I Found the BEST Checking Account for Teens and Kids - YouTube

Channel: Smart Family Money

My two kids have had an allowance for聽 a long time but at ages 12 and 13,聽聽
[4]
it's getting to the point where they're kind聽 of outgrowing their method of managing money聽聽
[8]
keeping it in a jar. They're getting interested in聽 managing their own money with real bank accounts.聽聽
[14]
I'm going to tell you what I was looking for,聽 which banks I found, and which one I think is聽聽
[17]
definitely the winner. My must-have criteria were聽 they had to have accounts for kids under age 18,聽聽
[23]
with a debit card, no monthly fees, no minimum聽 to open or maintain. I also wanted them to have聽聽
[29]
mobile check deposit and free ATMs. Those were聽 my non-negotiables but I had a few things that I聽聽
[35]
would like to have if I could find them. I'd also聽 like them to allow accounts for kids under age聽聽
[40]
13 so that my 12-year-old could have one. Most聽 bank accounts, even for teenagers start at 13,聽聽
[45]
so that's a little tricky to find. I'd also like聽 access to deposit in cash and to branches if聽聽
[51]
we ever needed one. It'd be nice if it earned a聽 little interest. I'd also love it if as an adult聽聽
[56]
the bank account converted to a bank account that聽 my kids would like to use when they're in college聽聽
[60]
and adults. Unfortunately, I didn't find any聽 banks that fit all of my preferred criteria but聽聽
[66]
I did find three that met all of my must-haves.聽 So first off, the Chase high school checking.聽聽
[71]
The major pros of it are you can easily deposit聽 cash at branches or ATMs and they have branches聽聽
[77]
all over the country but they had a number of聽 cons. The first is the Chase requires that a聽聽
[81]
parent has a Chase checking account in order to聽 be able to open one of the high school checking聽聽
[86]
accounts for their children. It also has no聽 interest and at age 19 it automatically converts聽聽
[92]
into a Chase Total Checking account that has a聽 fee of 12 dollars a month unless you meet certain聽聽
[98]
requirements or you can choose to convert it to a聽 college checking account which is free with proof聽聽
[104]
of enrollment at college. Next up, the Wells Fargo聽 Clear Access account. It does have some pros in聽聽
[110]
that you can also deposit cash at branches and聽 ATMs and they do have branches and ATMs in most聽聽
[116]
of the country but they are not in my area so聽 it wasn't really an option for us. You do have聽聽
[121]
to go in person to open an account at Wells Fargo.聽 Some other cons are they do offer no interest and聽聽
[127]
at age 24, the type of account stays the same but聽 it does start charging them five dollars a month聽聽
[133]
to maintain this account. Finally, the Capital One聽 Money account. The pros are it can be opened fully聽聽
[138]
online, when the other two do require you to go聽 to a branch in person and they allow access for聽聽
[144]
kids ages 8 and up which is really good news聽 for my 12-year-old and it even earns interest.聽聽
[149]
It currently has an interest rate of 0.1. That may聽 not sound very great but it's actually higher than聽聽
[154]
a lot of savings account including Chase's.聽 Chase's savings accounts are currently .01.聽聽
[161]
Why don't they just say zero? That's ridiculous.聽 Anyway. They also do not require the adult to have聽聽
[167]
a Capital One account to open a Money account for聽 their child, which is really nice, and at age 19,聽聽
[174]
the account can convert into a Capital One 360聽 account or they can choose to keep it as a Money聽聽
[179]
account and all the spending limitations are聽 removed. Either way, it turns into a really nice聽聽
[184]
adult account when it's time. The only con for聽 the Capital One Money account is that there is聽聽
[189]
no way to deposit cash unless you have a Capital聽 One branch or ATM near you and those branches聽聽
[195]
and ATMs are only in a few cities so there aren't聽 any near me and chances are there aren't any near聽聽
[200]
you either. For us, the winner was definitely the聽 Capital One Money account. We decided it wouldn't聽聽
[205]
be a big deal to deposit cash into my account聽 and transfer it into theirs if we needed to.聽聽
[209]
I opened a Capital One Money account for both聽 of my kids. I did have a little bit of trouble聽聽
[213]
getting the online access set up for the kids, but聽 I called their customer service and they took care聽聽
[217]
of it really quickly so they definitely get bonus聽 points for good customer service. In addition to聽聽
[222]
the Capital One money account, my 13 year old聽 also has a Step account, which we reviewed in聽聽
[227]
a separate video. She's actually going to keep聽 both of them because the advantage of the Step聽聽
[231]
app is that she can use it to build credit as a聽 teenager. So next, check out my full review of聽聽
[237]
the Step app that I did together with my teenager.聽 I'm going to leave the link right here for you.
