alright let's dive in so as a cpa i've worked聽 with countless individuals and businesses in聽聽
[70]
preparing their annual tax returns this also means聽 i have reviewed their previously filed tax returns聽聽
[76]
and there are some very specific situations when聽 filing an amended return is necessary in today's聽聽
[82]
video i'll be going over when you should聽 file an amended tax return when you should聽聽
[87]
not file an amended tax return and five tips for聽 filing an amended tax return starting first with聽聽
[94]
when to file an amended tax return the irs聽 states you should file an amended tax return聽聽
[100]
if you entered your income incorrectly you did聽 not claim credits you're eligible for you claim聽聽
[105]
deductions incorrectly or you claim the wrong聽 filing status these are very broad reasons to聽聽
[111]
file an amended tax return but let's consider聽 some specific examples of what these scenarios聽聽
[117]
look like entering your income incorrectly聽 could mean that you received a w-2 or 1099聽聽
[123]
after you already filed your tax return sometimes聽 employers and businesses are late with providing聽聽
[128]
workers with their w-2s and 1099s in which case聽 the worker probably already filed their tax return聽聽
[135]
without this information and incorrectly reported聽 their income or sometimes companies make mistakes聽聽
[141]
on the w-2 or 1099 that they file and have to聽 re-issue a corrected one making it necessary for聽聽
[147]
you to file an amended tax return correcting聽 the income you reported or maybe you started聽聽
[153]
a side gig and had no idea that you had to聽 report the extra income on your tax return you聽聽
[159]
would need to file an amended return and include聽 a schedule c to deduct your related expenses all聽聽
[165]
right so maybe your tax return error is聽 not related to income and is related to聽聽
[170]
not claiming credits you're eligible for this one聽 is a biggie because this could mean the irs owes聽聽
[176]
you a lot of money and the irs is definitely not聽 going to inform you of those types of mistakes聽聽
[182]
so pay attention to this one and amend if any聽 of these scenarios apply to you if someone else聽聽
[188]
wrongly claimed your child on their tax return聽 this is a common mistake perhaps your ex-spouse聽聽
[195]
claimed the child but the child did not live聽 with them for more than half the year both聽聽
[199]
of you would need to follow an amended return so聽 the rightful spouse can claim the child or maybe聽聽
[205]
you're a student and are eligible for the american聽 opportunity tax credit or lifetime learning credit聽聽
[211]
both of which are tax credits for qualified聽 education expenses and in some cases could聽聽
[217]
result in a tax refund now not claiming credits聽 correctly is one thing but incorrectly claiming聽聽
[223]
deductions is another this might be the case when聽 you're filing your schedule c business return聽聽
[228]
you might have forgotten to include business聽 expenses that you paid for with your personal聽聽
[233]
card for example or you realize that you did use聽 a portion of your home for business purposes and聽聽
[240]
are eligible for the home office deduction i've聽 personally seen business owners get back over five聽聽
[245]
thousand dollars by filing an amended return聽 to include more business deductions than what聽聽
[251]
was originally reported of course these expenses聽 were legitimate but were somehow excluded due to聽聽
[257]
lapse in their bookkeeping and lastly filing聽 with the wrong filing status this one is a little聽聽
[263]
more straightforward perhaps you got married in聽 november but because you were single for most of聽聽
[268]
the year you might assume that you should file a聽 tax return with a single filing status that would聽聽
[273]
be false the irs considers you married for the聽 entire year as long as you're married by december聽聽
[279]
31st and the same is true if you got divorced聽 during the year if you're divorced by 1231聽聽
[285]
your filing status should be single for the entire聽 tax year even if you were legally married for most聽聽
[291]
of the year to recap you should file an amended聽 return if you entered your income incorrectly聽聽
[297]
you did not claim credits you're eligible聽 for you claimed deductions incorrectly聽聽
[302]
or you claimed the wrong filing status but there聽 are instances where you might catch a mistake聽聽
[308]
and do not have to file an amended return聽 those include simple mathematical mistakes聽聽
[315]
most mathematical mistakes are caught by the irs聽 when the return is processed the irs automatically聽聽
[321]
corrects these errors so you don't need to file an聽 amended tax return or you forgot to attach a w-2聽聽
[327]
or other tax document to your return if you forgot聽 to include a form or schedule to your return聽聽
[333]
this is not a big deal the irs will contact you聽 if they need this information in order to process聽聽
[338]
your return or errors associated with a rejected聽 return when a return is rejected the irs hasn't聽聽
[345]
accepted or processed your return yet so instead聽 of filing an amended return you would just need to聽聽
[350]
correct the errors associated with the rejected聽 return most commonly these types of errors are聽聽
[356]
related to identity theft or someone else already聽 filing a return using your social security number聽聽
[363]
or dependent information issues if after聽 considering all of these situations and you聽聽
[368]
conclude that amended tax return is necessary聽 here are five tips for filing an amended return聽聽
[375]
one use form 1040x to file an amended individual聽 tax return this form is much different from聽聽
[381]
form 1040 for your original filing it takes into聽 account what you originally filed the corrections聽聽
[387]
and the differences between the two two if you're聽 filing an amended return for a refund make sure to聽聽
[393]
do so within three years of the original due date聽 so if the amended return is related to tax year聽聽
[400]
2020 you must file form 1040x by april 15 2024 to聽 be eligible for the refund tax year 2020 returns聽聽
[409]
are due by april 15th 2021 and three years after聽 that is april 15 2024. three if you're due a聽聽
[417]
refund with your original return wait to receive聽 your refund before filing an amended return for聽聽
[423]
an additional refund it will just confuse things聽 at the irs if you file an amended return before聽聽
[428]
your original return was processed four if you owe聽 additional tax as a result of the amended return聽聽
[436]
