Today's cardinal lesson is to talk about what is聽 full retirement age for Social Security, and the聽聽
[6]
reason we're talking about such what is really聽 a simple subject that you can look on a chart聽聽
[12]
is after years of doing this type of retirement聽 planning and having people coming in to us,聽聽
[17]
many of them just going on Medicare, a lot of聽 folks are misunderstanding this, that they think聽聽
[23]
full retirement age is 65 and it's not anymore.聽 I mean it was for about 60 years in the Social聽聽
[31]
Security system, from the 30s up until the 80s,聽 it was full retirement age was 65 and, you just,聽聽
[38]
it was the same time that you started Medicare and聽 then most people would start their Social Security聽聽
[43]
check. Now back in the eighties, you know, under聽 Ronald Reagan, they did, where they where they聽聽
[53]
shored up the Social Security system because it聽 was facing some challenges just like it is now,聽聽
[59]
where there's not enough money in the trust聽 fund to cover all the future benefits, so they,聽聽
[64]
what they proposed was a moving from 65 to 67,聽 and they phased it in over like 35 or 40 years,聽聽
[74]
and so we're right in the middle of that right聽 now. So the people born actually before 1943,聽聽
[82]
it was something we don't really need to worry聽 about them, but from the 1943 to 1954 birthdays,聽聽
[88]
which is 10 years of birthdays, the retirement聽 full retirement age was 66, and then 1955's,聽聽
[97]
which my co-host on the radio show that's his聽 year of birth, 66 and two months. Now you don't聽聽
[104]
really need to spend a lot of time on this,聽 is if you get your Social Security statement,聽聽
[109]
right up on the top of it it's gonna say what聽 your full retirement age is, you know mine聽聽
[114]
born in 1958, it's 66 and eight months, so I just聽 want to clear that up for a lot of folks that are聽聽
[123]
coming up on that is you can start your Social聽 Security really as early as 62, so even before聽聽
[131]
65. You can delay it as long as 70, but this age,聽 or this point in time, still matters. There's聽聽
[139]
actually 96 different dates for each person, for聽 you, of when you can start your Social Security,聽聽
[145]
starting with your 62nd birthday and ending聽 with your 70th birthday. Now the reason that聽聽
[150]
this date matters is it is your full retirement聽 age, and that means that you can start your check聽聽
[157]
and you're going to get your full benefit, and聽 that is right on your Social Security, at least聽聽
[161]
an estimate, on your Social Security statement it聽 says this is full benefit at full retirement age.聽聽
[167]
If you started earlier than that date, you got聽 a couple of problems with that. Number one,聽聽
[172]
you're going to get less and you're going to get聽 less for life, so if you started early. The second聽聽
[178]
thing is if you earn money from a job before聽 full retirement age, taking Social Security,聽聽
[184]
you're going to have to give some of it back,聽 that's a kind of a complicated formula, you really聽聽
[188]
want to avoid that. If you wait till this age to聽 start it and you start it exactly at this age,聽聽
[195]
you're going to get the full benefit and you聽 won't have, you can make all the money you聽聽
[198]
want at a job, so you can do this still working,聽 or you can delay out to 70, or approaching 70,聽聽
[205]
and then you're going to get more and you're聽 going to get more for life. So a lot of folks are聽聽
[210]
working longer and they're delaying their Social聽 Security so they'll get more, or their surviving聽聽
[216]
spouse will get more, for the rest of their life,聽 so this is an important thing as a baseline,聽聽
[224]
doesn't mean you ought to start your Social聽 Security at this point, it's just you need to聽聽
[228]
know what this date is, we need to know what this聽 date is if we're doing financial planning for you.聽聽
[233]
I make reference to all this in my books, I'm聽 Hans Scheil and I thank you for listening.
