Yang: Amazon needs to pay their fair share - YouTube
Channel: Fox News
[0]
well last year Amazon the company made
[3]
eleven billion dollars in profit that's
[5]
one third of the GDP of the entire state
[8]
of Vermont it's a ton of money but
[11]
remarkably Amazon did not pay a single
[13]
dime of federal income tax and they're
[16]
not alone
[17]
dozens of profitable corporations paid
[18]
nothing in federal income taxes this
[20]
year Delta Airlines Chevron GM more some
[23]
of them are even getting tax rebates
[25]
they can apply later
[27]
it's a weird system we have our tax code
[29]
is broken but almost no one's saying
[31]
anything about it
[32]
Democratic presidential candidate Andrew
[34]
yang is he has a plan that he says would
[36]
change it we talked to him about his
[38]
plan a little while ago so you make the
[42]
case that these companies take Amazon
[45]
but it could be Chevron it could be GM
[46]
or profitable because of the investment
[49]
the United States is taxpayers in part
[51]
have given to them and they're giving
[53]
nothing in return how do we fix this
[55]
yeah Amazon's the most egregious example
[58]
where they're now soaking up twenty
[59]
billion dollars in business and causing
[61]
30% of American malls and stores to
[63]
close and taxpayers are seeing zero in
[65]
return so if you look at what other
[67]
advanced economies have done they
[69]
figured this out they've said look we
[71]
need to have a mechanism in place so
[72]
that Amazon is gonna pay its fair share
[74]
along with Netflix and Delton these
[77]
other companies that are paying zero in
[78]
taxes so what they've done is they've
[79]
adopted a value-added tax where then the
[83]
American people would get a tiny slice
[85]
of every Amazon sale every Google search
[87]
and on and on and it's very very hard
[88]
for companies like Amazon to game their
[90]
way out of a value-added tax system so
[93]
so why don't we have that it's a great
[96]
question I mean people have been
[98]
advocating for it for quite some time
[100]
and my campaign is advocating and
[102]
championing it right now because we we
[104]
need to wise up to the fact that
[106]
companies like Amazon are very smart and
[108]
moving their earnings through places
[110]
like Ireland where the American taxpayer
[112]
will see none of it where as a
[114]
value-added tax will make it impossible
[116]
for them to sell to us without paying
[118]
into our society their fair share you
[122]
mentioned the other costs that are often
[125]
not recorded that stem from Amazon's
[128]
business model the the the bankruptcy of
[131]
you know countless American businesses
[132]
but there's also
[134]
the fact that they basically subsidize
[137]
their labor costs using our social
[140]
services what's the cost of that do you
[142]
think oh it's in the billions or tens of
[144]
billions and there was one instance
[147]
where McDonald's actually was sending
[149]
its people instructions as to how to
[151]
file for various social services so
[153]
you're right that our social programs
[155]
have been subsidizing the low wage
[158]
patterns of many of these employers so
[162]
why are you the only candidate who's
[164]
thinking through what to do about this
[166]
it gets kind of weird I think it's weird
[170]
again all you have to do is look around
[171]
the world and say other countries other
[173]
advanced economies have figured this out
[175]
we're the only advanced economy that
[176]
does not have a value-added tax in place
[179]
and we need to make sure that the
[181]
American people are actually seeing some
[182]
of the gains from the incredible
[184]
innovation and value that companies like
[186]
Amazon and Salesforce and Netflix all of
[189]
whom paid zero in taxes last year are
[192]
getting away with really and they're
[194]
doing their job which is to pay as
[196]
little in taxes as possible I have to do
[197]
our job which is to make it so the
[199]
American people see our fair share so
[201]
does that I mean just to argue the other
[203]
side for a second would that increase
[206]
and presumably would increase the cost
[208]
to American consumers of goods right
[210]
well in some instances in some cases the
[214]
companies will find cost efficiencies or
[215]
eat part of it
[217]
and that's one reason why my campaign
[220]
wants to take that money that we're
[221]
getting from the value-added tax would
[222]
turn at the American people in the form
[224]
of a dividend because that's the most
[226]
direct way that we can actually have the
[228]
American people benefit the fear is that
[230]
even if we do end up increasing the tax
[233]
rate on some of these companies that the
[235]
American people won't benefit from that
[237]
because that money will be swallowed by
[239]
our political machine somehow
[241]
yeah it'll go into the the giant pipes
[243]
of DC never to be seen or heard from
[245]
again so the goal is to make sure that
[248]
doesn't happen by putting those economic
[251]
resources directly and they hands the
[252]
American people well wouldn't that be
[254]
bad for those of us who live in the
[256]
District of Columbia and own property
[257]
here I mean wouldn't it be better for us
[259]
if we could hoard all the money I have a
[261]
feeling you all would be fine because
[264]
you don't chuck watch the DC
[266]
I believe as the highest per capita
[267]
income in the country at this point so
[270]
you know of a feeling that the boutique
[272]
restaurants will still have plenty of
[274]
business okay it's because we're making
[276]
innovative products the world wants to
[277]
buy no sorries because we're taking your
[278]
money by force inordinate henry yang
[280]
certainly the most interesting person
[282]
running for president and i sounds like
[284]
a great idea to me I appreciate thanks
[285]
very much
[286]
Thank You Tucker see you soon
