How Much does a Bluewater Sailboat Cost? | Sailing Soulianis - Ep. 22 - YouTube
Channel: Sailing Soulianis
[0]
- Now that we've owned our
boat for a little while.
[3]
- And we have officially left the dock.
[6]
(upbeat music)
[8]
- We thought it might be a good time
[10]
right before we set off down the river
[12]
to take a step back and talk
to you guys about money.
[15]
- Cash flow.
- Dollah-dollah bills, y'all.
[16]
- Clams.
- Clams?
[19]
- Everybody always wants to
know, how much does it cost?
[21]
- And it's one of the most
important questions too
[23]
because it's one of the
biggest barriers for entry.
[26]
Once you decide that
you want to buy a boat,
[28]
once you decide that
you want to go cruising,
[30]
the next biggest question
is, do you have the money?
[32]
- Today we're gonna talk to
you about a couple of things.
[34]
We are going to answer the question,
[36]
how much does it all cost?
[37]
We just bought a boat.
[38]
That's the big one.
[39]
- We're gonna touch on
our saving and planning
[41]
in the years that lead up
to actually buying the boat.
[45]
(champagne squirting)
- Yeah (laughing).
[46]
Lauren just paid off all her school loans.
[49]
The types of expenses to
expect when purchasing a boat.
[53]
- [Woman] $370 to document a boat.
[55]
When you have a lien and
you have to record it
[56]
it jumps up to like $570.
[58]
- The upgrades that we
needed to do to the boat
[61]
once we purchased it.
[62]
- A new windlass.
[63]
- 44 pound Rocna.
[64]
We got a dinghy!
[65]
Here is your throne.
[67]
200 feet of chain.
[69]
- Lastly, we're gonna talk about
[70]
the tools that we developed,
[72]
to help us answer some of the questions,
[73]
like should we finance the boat
[75]
and how much boat can we afford?
[76]
And how much is it gonna cost
[78]
to make this boat into
what we want it to be
[80]
after we do buy it.
[83]
It took us 10 years
[84]
from the day we decided
we wanted to go sailing,
[86]
to signing the dotted line
to purchase our sail boat.
[89]
Was it 10 years, really?
[90]
- Yeah it was, I mean
it's kind of a gray area
[93]
but yeah, it's about a decade.
[95]
Overall, our biggest thing was
[97]
we didn't wanna just save
up some money, take off,
[100]
and then when that money run out,
[102]
be forced to come back to land.
[104]
We actually already had done that once.
[105]
It wasn't a boat situation,
but we quit our jobs
[108]
and we took off traveling,
and then we ran out of money
[111]
and we had to come back and get jobs.
[112]
We did that in our early 20s
[114]
and that wasn't something
we wanted to do again.
[119]
This time we wanted to
make it sustainable.
[121]
So we wanted to eliminate debt,
[123]
we wanted to acquire some
passive income streams
[126]
and.
[128]
- We needed to save for the boat.
[129]
- And we needed to save for the boat.
[130]
- So while it took us 10 years
to do all of those things
[133]
you can probably get
them done a lot faster
[134]
if you don't come out of school
with massive amounts of debt
[137]
and if you are comfortable with the idea
[140]
that after a year, or two,
[142]
you might need to stop
and get different jobs.
[145]
We're treating this a
little bit differently,
[148]
we're wanting to make it
a sustainable lifestyle
[150]
and so we are working
[152]
the entire time that we're traveling
[154]
and we're hoping to cut
back on that a little bit
[155]
but it's more of a lifestyle choice for us
[158]
rather then a sabbatical.
[160]
(upbeat music)
[162]
So during all of our time
thinking about buying a boat
[165]
in that 10 year period,
we also had to talk money.
[168]
We had to figure out how
much money we could spend
[170]
and it wasn't always clear because.
[173]
- The type of boat that we wanted changed.
[175]
- Drastically.
- Like drastically
[177]
over the years that we were searching.
[179]
- I'd like it, we'd have to
put some money into it though.
[182]
- That boat's a piece of work.
[184]
- We really didn't follow
[186]
a very well thought-out plan,
which is why I wrote the post
[190]
"How to Buy the Right Sailboat for You."
[193]
(laughs) So that you could
learn from our mistakes.
[195]
- So you're not idiots like us,
[197]
spending years looking for a boat.
[199]
- But when it came down to brass tacks,
[201]
we decided we had a
all-in budget of $50,000.
[204]
- And the $50,000 thing actually came
[208]
just a little bit after
[209]
we had like a $30,000
budget for a little while.
[212]
- For a while we thought we
wanted to stick around $30,000
[214]
and then we decided we could
go a little bit more to get
[217]
what we felt like would be
a significantly better boat
[220]
that was gonna require a lot less work.
[222]
- Yeah.
[223]
- So that really leads into, kind of
[225]
the thinking behind our budget
was, we had $50,000 all-in.
[229]
That meant we could buy a $50,000 boat
[231]
and not spend a penny more,
or we could buy a cheaper boat
[235]
and every dollar under $50,000
[237]
was money that we could
put towards upgrades.
[240]
- You might still be
wondering, why $50,000?
[243]
We wanted to buy a boat that
was pretty much ready to go.
[246]
We didn't want to be stuck in a boatyard
[248]
for months or years, trying to
finish a half-completed boat.
[252]
We looked at boats that
were less than $50,000
[255]
and we felt like either,
[257]
they were too small for the two of us,
[260]
or they weren't in good enough condition.
[262]
And so after looking at
hundreds of listings,
[266]
probably thousands, it
just seemed like $50,000
[269]
was the minimum amount
that we would need to spend
[272]
to comfortably get what
we were looking for,
[276]
which was something that
was pretty much ready to go
[278]
and also the size that we wanted,
[281]
somewhere between 35 and 40 feet.
[283]
- And the reason for that is a few things.
[285]
I'm six foot three, and
having standing head room
[288]
in the place that I'm going
to live, is very important.
[291]
Also, we work remotely, so
we need some office space
[295]
and having some space for
toys was also very important.
[301]
- [Lauren] What d'you got?
[304]
- I got some kiteboard here.
[305]
(upbeat music)
[307]
How much does it all cost?
[309]
Is that where we are at?
[310]
- Well, yeah, we're gonna focus on
[311]
how much it costs to
actually buy the boat.
[313]
Of course there are costs
once you buy the boat,
[315]
ownership costs, but we will
[316]
only.
- Save that for another video.
[319]
- Focus on what it costs to buy the boat.
[321]
- When buying a boat,
there are a lot of expenses
[324]
that are easily overlooked.
[325]
We found that when buying our
boat, all of those expenses
[329]
added up to about 10%
of the purchase price.
[332]
- And that's because of all
these other little expenses
[335]
that you really don't think about
[336]
when you're just browsing online,
[337]
looking at the listing price of the boat.
[340]
The list price of our boat, was.
[345]
- What was it, do you remember?
[346]
- I'm pretty sure, it was 40 ss.
[349]
- Do we need to look it up?
- Seven?
[352]
There it is, 47.
[354]
- Okay.
- 'Kay.
[355]
- So our all-in budget, was $50,000.
[357]
The boat was listed for $47,000.
[361]
Bing!
[362]
We're under budget already.
[363]
- Yay.
[364]
- We offered.
- 41,000
[365]
- We agreed on a purchase
price of $43,500.
[369]
- That.
- That was great (laughs).
[372]
- That left us with $6,500
for upgrades and repairs,
[376]
which we thought was fantastic.
[378]
- But not so fast.
[379]
- That was before we realized
[380]
all of the other transactional costs
[382]
associated with the purchase of our boat
[385]
were going to add up to $4,029.
[390]
- Wah-wah.
[390]
- So what were all of those costs?
[392]
- Survey, $740.
[394]
- Our haulout to inspect
the bottom of the boat
[396]
during the survey was $272.
[399]
- Insurance was actually something
[400]
that we needed to have at the closing
[402]
because we decided to finance our boat.
[404]
- $591.
[405]
We bought a Boat US membership,
[406]
so that we had unlimited towing.
[408]
We felt like we didn't
want to leave the dock
[410]
and go anywhere without that.
[412]
Was $10.
[413]
- $10 that was the best
money that we spent I think.
[416]
- (laughs) Closing costs, were $125.
[418]
- Registration was 73 but the
biggest one was sales tax.
[423]
- That was $2,218.
[426]
- Ouch.
[427]
- And depending on which state you are in
[429]
and how dubious you
feel like being that day
[431]
there are many ways,
both legal and illegal
[434]
to try and get out of paying the sales tax
[437]
but we just decided not to
go through all of that hassle
[440]
and pay up.
[441]
- Because we're also
not by nature, crooks.
[443]
So that did a good job of eating up
[445]
most of the rest of our budget.
[447]
- Leaving us with a total of
[450]
$2,471 for upgrades and repairs.
[453]
That's startin' to feel a little bit slim.
[456]
(jazz music)
[460]
- 99.9% of the time when you buy a boat
[461]
there's gonna to be something
that you want to do to it
[463]
after you buy it.
[464]
And in our case,
[465]
there was a bunch of upgrades
that we wanted to make.
[467]
- But we prioritized a number of things
[469]
that we wanted to do to the boat
[470]
before heading down the river.
[472]
- To be specific, we weren't
super-concerned about
[475]
getting a solar array up, we
also weren't concerned about
[479]
immediately upgrading our batteries.
[481]
Those were things that
we decided to do later.
[484]
But the things that we did do.
[487]
- Are many.
- Yes.
[488]
(jazz music)
[493]
- Are we showing a list
on screen right now?
[494]
- Sure, I don't know.
[495]
We bought a radar reflector,
[496]
we bought a handheld VHF,
[497]
we bought two jerry cans for fuel,
[498]
one for water.
[499]
We got a free inflatable dinghy with oars.
[500]
We upgraded all of our LED, all
of our cabin lights to LEDs.
[503]
We bought Navionics for our iPhone.
[504]
We purchased a new Rocna anchor.
[506]
We purchased and installed a windlass.
[507]
We added 200 feet of 5/16 high test chain.
[509]
We got an anchor bridle, a swivel.
[510]
And everything to finish out our.
[511]
- Anchoring system.
[512]
- Ground tackle anchoring system.
[513]
We got our cell phone signal
booster and an antenna
[514]
so that we can continue working.
[515]
And we made covers for our compass,
[516]
our handrails and our winches.
[517]
And put in some soundproofing
for our engine compartment
[519]
so that it wouldn't drive us crazy
[520]
as we were motoring down
the river in a sailboat.
[523]
That covers it.
[525]
- Is that it?
[525]
- That is all of our costs, to
date from purchasing the boat
[531]
through leaving our home port
[533]
and starting out on our adventure.
[536]
I just realized I didn't
include the stuff we bought
[539]
before we bought the boat
[540]
which was the holding
tank, which was $700,
[542]
which would put us $1,100 over budget.
[544]
- Oh (laughs).
- Shh.
[547]
There are probably a few thousand
dollars of other expenses
[551]
in there for just living expenses.
[553]
Probably a couple of hundred more in there
[555]
for just consumables and
every day odds and ends
[558]
like cleaning supplies, and.
- Kleenex.
[561]
- Little bits here and there
[562]
that didn't make it into this list.
[565]
- Kleenex.
- Kleenex.
[567]
Why Kleenex?
- I don't know.
[568]
- And a few months between buying the boat
[569]
and preparing her to head down the river,
[572]
we spent a total of (tapping on wood)
[576]
$2,924
[578]
meaning we were only $423 over budget.
[582]
For a grand total of $50,423 spent
[586]
to purchase and outfit our boat
[589]
for extended, long-term travel.
[592]
(upbeat music)
[595]
So how did we spend $50,000
[596]
and only manage to go $423 over budget?
[601]
That's a good question, you might ask.
[602]
- How do you know that a boat is listed
[604]
for a reasonable price?
[606]
How do you know what to offer?
[608]
Not all the time do you want
to offer the full price.
[610]
I mean, just like houses,
[612]
you often offer under
what the asking price is.
[616]
And then how did we know
that the counter-offer
[619]
was something that was acceptable?
[621]
Those are all really good questions.
[622]
And we didn't just stick with a feeling.
[625]
You know, it wasn't like
oh, this feels right.
[627]
But we crunched the numbers.
[628]
- As part of the process
to purchase our boat
[631]
we developed a few financial tools
[633]
to help us make decisions
[635]
and streamline the boat-buying process.
[638]
The first tool we created
to help us determine
[640]
what was the fair market value of the boat
[643]
that we were looking at.
[644]
It also served to help
us take an inventory
[646]
of everything that was on the boat
[648]
so that we could figure out
[650]
what else we might need to add
to that boat after purchase.
[652]
- 'Cause the boat itself
is only one part of it.
[655]
especially if you're going to be cruising,
[658]
all the extra stuff on
the boat is a big deal.
[661]
- So this tool helped us estimate the cost
[662]
of everything that we would
need to add to the boat
[664]
after purchase, and is a major reason
[667]
why we were able to stay
pretty close to our budget.
[670]
The tool also helped us
analyze sold boats data
[672]
we got from the listing broker.
[674]
We were able to look at
all of the sales history
[676]
for the past three years
[677]
of every Tartan 37 sold through a broker,
[680]
and analyze the average sales price,
[683]
how long it sat on the market,
[685]
the percent and dollar
amount of the discount,
[687]
and ultimately, generate
a suggested offer price
[691]
that we should make on the
boat that we were buying.
[694]
- [Lauren] So that we knew
[695]
we weren't gonna overpay on the boat.
[696]
- The second tool we created,
[698]
was a tool to help us decide
between buying the boat in cash
[702]
or financing the boat,
and saving that cash
[705]
and investing it in some other manner.
[707]
Both of those tools we created
[709]
were extremely important
in helping us make
[710]
all of the decisions throughout
our boat-buying process.
[713]
We're really excited
[714]
to be able to share those
tools with our patrons.
[716]
You'll have full access to
all current financial tools,
[718]
as well as any future
updates that we make to them
[721]
along the way.
[721]
- But if you're not a patron
[722]
and you're still interested
in using these tools, you can.
[725]
- We're making them available for purchase
[726]
and they can be downloaded
directly from our website.
[729]
Put a link in the description below.
[731]
- Below.
[732]
- Thanks so much for watching.
[733]
If you like what we had to share today
[735]
even through it was a little bit different
[736]
and at some times awkward.
[738]
(whispers) Mostly her.
[739]
- Yeah, definitely.
[740]
- (laughs) Let us know.
[741]
If there is somethin' that
we didn't cover here today
[743]
that you'd like to see, tell
us in the compli, compliments?
[745]
- Tell us in the compliments.
[747]
- Tell us in the compliments, yo.
[748]
- Compliments only (laughs).
[750]
Anyway, thank you for watching,
and we will see you soon.
