[7]
type of motorcycle insurance to get
[9]
check out this short video
[18]
hey everybody barry here with the lawful
[20]
channel i'm a personal injury attorney
[22]
in chicago
[23]
and i've done a lot of motorcycle
[25]
accidents so i'm trying to share some
[26]
information about things that motorcycle
[28]
riders should and shouldn't do
[30]
before and after an accident in this
[32]
video i want to talk about
[34]
insurance coverage it's not sexy but
[37]
it's super important
[39]
if you haven't already would you
[40]
subscribe to our channel and if you have
[42]
any questions or comments
[43]
put them in the comments section below
[45]
if i can't help you i'll find someone
[46]
who can
[48]
alright whenever i get a call from
[50]
somebody who is just in an
[51]
accident they almost always tell me
[55]
i have full coverage they almost always
[58]
say that
[59]
and um almost inevitably they end up not
[62]
having full coverage
[63]
it just never fails i don't know why but
[66]
i think there's a misconception about
[68]
what full coverage insurance
[69]
means for motorcycle riders and
[72]
every state almost every state has
[75]
mandatory insurance limits in my home
[77]
state of illinois you have to have 25
[78]
000
[79]
in insurance and uh check the laws in
[82]
your state to see what
[84]
you are required to have but there are
[87]
six types of insurance that i think that
[89]
every motorcycle rider should have
[90]
and i'm going to tell you about them
[92]
right now all right the first type of
[93]
insurance
[94]
is what i already mentioned liability
[96]
insurance that's what we have to have
[98]
but liability insurance is just the tip
[101]
of the icebreak it's just the start
[103]
that's the insurance you have if you
[105]
cause damage to somebody else
[108]
well you're on the motorcycle they're in
[110]
a car
[111]
they're not going to be damaged they may
[113]
have some property damage but they're
[114]
not going to get hurt you're the one
[115]
that's
[116]
getting hurt so it's critical to have
[118]
these next types of insurance
[120]
so the second type of insurance you
[122]
should have is uninsured
[124]
and underinsured motorist coverage
[126]
sometimes called um
[128]
or uim this is this this is the most
[132]
important insurance you can have trust
[134]
me on this
[135]
there's a huge number of people driving
[137]
on our streets that are uninsured
[139]
all together and a lot of the rest of
[141]
the people have the minimum insurance
[143]
limits
[144]
well if you're in illinois for example
[146]
and you get hit by a car that has twenty
[148]
five thousand dollars insurance
[149]
that might not even cover your medical
[151]
bills for somebody who's on a motorcycle
[153]
so how do you recover for your pain and
[155]
suffering and the like
[157]
that's why it's critical to have um and
[159]
uim
[161]
now a lot of insurance companies don't
[162]
push this because insurance has become a
[165]
commodity and they try to
[166]
to sell you the the cheapest package to
[168]
keep you from going from
[170]
geico to another insurance company don't
[172]
fall for it
[173]
it's critical you have um and uim
[175]
coverage and at least
[177]
if you can have a hundred thousand
[178]
dollars that should protect you in the
[181]
event you get in an accident
[182]
with a driver who doesn't have enough
[184]
insurance to cover your damages
[186]
okay insurance type number three that
[188]
you should have
[189]
collision and comprehensive coverage i
[192]
can't tell you how many times i've
[193]
gotten a call
[194]
from somebody who said that they were
[195]
involved in an accident and they went to
[197]
their
[198]
own insurance company to get their
[199]
property damage fixed and they didn't
[200]
have collision coverage
[202]
that's why collision coverage is so
[204]
important and it's not that expensive
[206]
comprehensive coverage covers you if
[209]
you're not
[210]
involved in an accident or if maybe a
[212]
tree falls and hits your car or whatever
[214]
it is
[215]
either way if you can afford it add
[217]
collision and comprehensive coverage
[219]
to your insurance policy the fourth type
[221]
of insurance you should add is something
[223]
that i've seen a lot of videos and they
[224]
tell you it's not important it's called
[226]
med pay medical payment and coverage in
[229]
some states it's called pip
[231]
personal injury protection coverage and
[233]
the idea behind
[235]
med pay is that the first 2 500 or 5 000
[238]
or ten thousand dollars of your medical
[241]
expenses are covered by your insurance
[243]
now a lot of people think if they have
[245]
insurance health insurance they don't
[246]
need it
[247]
well you're still gonna have co-pays and
[249]
those co-pays are killer for people
[250]
especially if you're going to physical
[252]
therapy you've got to pay 20 or 40
[253]
dollars every time you got to go
[255]
so mid pay can really be an advantage
[258]
and it'll add like five or ten dollars
[259]
to your insurance policy
[261]
so it's my opinion that it's important
[264]
not to skip out on having a med
[265]
pay or having med pay coverage in your
[268]
policy
[269]
okay insurance coverage type number five
[272]
uh rental insurance if your bike goes
[275]
down
[276]
are you going to be able to get another
[277]
bike during the interim while your bike
[280]
is being repaired
[281]
check your policy to see if you have
[283]
this type of coverage and if not
[285]
see if you can add it okay and the sixth
[287]
type of insurance you're going to want
[289]
to have in your insurance policy
[291]
is gaap insurance gap it stands for
[295]
guaranteed asset protection
[297]
now sometimes you get this from state
[299]
farm or whatever but oftentimes you can
[300]
also get it at the
[302]
dealership when you buy your bike and
[304]
here's the thing about gap
[305]
gap coverage if you buy a thirty
[307]
thousand dollar harley
[309]
all right the second you take it off the
[310]
showroom floor loses value right
[313]
let's say uh six months later you're
[315]
driving the bike and you get in an
[316]
accident and the bike is totaled
[318]
well you still owe 30 thousand dollars
[320]
but the insurance company just valued
[321]
your bike
[322]
at two thousand dollars so there's an
[324]
eight thousand dollar balance that you
[325]
owe the finance company
[327]
who's going to pay that if you don't
[329]
have gap insurance coverage
[330]
you're going to pay that get these calls
[333]
all the time it's a lousy situation
[335]
gap insurance is really inexpensive so
[337]
consider getting it if you haven't
[339]
already
[340]
okay now it's time for your take on the
[342]
law did you have an
[343]
issue where you didn't have one of these
[345]
types of insurance
[346]
and you got an accident tell us about it
[349]
in the comments section below
[351]
