NOT Going to College was the BEST Decision of My Life - YouTube

Channel: Nathaniel Drew

[0]
I'm 21 years old and I would be a junior
[3]
if I were going to college but I don't
[5]
I decided three years ago that it wasn't
[7]
right for me that it wasn't a good use
[9]
of my time and energy and this isn't
[12]
just the gap your sort of situation I
[15]
have no interesting going period now I
[18]
come from a family where both of my
[19]
parents were the first ones in their
[21]
families to go to college
[23]
so is it arrogant for me to make this
[25]
decision to not go to college well I
[28]
don't think so and I'd like to share why
[29]
I think that first of all I just like to
[33]
say that if you are going to college and
[36]
you're really enjoying it and it's right
[37]
it feels right for you or you're trying
[39]
to be like a doctor or a lawyer or
[41]
something then this isn't for you a
[44]
college is right for some people but but
[47]
I think that if you're looking at
[50]
college as investment in your education
[53]
in your future I think there are better
[55]
alternatives my first reason for
[57]
deciding not to go to college is the
[58]
internet if you have a device that can
[60]
connect to the internet then you
[62]
essentially have access to all of human
[64]
knowledge that's the amazing power of
[66]
the internet it has democratized
[68]
information so the question then becomes
[70]
how self-disciplined are you how much
[72]
energy and effort are you willing to put
[74]
into diving deep into a topic there are
[76]
articles and forums and videos on pretty
[81]
much anything out there and that's how I
[82]
learned how to shoot and edit video and
[85]
that ended up leading to work as a
[87]
videographer and as an editor I finished
[89]
my high school diploma at the local
[91]
college so I did take a few college
[93]
classes and I can't tell you how many
[94]
times I took a class where the teacher
[96]
essentially just gave us the information
[99]
that was in the textbook that we had to
[101]
buy to take the class and nothing else
[103]
and that is a textbook that you could
[106]
buy on your own and absorb on your own
[108]
you could learn those things by yourself
[109]
I'm not saying all teachers are like
[111]
that and I'm not saying all classes are
[113]
like that but I think it illustrates the
[115]
point that with enough effort and like
[118]
self ownership a little bit of
[120]
responsibility you can you can learn
[122]
anything friends of mine that are going
[124]
to college have told me that they are
[125]
often forced to take and pay for classes
[129]
that they're not interested in or are
[131]
completely unrelated to what they're
[132]
there
[133]
for in the first place not only is that
[135]
a waste of your time and energy but it's
[136]
not really a recipe for success we live
[139]
in a specialized world it's way more
[141]
valuable to be really good at one thing
[143]
than kind of good at a bunch of things
[145]
all right so the second reason for why
[147]
not going to college made a lot of sense
[150]
to me honestly is the fact that the
[152]
stakes are a lot lower
[153]
I can fail in all kinds of different
[156]
stuff and not suffer anywhere near the
[158]
consequences the average student after
[161]
four years of schooling in the US has
[163]
over $30,000 in student debt basically
[166]
what that means is that as long as I'm
[168]
able to keep a net worth of zero so not
[171]
even make any money but as long as I can
[172]
stay away from losing any money and
[174]
getting into debt I am way ahead of the
[177]
curve and not having debt offers me
[179]
something else it offers me peace of
[181]
mind I can make all kinds of mistakes
[184]
and be you know a young adult trying to
[186]
figure things out in life without
[189]
suffering from mice mistakes you know
[192]
what I mean without feeling like I'm
[193]
digging myself into a hole that I cannot
[196]
get out of I could afford to leap into
[198]
freelancing as a filmmaker because I
[200]
wasn't scrabbled with debt and that gave
[202]
me the time to get things going and
[204]
improve and get better the argument
[206]
against that is that yes but a degree is
[209]
worth something which may be I mean yeah
[212]
it's worth something but I don't think
[214]
it's worth what you're paying for in
[216]
most cases
[217]
okay so let's create a scenario here
[219]
where you're paying twenty thousand
[220]
dollars a year to go to school for four
[223]
years
[223]
we're not even consider going out of
[225]
state or going to a high-end university
[227]
because that would cost a lot more like
[230]
40 or even $60,000 per year think about
[233]
how much you can do how much you can
[235]
accomplish in a year as a young healthy
[237]
adult with $20,000 and a little bit of
[241]
discipline instead of studying Spanish
[243]
in college for example you could very
[245]
easily go live in Ecuador or Argentina
[249]
or Spain learn the language much more
[252]
intimately have an incredible cultural
[255]
experience and spend less money would be
[257]
less expensive that's what I did I
[259]
didn't need
[259]
for years I went to live in Argentina
[261]
for four months and in that time not
[263]
only was I able to learn a ton about the
[266]
language and get much better at it but I
[268]
learned a lot about myself and it was an
[269]
amazing experience overall in terms of
[272]
growth and in terms of exposure to new
[274]
things and that whole experience cost me
[276]
around five thousand dollars so way way
[280]
less than the 80 grand that it would
[281]
cost you to do four years of schooling
[284]
to get a Spanish degree in college
[286]
instead of studying business for four
[288]
years you could start your own company
[289]
with twenty thousand dollars four times
[292]
and have the luxury to fail three of
[294]
those times and again this is my opinion
[296]
but if you don't know what you want to
[298]
do which is most people most people do
[300]
not know what they want to do I think
[301]
it's better to experiment and try things
[303]
out for as little money as possible than
[306]
to be doing it and spending all kinds of
[309]
money that you don't necessarily have
[310]
and putting yourself in a vulnerable
[312]
position for a while I thought that I
[314]
wanted to be a sound guy and you know be
[316]
like the guy that holds the boom on set
[318]
and it turns out I don't and that didn't
[321]
cost me anything to find out all I
[323]
needed to do was try it a couple of
[324]
times and see if I liked it and you know
[326]
what else I found out and this was
[328]
life-changing you can get paid to learn
[330]
I was a PA for a long time so our
[333]
production assistant on film sets so I
[336]
would help out in any way that I could
[338]
oftentimes it was kind of lame right so
[340]
I was going and getting people coffee I
[342]
was running to Target to pick up props
[344]
but it was an incredible opportunity
[347]
experience to learn and observe from
[350]
other people around me and figure out if
[352]
I liked working on commercials or if I
[355]
liked working on movies and to ask
[357]
questions and get paid all the while
[361]
doing that once you realize that that's
[363]
a possibility
[364]
why would you do it any other way
[365]
there's another advantage career
[367]
momentum if you're lucky enough to
[369]
graduate from college and go straight
[370]
into a fulfilling job I commend you but
[373]
that's not usually how it works just
[375]
because you have a title doesn't mean
[376]
the world owes you anything and I found
[378]
especially as a freelancer in particular
[380]
but I think this applies to anybody that
[382]
it takes time it takes hustling and
[385]
patience to get things off the ground
[386]
and so in this sense the fact that I
[388]
gave myself the time to pick things up
[391]
and figure out what I'm good at and
[393]
you're out how I like to work I feel
[395]
like I got this big head start because
[396]
all the while all of my friends are
[398]
going to school I'm doing what they're
[401]
going to be doing once they graduate the
[403]
argument that college is great for
[404]
meeting people and networking is a valid
[407]
one I'm not even going to disagree with
[408]
that but it's not like it suddenly
[410]
becomes impossible to do that once
[412]
you're out of college I found that going
[415]
to events inviting people to coffee or
[417]
lunch or interning at different
[420]
companies has been a fantastic way for
[421]
me to expand my network and to find new
[424]
work opportunities and ultimately I
[426]
found that through research it didn't
[428]
feel like college really prepares you
[430]
for the rest of real life my goal in
[434]
creating this was not at all to make
[436]
anybody regret their decisions or to
[438]
shame anybody it's just to share my
[440]
point of view my way of seeing things
[442]
and that's the whole point of college
[444]
right intellectual diversity if you
[450]
enjoyed this video hit that subscribe
[452]
button a lot more videos coming soon I
[454]
talk a lot about mental clarity and
[457]
stuff like digital minimalism

and I'm excited to share that with the
[461]
world so if that interests you stick
[463]
around and finally if you believed in my
[465]
message I want to support this channel
