[8]
What is going on, everyone?
[9]
Welcome back to the "World According to Briggs,"
[11]
and another video on where you can live
[13]
in the United States for under $1,500 a month.
[16]
This is the third video of the series.
[18]
If this is your first time to the series
[19]
I'll give you the rundown
[21]
of why we settled on $1,500 a month.
[23]
Plenty of Americans are going into retirement
[25]
where their only source of income
[26]
is a monthly social security check,
[28]
which is in the neighborhood of $1,500 a month on average.
[31]
The average worker in the United States
[33]
makes about double that.
[35]
If you retire from the military after 20 years,
[37]
you see about $2,500.
[39]
If you were enlisted and on the officer side,
[41]
you see about $4,700 a month on average.
[45]
So $1,500 being the lowest,
[47]
if you slip into any of those categories,
[50]
which most of you should fall into one of them,
[52]
living on $1,500 a month is doable.
[55]
Today's list is decent towns in the Southern United States
[58]
where you only need about $1,500 to live comfortably.
[61]
Let's see what we found.
[65]
Number 10, Kingston, Tennessee,
[67]
Kingston has its roots in a fort called Southwest Point,
[70]
which was built just south of present day Kingston
[72]
in 1792 on the Clinch River.
[75]
At the time, this was as far southwest
[77]
legally the white man could go.
[79]
And stop typing, I just said, white man.
[81]
I could have said Euro Americans, European settlers,
[84]
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
[86]
Everyone knows what I'm talking about.
[87]
Being offended isn't a skill.
[88]
I just had some jackaloon cry,
[90]
because I said having to wear a Chuck E. Cheese outfit
[93]
and dance for minimum wage was humiliating.
[95]
He failed to understand that is humiliating.
[98]
Ask any 18-year old whose friends found out
[100]
that that's what they do for a living.
[101]
It is humiliating.
[102]
Coincidentally, there's no Chuck E. Cheese in Kingston.
[105]
You gotta go towards Knoxville for that kind of action.
[107]
Kingston has about 6,000 residents,
[109]
low crime, good schools, a livability score of 84,
[112]
and a very low cost of living.
[113]
Rent here for a one bedroom,
[115]
there's not a bunch of apartments,
[116]
but on average it's $702 a month
[118]
for a one bedroom apartment.
[120]
And you only need about $1,490
[123]
on average to live comfortably here.
[127]
Number nine, Frankfort, Kentucky.
[129]
Frankfort is the capital of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
[132]
Yes, they're a commonwealth, not a state.
[133]
It's not much of a difference.
[135]
If living around people from your generation
[137]
that remember black and white television matters to you,
[139]
I got good news.
[140]
Almost 20% of the population of Frankfort is over 65.
[144]
Frankfort isn't just for retirees though.
[146]
They have plenty to do,
[147]
the crime isn't terrible,
[148]
and neither are your job opportunities.
[150]
They're not the best, but they have some work there.
[152]
Frankfort has about 25,000 residents.
[154]
And rent on a one bedroom apartment will run you about $697.
[159]
That's not bad for a capital city.
[161]
Your total monthly expenditures on average is $1,470.
[166]
That's not bad.
[167]
Frankfort's a nice town.
[168]
I was there years ago, but it's been many years actually,
[171]
probably over 20.
[172]
But it was a nice town, I'm sure not a lot has changed.
[176]
Number eight, Englewood, Florida.
[178]
Englewood is another city that's heavy on retirees.
[182]
It's in between Fort Myers and Sarasota on Lemon Bay,
[184]
which is on the west side of Florida, on the Gulf side.
[187]
Over half of the city's residents are retirees.
[190]
That's how a lot of the towns in Florida are.
[193]
They have a livability score of 77,
[194]
and the rent on a one bedroom apartment on average is $800.
[198]
They have some that are so much more expensive,
[201]
but they have a lot that are lower, so the average is $800.
[204]
That's a little bit higher than other rents on this list,
[207]
but thanks to low taxes and other factors,
[209]
you only need about $1,461 a month
[212]
to live comfortably in Englewood.
[214]
Now what's weird about this place,
[215]
I wanna call it Inglewood.
[216]
I grew up in Southern California.
[218]
We have a place called Inglewood, it's spelled with an I.
[220]
I see this Englewood and it's weird.
[222]
I've heard several people call it Inglewood
[224]
and I've also heard other people call it Englewood.
[226]
Yeah, I don't know if you can tell the difference.
[227]
There's a difference there to some of them.
[229]
Who knows? Moving on.
[232]
Number seven, Benton, Louisiana.
[235]
Benton is about 30 minutes north of Shreveport, Louisiana.
[238]
This is a nice, rural town
[239]
with great stats other than employment.
[241]
So if you're retired or you're bringing a job with you,
[243]
you know, work remotely, this is a perfect place.
[246]
If you're looking for a job, probably not so much.
[248]
There's no apartments in Benton,
[249]
but this area on average a one bedroom
[252]
goes for somewhere around $684 a month.
[255]
They did get a good tornado here about 20 years ago,
[258]
so that's kind of scary.
[258]
On April 3rd, 1999, a powerful F4 tornado
[262]
made its way through town,
[263]
killing six people and injuring 90.
[265]
A mobile home park, located south of town,
[267]
was hit pretty hard.
[268]
I don't know what it is,
[269]
but whenever you see a tornado
[270]
it's always a mobile home park just got trashed.
[273]
They've got some kind of thing
[274]
that draws in tornadoes, who knows?
[277]
Anyway to live here comfortably
[278]
you're gonna need about $1,420 a month, not bad.
[284]
Number six, Russellville, Arkansas.
[286]
Okay, once you get past the fact you're living in Arkansas,
[289]
this is a nice option to relocate and save some money.
[291]
It doesn't have the best crime stats,
[293]
but it's not crazy bad and it's getting better.
[296]
Their year-over-year numbers
[297]
are trending in the right direction with crime.
[299]
This is one of the bigger cities
[301]
you can live in for under $1,500 a month.
[303]
They have almost 30,000 residents
[305]
and Russellville is right on the Arkansas River,
[307]
not too far from the Ozark National Forest.
[310]
Rent here is only $672 a month on average,
[314]
and you can live comfortably on $1,400 a month.
[318]
Number five, Dalton, Georgia.
[320]
Dalton, Georgia is almost
[322]
an hour and a half north of Atlanta
[323]
and almost 30 minutes south of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
[326]
So you have two good options
[327]
if you wanna go to a bigger city for some reason.
[329]
Dalton is a good sized city with almost 35,000 residents.
[333]
And it's not a good place to be looking for a job,
[335]
that's one of their only knocks
[337]
is they don't really have jobs.
[339]
Their crime is decent.
[340]
Schools are okay.
[341]
Their cost of living is very low.
[343]
And if you're looking for cheap rent,
[345]
you've come to the right place.
[346]
The average rent here for a one bedroom is $647 a month.
[350]
That's not bad.
[351]
You only need $1,375 to live here comfortably.
[356]
Number four, Calhoun, Georgia.
[359]
Staying in Georgia, we have the town of Calhoun.
[361]
Calhoun is home to about 17,000 residents
[364]
and some well-preserved,
[365]
turn of the century, southern architecture.
[367]
This is a nice looking place.
[368]
They got some really nice buildings on the main street.
[371]
Calhoun has gained population every single census
[374]
since they showed up on the census count
[376]
in 1880 with 510 people.
[379]
Most of them were related to a dude named Jebediah
[382]
and he had a really cool beard.
[383]
Calhoun is in between Dalton and Atlanta,
[385]
and they have nice middle of the road stats
[387]
until you get to the cost of living and housing.
[389]
Those are both great rent.
[391]
Here will run you about $632 a month on average,
[394]
and you'll need about $1,370 here to live comfortably
[397]
and enjoy Calhoun and their livability score of 73.
[402]
Number three, Mocksville, North Carolina.
[405]
Right off the bat, I gotta tell you
[407]
both the Carolinas were hard to get on this list.
[409]
They have some really cheap cities and towns,
[412]
but almost all of them suck pretty bad.
[414]
The good ones are too expensive
[415]
and both states have some incredibly nice,
[417]
but they're just a little too spendy for this list.
[419]
Mocksville, on the other hand, is a solid choice.
[422]
Stats are good across the board,
[423]
nice American main street,
[425]
and the standard issue old folks
[427]
in front of the ice cream place, America.
[429]
If you wanna live in this Norman Rockwell type town,
[432]
rent will run you about $613 a month on average.
[436]
And you're looking at about $1,350
[438]
a month to live comfortably.
[440]
Mocksville is about an hour north of Charlotte.
[443]
Mocksville has a livability score of 71.
[448]
Number two, Decatur, Alabama.
[450]
Decatur is one of those cities that make you wonder
[453]
where all those Alabama stereotypes come from.
[455]
Like if you just landed in Decatur
[457]
and no place else in Alabama,
[458]
you're all, "What is everyone talking about?
[459]
The people aren't hicks."
[460]
Decatur's a nice southern town that is growing and advancing
[463]
while not getting too far from its southern roots.
[466]
In other words, this town doesn't have many rednecks.
[469]
If you do see 'em, they're probably just in town
[470]
to pick up some hog pellets.
[472]
This is the first place on this list
[474]
to get below $600 in rent.
[476]
You can expect to pay around $590
[478]
for a bedroom apartment in Decatur.
[480]
Throw in very low grocery costs,
[482]
and this could be a good place to save some money.
[485]
To live comfortably in Decatur, Alabama,
[487]
you need about $1,340 a month.
[490]
Rent is $590, like I'd said.
[493]
And the livability scores?
[494]
74, not a bad choice.
[496]
(upbeat music)
[499]

[503]

[506]
It really helps out the channel
[507]
when we got a whole bunch of subscribers,
[508]
and you leave comments,
[509]
and give the videos a big thumbs up.
[511]
All right, on to number one.
[515]
And number one, Columbia, Mississippi.
[518]
I'll wait for you to get back into your chair
[520]
and close your mouth.
[521]
In case you think you misheard something,
[523]
I did say Mississippi.
[525]
The Magnolia State is in the number one spot
[528]
for a few reasons.
[529]
Columbia's another nice southern town
[531]
with the main street lined with old,
[532]
well-kept brick buildings, for the most part.
[534]
They have some stinkers along main street,
[537]
but for the most part it looks pretty nice.
[539]
Columbia was officially incorporated on June 25th, 1819,
[543]
becoming the fourth municipality in the entire state.
[547]
It served as the temporary capital of Mississippi
[549]
from November, 1821 until early 1822.
[553]
This is also the birth place
[554]
and where Walter Payton was raised.
[556]
Sweetness, one of the greatest running backs
[559]
ever to play the game.
[559]
Yeah, he was born and raised here.
[561]
Columbia is about 45 minutes west of Hattiesburg
[564]
and not too far from the Louisiana border to the south.
[567]
The average rent in Columbia is $585 a month.
[570]
And to live comfortably here,
[571]
you only need $1,250, that's it.
[574]
There's a lot of things wrong with Mississippi.
[576]
Being expensive isn't one of 'em.
[578]
I mean, yeah, sure, down by the Gulf,
[580]
you can get into some expensive places,
[582]
but Mississippi is a very inexpensive state to live in.
[585]
(upbeat music)
[589]
All right, that's our list.
[590]
I hope you guys enjoyed it.
[591]
Hope you got some information out of it.
[594]
This is number three of this list.
[596]
We're gonna do at least three more of these videos,
[598]
so stay tuned for those.
[600]
I really hope these videos are helping some of you out.
[603]
I mean, there's a chance this country's gonna be heading
[605]
into some tough financial times
[607]
and this might help some of you,
[608]
and I really hope it does.
[610]
All right, everybody have a great day.
[612]
Be nice to each other.
[613]
(upbeat music)
