What Is The Meaning Of Influence? - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
What is the meaning of influence
in real terms? In this video,
[4]
I'm going to define influence
and give you three quick tips
[8]
that you can put into practice
to increase your influence. Here
[12]
we go. Hi, my name is Drew and
I've had the opportunity to
[19]
learn from and connect with
highly influential people like
[23]
Dr. Chow Dini, John Maxwell and
Palmer nilly just to name a few.
[26]
And I want to take what I've
learned from them and share it
[29]
with you. I really believe that
if you have something to say,
[32]
something to sell or something
big to do, you've got to
[35]
increase your influence. And
that's what this channel is for.
[38]
Tim Elmore, who runs a fantastic
organization, called growing
[42]
leaders has had the opportunity
to train highly influential
[46]
organizations like the Kansas
City Royals, and the Alabama
[50]
Crimson Tide athletic
department. And I got to catch
[53]
up with him at Pepperdine
University where he was training
[56]
their athletic department, I
also got to have coffee with him
[59]
afterwards. But Tim is is noted
as saying that every one of us
[64]
even the most introverted of us
will influence over 10,000
[68]
people in our lifetime. Just
think about that. If you think
[72]
about your influence, if you are
a little bit extroverted, you
[75]
might run into two or three
people meet two or three people
[78]
a day and have the opportunity
to influence them over a
[81]
lifetime. That's anywhere from
45 to 65,000 people that you
[86]
will influence over your
lifetime. So this idea this
[89]
concept of influence is a big
deal. John Maxwell says that
[94]
leadership is influence nothing
more, nothing less. I love that
[98]
quote. But it does leave a
question, what is influence? And
[102]
I like to say success is what
everybody wants. But influence
[106]
is what everyone needs. Why is
that? I like to say increase
[111]
your influence, realize your
dream. What does it mean to have
[115]
influence over someone or
something, it means that you
[118]
have power over the outcome of a
certain situation, or how a
[123]
person responds to a certain
situation, think of it this way,
[126]
we have something called a DUI
driving under the influence if
[130]
you are under the influence of
alcohol, that means that your
[133]
responses, your decisions in a
certain situation are going to
[138]
be altered because of that
alcohol. Well, the same thing is
[141]
true with human influence with
outside influences. It changes
[145]
how we respond and how we react
to certain situations. So let me
[149]
let me give a quick story, a
funny story. You can see on the
[152]
screen now a picture of my
sister myself, we were somewhere
[154]
around the ages of three and
five. She's my older sister,
[157]
highly influential in my life.
We're muddy right here and
[161]
taking a bath. But the backstory
with this is that we were
[164]
playing in the backyard, and we
got a hold of the hose. And we
[167]
were making mud and having a
good time. And very quickly, my
[170]
mom found out what we were
doing. And she came outside
[173]
said, hey, no more playing with
the hose. Let's stop that. Okay,
[177]
we said okay, and kids are very
literal. So we were told we
[180]
can't play with the hose
anymore. But we weren't told
[182]
that we couldn't make any more
mud. And so my sister, looking
[186]
at the situation, recognizing
she has influence over me, she
[190]
can tell me to do something, and
I'll do it recognizing the
[192]
resources at our disposal. She
says, Hey, little brother, I
[195]
know that you can pretty much
pee at any time. So what I want
[199]
you to do is pee in the dirt
here and we can continue to play
[201]
you want to continue to play I
said yes, I want to continue to
[203]
play. And so she influenced me
to pee in the dirt. And we
[209]
continue to have a great time.
Now the Latin word for influence
[213]
is in flow. Now I was in flow
that day in more than one way,
[217]
okay. But the idea of being in
flow is that just like a bunch
[222]
of streams and a river, the
streams come in and the more
[225]
dominant river, they flow into
that and they don't find it.
[228]
They don't. They there's no
resistance there. They come in
[232]
flow with that larger body of
water. The same thing is true
[236]
with you and me. We want to get
people in flow with us. We don't
[241]
want them to fight we don't want
them to resist. We don't want
[243]
them to push back against it. We
want to be in flow. And just
[247]
like my sister that day, she had
influence over me I was in flow
[251]
with her why? Because she was
able to convince me that this
[254]
was something that I would
benefit from and recognize that
[257]
I had the resources to
accomplish what we both wanted
[261]
and she influenced me she got me
in flow with her desired
[265]
outcome. So let me give you
three tips on how you can
[269]
increase your influence.
Alright, number one, solve
[272]
problems. If
[273]
you are a problem solver. You
will increase your influence
[276]
with your boss with a client
with whoever is around you don't
[279]
be a problem pointer. Be a
problem solver solve problems
[284]
and you will increase your
influence number two seek to
[288]
understand so often when we're
communicating with someone we're
[291]
talking to someone we're having
a conversation with a co worker
[293]
with a peer with a boss with a
client. We are seeking to
[298]
respond we want we Want to hear
what they're saying? So we can
[301]
respond and we can give the
right response or give the
[304]
objection or whatever it is, or
it's look smart or sound
[306]
smarter, whatever the case may
be, but instead of seeking to
[310]
respond, seek to understand,
what are they saying? What are
[314]
they communicating? What are
they communicating non verbally?
[316]
Where are they communicating
beyond just the words that are
[319]
coming out of their mouth. And
let me understand this, process
[322]
this and then give a thoughtful
response and seek to understand
[326]
and number three, the third way
that you can quickly and easily
[329]
increase your influence is by
simply having a positive
[333]
attitude. People enjoy being
around people that are positive,
[337]
they want to be random, it's
life. Giving you are you are
[340]
putting out positive energy to
people that you interact with,
[344]
that you're in the workplace
with, that you see on a regular
[348]
basis. A positive attitude will
increase your influence in the
[352]
workplace, with your clients,
with your family member with
[356]
your friends, you're just more
fun to be around. Thank you so
[359]
much. Those are three easy ways
that you can increase your
