Does Donating to Charity Save You Money On Taxes? - YouTube

Channel: Influential Finance

[0]
have you ever heard anyone say that you
[1]
should donate money to charity towards
[3]
the end of the year so you can save
[5]
money on taxes well this is a huge
[7]
misconception that i keep hearing again
[10]
and again although you might pay less in
[12]
taxes by donating the amount that you
[14]
save is not greater than the amount that
[16]
you donate and in this video i'm going
[18]
to go over exactly how this works so
[20]
that you understand and are not
[22]
repeating the same myth to other people
[24]
let's go
[26]
hey this is carlos with influential
[27]
finance and on this channel i make
[29]
weekly videos to help you improve your
[32]
personal finances so if you're new here
[34]
consider subscribing now before i start
[36]
i just want to get one thing out of the
[38]
way by me explaining to you that you
[40]
don't save money in taxes by donating
[42]
does not mean that i am telling you to
[44]
stop donating money i'm only educating
[46]
you so that you understand how taxes
[47]
work and are not donating for the wrong
[50]
reasons i donate every month to causes
[52]
that i care about and i believe that
[53]
everyone who can should as well so with
[56]
that said let's jump into it so reason
[59]
number one why donating money doesn't
[61]
actually save you money in taxes is that
[64]
you can only deduct charitable
[66]
contributions if you itemize your
[68]
deductions on your taxes so right off
[71]
the bat if you don't know what itemizing
[73]
your deductions is you probably don't
[75]
itemize your deductions only about 10 of
[77]
americans actually itemize their
[79]
deductions on their taxes so only about
[82]
10 of people actually might be able to
[85]
take advantage of this deduction so to
[87]
give you a brief explanation on your
[89]
taxes you have your standard deduction
[91]
and you have your itemized deductions
[93]
you can take one of these two deductions
[95]
on your taxes most people take the
[98]
standard deduction the standard
[99]
deduction for 2021 is about 12 550
[104]
for a single individual under the age of
[106]
65. however the government allows you to
[108]
itemize your deductions if your itemized
[111]
deductions are above the standard
[112]
deduction if your itemized deductions
[114]
don't add up to more than the standard
[116]
deduction then you can only take the
[118]
standard deduction so like i said before
[120]
about 90 of americans take the standard
[123]
deduction so by you donating money
[125]
there's a high probability that you
[127]
won't even be able to take the
[129]
charitable donation deduction so when
[131]
considering the standard deduction
[132]
versus itemizing your deductions some of
[135]
the things that you can itemize are the
[137]
interest portion of your mortgage
[139]
payments
[140]
any large medical expenses
[142]
and any donations that you made to
[144]
charity if you total all of these
[146]
expenses and it's larger than the
[148]
standard deduction then you can itemize
[150]
your deductions instead of taking the
[152]
standard deduction however as i've said
[154]
before for most people you will not be
[157]
itemizing your deductions because most
[159]
people don't have 12 over 12 000 of
[163]
uninsured medical expenses of donations
[165]
to charity and things like that one
[168]
exception to this that i actually spoke
[169]
about in a different video is that in
[171]
the cares act that was passed last year
[173]
in 2020 uh for coronavirus relief there
[176]
was an exception made that actually
[178]
people who take the standard deduction
[180]
could take an additional 300
[183]
on their taxes this is the only
[184]
exception that i've seen to be able to
[186]
deduct charitable donations without
[188]
actually itemizing your deductions the
[190]
second reason why you don't actually
[192]
save money on taxes by donating to
[194]
charity is that the amount of the
[196]
benefit or the amount that you save in
[198]
taxes is not greater than the amount
[201]
that you actually donate so i'm going to
[203]
put some numbers on this frame just so
[204]
that you can follow along so for this
[206]
example let's say that you're making 100
[208]
000
[209]
out of your 100 000 you choose to donate
[212]
five thousand dollars to a random
[213]
charity of your choice so this five
[215]
thousand dollar donation that you made
[218]
what it does is that it reduces your
[220]
taxable income it pretty much reduces
[222]
the number or your income that your
[224]
taxes are calculated from aka your
[227]
taxable income so instead of paying
[229]
taxes on 100 000
[231]
you would instead pay taxes on 95 000
[235]
so assuming a 20 tax rate if you were to
[238]
donate five thousand dollars from your
[240]
one hundred thousand dollar salary your
[242]
tax savings would be one thousand
[245]
dollars i calculated that by taking the
[247]
five thousand dollars that you donated
[249]
times your tax rate that would give you
[250]
your tax savings so in this scenario you
[254]
donated five thousand dollars to only
[257]
save one thousand dollars in taxes and
[259]
if you were to flip this around and you
[261]
were to keep your five thousand dollars
[263]
and pay the taxes on that five thousand
[266]
dollars you would end up with four
[268]
thousand dollars you would end up
[270]
keeping four thousand dollars and paying
[272]
one thousand dollars in taxes hey if
[274]
you're enjoying this video i actually
[275]
make videos just like this one every
[277]
single week so if this is something that
[279]
you want to see more of make sure you
[281]
click the subscribe button and turn on
[283]
notifications so that you get notified
[285]
every time i post a video alright let's
[287]
get back to the video
[289]
so as you can see you would literally
[290]
end up with more money by just keeping
[293]
your money and not donating it and like
[295]
i said before like i said at the
[296]
beginning of this video i'm not telling
[298]
you to not donate your money this is not
[300]
the purpose of this video i'm just
[302]
trying to get people to stop saying that
[304]
you should donate money to save money on
[306]
taxes i even hear charities at the end
[308]
of the year trying to get people to
[310]
donate by telling them that there's that
[311]
they'll save money on taxes and that's
[313]
just not the case like i said you might
[315]
pay less taxes but overall you do not
[318]
come out on top here so from those first
[320]
two reasons that we've already discussed
[322]
the main two takeaways are that one
[324]
there is a very low likelihood that you
[326]
are itemizing your deductions so the
[328]
charitable contribution deduction
[330]
probably doesn't even affect you and two
[332]
the amount that you benefit or the
[334]
amount that you did that your taxes are
[336]
reduced by is not greater than the
[338]
amount that you donate so you would end
[340]
up with more money in your pocket if you
[342]
were to keep the money and not donate at
[344]
all one last thing that i wanted to go
[346]
over to finally put this to rest once
[348]
and for all is that a lot of people
[350]
think that if you're on the edge of a
[352]
tax bracket you can donate money to drop
[355]
yourself into a lower tax bracket and
[357]
therefore pay a lower percentage of
[360]
taxes in your total income and this is
[362]
also not true if anybody ever tells you
[365]
this they clearly have no idea how our
[368]
tax system works here in the us we have
[370]
what's called a progressive tax system
[372]
so what a progressive tax system means
[374]
it's just that we apply higher taxes to
[377]
higher levels of income so i'm gonna go
[379]
ahead and put a picture on the screen of
[381]
all of the tax brackets so that we can
[383]
talk about it so on the screen right now
[384]
you're looking at the tax brackets for
[387]
2021. for the sake of this example let's
[390]
just focus on the unmarried or single
[392]
individuals a lot of people think that
[393]
you know if you look at the 24 tax
[396]
bracket a lot of people assume that if
[398]
you're between that income range then
[400]
you pay a 24 tax rate and that is not
[403]
the case so to give you a very brief
[405]
example of how our tax brackets work
[408]
let's assume that again that we're
[409]
making a one hundred thousand dollars
[411]
even though we're making one hundred
[413]
thousand dollars the ten percent tax
[416]
bracket and the twelve percent tax
[417]
bracket all affect us still even though
[420]
we're making significantly above the
[422]
income thresholds that you see here so
[424]
what this tax bracket is telling us is
[426]
that for whatever money we make between
[429]
zero to nine thousand nine hundred and
[431]
fifty dollars we would pay a ten percent
[433]
tax rate and then we would move on to
[435]
the next tax bracket which is any money
[437]
made between nine thousand nine hundred
[439]
and fifty one to forty thousand five
[441]
hundred and twenty five dollars for any
[443]
money that we made between those two
[445]
amounts we will pay a twelve percent tax
[448]
rate and then since for this example
[450]
we're assuming that we're making a
[452]
hundred thousand dollars a year we would
[454]
continue to move down until we hit our
[456]
our total taxable income but the thing
[458]
that i want you to get out of this is
[460]
that when you cross into a higher tax
[463]
bracket you don't pay the new tax rate
[465]
on all of your income the percentage for
[467]
that new bracket would only affect the
[470]
income that is over that bracket's limit
[473]
not on the rest of your income so i hope
[476]
this video finally puts this myth to
[478]
rest because i'm tired of hearing people
[481]
telling me over and over again that you
[483]
should save you should donate money to
[485]
save money on taxes and like i said
[487]
before everyone that can should donate
[489]
but that's not the reason why you should
[491]
because it's just not true so as the end
[494]
of the year is approaching you might
[495]
hear people tell you to donate money to
[497]
save money on your taxes and if anybody
[500]
ever tells you that you should do that
[502]
you can now send them this video that
[505]
pretty much wraps it up for this video
[506]
but i've actually let youtube decide
[509]
which video you should watch next and if
[511]
you want to see the video that youtube
[512]
selected just for you make sure you
[515]
click the video right up here and i'll
[517]
see you there peace
