[0]
hey everyone my name is kenji and in this video聽 i want to walk you through my investment banking聽聽
[3]
cover letter so this is a cover letter that聽 got me multiple interviews at places like聽聽
[8]
jp morgan morgan stanley and bank of america it is聽 true that in the end i ended up working on goldman聽聽
[13]
sachs where they didn't actually require a cover聽 letter instead they require the 300 word personal聽聽
[19]
statement and it is true some investment banks聽 require more essay-like questions but the overall聽聽
[24]
idea is still very much like a cover letter so聽 i'll also be attaching a cover letter template聽聽
[29]
in case you want to use it for yourself so before聽 we get into the details let's first look at the聽聽
[33]
differences between a resume and a cover letter聽 so essentially in a resume it should be much聽聽
[38]
more factual as in year one i did this year two聽 i did this and it's more like a bio in that sense聽聽
[44]
whilst the cover letter has much more of a flow to聽 it it's more like a sales pitch where you have a聽聽
[48]
whole story behind you as to why you want this job聽 and why you're the right candidate a cover letter聽聽
[53]
is also a great place to explain yourself so聽 for instance if you don't have amazing grades or聽聽
[58]
if you study something that's not finance related聽 things like that you can really convey them and聽聽
[62]
put a good story to it during the cover letter聽 whilst it's not really possible in the cv ring聽聽
[67]
so you're probably wondering which one is more聽 important well a cv is by far a lot more important聽聽
[73]
basically a cv is the one that when you get to the聽 interview room usually the person interviewing you聽聽
[77]
has it ready whilst the cover letter is just聽 nowhere to be seen but on the whole uh cover聽聽
[82]
letter if you don't do it well can still hurt聽 you can still get you rejected basically but on聽聽
[87]
the flip side it's probably not gonna be the deal聽 breaker it's probably not gonna get you the job聽聽
[91]
all right so here's my cover letter as you聽 can see it's only one page long it doesn't聽聽
[95]
occupy the whole page but that's fine you聽 really only want to put whatever is relevant聽聽
[100]
in there and that being said you can see that it's聽 fairly simple there's no fancy colors there's no聽聽
[105]
images no things like that that can be distracting聽 to the viewer and that's really how they're meant聽聽
[110]
to be for investment banking in terms of sections聽 it's really five main ones the first one is聽聽
[114]
just the header or the contact details then you聽 have the intro so essentially who you are after聽聽
[120]
that you're gonna have a section called widest聽 company or widest position while you're into it聽聽
[125]
next up you'll probably have something called聽 a yu why you're the right candidate basically聽聽
[130]
essentially your sales pitch and then聽 lastly you might finish with a closing聽聽
[134]
but overall between why this company and聽 why you you might sometimes flip that聽聽
[139]
depending on how strong you are of a candidate聽 and what kind of a compelling answer you have聽聽
[144]
and i'd say this cover letter the structure not聽 only applies to investment banking but also to聽聽
[148]
say management consulting or accounting or聽 any other really like business oriented role聽聽
[154]
all right so let's get into the details of each聽 section so for the header this is really quite聽聽
[158]
simple essentially you have the recruiters info聽 on one side so their email their contacts etc聽聽
[164]
and then on the other side they're going to聽 have your own contact details that might be聽聽
[168]
name email address things like that but that聽 said in my case at least i usually didn't know聽聽
[174]
the recruiters there so i didn't really have their聽 emails right so i would just omit that part and聽聽
[179]
you only have your own contact details and that's聽 fine at least for me it wasn't really a problem聽聽
[184]
that said if you do have the requires info聽 or you've gotten in touch with that person聽聽
[188]
before then obviously put it right it's not聽 it's not gonna hurt your your cover letter聽聽
[193]
all right so moving on to the intro section here聽 you just wanna introduce yourself right so i was聽聽
[197]
a full-time student so that's essentially what i聽 wrote right i'm studying at this university i'm in聽聽
[202]
this year i hope to graduate by this time and this聽 is my major it's really that simple now if you're聽聽
[207]
a full-time worker you might have something like聽 your position and the department you work at with聽聽
[212]
the company name it's really just that then after聽 that you want to add how you learned about this聽聽
[217]
company so maybe you had a networking event at聽 your school or you know the recruiter or you know聽聽
[222]
someone inside that's recommended you things like聽 that if you do have them make sure to put them聽聽
[227]
they really help out the recruiter and聽 overall they do probably give you a preference聽聽
[231]
if you've already been to one of their events聽 say but that said in my case at least sometimes i聽聽
[236]
didn't really have any connecting points so i just聽 didn't put anything right i just said that hey i'm聽聽
[240]
interested in the position um whilst not really聽 linking it to anything else and then towards the聽聽
[245]
end of the paragraph you just want to say what聽 specific position you're applying to and what the聽聽
[249]
company's name is so after that we have the widest聽 company and why this position section and here i聽聽
[255]
typically have a first widest company and then i聽 might have why this specific role so starting off聽聽
[260]
with why this company if i'm applying to goldman聽 sachs i might say something like i want to gain聽聽
[264]
exposure to some of the largest transactions in聽 the economy like most recently your airbnb ipo聽聽
[270]
where you were an advisor to and things like that聽 so overall you do try to give examples of some of聽聽
[275]
the work that they do so they really see that聽 you're keen on it and you've done your research聽聽
[279]
right now moving on to the widest position side聽 suppose i'm applying to goldman sachs for their聽聽
[285]
analyst position so here i'm essentially going聽 to say some of the tasks that analysts usually聽聽
[290]
do a goldman sachs and explain why i might enjoy聽 them so for instance i might say something like聽聽
[296]
i'm very keen on the analyst position because聽 of the high responsibilities the collaborative聽聽
[301]
environment and the use of financial modelling聽 all of which i consider fundamental to a career聽聽
[306]
in the financial services industry or something聽 like that then after that we get into the why me聽聽
[311]
or why i'm the right candidate section so here聽 it's essentially a sales pitch right you wanna聽聽
[316]
explain whatever you're good at and how that's聽 gonna relate to the role ideally you wanna give聽聽
[320]
some examples of that also you should have a good聽 idea of the types of skills that they might look聽聽
[325]
for in an investment banking candidate say for聽 an investment banking analyst they might look for聽聽
[330]
someone that's good with finance and accounting聽 that's numerically oriented that's a team player聽聽
[335]
and say that enjoys a high pressure environment聽 so all these things you want to try to relate them聽聽
[340]
back to your previous roles or your university聽 courses such that it looks like you're the ideal聽聽
[345]
candidate right so in my case for instance if we聽 look at my example i previously worked at pwc in聽聽
[350]
their financial audit team so essentially the role聽 is somewhat similar to the investment banking role聽聽
[355]
where i work with financial models i聽 work with accounting and i worked with聽聽
[360]
finance so these are all things that are relatable聽 to the role that said i realize most of you聽聽
[364]
probably haven't worked at pwc so let's look at聽 my other example where i worked as a belmont and聽聽
[369]
that's got nothing to do with finance at all聽 but if you pitch it well um it can have some聽聽
[374]
some kind of link and some kind of relationships聽 between the two so for instance in bellman you聽聽
[379]
work as a team right an investor monk as well so聽 you say you're a team player that's one number two聽聽
[383]
you might say you have attention to detail right聽 if you work at a five-star hotel say that means聽聽
[388]
that you're clearly attentive to what's going聽 on and you want to deliver high customer service聽聽
[392]
that's the second one thirdly you might say you've聽 have exposure to client interactions just like聽聽
[398]
investment bankers do that's another linking point聽 and so on and so forth so you kind of get the idea聽聽
[402]
you can use that for bartender roles say you can聽 use that for really anything that's people related聽聽
[408]
so yeah that's how you kind of pitch it聽 in order to become the ideal candidate聽聽
[412]
i also added a paragraph on my background i聽 felt like it added to the application i speak聽聽
[417]
five different languages so that's something聽 that they could look at favorably hopefully聽聽
[421]
so if you have something that differentiates聽 you whether it's that you you were an athlete聽聽
[425]
that you did really well in a math competition or聽 whatever it is and if you feel like it's strong聽聽
[430]
then just put it in there and overall there is聽 no real guideline as to how many paragraphs it聽聽
[435]
should be it's essentially whatever makes it聽 strongest right so if you really only have聽聽
[440]
one work experience just put that one and you聽 don't really have to talk about what you did聽聽
[444]
when you were 15 years old right and then lastly聽 for the conclusion here you just want to reiterate聽聽
[449]
that you're keen on this position that you really聽 appreciate their time in reviewing the application聽聽
[454]
that's really about it there's really no tricks聽 on this section and you might wonder if i made a聽聽
[458]
cover letter for each application the honest聽 answer is no usually i just had a template聽聽
[463]
and it would take me about five minutes to聽 rearrange that to whatever bank i was applying to聽聽
[467]
so i might look up a deal that they worked聽 on and kind of put it in there for instance聽聽
[471]
or sometimes i just didn't have the time or聽 i wasn't bothered and i just have the exact聽聽
[475]
same cover letter only changing the name of the聽 bank but if you have a solid template you should聽聽
[479]
be able to get away with changing it in 5-10聽 minutes and honestly if you're applying to say聽聽
[484]
25 positions or more then you really don't want聽 to be spending one hour on each cover letter right聽聽
[489]
also another thing i did which i found quite聽 useful was to have a cover letter for each聽聽
[493]
industry that i'm keen on so for instance one of聽 the industries was investment banking obviously聽聽
[498]
another one was real estate or accounting and so聽 i'd have one cover letter for each and showcasing聽聽
[503]
and tailoring my skills to that industry right聽 so yeah that's the end of the video hope you聽聽
[508]
found it useful if you did feel free to like and聽 subscribe and if you have any questions do put聽聽
[512]
them in the comments i'll make sure to get back聽 to you and i'll hopefully catch in the next one
