
[318]
I got these.
[320]
I'm actually quite impressed with them, to be honest.
[322]
Uh, well, you know, considering that it's something that's 33 years old-ish and [laughs],
[327]
they don't sound
[329]
like burgers. They sound like headphones.
[332]
And these are terribly uncomfortable, but
[335]
they sound okay.
[336]
And yes, I did actually plug them into, like, my phone, and
[340]
a record player and computer– just whatever I could, and they
[343]
sound... passable for
[346]
burger-shaped headphones.
[347]
So, uh...
[348]
Okay, I'm kidding about the studio headphones.
[350]
But I'm gonna keep those.
[351]
But, yes. Thank you very much for watching.
[354]
My headphones are burgers.
[357]
And if you'd like some more videos that are burgers,
[359]
then I'm sorry to disappoint you. This is the only one.
[361]
But I do have other videos on odd things.
[364]
So click a couple of these here, if you would like to click them,
[367]
or you can just subscribe to be notified when there's more in the future,
[370]
which is every Monday and Friday here on LGR.
[373]
And there's always Twitter and Facebook, if you wanna do that,
[376]
and Patreon, if you'd like to support more things.
[379]
And as always, thank you very much for watching.
[385]
Wow, this one actually pretty much stayed together.
[388]
I don't know if that's a...
[389]
a good thing or a bad thing.
