Best No-Fee Debit Cards for Kids & Teens - YouTube

Channel: Smart Family Money

[0]
As my kids have gotten older, they're getting聽 tired of managing their money as cash in a jar聽聽
[4]
and they wanted a debit card. I had heard of聽 the Greenlight debit card for kids but the least聽聽
[9]
expensive Greenlight plan is $5 a month and I'm a聽 bit of a cheapskate so I wanted to know if there聽聽
[15]
are any free options for debit cards for kids.聽 Thankfully, I found three really good options.聽聽
[21]
The first is the Step app. The Step app is an app聽 and a card that works for children over 13. If you聽聽
[28]
want quick, simple, and completely free, Step app聽 is a great option. Some pros to the Step app are聽聽
[34]
it takes only five minutes to set it up, it聽 is literally zero fees, and it builds credit聽聽
[39]
for the teen. There are also lots of options for聽 transferring money in and out of the Step account,聽聽
[43]
and it works really well if you have other family聽 members that want to send money to the kids, like聽聽
[48]
if you're in a situation of a blended family or聽 you have a grandparent that wants to send money to聽聽
[52]
the kids. Some negatives to the Step app are that聽 it is only for kids over 13 so it's not going to聽聽
[57]
work for everybody. Also it does not have a lot of聽 parental controls. Once the money is in the teen's聽聽
[63]
account, they can spend it however they want. If聽 you're comparing it to something like Greenlight,聽聽
[68]
Greenlight allows you to have very granular聽 parental controls. You can control it all the聽聽
[73]
way down to the store level, so you can say they聽 have $10 to spend at Target and $30 to spend at聽聽
[78]
gas stations. I don't feel like that kind of聽 control is necessary for my kids. I trust that聽聽
[83]
they're responsible enough with their money but聽 I understand that some parents of younger kids聽聽
[87]
might want that kind of control. If you want to聽 know more about the Step app, I did make a full聽聽
[91]
video review of that one and if you want to sign聽 up for a Step, please use my referral link down聽聽
[96]
below and you'll get $5 free in your new account.聽 So second option is the Capital One Money account.聽聽
[102]
Capital One Money is a full checking account that聽 is available for kids ages 8 and up, together with聽聽
[108]
an adult. It is really difficult to find checking聽 accounts that allow children under 13 so this聽聽
[113]
one's pretty nice that it allows kids as young as聽 eight. Some other positives to this account are it聽聽
[118]
has some really nice features, including setting聽 specific savings goals so if they want to save up聽聽
[123]
for a phone, they can set that goal inside their聽 app. It also includes lots of other nice checking聽聽
[128]
features like mobile check deposit and the ability聽 to direct deposit as they get older and have a聽聽
[133]
job. And when they age out of the account,聽 it converts into a very nice adult checking聽聽
[137]
account. The only negative I can really think of聽 the Capital One Money account is it doesn't have聽聽
[141]
the sort of parental controls like Greenlight聽 has. Once the money is in their account,聽聽
[145]
they can spend it pretty much however they want.聽 It's similar to Step in that way. If you want to聽聽
[148]
know more about the Capital One Money account and聽 how it compares to other teen checking accounts,聽聽
[153]
check out my video about best bank accounts for聽 kids and teens. I'll link to that one at the end.聽聽
[158]
The third option I found for a free debit card for聽 kids is Chase First Banking. Chase First Banking聽聽
[164]
is only available to people who already have a聽 Chase checking account and it can be for kids聽聽
[169]
ages six and up. Some positives of the Chase聽 First Banking account is that it does have all聽聽
[174]
those detailed parental controls like Greenlight聽 because it's actually powered by Greenlight. You聽聽
[179]
can specify specific stores that the children can聽 spend money at or specific categories. It also聽聽
[185]
has other nice features like specific savings聽 goals in the app. With Chase First Banking,聽聽
[189]
you can also use Chase ATMs for free.聽 Some negatives of Chase First Banking聽聽
[194]
is that it is not a regular checking account so聽 it doesn't have access to any kind of deposits.聽聽
[200]
If you do want a full-featured checking account聽 at Chase, they do have a high school checking for聽聽
[205]
kids age 13 and up and I talk more about聽 that in my other video. Another negative聽聽
[210]
to this account is it can only be managed by聽 one single parent. For Chase First Banking,聽聽
[214]
I would not recommend signing up for a Chase聽 checking account for the adult just to get聽聽
[218]
this kid's debit card because Chase checking聽 accounts all have pretty high fees. There聽聽
[223]
are ways that you can get around the checking聽 account fees at Chase, but it's a lot of hoops聽聽
[228]
to jump through just to get a kid's debit card.聽 But if you're already a Chase checking customer,聽聽
[232]
I think this is a really good option. In the end,聽 I decided to open up a Capital One Money account聽聽
[236]
for my 12-year-old and my 13-year-old and they're聽 very happy with them. For my 13-year-old daughter,聽聽
[241]
I also opened a Step account because it's so聽 convenient and it's helping her build credit.聽聽
