Channel: Kate Kaden
[0]
welcome to the next episode聽
of pajama drama welcome back聽聽
[6]
today we're talking about building your聽
emergency phone oh your your emergency phone聽聽
[14]
let's try that again today we're talking聽
about how to build your emergency fund聽聽
[19]
not the itty bitty little starter one i'm talking聽
about the full enchilada 3 to 6 maybe even 12聽聽
[26]
months of expenses but first i'm going to share聽
a little story that'll probably take you off
[37]
as i said we're going to talk about building your聽
emergency fund and why this should be a priority聽聽
[44]
of yours i think after everything we all just went聽
through we probably already know an emergency fund聽聽
[50]
is very important it will protect you against聽
worst case scenarios and you'll just always be聽聽
[56]
set up in case something happens because we聽
never know when something's going to happen聽聽
[61]
i wanted to share a little personal story to聽
illustrate another reason an emergency fund聽聽
[68]
could be really important i wish i would have聽
kept the name and number of this woman because聽聽
[75]
what she said to me if i didn't have higher聽
self-esteem if i didn't know a little bit聽聽
[84]
better could have literally kept me in聽
a horrible situation if i had listened聽聽
[92]
to this terrible woman's advice back when聽
i knew my marriage was going to be ending聽聽
[98]
which is one of the worst things you can ever聽
go through and i don't get into the details of聽聽
[103]
course you guys know i have nothing but the utmost聽
respect for my son's dad you guys know this you聽聽
[109]
will never hear a bad word out of my mouth about聽
him we co-parent great and he is an amazing dad聽聽
[117]
but when this all happened obviously things聽
happened to get to the point where the marriage聽聽
[123]
was ending or else it wouldn't end if you've聽
never been through this before which i had聽聽
[129]
never been through this before and never imagined聽
that i ever would go through it i was reaching for聽聽
[134]
what am i supposed to do how am i supposed to聽
handle this i was really looking for guidance聽聽
[140]
so i had been scrolling online looking for聽
lawyers and you know what steps should i be taking聽聽
[147]
what's the best way to handle this and i reached聽
out to this female lawyer down in florida because聽聽
[153]
she said that she would give free consultations聽
and really help you get on the right foot if聽聽
[158]
this is something you're thinking about yeah right聽
foot okay this is true pajama drama tonight people聽聽
[167]
this was so wrong so i called up this lawyer聽
name not mentioned in this video and i wanted聽聽
[175]
to set up a consultation a free consultation聽
as she advertised to explain my situation聽聽
[182]
and get a little bit of advice on what to do next聽
the words that came out of this woman's mouth
[191]
should never come out of anyone's mouth聽
when you're talking to a woman who has聽聽
[198]
just had a baby who is emotionally devastated聽
and is really looking for some help聽聽
[205]
i know she doesn't know me and the kind of person聽
that i am but not knowing anything about me聽聽
[212]
she started asking some questions i explained聽
that we were looking to end the marriage聽聽
[217]
that i had a baby and she literally said聽
to me it might just be your hormones
[228]
now listen i know after you have a baby your聽
hormones are a little nuts leading into it聽聽
[236]
after but this wasn't like it's just that time聽
of the month that i'm a little crazy right now
[245]
you guys know i'm not a spontaneous person i'm聽
not a fly by the seat of my pants person i'm not聽聽
[253]
a make a decision without having full information聽
kind of person i am a calculated pre-planner聽聽
[264]
and if i'm making a big decision it's because a聽
lot of thought months maybe even years put into聽聽
[272]
a decision before it's actually put into聽
fruition so for this woman to basically dismiss聽聽
[280]
the fact that we wanted to end our marriage聽
because i was hormonal was appalling i said聽聽
[287]
let's just get around the fact that maybe聽
it's not just my hormones in my situation聽聽
[293]
can we discuss a little further what would happen聽
and she was like well how much money do you have聽聽
[300]
which was obviously not much she's like well聽
then how are you going to pay for things聽聽
[307]
it's like with a job she's like where are you聽
gonna live and i'm like well these are all the聽聽
[313]
things that i'm you know and she was like i'm聽
not even kidding you guys she was like i don't聽聽
[317]
know what you think you're going through聽
but what do you want to be a single mother聽聽
[324]
like i'd be the first one on the planet and聽
like this was the worst thing in the world聽聽
[328]
i was like well it does look like that's what is聽
about to happen and not knowing anything about聽聽
[336]
my situation i'm not kidding like not knowing if i聽
was in a safe situation which i was by the way but聽聽
[343]
not knowing any of the dynamics of this she said聽
i really think you just need to get over yourself聽聽
[351]
and figure this out and stay together with him聽
because i mean otherwise what are you gonna do
[363]
this was the advice of a successful聽
female lawyer in orlando to me聽聽
[370]
again a person with lower self-esteem a person聽
that couldn't see their way around at this point聽聽
[379]
could have really stuck with the situation聽
that was not healthy for the relationship聽聽
[385]
because of this terrible terrible advice from聽
a so-called expert i feel like there was more聽聽
[392]
to this conversation but i'm just giving you the聽
highlights suffice to say it was horrifying that聽聽
[398]
this is what this woman was dishing out for advice聽
i know right now you're going kate what does this聽聽
[404]
exactly have to do with the emergency fund but i聽
promise you i'm getting there but i do want you to聽聽
[409]
know if you are a person right now that is on the聽
verge of divorce or thinking about it or you're in聽聽
[416]
a a marriage that is no longer healthy for the two聽
of you and you're looking for ways to get out of聽聽
[424]
it there are ways to get out of it and now this聽
is providing it's not a safety issue let's just聽聽
[430]
talk about run-of-the-mill unhappy perhaps you聽
know things happening that are not safety related聽聽
[437]
that's a whole other issue but if you are looking聽
to end your marriage and you're looking for ways聽聽
[442]
to successfully succeed there are ways to聽
do it or else i wouldn't be here right now聽聽
[450]
being a single parent is not worst case scenario聽
being a single parent should not carry the stigma聽聽
[458]
that it once did or should have ever really聽
been and i want you to know hear me right聽聽
[464]
now if you're a person struggling and聽
you're like well i can't do this because聽聽
[469]
i won't be able to afford it i will tell you it聽
is going to be hard and it's going to take some聽聽
[474]
hard work but there are ways to get there again or聽
else i wouldn't be here talking to you right now聽聽
[481]
so please do not feel helpless and聽
please do not listen to crappy advice聽聽
[486]
from people that don't care about you聽
please know that before i continue聽聽
[491]
but moving on the point being i don't want any聽
of you watching this to ever ever feel in that聽聽
[501]
hopeless desperate terrible dark place that聽
i was feeling at that time and i think that聽聽
[508]
one of the ways to prevent this is to have an聽
emergency fund this might not be your situation聽聽
[515]
you might be single and blissfully happy you聽
might be in a super happy super healthy marriage聽聽
[524]
and this is not on your radar but there are聽
other things there's job loss there's pandemics聽聽
[531]
there's lots of things that can happen there's聽
illness there's things that can come up and if聽聽
[538]
you are not prepared it will be way more stressful聽
than if you were prepared and i want to talk about聽聽
[545]
being as prepared as possible so you never have聽
to be in a hopeless place i just rewatched the聽聽
[553]
video i did on your starter emergency fund聽
which is the goal of a thousand dollars聽聽
[560]
to start off with if you haven't seen that video聽
i will leave it at the very end of this video you聽聽
[566]
don't have to go watch it right this second i will聽
leave it at the very end for you to watch next聽聽
[571]
you should start there and then we'll eventually聽
move to this which is your three to six months聽聽
[578]
maybe even 12 months if you can get there but聽
starting with three to six months in case an聽聽
[584]
emergency happens emergency again for our purposes聽
is job loss medical bills that are unexpected聽聽
[593]
something big not christmas not you want a new聽
handbag i'm talking amer gen c the video that聽聽
[601]
you're gonna watch on the starter emergency fund聽
is step one of this and then what you'll do is聽聽
[607]
just build on it later okay so if you follow dave聽
ramsey he suggests having a starter emergency fund聽聽
[615]
of a thousand dollars baby step two is to get聽
rid of all your debt except the house step three聽聽
[623]
is your full emergency fund which is three to聽
six months expenses and then the extreme on聽聽
[630]
that is like 12 but start with three to six like聽
i just said watch that video because i'm gonna聽聽
[635]
give you some tips in there on how to get that聽
emergency fund started and why it's important聽聽
[640]
but now just for all the examples i just gave you聽
prior to this and the story that i just gave you聽聽
[645]
having an emergency fund can save you in so many聽
different ways and really help the k squad not聽聽
[652]
have sleepless nights and just live a better life聽
when you are prepared and you don't feel like you聽聽
[658]
have to make decisions out of fear if you have聽
a three to six month emergency fund stored up聽聽
[664]
you know when disaster strikes you've got three聽
to six months and that is a game changer you don't聽聽
[670]
have to operate out of fear you don't have to make聽
decisions out of fear i can't stress enough to you聽聽
[676]
how important this emergency fund is and how much聽
peace of mind it will offer you if you want the聽聽
[683]
full details of how i was able to save up thirty聽
thousand dollars twenty thousand to pay off my car聽聽
[690]
and ten thousand for my emergency fund i will聽
leave a video at the very end that will give聽聽
[696]
exact details on what i do how i budget and how聽
i got there so please watch that at the end so聽聽
[703]
when we're done this video watch the one thousand聽
dollar starter emergency fund video and this other聽聽
[708]
one i will leave them both at the end so you can聽
watch them today i'm just going to focus on two聽聽
[715]
things to add in addition to those videos i really聽
think those are going to be super helpful but the聽聽
[720]
other two things that i want to add is number one聽
something i'm learning from the book that we are聽聽
[727]
reading together as a k squad on sundays which聽
is book club we meet every single sunday except聽聽
[734]
if it's a holiday on sundays at 10 a.m eastern聽
standard time to discuss the book of the month聽聽
[739]
right now we're reading this i will teach you to聽
be rich by ramit sethi and he offers the 10 rules聽聽
[747]
for a rich life and what i'm going to do right聽
now is just highlight number two in order to聽聽
[754]
get the most bang for your buck i would say聽
he says focus on the big wins the five to ten聽聽
[761]
things that get you disproportionate results聽
including automating your savings and investing聽聽
[768]
finding a job you love and negotiating your salary聽
get the big wins right and you can order as many聽聽
[774]
lattes as you want the reason i bring this up聽
is if you can get some of the big wins in guys聽聽
[782]
if you are joining us on sunday please join us聽
for more on all this information but if you can聽聽
[787]
get a job that pays well if you can automate your聽
savings so you're saving every single month there聽聽
[792]
are so many things that you can do to get the big聽
wins out of the way and then you will have again聽聽
[798]
disproportionate results if you can get those聽
things right to start with the second way would be聽聽
[804]
to focus on one thing to get some momentum聽
going for your emergency fund for example聽聽
[814]
i don't know why this stands out in my head but聽
i had a friend that was trying to lose weight and聽聽
[820]
she lost a ton of weight and i said girl what did聽
you do and she said i literally only cut out soda聽聽
[829]
that's the one thing she was doing that was聽
contributing to the weight she drank it around the聽聽
[834]
clock and all she did was eliminate soda that's聽
literally all she did and boom the weight fell off聽聽
[843]
so what i'm going to recommend maybe a quick聽
way to build that emergency fund up as quick聽聽
[849]
as you can is to maybe find your one thing that聽
you're spending excessively on and then i also聽聽
[856]
wanted to offer perhaps switching it up either聽
weekly or monthly until you get there so say聽聽
[863]
one month you're like we're not eating out this聽
month and you don't go out to eat at restaurants聽聽
[868]
for the month but you know the next month you're聽
gonna be able to do that but the next one you're聽聽
[872]
gonna cut out getting coffee every week standard聽
example or maybe you buy clothes all the time so聽聽
[880]
maybe one week you say i'm not buying clothes聽
this week whatever your kryptonite is whatever聽聽
[885]
the thing is that you spend money might i suggest聽
just trying to either do it for a month or a week聽聽
[891]
wherever you can stand to cut it out to get聽
there faster to save the money faster month would聽聽
[898]
probably make the most sense but if you can't go聽
a month switch it up weekly or bi-weekly whatever聽聽
[904]
works for you cut that thing out so you can build聽
up your emergency fund as fast as possible on top聽聽
[911]
of that i have endless frugal living videos聽
if you click on my playlist frugal living or聽聽
[917]
budgeting saving money there's lots more to watch聽
i have hours and hours of tips that can be helpful聽聽
[923]
if this is something you are working toward but聽
again i can't stress enough how an emergency fund聽聽
[930]
can change your life and put your heart your mind聽
and everything at peace and really cut down on the聽聽
[937]
financial anxiety if you know what i mean i don't聽
ever i don't ever want a member of the k squad聽聽
[944]
to feel the way i felt the day of that聽
conversation i really felt in a hopeless place聽聽
[951]
and i don't ever want you to feel that way i聽
want to be there for you and i want to offer聽聽
[955]
solutions to get you to your goals i hope聽
you got some value out of today's video聽聽
[962]
now is your turn please leave in the comments your聽
