hello everyone and welcome back to
[2]
english with lucy
[4]
today i am going to bring you 25
[7]
sentences for daily conversational use
[10]
when we have conversations we often use
[13]
the same sentences
[14]
again and again and again so i've got
[17]
some alternatives for you
[19]
some new smart sentences that you may
[22]
not have heard before
[24]
but they're definitely ones that we use
[26]
a lot especially in the uk
[28]
and around the world as well before we
[30]
get started i would just like to thank
[32]
the sponsor of today's video
[34]
it is italki if you haven't heard of
[36]
italki before it's a
[38]
huge online database of teachers who
[41]
give
[41]
one-to-one video lessons 24 hours a day
[44]
you can learn english and over 130
[48]
other languages from anywhere in the
[50]
world
[51]
it's an incredibly affordable way of
[54]
learning a language
[55]
much cheaper than an offline tutor or a
[57]
language academy
[58]
so many of my students message me and
[61]
ask me
[62]
how they can meet and talk with english
[64]
speakers
[65]
italki is the perfect option for you
[68]
because not only do they have qualified
[70]
teachers
[70]
they also have community teachers who
[73]
will practice conversation with you
[75]
they've given me an offer to pass on to
[77]
you you can get ten dollars worth of
[79]
italki credits
[80]
for free in your student wallet 48 hours
[83]
after making your first
[84]
purchase of any amount that could be a
[87]
free
[88]
lesson just click on the link in the
[90]
description box to sign up
[92]
right let's get started with the lesson
[95]
firstly let's discuss the phrases we can
[97]
use
[98]
when we meet someone that we either do
[101]
or
[101]
do not know these are different
[103]
situations the first phrase
[105]
it's nice to bump into you it's nice to
[107]
bump into you
[109]
now if you don't know someone you can
[111]
say it's nice to bump into you
[114]
and if you do know someone you've met
[116]
them before you can say
[117]
it's nice to bump into you again another
[120]
time
[121]
now the literal meaning of to bump
[124]
into someone is to collide i bumped into
[128]
someone at the supermarket and dropped
[130]
my
[131]
water for example however in this
[134]
instance
[134]
to bump into someone means to meet
[136]
someone unexpectedly
[138]
for example i might say i bumped into
[140]
your mum at the swimming pool
[143]
i unexpectedly met your mum
[146]
now the next one number two is a phrase
[148]
that we would use
[149]
if we don't know someone we haven't met
[152]
them before
[153]
but we have maybe heard of them before
[155]
or we have communicated with them
[157]
digitally maybe we've been talking over
[159]
email something like that
[161]
it is it's great to finally meet you in
[164]
person
[164]
it's great to finally meet you in person
[167]
i say this all the time when i meet
[169]
other youtubers people that i've seen
[171]
online
[171]
and then i go to a youtube event ah it's
[174]
so nice to finally meet them in person
[176]
now number three is speak of the devil
[180]
speak of the devil and this has a very
[182]
specific usage
[184]
this is said when a person appears
[187]
just after being mentioned for example
[190]
if i'm talking to a colleague
[192]
about someone's excellent presentation
[195]
and then that person appears
[197]
i could say speak of the devil we were
[199]
just talking about your excellent
[201]
presentation
[202]
this can be a great way to make someone
[204]
new feel
[205]
included especially if you have been
[208]
complimenting them
[209]
behind their back number four another
[211]
one to use
[212]
if you haven't met someone before but
[214]
you want to pay them a nice compliment
[216]
you can say i've heard so much about you
[219]
i've heard so much about you
[221]
and a really good response to this is
[224]
all good things i hope
[225]
all good things i hope or all positive i
[228]
hope
[229]
and the last one number five this is a
[232]
nice way of saying
[233]
i don't know who you are so please
[236]
introduce yourself to me
[238]
it is i don't think we've crossed paths
[240]
before
[241]
i don't think we've crossed paths before
[243]
to cross paths
[244]
is to meet someone by chance um and if
[248]
we haven't crossed paths before well
[249]
we've never met
[250]
but i think it's a little bit nicer than
[252]
saying who are you
[254]
i don't know who you are ah i don't
[255]
think we've crossed paths
[257]
okay next section let's say for now
[260]
that you have met someone that you do
[263]
know
[264]
you're going to want to catch up with
[266]
them and to catch up with someone
[268]
is to talk about everything that's
[270]
happened
[271]
since you last saw each other so we have
[274]
number six
[275]
which is how is everything going how is
[278]
everything going
[279]
if you can't specifically remember what
[282]
they've been doing
[283]
how is everything going is a great way
[285]
to let them lead the conversation
[288]
it gives them room to open up this might
[290]
refer to their family
[292]
their work their personal life romantic
[295]
life
[296]
who knows but you can let them lead the
[298]
conversation
[299]
because they decide what everything is
[301]
we also have number seven which is
[303]
what have you been up to what have you
[305]
been up to this is a really friendly
[307]
phrase
[307]
i've used this before i've taught it
[310]
before in my
[311]
stop saying how are you video if you are
[313]
up to something
[315]
it means that you are doing something
[317]
mischievous you know you're
[319]
doing something troublesome this phrase
[321]
is very warm and friendly it's saying
[324]
you know what trouble have you been
[325]
causing what have you been doing
[327]
it's something that we use a lot with
[328]
children or with animals i often say to
[330]
my dog
[331]
what have you been up to diego because i
[334]
know he's been doing something
[335]
mischievous
[336]
but now we use it with friends as well
[338]
it's very casual
[339]
but it's not inappropriate for
[340]
professional situations
[342]
if you know the person quite well what
[344]
have you been up to
[345]
oh not much i've not been up to much we
[348]
also have number eight
[349]
which is what have i missed fill me in
[352]
so if you haven't caught up with someone
[354]
for a while
[355]
this is a good way to ask them what has
[358]
happened
[358]
since you last spoke to fill someone
[362]
in is to give someone missing
[364]
information
[365]
to inform someone more fully of a
[368]
situation so if i'm saying
[370]
fill me in i'm saying tell me all this
[372]
missing information
[374]
another good one is we've got so much to
[377]
catch up on we've got so much to talk
[379]
about
[380]
so much has happened since we last saw
[382]
each other
[383]
now number 10 is one that you can use if
[385]
you've seen or met someone
[387]
that you know you need to spend a long
[389]
time talking to
[390]
but it's not the right time it is
[393]
there's so much to say
[394]
but i can't go into it now i can't go
[397]
into it now
[398]
to go into something is to discuss or
[401]
explain
[402]
something in a careful and detailed way
[405]
this implies that there are lots and
[406]
lots of details
[408]
too many for now maybe it would be
[410]
impolite to talk a lot
[411]
maybe there are some people around that
[412]
shouldn't hear what you're talking about
[415]
it's a good one to use to have up your
[417]
sleeve that means to have something
[419]
ready for later use
[420]
right so we've discussed talking to
[422]
people that we have met before
[424]
now what should we do with people that
[426]
we haven't met before
[427]
we should get to know them we should ask
[429]
some good
[430]
open-ended questions to get them talking
[433]
often we want to ask people how did you
[436]
get your job
[437]
you know how did you end up working here
[440]
that's not so polite
[441]
so a really good alternative is number
[444]
11 which is
[445]
how did you get into x how did you get
[449]
into marketing
[450]
to get into something in this context is
[452]
to become involved with
[453]
how did you get involved in marketing
[456]
another nice way of getting to know
[457]
someone is to ask them
[459]
what they do for fun and in american
[462]
english especially
[464]
what do you do for fun is a very common
[466]
question i would say
[468]
it's not so common in the uk but we do
[471]
see it in movies and tv shows a lot
[473]
we would say something more along the
[475]
lines of what do you do outside of work
[477]
or what do you do when you're not
[479]
working i think this is nicer than
[481]
asking someone
[482]
what do you do for fun because i know
[484]
when someone asks me what i do for fun
[486]
i think oh god i'm not that funny person
[489]
i like running will they think that's
[491]
fun enough um
[493]
so yeah just what do you do when you're
[494]
not working what do you do outside of
[496]
work
[496]
another good thing to talk about is
[498]
motivation and we want to know
[500]
what motivates people but instead of
[503]
just simply saying
[504]
what motivates you you could say what
[507]
makes you tick
[508]
what really makes you tick and this is
[510]
sort of asking what are you passionate
[512]
about
[512]
what keeps you going for example helping
[515]
my students gain confidence
[517]
really makes me tick another similar one
[520]
is what gets you out of bed in the
[522]
morning what do you get up for
[525]
or quite a fun and cheeky one is
[529]
what floats your boat what brings you
[531]
joy
[532]
this comes from the phrase whatever
[534]
floats your boat and this is something
[536]
that we say
[537]
when somebody says they like something
[539]
and we think it's a bit
[540]
strange so for example if someone says
[543]
they like running marathons every
[544]
weekend i might say
[546]
whatever floats your boat not my thing
[549]
but good for you
[551]
the question what floats your boat is a
[554]
variation of that
[555]
now when we meet people and we have a
[557]
really really good conversation
[559]
the next step is to ensure further
[562]
contact
[563]
to create further contact but we don't
[565]
just want to say
[566]
what's your number i would like to talk
[569]
again although
[570]
i quite like the direct approach there
[572]
are some other ways of doing this
[574]
like number 16 i'd love to carry this on
[578]
at a later date
[579]
or i'd love to carry this on at another
[581]
time
[582]
and this is just basically saying i
[584]
would love to continue this conversation
[586]
so you're sort of
[587]
stopping them there saying pause but
[589]
let's continue this
[591]
later on whether it's tomorrow or this
[593]
evening
[594]
another good one to use if you can see
[597]
that a conversation
[598]
is coming to an end maybe it's like a
[601]
break
[601]
in a conference you know that the next
[603]
lecture is starting
[605]
but you still want to make sure you
[606]
remain in contact with this person
[608]
you could say something like i feel like
[610]
we've got so much more to talk about
[613]
and this is a really nice one because
[615]
it's sort of passing the baton
[617]
it's passing the responsibility over to
[619]
the other person
[621]
it gives them the opportunity to say
[623]
well let's stay in touch
[624]
let's exchange contact details it's nice
[626]
if you don't know
[628]
if they want to stay in touch you're
[629]
kind of testing the water
[631]
if they say yeah let's stay in touch
[633]
brilliant if they don't well
[635]
there we are the next one number 18 is
[638]
to discuss something over a consumable
[642]
a food or a beverage we should discuss
[645]
this over lunch
[646]
we should chat over coffee we should
[648]
talk over dinner
[649]
if you think about it using the word
[651]
over is quite appropriate because
[653]
normally
[654]
two people having a meeting at dinner we
[657]
are speaking
[658]
over the top of the food another very
[661]
simple one very
[662]
casual number 19 is we should do this
[665]
again we should do this again
[666]
it's implying we should see each other
[668]
again and the last one number 20
[670]
if you want to be very direct and give
[672]
your contact details
[674]
you can say here's my email or here's my
[676]
number
[677]
drop me a line and we'll sort something
[678]
out drop me a line
[680]
and we'll sort something out so to drop
[683]
someone a line
[684]
is to write a brief message so it could
[686]
be a text
[687]
whatsapp an email and to sort something
[690]
out
[691]
is to organize something so we will
[693]
arrange another meeting
[695]
and the last set of phrases for me
[698]
the hardest part of any conversation
[702]
leaving the conversation it's just so
[704]
awkward isn't it
[705]
if you don't have much time you can use
[707]
21
[708]
which is oh i'm a bit pressed for time
[711]
i'm a bit pressed for time this is a
[713]
nice way of saying
[715]
i i don't have any time i need to go or
[717]
number 22
[718]
right i need to make a move
[722]
now in the uk
[725]
we always say right and sort of clap our
[730]
hands or clasp them together when we're
[732]
about
[733]
to begin to leave when we're about to
[735]
announce our departure
[737]
to make a move is to begin to leave or
[739]
just to leave
[740]
i'm going to make a move i'm going to
[742]
leave it's just a nicer way of saying it
[744]
because we're
[746]
we're beating around the bush we're
[748]
avoiding the topic
[750]
i don't want to say i'm leaving i'm
[752]
going to say i'm making a move
[754]
another very similar one is i'm going to
[757]
have to get
[758]
going i'm going to have to get going
[762]
or i need to get going to get going
[765]
again
[766]
it's like to make a move it is to begin
[768]
to leave but by saying
[769]
i have to it's implying i don't want to
[773]
i just have to it's not my choice but i
[776]
need to
[777]
now a really nice one a really
[780]
interesting maybe slightly manipulative
[782]
one but i learned it from someone
[784]
that i really respect it's an older
[787]
woman in my village
[788]
and i always really enjoy talking to her
[791]
at parties in our village
[793]
now i probably enjoy speaking to her
[796]
more than she enjoys
[797]
speaking with me and she said this
[801]
wonderful thing once when she wanted to
[802]
leave
[803]
our conversation but she did it in such
[804]
a nice way she said
[806]
i don't want to hog you so i'm going to
[808]
you know go over here
[809]
to hog something is to take or use
[811]
something good
[812]
all for yourself so that other people
[814]
can't have it
[816]
and she was saying i don't want to keep
[817]
you all to myself
[819]
so i'm going to make sure other people
[820]
can talk to you too it's implying that
[823]
whoever you're talking to
[824]
is so great that they need to talk to
[826]
lots of people so lots of people can
[828]
benefit from talking to them
[830]
it wouldn't be right to deny others the
[833]
chance of talking to this person
[835]
i'm just going to throw that in there i
[837]
thought it was really interesting
[839]
kind of like reverse psychology instead
[842]
of making me feel
[844]
abandoned it made me feel flattered
[848]
i'm so weak and the last one number 25
[851]
i've already taken so much of your time
[854]
i've already taken so much of that time
[855]
i don't want to take any more
[857]
that's a great way of saying you know i
[859]
don't want to leave but
[860]
i've already wasted so much of your time
[862]
that i'm going to go
[864]
just because it's fair on you right
[866]
that's it for today's lesson
[868]
those are your 25 smart sentences
[871]
for daily conversation really good
[875]
if you're going to a new place you're
[876]
going to meet lots of new people
[878]
or you're going to see lots of people
[879]
that you haven't seen in a while
[881]
don't forget to check out italki and
[884]
