[6]
Hi everybody it鈥檚 Jenny from the MSQC. And I have a fun project for you today. Let鈥檚
[11]
take a look at this quilt behind me. Isn鈥檛 this great? Love these great big diamonds.
[16]
They鈥檙e just really fun and so easy. So to make this quilt what you鈥檙e going to
[20]
need is one packet of ten inch squares and we, that鈥檚 42 of them. And we have used
[26]
Sun Drops by Cory Yoder from Moda. And it鈥檚 just a great little line. You鈥檙e also going
[31]
to need a yard and a quarter of background fabric. Now that鈥檚 going to take care of
[35]
this inner piece right here and this first 2 陆 inch border out there. For your outer
[40]
border you鈥檙e going to need a yard and a quarter. And this is a nice six inch border.
[44]
And so it just makes, it just frames up the quilt really pretty. Now if you want to check
[48]
on the backing, the backing is going to be 4 陆 yards right here. And this is the backing
[54]
we used. It鈥檚 the same as the border and it鈥檚 just really, really pretty.
[58]
So to make this quilt you鈥檙e going to need your simple wedge ruler. And the reason we
[61]
like the simple wedge is because you can get two cuts out of every ten inch square with
[67]
our wedge. So the first thing we鈥檙e going to do is we鈥檙e going to bring over our ten
[71]
inch squares and we have a couple right here. And you can see I鈥檝e stacked them on top
[75]
of each other which is actually great. You know, most of the times you can stack about
[80]
four and that makes your cutting go twice as fast. So we鈥檙e going to lay this on here
[84]
like this. And we鈥檙e going to make our first cut. And we are going to go right in here
[90]
just like this. And be careful at this point right here. And then we鈥檙e going to cut
[95]
right down this side. Now those are, those are cut right there and ready to go. And,
[100]
and this is where our wedge fits and really all we do is just move it over like this.
[106]
Alright so once you get this all lined up on your second piece then we鈥檙e going to
[110]
cut this as well. And I鈥檓 just going to come along here. And then I鈥檓 going to flip
[114]
this over because I want to get my edge really nice and clean. And you can see I鈥檓 barely
[121]
shaving off a little piece on there. And we鈥檙e ready to go. So then you have your two wedges.
[127]
Now this quilt, because it鈥檚 big diamonds, you鈥檙e going to want to lay it out because
[132]
you want to make sure that they match up with each other. So you鈥檙e going to have one
[138]
that goes this way and you鈥檙e going to put its matching piece down here. Now these are
[143]
going to be sewn together in rows like this. So then, and since, to get them to match up
[149]
you have to put one up and one down, then the other half of this one is going to be
[155]
up here like this. So you鈥檙e constantly working like on three rows. So you鈥檙e just
[159]
going to keep laying them out. Like this one will go here. And this one will go here. Just
[167]
like this. And making sure that your other halves are always on the opposite side like
[175]
this. So you have your rows together. Now I have a couple of rows over here that are
[179]
sewn together. Right here. And you can see that I鈥檝e started with a white square. You
[188]
want to start and end every row with a white, I mean, I鈥檓 sorry a wedge, with a white
[194]
wedge. You want to start every row with one of these. Because this is what鈥檚 going to
[198]
make your border. You鈥檙e going to trim this off. Now I tried cutting them in half, it
[202]
just didn鈥檛 work as well. And so a little bit of waste on our edge there. But other
[207]
than that, you know you鈥檙e going to get your rows, you鈥檙e going to sew your rows
[210]
together like this. And then you鈥檙e going to come back later and you鈥檙e just going
[214]
to trim these off. You just want to leave a quarter of an inch right here at this junction
[219]
right here. And then just come and trim these off. And that鈥檚 what makes your straight
[223]
edge.
[224]
So there鈥檚 a few things I don鈥檛 want to overlook on this that make it a little bit
[227]
easier. And so I want to go over those really quick. Because this is such a quick easy project,
[234]
you know, it鈥檚 easy to get caught up in the doing of it and not pay attention to some
[238]
of the details. And so I wanted to go over this right here. When you鈥檙e ready, actually
[242]
let me use a lighter one so it鈥檚 easier for you to see. When you are ready to sew
[247]
your two pieces together, so you have them laid like this and you鈥檙e ready to sew those
[251]
two together, there鈥檚 a little tip I want to remind you of. So what I want you to do
[258]
when you lay these right on the edges, I want you to try and have a little bit of quarter
[263]
of an inch of your bottom one sticking out and then a quarter of an inch of this hang
[267]
over. They will match up. But if you do that they鈥檒l be off set a little bit. So this
[272]
makes it so that when you sew across here that will actually open up the quarter of
[276]
an inch seam. So let me sew that quarter of an inch down here to show you what I mean.
[280]
So remember, just a little ear hanging over on each side, a quarter of an inch. And let
[284]
me show you that so you can see that.
[286]
So I鈥檓 just going to start this right here and my needle can go right in that little
[291]
divot. And you鈥檙e just going to sew down like that. So now let鈥檚 open it up, and
[305]
these should be, see how these lay really nice like that. And they stay with your, with
[309]
your quarter of an inch. One doesn鈥檛 slide up or down. You don鈥檛 have to hide anything
[313]
in your seam. And so just remember to hang your tails over.
[317]
The other is is when you鈥檙e getting ready to sew your rows together right like this.
[322]
So here you have your rows all laid out and you鈥檙e getting ready to sew them together,
[326]
you鈥檙e going to put them right on top of each other like this and you are going to
[330]
nest these seams. So right here these two where these points come together, you know
[335]
try to keep all your seams going this way on one row and going that way on the other
[339]
row. And you鈥檙e going to nest these up and you can pretty much feel them as you go along.
[345]
One will go to one side and one will go to the other. And then they鈥檒l have a nice
[349]
match up. So we can also sew those just so you see that. You know some of these things
[356]
for, for those of us who have been quilting a long time, these are just old, you know,
[360]
things that we know. These are standards. But sometimes I get, I get going so quick
[366]
on things that I鈥檓 like, Oh I didn鈥檛 match those up. And then you feel like you鈥檝e
[371]
got to pull those out and make sure they line up real carefully. So hopefully this will
[375]
just make everybody pay a little attention and not rush through this too fast. Because
[381]
with these easy quilts, it鈥檚 easy to get going. And, you know, then we鈥檙e like the
[385]
horse to water. We just fly home. Alright so let鈥檚 look at this so you can see what
[390]
I鈥檓 talking about. So when they nest up like this, see right there how that goes together
[395]
so pretty and it makes the nice, you get your points right there. And the come together
[399]
so nice. And it looks like diamonds. Also once you鈥檙e ready to, you get your rows
[407]
together, and of course remember you鈥檙e going to start and end with a white. And once
[412]
you get your rows together, see how this comes together as a quarter of an inch. And that
[415]
gives you the line that you鈥檙e going to cut your pieces off on. And you鈥檙e just
[420]
going to lay this, I would lay this straight on the mat like this. And then go ahead and
[425]
come, you鈥檒l come a quarter of an inch over on that line. And come straight down. And
[428]
trim your edge. And that will work for you.
[431]
So let鈥檚 look at our quilt one more time. You know we鈥檝e got our diamonds across here.
[436]
And you can see it鈥檚 starts, there鈥檚 our little half diamond, I mean I鈥檓 sorry, half
[441]
wedge on this side for the, of the white to give it the straight edge that we鈥檙e then
[447]
going to sew our 2 陆 inch border to. So of these little diamonds you鈥檙e going to put
[452]
one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve across. And we are
[457]
going to have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven rows down. So, so just remember
[465]
that will help you with the layout. Goes together super quick and it鈥檚 an awesome quilt. And
[470]
we hope you enjoyed this tutorial on Simple Diamonds from the MSQC.
