have you been wondering who qualifies
[2]
for Medicare you might be surprised to
[3]
learn that when you're eligible for
[5]
Medicare differs for when you're
[6]
eligible for Social Security and it's
[9]
very important not to miss your initial
[10]
enrollment window upon qualifying for
[12]
Medicare hi there if we haven't met yet
[14]
I'm Danielle Roberts with boomer
[16]
benefits where we help baby boomers
[18]
navigate their entry into Medicare in
[20]
this video I'll go over who qualifies
[23]
for Medicare when you become eligible to
[25]
enroll in Medicare and which people need
[27]
to actively enroll in Medicare versus
[29]
those people who will be enrolled
[31]
automatically I'll also discuss the
[33]
difference between Medicare and Medicaid
[35]
it's a quick video so stay tuned

[45]
Medicare was originally created as a
[47]
health insurance program for people aged
[48]
65 and older and it still is today
[51]
however in 1972 Congress extended
[54]
Medicare eligibility to people on Social
[56]
Security disability let's look at how
[58]
each group becomes eligible for Medicare
[62]
people who age into Medicare are
[65]
eligible to enroll at age 65 you must be
[68]
a US citizen or a permanent resident who
[70]
has lived continuously in the United
[72]
States for the last five years
[73]
note that your eligibility for Medicare
[76]
is not dependent on whether you have
[78]
enrolled in Social Security income
[79]
benefits yet you are eligible to enroll
[82]
in Social Security income benefits as
[84]
early as age 62 but of course you can
[87]
also delay that enrollment to as late as
[89]
age 70 the longer you wait to enroll the
[92]
greater your monthly Social Security
[94]
income check will be when you finally do
[95]
enroll no matter when you sign up for
[98]
Social Security income benefits your
[100]
eligibility for Medicare begins at age
[102]
65 or most people now if you did sign up
[106]
for Social Security before age 65 then
[109]
the Social Security office will assume
[111]
that you've already retired and they
[112]
will automatically enroll you into
[114]
Medicare Parts A and B when you turn 65
[117]
however if you've not yet signed up for
[119]
Social Security income benefits by the
[121]
time you turn 65 the government will
[124]
assume you're still working this means
[126]
you need to actively enroll in Medicare
[128]
yourself for more on when to enroll in
[131]
Medicare you can follow the links at the
[132]
end
[133]
video to our other YouTube video about
[135]
when to enroll in Medicare some people
[139]
qualify for Medicare early due to a
[141]
disability or major health condition for
[143]
example if you're awarded Social
[144]
Security disability income benefits
[146]
prior to age 65 then you will qualify
[149]
for Medicare automatically after the
[151]
24th month of disability there is an
[153]
exception in that people who receive
[155]
Social Security disability income
[156]
benefits and are also diagnosed with Lou
[159]
Gehrig's disease will be enrolled into
[161]
Medicare on the first month of their
[163]
disability benefits individuals who are
[166]
on kidney dialysis or who are kidney
[168]
transplant patients are also eligible
[170]
for Medicare prior to age 65 before we
[174]
sign off I should mention that Medicare
[176]
and Medicaid are two different things
[177]
Medicare is a federal health insurance
[179]
program for people aged 65 and older or
[182]
younger people with certain disabilities
[183]
as we have just discussed Medicaid on
[186]
the other hand is a joint federal and
[188]
state program that helps with medical
[190]
costs for some individuals with low
[192]
incomes and limited resources it is
[195]
possible to qualify for both Medicare
[198]
and full Medicaid benefits at the same
[200]
time and if you qualify for both
[202]
Medicare will be primary insurance and
[204]
Medicaid will pay secondary so now you
[207]
know who qualifies for Medicare do you
[210]
have a question about Medicare's cost
[211]
coverage enrollment deadlines or
[213]
penalties if so type your question in
[216]
the comments below and I'll be more than
[217]
happy to answer and if you need
[219]
assistance with signing up for Medicare
