Welcome to Morningstar. I'm Holly Black.聽 With me as Kenneth Lamont. He is an analyst聽聽
[8]
at Morningstar. Hello. Hello, Holly.聽
[11]
So, Kenneth, if we've been talking all things聽 thematic investing this week and some investors聽聽
[16]
might not realize that actually quite an easy聽 way to gain access to trends and themes in聽聽
[21]
the market is through passive funds or ETFs.聽 Why is that such an effective way to do this?聽
[29]
Well, so, when you are investing in ETFs, you are聽 getting all the benefits of passive investing. So,聽聽
[35]
you are getting a transparency; you are聽 getting intra-day trading if you need it,聽聽
[39]
which you may not, and also relatively low聽 cost. So, with thematic funds you must also聽聽
[46]
pay attention to cost because they are not as聽 cheap as the very cheapest passive options. But聽聽
[52]
they are very pleasing and simple and聽 straightforward way of accessing a theme.聽
[58]
So, I think people might usually think of a聽 tracker fund as buying the MSCI World or the S&P聽聽
[64]
500. Obviously, it's a bit different when we are聽 talking thematic. So, what are some of the risks?聽
[71]
Yes. Well, the first risk I suppose is that聽 when you compare with broad market exposures,聽聽
[78]
these funds tend to be very narrow. So, you聽 are not getting the full diversification聽聽
[84]
benefit you would with a broader fund. And this聽 brings with it a higher expected volatility.聽聽
[92]
The second sort of increased risk is that these聽 funds tend to fish lower down the market cap聽聽
[99]
spectrum than the sort of broader market cap聽 alternatives. So, again, you are looking at聽聽
[105]
a higher expected risk there as well.聽
[108]
So, let's look at a couple of funds in a bit聽 more detail. I know you've been looking at聽聽
[112]
the theme of energy transition. So, what聽 are a couple of the funds in that area?聽
[119]
Yes. Well, the first one I'd like聽 to talk about today is the iClima聽聽
[123]
Global Decarbonisation Enablers ETF. And I like聽 this one specifically because I'm sure many people聽聽
[132]
are familiar with the alternative energy ETFs聽 that are available out there on the market. They聽聽
[137]
are very large. They've been very successful. But聽 I like this one because it really targets in on聽聽
[143]
companies that are trying to solve a very聽 specific climate solution, so looking at聽聽
[149]
decarbonizing our world. And from an investment聽 point of view, I like the way that it builds in聽聽
[156]
a tech element which really gives you exposure聽 to a growth profile perhaps you wouldn't get聽聽
[163]
if you were just looking at the broadest聽 alternative energy or energy transition theme.聽
[169]
Okay. And what is another fund you like? Well, so I've been saying for many years now,聽聽
[176]
I think the water is a very interesting聽 theme and the case for investment in water is聽聽
[183]
really compelling if you look closely at it.聽 This is a scarce resource and perhaps in the聽聽
[189]
world it isn't talked about enough and it's聽 something that really has to be dealt with聽聽
[194]
over the coming years. So, if we're really聽 looking at long-term investment opportunities,聽聽
[199]
I still believe that this is a really good space聽 to look at from an investment point of view.聽
[207]
So, with that in mind, I'd like to talk聽 about the L&G Clean Water ETF. And again,聽聽
[216]
much like the iClima Fund, I like this because聽 unlike the larger and more traditional water ETFs,聽聽
[222]
which tend to have a large exposure to utilities,聽 this fund actually really targets in on聽聽
[228]
tech solutions to the global water problem. So,聽 again, it builds on sort of a growth tilt to聽聽
[237]
an exposure which frequently has a value tilt聽 when taken as a broader segment of the market.聽
[245]
So, what kind of stocks might I expect聽 to see in the portfolio for this one?聽
[250]
Yeah. So, water tech, so the Xylem Inc (XYL), for聽 example, a water technology company, and really,聽聽
[261]
companies that really focus in and trying to聽 solve the key water problems that we have.聽
[269]
Kenneth, thank you so much for your聽 time. For Morningstar, I'm Holly Black.
