HEX in Koinly - Display Cost Basis - YouTube
Channel: SKEVAULT
[1]
hi everybody so I thought I would do a short聽
series on cost basis particularly with an emphasis聽聽
[10]
with hex in the Koinly tax app in this first part聽
I'll talk about how you can view your cost basis
[25]
and as always this is not intended聽
to be financial legal or tax advice
[34]
I'm not going to get into the specifics of cost聽
basis but just a quick comment I have is that聽聽
[43]
when you do a trade it's easy to know聽
the price or value that you sold your聽聽
[48]
crypto for but when it comes to聽
your cost basis it could be trickier聽聽
[55]
because it depends on the cost basis method that聽
you're following depending on your tax situation聽聽
[61]
it could be things like adjusted cost basis聽
or average cost basis first in first out, etc
[75]
it's easy to lose track of your cost basis if聽聽
[78]
you trade a lot or you don't聽
keep an eye on it over time
[86]
and so it becomes harder to know or even estimate聽
your capital gain or loss for your next trade
[101]
if you're using a tax app like Koinly then聽聽
[105]
make sure that the settings are聽
properly set up for your tax situation聽聽
[108]
because the way the cost basis is calculated the聽
way the taxes are calculated will depend on this
[120]
the dashboard in Koinly only shows聽
your current asset cost basis
[128]
for a cost basis in the past you聽
can look at transaction details聽聽
[133]
if they're available or you can manually inject聽
a test trade to back out the cost basis per unit
[143]
okay so here we have a test account聽
it's the same one as the previous video聽聽
[151]
it's one of the OA daughter addresses聽
and it's a very simple account basically
[161]
we have a whole bunch of hex that was聽
brought in back in November of 2020.聽聽
[169]
a whole bunch of hex was brought聽
in the initial cost basis was 3.9聽聽
[175]
million us dollars this and this is聽
for a quantity of 626.59 million hex
[187]
also a little bit of eth was brought in for fees
[194]
and then there was a single stake which聽
covered the big payday on November 19th 2020.
[206]
after it was end staked there was聽
only one other thing that happened聽聽
[210]
which was i believe this was the聽
pulse sacrifice by using hex now i聽聽
[217]
soft deleted this transaction for the purposes聽
of demonstrating the cost basis for this account
[229]
so if we go to dashboard
[234]
we can immediately see the total cost basis of 4.3聽
million dollars now this is the cost basis to date
[246]
if we hover on this message this is not聽
the total fiat used to buy your crypto聽聽
[255]
this may include things like so for example聽
if you are in a tax jurisdiction where when聽聽
[261]
you end stake your hex if the reward聽
that is paid out is considered as聽聽
[267]
taxable income that amount聽
will increase your cost basis
[275]
now if we scroll down to holdings we can see a聽
breakdown of your assets for this account clearly聽聽
[282]
hex accounts for the majority of holdings聽
we can see a 4.3 million dollar cost basis聽聽
[292]
for 851 billion units of hex聽
which results in around 0.0051
[302]
us dollars per unit of hex聽
as your cost basis per unit
[308]
and then down here we have the eth cost basis
[319]
if this is your first time
[323]
using Koinly or getting it set up you should聽
head over to settings and make sure that
[332]
all the settings here are correct um聽
for your situation so for example um
[342]
after setting your home聽
country and your base currency
[347]
make sure that the cost basis method that you聽
have selected here is correct and accurate聽聽
[354]
and for this example I'm聽
just using average cost basis
[365]
now let's say you want to figure out聽
your cost basis on November 21st of 2020
[375]
if there's a trade transaction nearby聽
i believe you can click on that and it聽聽
[382]
will show you the cost basis but聽
let's assume that there isn't one聽聽
[389]
what we can do is we can inject a test trade聽
on November 21st to back out the cost basis
[402]
so we go to add a new transaction a trade聽
and for the date we're just going to use um聽聽
[414]
a date after the end state date so聽
let's just use November 30th 2020.
[435]
So we are putting in a dummy transaction聽
to sell let's say a million units of HEX聽聽
[444]
and we're just gonna sell this for it聽
doesn't really matter we'll just use a dollar
[461]
so what this says is that if we were to聽
sell a million units of hex our cost basis聽聽
[470]
would have been about five thousand dollars US
[480]
so if we bring the numbers over to a spreadsheet聽
we can easily back out what the cost per unit聽聽
[485]
would have been and as you can see we can also聽
get some additional precision in the decimals
[495]
also just remember to delete the聽
test transaction when you're done
[502]
