[2]
Good morning Sir, Ready to get聽
up? Let me get your feet up.
[10]
How are you doing today?
[13]
Long-term care is expensive and can wipe you out聽
financially and emotionally in this video you聽聽
[20]
will learn why your family needs you to consider聽
long-term care and the planning that goes with it聽聽
[31]
welcome to another episode聽
of the Financial Fast Lane聽聽
[35]
in this channel we discuss retirement planning聽
topics specifically for those age 50 and over聽聽
[41]
I am the author of the Holistic Retirement聽
Planning Revolution and today we are talking聽聽
[48]
about long-term care now to introduce this topic聽
I'm going to start with a three-minute video clip,聽聽
[54]
it's a touching video with an important message,聽
it's actually a TV commercial that was produced聽聽
[60]
by Gillette razors but really worth watching and聽
then I will discuss what we can learn from it.
[69]
Good morning sir ready to get聽
up let me get your feet up
[77]
How you doing today? okay good morning. I remember聽
uh always looking at my dad's arms like when I聽聽
[84]
was like eight nine ten years old he had arms聽
like Popeye he was a tugboat captain and I so聽聽
[91]
admired his physique and now it's a different聽
story you know and that's just the way it is.
[107]
So my dad had a stroke and now he can't get around聽
he can't walk and he needs me to help him out聽聽
[116]
and my son Luke and I have been doing it聽
and uh I'd do anything anything for him
[126]
I can give you a really good mohawk聽聽
[130]
you look like a punk rocker there's a definite聽
role reversal that happens i have to wake him聽聽
[136]
up in the morning and take care of him聽
and groom and shave him and shower him聽聽
[142]
it's actually an honor to do that for your聽
father because he did it for me when i was a kid聽聽
[151]
my dad's got the greatest face his squishy聽
face is just amazing he's sort of thin skin聽聽
[156]
that i don't want to cut it at all so i聽
got to be careful with that with that face聽聽
[162]
he'll just say do this do that you got聽
to make sure that you shave my neck down聽聽
[166]
got to do my my lips up it was really聽
particular about his side burns聽聽
[171]
that's where your sideburns start i'm not聽
gonna touch your sideburns okay good okay聽聽
[180]
how am i doing so far dad okay you know it takes聽
me like a half an hour to shave my father because聽聽
[186]
i have to be so careful intently without raising聽
okay well there we go okay good i love that face聽聽
[199]
hi i'm uh i'm one of the lucky ones a lot of my聽
my my friends my age did not have their dads and i聽聽
[208]
still have my dad he always says to me he looks up聽
at me after i pour love on him for the whole day聽聽
[217]
and he says i don't know what i did聽
to deserve you and i say dad i got you
[228]
i got you daddy聽聽
[233]
i think you would agree that that is a touching聽
video and you can certainly feel the love of聽聽
[240]
between the son and the father now that聽
situation if we really think about it聽聽
[248]
is it's really a remarkable scenario but it's it's聽
very unpractical for many people right the amount聽聽
[255]
of time required to take care of someone like聽
that full-time most people are not in a position聽聽
[262]
or children are not in a position to leave work聽
and and take care of of an aging parent and so聽聽
[273]
there's a lot of things that need to be considered聽
the impact on your children the the financial聽聽
[279]
impact on either spouse or your children the whole聽
family so there are many things a myriad of issues聽聽
[287]
to consider and maybe you have some personal聽
experience or know someone who has had experience聽聽
[293]
with long-term care needs of a family member聽
and if it's not if there's not a good plan it聽聽
[300]
can really create a lot of problem emotionally and聽
financially long-term care when these three words聽聽
[309]
are spoken you know what comes to mind many people聽
associate long-term care with a nursing home聽聽
[316]
and in fact long-term care has little to do with聽
nursing homes so some other words that are used聽聽
[323]
to define long-term care would be extended care聽
assisted living custodial care first you want to聽聽
[332]
understand the differences between acute illness聽
and chronic illness acute impairment results from聽聽
[339]
a sudden event such as a heart attack aneurysm聽
a broken hip or a stroke in a lot of cases you聽聽
[346]
know the condition is if it's properly treated an聽
an individual can make a you know a full recovery聽聽
[353]
but on the other hand chronic impairment is聽
a condition that cannot be cured or fixed and聽聽
[360]
needs to be managed most extended care events are聽
driven by chronic illness or chronic impairments聽聽
[368]
that limit a person's ability to get through聽
the most basic daily routines we call these聽聽
[374]
the activities of daily living or adls so the six聽
physical adls would include you know transferring聽聽
[385]
your ability to walk get up get out of bed聽
toileting bathing dressing eating incontinence聽聽
[394]
so in addition to physical limitations it could be聽
cognitive such as you know dementia or alzheimer's聽聽
[401]
so long-term care is a subject that is on聽
top of mind of many people in america today聽聽
[406]
well it may be something you're considering聽
for yourselves another reason to consider it聽聽
[411]
is for the benefit of your family it is common聽
for people to mistakenly think that they're聽聽
[417]
already covered in you know for a related聽
long-term care event you know through medicare聽聽
[424]
or through medicare supplements but they are not聽
medicare does not cover custodial care now there聽聽
[431]
is medicaid but you want to understand some things聽
about medicaid medicaid is not free if you have聽聽
[437]
qualified funds or low-cost based assets there聽
is a serious tax considerations medicaid pays聽聽
[444]
little or nothing for home care which is what most聽
people want or adult daycare or assisted living聽聽
[452]
medicaid is of no help in protecting emotional聽
and physical well-being of the caregivers聽聽
[457]
for all the years that you are at home before聽
you might be required to go to a nursing home so聽聽
[464]
medicaid is only going to cover nursing home when聽
you've spent down all of your almost all of your聽聽
[469]
assets providing care to chronically ill people聽
often makes the healthy caregivers chronically ill聽聽
[477]
there are a variety of ways available and to聽
possibly remove this potential burden from聽聽
[482]
your family a long-term care plan doesn't mean聽
that your family is not willing to care for you聽聽
[489]
it's really just the opposite having a good聽
plan allows your family to supervise and to聽聽
[495]
make sure that you have good care but not聽
necessarily provide all the daily care聽聽
[500]
traditional long-term care insurance is kind聽
is a isn't what we call use it or lose it聽聽
[507]
you pay for premiums for something聽
that you hope you never have to use聽聽
[511]
it's really outdated um compared to some of聽
the newer types of long-term care coverage聽聽
[517]
that are really very powerful and flexible these聽
newer type of long-term care plans we refer to聽聽
[525]
them as asset-based long-term care policies or聽
hybrid policies and they offer a provision that's聽聽
[533]
called a live die or quit so the older type of聽
long-term care offers only a live provision so聽聽
[541]
if the customer lived and required long-term care聽
the policy covered the cost but there are no die聽聽
[549]
or quit provisions with the asset-based long-term聽
care there is a diet provision so if you don't聽聽
[555]
end up needing the or requiring long-term care聽
then your beneficiaries receive an inheritance聽聽
[562]
the asset-based long-term care also offers a quit聽
provision if a customer chooses to quit the policy聽聽
[569]
you can actually receive all or part of your money聽
back so in this way the asset-based long-term care聽聽
[576]
offers the customer you know protection聽
as well as a lot of flexibility聽聽
[582]
so these types of plans have been a big聽
improvement over the older long-term care plans聽聽
[588]
we don't like to think about it you know but as聽
we age we become increasingly frail statistically聽聽
[595]
70 of us will need some form of long-term聽
care for either physical or cognitive reasons聽聽
[602]
ignoring the risks and rolling the dice聽聽
[606]
can have serious consequences to not just聽
you but to your family and loved ones聽聽
[611]
both financially and emotionally i hope you found聽
this information beneficial i have a free download聽聽
[619]
in the description below with more information聽
with some statistics and that you might want聽聽
[625]
to check out i want to thank you very much and聽
i look forward to seeing you in the next video
