big
[8]
advantage and disadvantage of using a
[10]
factoring company and then i want to

give you my opinion on whether or not a
[14]
new freight broker should engage in a
[15]
relationship
[16]
with a factoring company and then as a
[18]
new freight broker if you decide a
[19]
relationship is best for you
[21]
what's the duration of that relationship
[23]
how long should you be in relationship
[25]
with a factory company
[26]
so sit back relax for a minute and enjoy
[29]
the video
[36]

[70]

[73]
so now let me give you a quick snapshot
[75]
of how a factoring company works
[77]
remember before i told you that a
[78]
business is about making money
[81]
so a factoring company is a business so
[83]
they are about making money
[85]
and what they realize is that there's an
[87]
opportunity amongst business owners like
[89]
me
[89]
like you if you have a small business or
[92]
you have a freight broker business
[93]
they understand that there's an
[95]
opportunity to service
[97]
the problems that you have they have you
[99]
have a problem
[100]
and they have a solution to your problem
[102]
they say hey brandon over at alliance
[103]
logistics
[104]
i know that you're a new freight broker
[106]
and i know that you have a problem
[109]
and i have a solution your problem is
[112]
you're new
[112]
and you don't have a whole lot of cash
[114]
on hand and you have to pay invoices
[116]
you have to pay your carriers when they
[119]
completed loans
[120]
now you can do that in one of two ways
[122]
you can have a
[123]
set of cash of yours that's on the
[125]
sideline that you're ready to pay
[127]
carriers with
[128]
a big nest egg that could exceed fifty
[131]
thousand dollars every month
[133]
that's not a whole lot at all for a new
[134]
freight broker so that means you would
[136]
have to have fifty thousand dollars on
[138]
the sideline and you're gonna pay
[139]
carriers on your own
[140]
or you can use our services and we'll
[143]
let you focus on your core
[144]
responsibilities moving loads serving
[146]
your
[147]
customers and we're focused on making
[149]
sure that
[150]
your customers get paid on time they
[152]
stand in the gap for you
[154]
and say hey we're going to purchase your
[156]
invoices and we're going to pay your
[158]
invoices
[158]
and not only are we going to pay your
[160]
invoices we're going to even pay your
[162]
commission
[163]
so you don't have to wait to get paid
[165]
from the shipper we'll take that on
[167]
we'll wait and let you focus on your
[170]
responsibility to get your money
[172]
to growing quicker than you would having
[174]
to wait on it we'll get you that money
[175]
in your hand so you can utilize it
[177]
because you're a small business you're
[178]
going to need to utilize your money
[180]
and in addition to that we'll make sure
[181]
that quick pay services are available to
[183]
you and connect you with
[185]
efs account or com data account as a
[188]
parent company
[189]
you'll be able to come underneath our
[191]
company and have your own efs account or
[193]
com data account set up
[195]
so that you can make lumper fee payments
[197]
or fuel
[198]
advancements how does that sound so now
[201]
you being a savvy business owner you are
[202]
you just have a couple questions you
[204]
want to pose to the freight factoring
[205]
company
[206]
you say hey sounds like a really good
[208]
service and my company could benefit
[210]
from that type of service but i didn't
[211]
hear you say
[212]
how much it was going to cost me and
[213]
wouldn't it be better off for me
[215]
if i just go through a bank and get a
[217]
business line of credit or business loan
[219]
and get a better rate or can you offer
[221]
those same rates
[222]
and last but not least when i give up
[224]
control of my invoices am i giving up
[226]
total control
[227]
where you're invoicing my shipper now
[229]
and you're having access to all of my
[231]
information i don't have any control
[233]
over that
[234]
how does that work so really good
[236]
questions question number one you said
[238]
how much is it going to cost you well
[240]
it's going to cost usually from two and
[241]
a half to five percent depending on
[243]
the freight factoring company you're
[244]
using when i use the factoring company
[247]
from 2015 to 2018
[249]
i used a company called trans am
[251]
financial solutions
[252]
and i paid five percent for each of the
[255]
years that i was working with that
[256]
company
[257]
now of course after you've worked a year
[259]
or two you may want to go back to the
[260]
table and renegotiate to try to get
[262]
lower rates
[263]
and especially if you've increased
[264]
volume if you had a bigger volume now
[266]
you it's very possible that you can get
[268]
a decrease in rates
[269]
but usually what you're going to see is
[271]
about two and a half to five percent
[273]
depending on the company that you use
[275]
you also ask a very good question about
[277]
hey so wouldn't i be in a better
[280]
position
[280]
if i decided to work with a bank instead
[283]
of working with a factoring company
[284]
wouldn't i get better rates
[286]
yes it's very likely that you're going
[287]
to get better rates with a bank
[289]
but the question is will you qualify
[293]
for a loan will you qualify for a
[295]
business loan of crit line of credit
[296]
if you are a new company and most of us
[299]
as new companies
[300]
the company is not producing anything
[302]
yet you don't have any established
[304]
business credit
[305]
you're very likely not to be approved
[307]
for business line of credit or
[308]
business loan so that is the purpose of
[311]
having a factoring company and your
[312]
third question you ask
[314]
would you be giving up total control of
[315]
your invoices and the answer to that
[317]
question
[318]
is yes in most cases and most times
[320]
you're going to be giving up
[321]
total control of your invoices and your
[324]
factoring company will now be
[326]
invoicing your shipper you will not be
[329]
doing that action you will invoice the
[332]
factoring company
[333]
and the factoring company will directly
[335]
invoice your shipper so they have access
[337]
to all of your shippers information
[339]
now there are several advantages and
[341]
disadvantages of having a freight
[342]
factoring company but for the purpose of
[344]
this video
[345]
i want to stick to what i see as the
[348]
greatest advantage
[349]
to having a factoring company and the
[350]
greatest disadvantage to having a
[352]
factoring company
[353]
so let's start out with the greatest
[355]
advantage the greatest advantage in my
[357]
opinion is
[358]
i get the 100 freedom to move as many
[361]
loads as i possibly can
[363]
without having to worry about how i'm
[365]
going to pay for those loads
[367]
the factoring company is going to ensure
[368]
that those loads are paid for and all i
[370]
have to do is worry about
[372]
focusing my attention on getting more
[374]
and more freight from my shipper without
[376]
worrying
[377]
how i'm going to pay for it that is a
[379]
huge luxury in my opinion
[381]
now this next one is a huge disadvantage
[383]
in my opinion
[384]
and it's one that i struggle with but
[386]
it's kind of like one of those necessary
[388]
evils
[389]
and that is i have to give up total
[391]
control
[392]
to the freight factoring company when it
[394]
comes down to my invoices
[396]
i have to give them access to my shipper
[399]
now i never want to do that because
[401]
that's given
[402]
the shipper or giving the freight
[404]
factoring company
[405]
all of my shippers information their
[407]
direct emails their direct phone numbers
[410]
they get to see what exactly i'm bidding
[413]
on those loads
[414]
what my shippers are paying for those
[415]
loads they get to see
[417]
everything so they got all of the
[419]
information so
[420]
now do you think that it's fair game if
[422]
they say okay well i'm going to go and
[424]
start
[425]
proposing to those shippers that i can
[427]
move those loads for x amount of dollars
[430]
sure it is because they don't sign
[431]
anything with me saying hey they're not
[433]
going to go after
[434]
our shippers you know so that's just
[436]
something that you kind of accept as a
[438]
necessary evil
[440]
to get you through your cash deficiency
[443]
and once you get in a position where you
[445]
start to accumulate cash the whole idea
[448]
is to terminate that relationship after
[451]
some time
[452]
now that leads me into when do i think
[454]
it's a good time to
[456]
start to move away from your freight
[458]
factoring company
[460]
well this is how i looked at it that's
[461]
going to be determined by you and your
[463]
business
[464]
what's happening in your business but i
[466]
think the sooner you move away from a
[468]
factoring company the better
[470]
for you because when you look at it if
[472]
you're going to continue to give
[474]
your factoring companies that kind of
[476]
advantage that is a
[478]
a huge huge bone you're throwing them
[480]
because what you have to understand is
[481]
that
[482]
factoring companies are not just
[483]
factoring companies for example i told
[485]
you i work with
[486]
trans am financial well trans am
[488]
financial is also
[489]
a trucking company you know so we're
[491]
direct competitors so they'll definitely
[493]
use that information i'm sure
[495]
if and go and propose to those customers
[498]
my customers
[500]
what they can get loads done for maybe
[501]
they can get them done cheaper than than
[503]
they see that we're paying for them so
[505]
it's just a lot of information that you
[506]
give away
[508]
when you're using a factory company
[510]
you're giving it
[511]
directly to your competitors sometimes
[512]
so that's a huge one
[514]
that you know that you you definitely
[516]
need to be looking for you know to get
[517]
rid of
[518]
sooner than later and how i look at that
[521]
you know for me it was a three-year
[522]
period
[523]
you know i really wanted to leave at the
[524]
two-year mark but i hadn't
[527]
accumulated enough cash at that point
[529]
and
[530]
you know we were getting we had a
[532]
business line of credit at the
[533]
three-year mark i got a business line of
[534]
credit
[535]
but i wanted sufficient amount of cash
[537]
plus the business line of credit
[539]
to be able to pay for those invoices and
[541]
the third year
[542]
was about the time that we got there so
[544]
i think that you know year three
[546]
may be a time that you may be able to
[547]
look at maybe a little sooner maybe a
[549]
little later
[550]
you would have to look at your specific
[551]
situation and finally would i recommend
[554]
that new freight brokers start a
[555]
factoring company relationship
[557]
absolutely yes and the reason for that
[559]
is because i feel like the advantages
[562]
outweigh the disadvantage even though i
[564]
have a really big
[565]
you know problem with giving my
[566]
information to an outside agency
[569]
with the factoring company it's gonna
[571]
allow for me to move loads freely
[572]
without having to worry about how i'm
[574]
gonna pay for them so i'm willing you
[576]
know to go ahead and accept that
[577]
trade-off
[578]
but of course it's only for a period of
[580]
time but yes i would recommend
[582]
that new freight brokers use factoring
[584]
companies for that reason now if you
[586]
have a surplus of cash
[587]
then you may not need a factoring
[588]
company but if you don't have that cash
[591]
definitely a factoring company would
[593]
would help you
[594]
so a quick summary of what we just
[595]
talked about number one we talked about
[597]
what a factoring company is
[598]
and how does it work number two we
[600]
talked about the advantages and
[602]
disadvantages of using a factoring
[604]
company
[604]
number three we talked about the
[605]
duration how long you should use a
[607]
factoring company if you decided to use
[609]
one
[609]
and number four i talked about whether
[611]
or not i would recommend
[613]
new freight brokers use factoring
[614]
companies so now that's what i wanted to
[616]
share with you today
