Why Do Ancient Temples Have Moats? - YouTube

[0]
hey guys
[1]
today i'm gonna show you
[3]
why many ancient temples have
[7]
moats around them you can take angkor
[9]
wat which is the largest hindu temple in
[12]
the world and it is completely
[15]
surrounded by water on all four sides
[18]
you can take the great brisbane temple
[21]
in tanjavur and you can see a water body
[24]
around it too
[26]
many ancient temples are designed this
[28]
way but there should be a serious
[31]
question
[32]
popping in your mind right now
[36]
a moat by definition is a defense
[40]
mechanism it protects people inside it
[44]
if you look at wikipedia it says
[47]
historically to provide a structure with
[50]
a preliminary
[51]
line of defense
[53]
modes are typically used in castles to
[57]
prevent enemies from attacking them
[60]
easily
[61]
but these are temples these are places
[65]
of worship not castles or forts
[68]
kings and even common people don't live
[72]
inside these temples so
[75]
why were these moats necessary
[78]
archaeologists and historians have
[80]
cracked this a long time ago let's look
[84]
under the plan section of angkor wat in
[87]
wikipedia the temple is a representation
[91]
of mount meru the home of gods according
[94]
to hindu mythology the central quincunx
[97]
of towers symbolizes the five peaks of
[100]
the mountain and the walls and moat
[103]
symbolize the surrounding mountain
[106]
ranges
[108]
and ocean
[110]
so it clearly states that the moat was
[113]
just a representation of the sea
[116]
surrounding the mythical mountain called
[119]
meru so you can see that ancient hindus
[123]
were making these elaborate structures
[126]
in fact my long structures just to mimic
[130]
an imaginary mountain called meru and if
[134]
you're a hindu you know that lord vishnu
[137]
will always sleep
[139]
in the middle of the sea of milk so the
[143]
moat must have been an absolute
[145]
requirement there is even a huge carving
[148]
of the churning of the sea of milk
[151]
in angkor wat temple
[154]
you see this is how the ancient builders
[157]
really thought
[158]
they had deep superstitious beliefs and
[162]
to make these myths into reality to make
[166]
their fantasies real they went through
[170]
great pains
[171]
this is why they built this massive moat
[175]
to ensure that lord visnu can reside
[179]
in the sea of milk
[182]
if you believe this theory
[184]
you belong to the mainstream people
[187]
these kinds of theories are repeatedly
[189]
mentioned in history books wikipedia
[193]
and tv programs it sounds almost
[196]
realistic but in reality it actually
[200]
demeans
[201]
ancient builders
[203]
why
[204]
because it assumes that whoever built
[208]
this gigantic moat
[210]
did not build it for a scientific reason
[215]
the fact is whoever built the largest
[219]
religious structure in the world would
[221]
have been anything but unscientific
[225]
of course nobody asks
[227]
if temples dedicated to lord vishnu
[230]
needed moats to symbolize the sea of
[232]
milk
[233]
why do temples dedicated to lord siva
[237]
like the brahmiswara temple
[239]
also have modes around them
[242]
what about coker pyramid this is also an
[246]
ancient hindu pyramid
[248]
why was that designed with a moat
[251]
today i'm going to demonstrate
[254]
why these modes were actually built to
[258]
do this i've come to the ancient site of
[260]
mahabalipuram it's a fascinating
[262]
location with many ancient temples
[265]
but the secret
[267]
does not lie in the temples the secret
[270]
lies
[271]
in the beach
[274]
now where will this rod stand firmly if
[278]
i take this rod and stick it in this
[280]
sand
[281]
that does not have any moisture
[284]
will it stand firmly here
[286]
or if i take this rod and if i walk over
[290]
here
[291]
and stick it in this sand
[293]
that has a lot of moisture will it stand
[296]
firmly
[298]
in this sand
[299]
where do you think
[301]
the rod will stand firmly
[304]
did you just have an aha moment it's
[308]
like magic isn't it once i reveal the
[311]
secret it sounds so obvious
[314]
this is what ancient wisdom
[317]
really is the answer
[320]
is right in front of your eyes hiding in
[323]
plain sight
[324]
all the time but the paradox is to
[328]
understand the science behind ancient
[331]
wisdom
[332]
first you have to believe
[334]
that ancient builders did everything for
[338]
a scientific reason you have to remove
[342]
the prejudice in your mind that ancient
[345]
temples were built by a bunch of
[347]
superstitious people who just built
[350]
things for just random rituals
[353]
but this is not a conscious thought it
[356]
is a deep-rooted subconscious belief
[359]
that is subliminally enforced not only
[362]
by history books but by the society
[365]
itself
[367]
the reason for constructing a moat a
[370]
water body near the temple or around the
[373]
temple is that some types of soil
[376]
require constant moisture to hold
[380]
structures firmly in fact in the case of
[383]
prahudi surah temple archaeologists have
[385]
even found inscriptions that ancient
[388]
builders did extensive soil tests before
[392]
starting the construction
[394]
so they needed the water to provide
[397]
moisture to the soil
[399]
today
[401]
architects and civil engineers
[403]
have a separate term for this they call
[406]
it omc
[408]
optimum moisture content now think about
[412]
this why were many ancient temples built
[416]
with their own water tanks
[419]
there are huge reservoirs in ancient
[422]
temples some of them are extremely
[425]
ornate and beautiful history books and
[428]
wikipedia will make superficial claims
[431]
that water is very important for hindu
[435]
rituals
[436]
spiritual cleansing etc
[439]
but
[440]
ancient architects killed two birds with
[443]
one stone
[445]
by setting up these temple tanks
[448]
on one hand they made sure
[451]
water was not stagnating too much around
[454]
the main structures which can also make
[456]
the temple weak
[458]
they made sure the rain water falling on
[462]
the structures will not stagnate there
[464]
but be channeled into the tank on the
[468]
other hand the temple tank will
[470]
continuously but slowly keep on
[474]
moisturizing the soil
[476]
keeping the temple's base
[479]
firm
[480]
in fact the builders of angkor wat went
[483]
through enormous pains to channel water
[487]
from a far distant place
[490]
to fill this moat around the temple when
[493]
europeans first explored ancient hindu
[497]
temples they were surprised to see
[499]
these water bodies around them
[502]
but
[503]
you have to understand
[504]
they could only compare them with what
[507]
they had in europe many european castles
[511]
had modes that were created for defense
[515]
they lived in a constant state of war
[518]
actually some entire cities were set up
[521]
with modes so they just theorized that
[524]
these hindu temples were also built with
[529]
protective modes
[531]
until today no english word has been
[534]
coined for these water bodies around
[538]
these temples because archaeologists
[540]
never made an effort to understand why
[544]
they were created these are not moats at
[546]
all they were not created for defense
[550]
purposes but were created to provide a
[554]
firm soil
[555]
for the temple to last long but they
[559]
should coin a new word for this i hope
