The 6 Best English-Speaking Countries You Can Retire To - YouTube

Channel: Live and Invest Overseas

[6]
(Kathleen) Six best places to go overseas if you聽 don't want to learn a new language we're going聽聽
[10]
to tell you in just a minute. Hi I'm Kathleen聽 Peddicord. (Lief) I'm Lief Simon. (Kathleen) It's聽聽
[14]
a new episode of our Live and Invest Overseas聽 Podcast. One of the main reasons someone, maybe聽聽
[20]
you, could be reluctant to move to a new country聽 even if they're dying to do it if it's their dream聽聽
[25]
of a lifetime is because they're worried they'll聽 have to learn a new language and afraid they just聽聽
[29]
won't be able to or frankly just don't want to聽 have to. You don't necessarily have to we have聽聽
[35]
six places where you could live or retire overseas聽 comfortably, happily, build a very rich fulfilling聽聽
[42]
life, and NOT have to learn a new language. Let's聽 start with three places, three countries where in聽聽
[47]
fact the language is English. (Lief) Right聽 exactly, and we're not talking about the UK,聽聽
[52]
Australia or New Zealand. We're talking about聽 places where you can get residency, where you聽聽
[56]
can actually move - although you can move to the聽 U.K it's a bit complicated - but the first one is聽聽
[62]
Belize and Belize is one of the former British聽 colonies so English is the official language,聽聽
[72]
a lot of people speak Spanish as well because聽 Belize is surrounded by Spanish speaking countries聽聽
[78]
but everything is done in government and legal聽 wise in English in Belize. (Kathleen) Right,聽聽
[86]
so exactly that's something that you may not聽 have thought about you may just be thinking about聽聽
[89]
getting through the day without having to learn聽 a new language but there's another level to it聽聽
[93]
that can be even a little more intimidating聽 which is the legal aspect. If you're going聽聽
[97]
to be signing a contract for even a lease a聽 rental but certainly if you're going to buy,聽聽
[102]
if all the contracts are in Spanish or聽 French or Portuguese it's a little more聽聽
[107]
intimidating. (Lief) Right, so what does Belize聽 have to offer besides speaking English? Well it's聽聽
[112]
a great destination for beaches and weather. It's a Caribbean destination. There are islands聽聽
[118]
off of the coast of Belize that would qualify as聽 Caribbean islands and the downside is hurricanes聽聽
[124]
so you do have the potential for hurricanes. They聽 get them almost every year not in a dramatic way聽聽
[130]
but not as bad as the Gulf Coast of the U.S聽 this year but once every couple of years you聽聽
[136]
get a pretty strong storm coming through Belize聽 which also hits the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico聽聽
[141]
which has another destination we'll talk about聽 in a second. (Kathleen) But for me maybe the聽聽
[145]
most compelling reason to look at Belize can be聽 the people and the society and the culture. It's聽聽
[151]
the most diverse, eclectic, and open-minded聽 and welcoming culture in fact that I know of聽聽
[158]
except for the next country we're going to聽 talk about I would put them on par each with聽聽
[162]
the other but they're very different places in聽 this part of the world though, in the Americas,聽聽
[168]
Belize really is the most open-minded. The聽 Belizeans aren't worried about who you are,聽聽
[174]
where you came from or anything about you except聽 that you're doing your best and you're not causing聽聽
[179]
them any problem it's very much live and let聽 live exactly I'll do my thing you, do yours,聽聽
[183]
I'll mind my business, you mind your business聽 and everybody gets along. (Kathleen) All right,聽聽
[188]
the second place which again I think as well as聽 Belize is very open-minded and open-hearted and聽聽
[196]
welcoming culture is Ireland. (Lief) Right totally聽 different place but before we jump to Ireland we聽聽
[199]
didn't mention so Belize for residency is fairly聽 straightforward. There's the QRP program that has聽聽
[205]
it's for retirees if you have two thousand dollars聽 a month in pension income or social security you聽聽
[209]
can qualify or you can just move to Belize and if聽 you're there for 12 months straight renewing your聽聽
[216]
tourist visa you can then apply for permanent聽 residency. So Belize, has a very easy way聽聽
[222]
to live there, is just by showing up and continue聽 to renew your tourist visa. (Kathleen) Right,聽聽
[225]
which is a great thing to point out because you聽 may have heard of the QRP Program, the Qualified聽聽
[230]
Retiree Person Program - I think is what it's聽 called - and that's been very well promoted聽聽
[237]
and it can make a lot of sense for a lot of people聽 but it requires a minimum monthly income of two聽聽
[243]
thousand dollars that might not work for everyone.聽 But you do have an option that you may not have聽聽
[247]
heard about because it just isn't discussed聽 as often, it requires no proof of income,聽聽
[252]
it requires no upfront investment in real聽 estate or anything else you just you show up.聽聽
[258]
(Lief) It does require that you to show that you聽 can take care of yourself while you're there,聽聽
[263]
but you know you don't need 2 000 a month to聽 live in Belize. Ireland on the other hand,聽聽
[268]
has decided that they don't really want retirees聽 and so they changed their immigration law a few聽聽
[274]
years ago now, - I think it is now pushing more聽 than five years or six years - to create a new聽聽
[280]
what they call Stamp Zero. So you know different聽 immigration stamps have a number depending on what聽聽
[285]
you're applying for. Stamp Zero is for persons聽 of means which includes retirees but it requires聽聽
[292]
fifty thousand euros of income proven fifty聽 thousand euros of income per person per year聽聽
[300]
which is a high threshold especially for a聽 retiree, it doesn't have to be pension or social聽聽
[304]
security income, it could be dividends or rental聽 income or whatever but you have to show
[308]
that聽聽level. But if you do have that level then聽 Ireland is a great place to spend time, the Irish聽聽
[314]
are friendly and talkative and from a retirees聽 perspective, Ireland couldn't be a better place聽聽
[320]
to live other than the weather. (Kathleen)聽 Right, so we as you may know we lived in聽聽
[325]
Ireland for seven years when our children聽 were young when Lief and I were first married聽聽
[329]
and we found the experience kind of maddening聽 at the time because we were there as kind of聽聽
[334]
young people with a new family trying聽 to launch a business, grow a business,聽聽
[339]
and we found the Irish approach to business聽 frustrating because they don't prioritize it.聽聽
[345]
They prioritize life and living and crack - as聽 they refer to it - just having a good time and聽聽
[352]
at retirement of course that can be exactly what聽 you're looking for. (Lief) So stopping in the聽聽
[357]
middle of the day in the middle of the road to聽 have a 20-minute conversation is not something聽聽
[360]
you're looking for when when you're rushing to get聽 to the office when you're running a business.
[364]
But聽for retirees it's perfect. (Kathleen) All right,聽 number three on our list of countries where in聽聽
[370]
fact the language is English so no language study聽 required would be Malta. (Lief) Right, and Malta聽聽
[377]
actually has two official languages English -聽 again it was a former British colony - and Maltese聽聽
[382]
but all legal documents are in English as well as聽 Maltese so you can get by in English no problem.聽聽
[390]
The downside for Malta is that gaining residency聽 isn't as easy as in Belize, but they have four聽聽
[397]
different programs in Malta that you can look at聽 for getting residency. The other thing is that聽聽
[403]
some people we know who have been to Malta aren't聽 happy about is in the Summer time it can be hot聽聽
[410]
so you know above 95 above 100 degrees during the聽 Summer but that's because of its location, it's in聽聽
[415]
the middle of the Mediterranean as the crossroads聽 between Southern Europe and North Africa. So from聽聽
[420]
a scene, the region perspective, Malta is in a聽 very excellent position. (Kathleen) As a base聽聽
[426]
for travel it's really ideal. (Lief) And it has聽 huge history, you know the Knights Templar and聽聽
[434]
all the crusade stuff that went聽 on there lots of architecture聽聽
[438]
and buildings to look at as well. (Kathleen)聽 Okay now those three countries speak English,聽聽
[444]
everybody is going to speak English they may聽 speak something else as well Spanish in Belize,聽聽
[448]
Maltese and Malta but they all speak English.聽 (Lief) Right, but the official language is聽聽
[453]
English. (Kathleen) Here are three countries聽 where the language is not officially English,聽聽
[458]
but there are pockets of these countries or of聽 these specific locations we want to highlight,聽聽
[463]
where English would be spoken by most everyone you聽 would interact. (Lief) You could get by without聽聽
[468]
learning the local language if you didn't want to.聽 (Kathleen) Okay number one on this list we've put聽聽
[472]
Playa del Carmen, Mexico. (Lief) Right, so there's聽 lots of places in Mexico that are tourist spots,聽聽
[477]
Playa del Carmen is one of them. Playa del Carmen聽 has been a tourist spot for so long with the local聽聽
[482]
Mexicans to get jobs in the tourist industry聽 they're learning English from birth basically,聽聽
[487]
so there's a lot of English speakers in the聽 Playa del Carmen area. This is a beach area聽聽
[492]
so lots of tourist amenities as far as restaurants聽 go and other outdoor activities plus in the聽聽
[500]
Yucatan Peninsula where Playa del Carmen is聽 located you have a lot of Mayan history so you聽聽
[505]
have Mayan ruins to visit, fishing off the coast,聽 and any kind of water activity that you can think聽聽
[512]
of. (Kathleen) Right, so it's an ideal Caribbean聽 spot, if your retirement dream is the Caribbean聽聽
[517]
and you don't want to learn another language I聽 would put Playa del Carmen at the top of the list聽聽
[521]
alongside Ambergris Caye, Belize for example. One聽 point I would make about Playa del Carmen, as we聽聽
[527]
suggested it's very touristy it's a聽 big and growing tourist destination聽聽
[532]
which could be a big plus for you or a big minus.聽 So with tourists comes all of the infrastructure,聽聽
[538]
the amenities, the services that tourists want and聽 that can be great. The restaurants, the shopping,聽聽
[543]
the nightlife, and activities you know all kinds聽 of water sports and all of that would be so easy,聽聽
[548]
accessible, and affordable in Playa del Carmen.聽 But at the same time you're going to have the聽聽
[554]
souvenir shops and the tourist touts and people聽 approaching you to see if you want your picture聽聽
[560]
taken on the feet. (Lief) It's not the real Mexico.聽 If you want the Mexico culture and to to be living聽聽
[567]
in Mexico it's not Playa del Carmen. Playa del聽 Carmen is just an extension of Florida, from a聽聽
[572]
beach resort kind of perspective. (Kathleen) Okay,聽 we're staying in Mexico with a second pick for a聽聽
[579]
place where the language isn't officially English聽 but you wouldn't need to learn another one,聽聽
[583]
on the other side of Mexico: Puerto Vallarta.聽 (Lief) Right, in Puerto Vallarta, the same thing,聽聽
[587]
you know 30-40 years of tourism, lots of聽 locals learning English from a young age,聽聽
[592]
lots of tourists, lots of retirees as well in聽 Puerto Vallarta and lots of options in Puerto聽聽
[598]
Vallarta. The town is relatively small but the聽 whole area has expanded in lots of
[605]
development from resorts but also the gated聽 communities. The gated communities for retirees聽聽
[622]
and for expats. So, Puerto Vallarta is not聽 terribly dissimilar from a weather perspective to聽聽
[630]
Southern California which is why a lot of people聽 like it again on the Pacific Coast you don't have聽聽
[633]
the storms as much although Puerto Vallarta can be聽 hit by Pacific typhoons that kick back in and come聽聽
[641]
that way - there was one earlier this year - not聽 a lot of damage but a lot of rain. (Kathleen) So,聽聽
[646]
Puerto Vallarta I would say would be聽 the most developed choice on the Pacific聽聽
[650]
Cast. If you're looking for Pacific Coast聽 living you might be looking down that coast聽聽
[656]
Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, those are all options you might聽聽
[661]
be considering for a Pacific Coast lifestyle with聽 the kind of crashing surf and surf beaches, etc.聽聽
[669]
For the most part your options in say Nicaragua聽 for sure but even in Costa Rica and Panama are聽聽
[674]
going to be less developed. Puerto Vallarta,聽 there's a Walmart in Puerto Vallarta. (Lief)聽聽
[679]
Shopping in Puerto Vallarta is not not unlike聽 shopping in the U.S, if that's what you're聽聽
[683]
looking for. And then Mexico in general has聽 easy residency options and easy access from聽聽
[690]
the U.S as does Belize, so lots of flights going聽 in and out of Cancun to access Playa del Carmen聽聽
[694]
and lots of direct flights into the Puerto聽 Vallarta airport as well. (Kathleen) All right聽聽
[700]
pick number six for where to think about living聽 or retiring overseas if you don't want to learn聽聽
[704]
a new language is Algarve, Portugal which you may聽 not be surprised to hear us include. (Lief) Right,聽聽
[710]
we've talked a lot about Algarve is a great聽 destination for retiring and English being聽聽
[715]
spoken is one reason why. They have a close聽 relationship - Portugal does - with the U.K聽聽
[720]
and a lot of British retirees and expats have聽 moved to The Algarve and over in over the years聽聽
[726]
the Portuguese in that area in particular have聽 learned English so it's you're going to have聽聽
[732]
to pick up some Portuguese probably but you聽 can get by with English for the most part and聽聽
[739]
don't have to be become fluent in Portuguese to聽 live in The Algarve. (Kathleen) And why Algarve聽聽
[745]
in general take a step back beyond language and聽 beautiful beaches, long coastline, great weather聽聽
[752]
although there is a winter but it's very mild and聽 because there is a winter there is seasonality so聽聽
[758]
one thing to consider when shopping The Algarve聽 coast, there are many towns in this part of聽聽
[762]
Portugal and each one has its own charm and flavor聽 and cultural appeals but look at which ones are聽聽
[770]
more affected by seasonality some of them become聽 very quiet in the winter. (Lief) Right, in some of聽聽
[775]
the smaller towns all the restaurants will close聽 so if you like to go to restaurants you want a聽聽
[780]
town that is big enough to support restaurants聽 in the winter so that you can partake in that or聽聽
[786]
be willing to drive to the next town over but聽 the seasonality there can be an issue in the聽聽
[791]
winter time. (Kathleen) and then again we'll make聽 the point about residency which is very easy to聽聽
[797]
establish in Portugal. You have a number of good聽 options depending on your situation. (Lief) Right,聽聽
[801]
two basic options The Golden Visa option which is聽 buying property in Portugal but if your plan is to聽聽
[808]
live there full-time the easier option is just聽 the Self-Sufficiency one where you can show聽聽
[813]
enough income to support yourself and you can聽 get residency in Portugal and that threshold is聽聽
[819]
is around 1200 euros a month is what聽 our attorney there recommends although聽聽
[823]
the official threshold is lower. It's at the聽 discretion of whoever's reviewing the residency聽聽
[828]
application. (Kathleen) And 1200 euros a month聽 is less than the average social security check so聽聽
[832]
it's an example of a place where with the average聽 social security check right now is about 1500 a聽聽
[838]
month so this is a place where if you're receiving聽 you know the average amount in social security and聽聽
[843]
that's all the income you have you could still be聽 looking at Algarve, it's still realistic. Alright,聽聽
[848]
I hope we've given you reason to take lack聽 of language skills off your list of reasons聽聽
[854]
not to think about living or retiring overseas.聽 Thank you for listening we'll be again in touch聽聽
