Some Americans may see smaller tax refunds this year - YouTube

[0]
tax season is around the corner but if
[2]
you receive the child tax credit and
[4]
we're counting on a big refund you may
[6]
be out of luck the child tax credit was
[9]
expanded under president biden's
[10]
american rescue plan but despite the
[12]
bigger credit some parents will take a
[15]
hit the biggest issue how the tax credit
[17]
was paid out to explain more i'd like to
[20]
bring in cbs news money watch reporter
[22]
amir amy peaky amy can you explain to us
[26]
why the way the child tax credit was
[28]
allocated will impact parents tax
[31]
returns
[32]
yeah absolutely nikki so what's really
[34]
interesting and important to understand
[36]
is that before 2021 before the child tax
[40]
credit was expanded parents could claim
[42]
a tax credit of up to two thousand
[44]
dollars per child
[45]
now the american rescue plan bumped that
[47]
up to thirty six hundred dollars for
[49]
kids who are younger than six
[51]
and four kids between six to 17 parents
[54]
get three thousand
[55]
now
[56]
people who got these uh the child tax
[59]
credit will realize that half of that
[60]
amount was paid out in monthly checks
[63]
um between july 2021 through december
[66]
the last check landed december 15th
[68]
and there are 39 million households who
[70]
got these checks the irs estimates that
[73]
something like almost 9 out of every 10
[75]
kids in the us got one of these checks
[78]
why that's important is because the way
[80]
it's structured is the other half of
[82]
that tax credit will be claimed on your
[84]
2021 tax return which will soon people
[88]
start filing those pretty soon
[91]
but remember what i said about the
[92]
original tax credit being two thousand
[94]
dollars well half of the bigger amounts
[96]
is actually less than that it's eighteen
[97]
hundred dollars for younger kids or
[99]
fifteen hundred dollars for kids between
[102]
six and seventeen so take a family with
[104]
two kids who are eight and ten um
[106]
they're going to be able to claim um
[109]
three thousand dollars in tax credits
[111]
through this expanded tax credit on
[113]
their tax return but
[115]
before 2021 they actually claim four
[117]
thousand so that's a loss of one
[119]
thousand dollars in tax credits and i
[122]
also just want to point out that tax
[123]
credits are dollar for dollar reductions
[126]
in the amount you owe the irs they are
[128]
extremely valuable
[130]
and the ctc even more so because it's
[132]
fully refundable meaning you will get
[134]
that money in your refund so the result
[136]
is your refund could be lower because
[139]
you're just going to have a smaller tax
[141]
credit potentially
[143]
amy what are the key points recipients
[145]
of the tax credit need to know when they
[148]
file this year
[149]
yeah absolutely i mean number one it's
[152]
really important to keep your eye out
[153]
for a letter that the irs is going to
[155]
send you this month is coming in january
[158]
and that letter is going to tell you how
[160]
much you received in the advanced
[162]
payments in the second half of 2021. the
[165]
reason why you need that the reason why
[167]
you have to hold on to that is because
[169]
it's going to help you calculate how
[170]
much to claim on your tax refund
[173]
and this is important because we saw
[175]
this last year with the stimulus checks
[176]
people guess they're like i think i got
[179]
this amount they put down the wrong
[181]
amount it doesn't match what the irs has
[183]
on file
[184]
and when that happens your return your
[186]
tax return
[188]
is flagged by the irs for a manual
[190]
review it means a human at the irs has
[192]
to look at your return
[193]
and some people might recall that there
[195]
were tens of millions of tax returns
[197]
that fell into that situation last year
[199]
with some kind of error they were
[200]
flagged and then you end up you could
[203]
end up with weeks or months of delays
[205]
and getting your tax refund so number
[207]
one keep that letter don't guess you
[209]
know look at it make sure you're putting
[211]
the right amount down on your tax return
[213]
um
[214]
and then you know secondly is
[216]
people are tax experts are recommending
[219]
that you file as soon as possible
[221]
because you will get that extra money
[223]
from the child tax credit
[225]
quicker if you do it that way so you
[226]
know a lot of people are still
[228]
struggling they need a little extra
[229]
money so you know if you're in that
[231]
situation definitely file sooner get
[233]
your tax refund as soon as possible and
[235]
get that extra tax credit uh money
[237]
earlier
[238]
i know parents welcome that extra money
[240]
and not every parent will see a smaller
[242]
refund this year who will see more money
[244]
and who will see less
[246]
yeah absolutely i mean
[248]
there are a lot of families who are in
[250]
line to get a bigger tax refund um one
[253]
group of these people are parents who
[256]
had a child in 2021 because the irs
[259]
based its calculations and its estimates
[262]
on who should get this tax tax credit
[265]
on 2020 returns so that means if a child
[267]
was born in 2021 they don't know that
[270]
child exists and you probably didn't get
[272]
those monthly checks so those parents in
[275]
that situation
[277]
will probably get a bigger tax refund
[278]
than they did in previous years because
[280]
they can claim the whole tax credit on
[282]
their return
[283]
the other thing that's important are is
[285]
a new uh or expanded tax credit the
[287]
child independent care tax credit which
[289]
was also expanded through the american
[291]
rescue plan that was bumped up from
[293]
three thousand dollars per child up to
[294]
eight thousand dollars per child um this
[297]
is for working parents who paid for day
[298]
care so they can work or look for work
[301]
and there are some restrictions on this
[302]
is for children who are under 13 for
[304]
example um you can actually pay for a
[307]
relative
[308]
to watch your child and claim this tax
[310]
credit but not a dependent so for
[312]
instance you can't pay an
[314]
older sibling to watch your younger
[315]
child that doesn't work uh doesn't fly
[317]
with the irs but you know those people
[319]
could see definitely more money in their
[321]
tax refund this year
[322]
amy pg thank you for your insight and
[325]
time
[326]
thank you so much
