5 Reasons You Should Be An Accountant - YouTube

Channel: Accounting Stuff

[0]
in this video I'm going to give you five
[2]
reasons to become an accountant hey
[8]
though welcome back to the channel I'm
[10]
James
[11]
this is accounting stuff and today I'm
[13]
going to give you five real reasons to
[16]
become an accountant
[17]
maybe you're considering doing
[18]
accounting as a career or perhaps you've
[20]
been the game for a while now and you're
[22]
thinking geez accounting big mistake why
[25]
did I decide to do this in the first
[27]
place whichever is let me know down the
[29]
comments I'd like to hear your story
[31]
I've been working in the industry for
[33]
about seven years now maybe a bit more
[35]
and during this time I've had the
[37]
opportunity to work on both sides of the
[39]
fence in public accounting as an auditor
[41]
at the big four and in the private
[44]
sector as a financial accountant so all
[46]
of these reasons that I'm about to give
[48]
you are coming from my own personal
[50]
experience is going to be no particular
[52]
order to these except that the last one
[54]
is my favorite let's jump right in
[57]
reason number one accounting is a stable
[60]
industry here's how I see it I like to
[64]
picture the economy as an ocean spies
[66]
sweeping over a rocky beach there are
[69]
high tides and low tides booms and busts
[72]
blowing in and out over the rocks on the
[75]
shoreline tides are temporary they're
[78]
constantly changing over time but the
[81]
rocks are permanent they don't budge
[83]
they stoically hold their position and
[86]
observe the waves blowing around them if
[88]
an oceans tides represent the economy
[91]
then the rocks are accountants because
[93]
businesses will always need accountants
[96]
for every reporter disturbs an ocean
[99]
surface every time a financial
[101]
transaction takes place businesses need
[104]
accountants to record process and
[107]
summarize these transactions into
[109]
financial reports the need for
[111]
accountants is constant no matter
[114]
whether we're in a boom or a recession
[117]
accountants of rocks
[121]
okay reason number two accounting will
[124]
teach you to become financially literate
[126]
financial literacy is the process of
[128]
educating yourself to being able to
[130]
manage your money personal finances and
[133]
investments efficiently and effectively
[135]
I've mentioned this before and I'd bring
[138]
it up again now because I believe that
[140]
financial literacy is one of the most
[142]
important skills that you can learn in
[144]
life it teaches you to budget and save
[146]
the value of interest and the meaning of
[148]
all of the different financial terms the
[151]
sooner that you can understand all of
[152]
these the better I wish that I'd become
[154]
financially literate ages ago like when
[157]
I was 16 or something because if I had
[159]
then my finances were being a much
[160]
better shade today thankfully though
[162]
accounting taught me to become
[164]
financially literate and it can help you
[166]
to if you'd like to learn more I've made
[168]
a whole playlist covering accounting
[170]
basics that you can find up here and I
[172]
keep adding to it each week so don't
[173]
forget to hit the subscribe button and
[175]
ring the bell to be notified when the
[177]
next one's out right reason number 3 and
[180]
I've been debating whether to include
[181]
this one or not because I'm sure that
[183]
some of you are going to disagree with
[184]
me but anyway accounting is interesting
[187]
see I didn't even blink when I said that
[189]
hold up before you get stuck him in the
[191]
comments let me explain
[193]
accounting gets a bad rep from a lot of
[195]
people for being a boring profession but
[197]
the way I see it all comes down to a
[199]
mindset and how you approach your work
[201]
you have two options option one
[204]
rinse and repeat in accounting
[207]
repetitive monthly deadlines are common
[209]
and accountants are often put in a
[211]
situation where we can take last month's
[213]
workbook wipe it clean and roll it
[216]
forwards into the current month again
[218]
and again rinse and repeat
[220]
this approach to make life easy because
[222]
in the short term its efficient your
[224]
glide through your to-do list as quickly
[226]
as possible but once you've repeated
[228]
this process over and over it becomes
[230]
monotonous and boring work doesn't
[233]
motivate you anymore it's become a grind
[235]
option to is where you go the extra mile
[238]
challenge yourself to work beyond your
[240]
managers and your own expectations and
[243]
by that I don't mean it's sitting in
[244]
your desk working late while everyone
[246]
else in your team has gone home I mean
[248]
working with intention so when your next
[250]
base with a task that you've done a
[252]
gazillion times before
[254]
give yourself some time to pause and
[255]
reflect look for the kinks in the system
[258]
what about this process is inefficient
[260]
and how can you streamline it don't get
[263]
me wrong in the short term this approach
[264]
is hard work and it can be
[266]
time-consuming but in the long run
[268]
that's when it'll reap the benefits
[270]
because if you invest your time and
[271]
effort now to make a process quicker in
[274]
the future then work will start to feel
[276]
a lot more rewarding and hopefully your
[278]
boss will notice your efforts too it
[280]
will separate you from the crowd and
[281]
earn you recognition and perhaps a
[283]
promotion that'd be nice if it doesn't
[286]
if you've gone through all of this
[287]
effort and your boss doesn't even notice
[289]
or care then quit or at least examine
[292]
your options we work in one of the most
[294]
stable industries in the world which
[296]
brings me on to reason number four
[298]
accounting as an industry offers us a
[301]
wealth of opportunities and flexibility
[303]
there are so many different branches of
[305]
accounting that you can pick from to
[306]
match the lifestyle that you want to
[308]
live if you're looking to climb the
[310]
ladder as quickly as possible then
[311]
consider working in audit but if you
[314]
prefer working the 95 and a role with a
[316]
bit less stress then an option is to
[318]
work in private accounting and a non
[319]
listing company but doesn't have all of
[321]
those extra compliance requirements
[323]
after a few years building some
[325]
experience you could choose to work for
[327]
yourself go it alone and create your own
[329]
private practice lots of people do this
[331]
it's hard work but if you manage to
[334]
build a profitable business then this
[336]
will be a rewarding journey working in
[338]
accounting will open doors for you and
[339]
teach you valuable transferable skills
[342]
you can make use of in whichever career
[344]
path you choose to follow ok
[347]
reason number 5 my personal favorites
[350]
him bear with me because this might
[351]
sound counterintuitive you can use
[353]
accounting as a stable platform that
[355]
enables you to take risks what do I mean
[358]
by that here's my logic many people
[361]
myself included are drawn to accounting
[364]
because of the stability that it offers
[366]
accountants of rocks after all as a
[368]
career it offers job security and that
[370]
prospect can be very enticing perhaps
[374]
too enticing because playing things safe
[377]
can become a habit which is fine
[379]
everyone's entitled to make their own
[381]
choices but personally I feel that I've
[383]
learned the most from some of the
[385]
riskier decisions in my
[386]
like five years ago I left my safe job
[388]
at the big four in London to move to
[390]
Australia it was a new country I had no
[393]
work lined up and I didn't know many
[394]
people there by my standards it was a
[397]
risky decision and do I regret it well
[400]
yes it was madness just kidding
[403]
no I'm glad I made that choice it was
[405]
scary at first but eventually I got a
[408]
job
[408]
found a place to say and then did I'm
[410]
living there for three years I have a
[412]
tough time making risky decisions but
[414]
accounting is my safety net as an
[417]
industry there's always demand for it so
[419]
you can feel confident finding work
[421]
again if things end up going pear-shaped
[423]
moving to Canada to start this channel
[424]
is another risk that I'm dealing with
[426]
right now whether this was a wise
[429]
decision remains to be seen
[430]
time will tell but the experience so far
[433]
has been incredibly valuable I've had
[436]
the opportunity to chat and meet with so
[439]
many interesting people through YouTube
[441]
and I don't regret this choice one bit
[443]
so if you're working in accounting or
[446]
thinking about it
[447]
are there any risky decisions that
[449]
you've been agitating on maybe
[451]
accounting can be the rock that
[453]
encourages you to take the first step
[456]
powerful stuff on the channel today if
[458]

[459]
accounting then check out this playlist
