[6]
Studying at the Royal Conservatoire or the academy聽 as we used to call it was a terrific experience聽聽
[13]
I think the most memorable of all experiences is聽 actually the friendships I made. I have a core聽聽
[22]
group of friends that we stay in contact with. No聽 matter where we are in the world there seems to be聽聽
[27]
a large contingent of Scottish actors in London聽 but across the world as well, in America I聽聽
[32]
spend a bit of time and it's always nice to see聽 familiar faces when you're doing jobs and in comes聽聽
[38]
an actor you've worked with before, but also you know聽 just being here on stage this is kind of where聽聽
[44]
it began for me they gave me the opportunity to聽 to work in the industry within Scotland and the聽聽
[51]
UK. The RCS were very aware of what was going聽 on and we got to build with great relationships聽聽
[59]
with people that were in the industry, from theatre聽 companies to directors to casting agents聽聽
[65]
and agents as well.
[68]
I think the most important聽thing RCS has taught me was that we're always learning and I'm currently working on a show聽at the moment and even today I was challenged聽聽
[79]
by the job in hand and what RCS supplied was聽 the facilities to to try everything from from聽聽
[87]
Lecoq to Stanislavski to to a great library聽 to working in the industry within Scotland and聽聽
[94]
you take what you want from each thing that you聽 study each day and use what what works for you聽聽
[101]
or what works for that particular job in hands聽 so it gives you all the tools and resources that聽聽
[107]
you need to draw upon as a professional actor.聽 It's always been a place as well that I felt I聽聽
[114]
could come back to I feel very welcome here and I聽 don't know I really enjoyed using all the all the聽聽
[123]
secret corners and and rehearsal rooms that RCS聽 has with inside it. I actually auditioned for the聽聽
[131]
RCS twice first time I kind of missed the audition聽 process but they very kindly because I handed them聽聽
[142]
gave me a sort of last-minute audition again it聽 was very bad and I had no idea what I was doing聽聽
[150]
but it certainly instilled in me that I needed聽 to come back that next year and try again and I聽聽
[156]
think if you don't get in in your first attempt聽 I think that's a real test of character and聽聽
[161]
certainly in this industry you know rejection聽 or facing hurdles is something you're going聽聽
[167]
to face every day or so you really need to learn聽 to sort of take on board criticism, productive聽聽
[172]
criticism and work with that so yes it still with聽 me this ability or this work ethic that I needed聽聽
[179]
to come back better and and learn more about my聽 craft so I came back the second time determined聽聽
[185]
I was going to get in and it was you know聽 it was of course nerve-wracking you're getting聽聽
[193]
up in front of people that you know you've never聽 met before and I think there were several rounds聽聽
[199]
of auditions but for me that the part that聽 was really rewarding was actually that there聽聽
[204]
were other other people going through the same聽 situation but actually ex-students or students聽聽
[209]
from years above that were there running the day聽 and you could talk to them and they made you feel聽聽
[215]
very comfortable and they'd also been through聽 the same process that you're going through so聽聽
[220]
it's not as scary as it is it might feel at first聽 and certainly everyone wants you to to do the聽聽
[227]
best you can so no one wants you to fail so yeah聽 it was a it was a really rewarding experience and聽聽
[234]
then one of course when I got offered the place聽 it was just sheer elation from my part
[245]
I'd get as much experience as you can if聽 you're considering going to drama school聽聽
[249]
go visit as many as possible, come to RCS,聽 see they're great facilities and the great聽聽
[255]
teaching staff know about the industry or聽 you're looking to get into and try聽聽
[262]
you know audition for all these places and聽 see what feels right and if you're lucky聽聽
[267]
like me you know you you will just feel a聽 sense of belonging in a certain place and聽聽
[273]
certainly for myself that was a you聽 know the beginning and and enjoy it
