You see the thing is that we have made
[4]
arrangements for our stay at the airport
[8]
that we should make for our destination.
[11]
We have started to live at the railway
[14]
station the way we should be living at
[17]
our destination. Are you getting me?
[21]
This is our problem.
[24]
When a car costing two million can do the job
[27]
for us and we go and buy a car worth
[31]
ten million. The result is we have to
[33]
maintain so many things.
[35]
Our energy, our time, and occupation
[40]
of our minds. We should try to maintain
[45]
ourselves at the basic and simple level.
[51]
And if Allah SWT has given you money
[54]
then you can do more.
[57]
Let me ask you a question here.
[59]
In our society the condition of the
[62]
Muslim Ummah in every respect
[65]
and when I say Muslim ummah then I am
[68]
referring to the situation regarding
[70]
faith and morality. And secondly, I refer
[73]
to their situation regarding knowledge.
[76]
And I don't mean their financial position
[79]
Our real problem is
[80]
not our financial weakness.
[83]
Our real problem is not that we don't have
[86]
big airliners and we don't have the latest
[89]
technology. Our real problem is
[92]
the weakness of our faith and morals.
[95]
When we see this, then we should
[98]
understand that Allah has given me
[101]
resources so that I can
[103]
return those for the cause. I have to
[107]
return those resources for the
[109]
bigger cause. So if you have resources
[112]
then you should purchase a car for
[114]
two million and spend eight million
[117]
for the cause.
[118]
But we are lacking this spirit right now.
[120]
What is actually happening is that our
[123]
resources and whatever we earn and
[125]
whatever we have, the major portion is
[127]
spent on ourselves. Whatever a family
[130]
earns, the major portion of that is spent
[133]
on themselves and they give charity from
[137]
the remaining resources. May Allah grant
[139]
us the spirit that we spend on charity
[142]
first and then see what to do with
[144]
the rest. I am saying this about those
[147]
who are greatly blessed by Allah SWT.
[150]
They should show this spirit. So I think
[154]
it is permissible for you to purchase
[157]
a car for ten million or even a car
[159]
worth fifty million. It is permissible for
[162]
you as your income is legal and you are
[164]
buying a car. But as a result of buying
[167]
such an expensive car and maintaining it
[171]
will have its ecological cost and it will
[175]
result in the change of balance between
[178]
so many things in your life. This also
[184]
sets new trends in society. So we should
[188]
calculate these disadvantages as well.
[193]
Please understand one more thing, that to
[197]
assess any action in the light of
[203]
Islamic law is only one aspect. When you
[208]
say that something is Shariah-compliant,
[212]
it refers to only one aspect.
[214]
Now as the question has come up, I will
[217]
ask you an even more basic question.
[220]
Have you seen car financing
[224]
advertisements? You all must have seen
[227]
those because there is such a big advert in
[232]
the paper that you cannot miss it.
[234]
And we are such weak human beings that
[237]
although we do not intend to buy a car
[239]
but still, we look at the advertisement for a while.
[242]
Let us see what is there in this ad and
[244]
it makes us feel happy.
[247]
So after seeing a car financing advertisement from
[249]
Standard Chartered, you say this is not
[252]
permissible as there is interest and I will
[257]
not take it. After a few days another advertisement
[262]
appears which is from an Islamic Bank
[264]
and offers you to buy the car worth
[273]
ten million in Halal way. The Ad is
[280]
Shariah-compliant and has a picture of
[283]
beads and a minaret of a masjid and
[287]
prayer cap. The words Subhanallah and
[290]
Ma Sha Allah appear alongside in Arabic
[293]
style. And it is full of all the images
[299]
of Islamic design. You feel that following
[305]
and responding to this ad will bring you
[309]
closer to Allah SWT.
[313]
This is the feeling this Ad is giving.
[316]
But what does it actually do to me?
[322]
The problem with me is that my income
[328]
does not allow me to make such a big jump.
[334]
But since it is a Shariah-compliant Ad so
[337]
I don't even think whether I should buy it
[341]
or not. So I cross my limits and stretch
[344]
myself and purchase that car. And then in
[349]
order pay the instalments I work hard.
[353]
I sacrifice the time of my wife and
[358]
children. Then one day I tell my wife that
[361]
you have received higher education and
[364]
done MSc but what is the benefit? I want
[366]
that you should get some benefit of this
[369]
education. And the only way you can
[371]
benefit is by going out and finding a job.
[374]
The only benefit of education is
[376]
to earn some money.
[377]
And you are just sitting at
[379]
home doing nothing. Go and find some job.
[381]
So to pay out that loan the whole balance
[384]
of the house is out.
[386]
Now when my children come home, their mom
[390]
is not available as she is out seeking
[394]
some benefit. And I am also not available
[396]
as I am overworked and doing extra
[399]
projects and busy achieving extra targets
[402]
so that I am able to pay off that car
[405]
I have purchased.
[407]
All these problems occur because I looked at it
[409]
only from one angle whether it is
[412]
Shariah-compliant or not. But I did not
[414]
see it in relation to the purpose of
[416]
my life and how it is related to the
[418]
purpose of my life.
[420]
We worry too much for adding
[423]
convenience to our lives and not so much
[425]
about adding the purpose to our lives.
[428]
To add convenience is a different thing.
[431]
Adding luxury is entirely a different
[433]
thing and making your life meaningful is
[436]
an entirely different ball game.
[439]
Making your life convenient and luxurious
[441]
and adding comforts and having the latest
[450]
luxuries - that is an entirely different thing. These are big questions.
[458]
I think that if Allah SWT has blessed
[461]
someone, then he should spend on himself
[465]
reasonably. I am not saying that he should
[467]
not wear good clothes or live in a good
[470]
house. He can do all reasonably good
[473]
things but he should not get into
[475]
the cycle of consumerism. He should not be
[478]
worried about the latest trends. He should
[482]
make sure that he performs his roles
[485]
meaningfully and meaningfulness should be
[490]
the most important thing in my life.
[494]
And to ensure that I should have a laptop
[497]
and a good one, because if I buy a
[500]
low quality one, then every two months I will
[503]
have to get it repaired which I cannot do.
[506]
So I want to get a good laptop so that
[508]
I can use it for the next five years or
[511]
till the end. I should have a good pair of
[515]
shoes as I can afford it. But I should not
[522]
change those shoes only because those are
[526]
old. Problem with us that we have started
[529]
throwing away things only because those
[532]
are old. An old item and bad item are two
[535]
different things. I should use even
[538]
eight years old shoes because those are
[541]
still perfect. Right now the problem is
[544]
that we give old shoes in charity thinking
[547]
we have done something good and buy a new
[549]
pair of Adidas thinking we have done the
[552]
right thing. If you really want a pair of
[555]
Adidas, do buy it but for giving as
[557]
charity and feel happy with the old Adidas
[560]
as you will feel happy with the new ones.
[563]
We should create this spirit in ourselves.
[565]
If you see a friend who works very hard
[568]
and if I give him a new pair of shoes he
[570]
will love it and will work with more
[573]
dedication. He is doing some good work. So
[576]
if he takes steps in the right direction
[578]
wearing my shoes it will be good. So give
[581]
him a new pair of shoes and keep the old
[584]
shoes for yourself. We have been unable to
[586]
do that. Every few days we want a new car
[589]
and a new mobile. Do you know that
[595]
cobalt is used in the batteries of your
[597]
mobile phones? You know that the back up
[601]
of your battery is improving and
[603]
the battery can last for five days and
[607]
does not drain out.
[609]
You cannot imagine for this cobalt what we
[614]
have done to the earth. How we have taken
[617]
out cobalt and what has happened to the
[621]
hands taking it out. People have lost
[628]
their hands and their eyes just to make
[632]
the latest mobiles available to us.
[636]
Whole tribes have been devastated. I am
[640]
telling you this and the media will never
[644]
show these things. Media will only show
[647]
the content which will increase your
[649]
consumerism and love of things. But we
[653]
have to think about this.
[654]
We have made it compulsory on ourselves
[657]
that for Eid we have to get new clothes.
[660]
In fact, the clothes you have are fine
[662]
and you do not need new clothes. You
[664]
should be satisfied. Is it a must that
[667]
you should wear new clothes on Eid?
[669]
We were advised to wear your best clothes
[673]
on Eid and not new clothes. This is our
[676]
twenty-first century interpretation that
[679]
we should wear new clothes on Eid. We were
[682]
told to wear the best dress we have on Eid
[687]
and this is all that is expected from you.
[694]
But you go to a brand store and spend
[698]
so much. We have to understand this.
[703]
As a result of this, our nation is unable
[707]
to do anything great. Right now the
[711]
achievement of the Ummah is to buy Nikes
[714]
and BMWs and shift from one house to
[716]
to another house.
[718]
Ummah is constantly busy in shifting from
[721]
a four hundred yard house to a thousand
[724]
Sq. yard house. Or shift from a two Kanal
[726]
house to an eight Kanal house. The energy
[730]
of the Ummah is spent only on these
[732]
activities. New clothes, new car, and new
[735]
mobile and that is all. There is no
[738]
meaning in life. I am really sorry if I
[742]
have disappointed you by such
[746]
a conversation. I don't know how harsh
[749]
I have been but I think that if I don't
[752]
talk about these things, I will be
[754]
accountable before Allah. I think and pray
[756]
that the ummah develops a narrative to
[759]
challenge and resist consumerism and
[762]
counter it. At least we should accept
[766]
and acknowledge the concern, that it was not
[769]
necessary to purchase so much in life as
[773]
I have done. At least each one of us
[776]
should think that whatever he has
[778]
purchased alas, he did not buy so much as
[781]
it was not necessary.
[784]
Let me share one more thing. We don't feel
[787]
the need for knowledge, that is required
[792]
for living a life. Whereas the amount of money
[796]
required for life is always insufficient
[800]
in our eyes. Even if we have twenty times
[802]
more money than necessary for life, we will
[805]
think it is not enough. But if we acquire
[807]
only one tenth of the knowledge required
[810]
for living a meaningful life, we think
[813]
it is too much. This is how we have been
[815]
oriented by society. And the whole model
[818]
of capitalism is behind this.
