Were bribes behind lack of enforcement in Detroit's illegal billboard case? - YouTube
Channel: Click On Detroit | Local 4 | WDIV
[0]
there are major developments tonight in
[2]
a story the defenders first exposed all
[4]
the way back in 2016
[6]
hundreds of billboards hanging on the
[8]
sides of buildings illegally in the city
[11]
of Detroit and the company putting up
[12]
those billboards is making some big
[14]
money
[14]
now there's questions about possible
[16]
bribes involving two very prominent
[18]
Detroiters let's bring in defender Kevin
[20]
Dietz he has been working in this story
[21]
in the city is really dragging its feet
[23]
on this yeah it's been over a year and a
[26]
half since our first story ran and now
[28]
finally enforcement is underway and the
[31]
US Attorney's Office is asking for
[33]
copies of our stories as well as
[35]
documents received under the Freedom of
[36]
Information Act and to video depositions
[39]
one from a city council member the other
[41]
from a highly respected businessman
[44]
billboard ads plastered the buildings in
[46]
downtown Detroit the defenders told you
[48]
all but three were illegal back in early
[51]
2016 and that the city had dragged its
[54]
feet on enforcement until 2018 now the
[58]
feds want to know if there's more to
[60]
this multi-million dollar illegal
[62]
billboard business I do inquiry to video
[72]
depositions in the first Detroit City
[75]
Councilman Gabe Leland is asked under
[77]
oath about accepting bribes from
[79]
businessman Dennis Archer jr. can you
[82]
answer the question and ask the question
[83]
again please have you ever received a
[85]
monetary or other bribe from Dennis
[89]
Archer jr. for your vote on any issue
[91]
that came before the Detroit City
[93]
Council I refuse to answer the question
[95]
based on my v amount of rise Leland has
[97]
the question repeated three times then
[99]
leads the Fifth Amendment which protects
[102]
him from answering questions that could
[103]
lead to self-incrimination that caught
[106]
the eye of federal investigators do you
[108]
feel I can't ask questions about
[110]
ignition media this is the second video
[112]
deposition it's Dennis Archer jr. a
[115]
highly respected businessman answering
[117]
questions under oath in it he's asked
[119]
about councilman Gabe Leland pleading
[121]
the fifth in regards to pain and bribes
[123]
archers attorney refuses to let him
[125]
answer the question saying it's not a
[127]
fair question under the scope of the
[129]
lawsuit he's there to testify in and the
[131]
judge agreed the question went on
[133]
sir Leland's attorney says it's
[136]
ridiculous to even consider Archer would
[138]
be involved in wrongdoing
[139]
Archer believes disgruntled businessman
[141]
christopher Williams and activist Robert
[143]
Davis of a felons crusade for equality
[146]
honesty and truth are creating a smear
[149]
campaign to get even with Archer for
[151]
developing the building Williams ran his
[154]
bar out of why has he been allowed to
[157]
break the law very openly without any
[162]
interference Robert Davis says this is
[165]
about Archer being a highly paid
[166]
consultant for a major national
[168]
billboard company with multiple ads in
[170]
Detroit that were in violation in
[172]
councilman Gabe Leland being the
[174]
chairman of the committee in charge of
[176]
the billboard ordinance ads can range
[178]
from 1 million to 3 million dollars a
[180]
year in revenue is very suspicious you
[184]
never cert v unless you know you've done
[186]
something wrong in addition to the
[189]
inquiry by the US Attorney's Office
[191]
Robert Davis filed a civil lawsuit
[192]
regarding the billboards and just
[194]
yesterday a judge ruled Dennis Archer
[196]
jr. to be removed as a defendant the
[198]
case will move forward against the city
[200]
of Detroit so what's the city saying
[202]
about this right now Kevin yeah so the
[204]
city says that all of these illegal
[206]
billboards are now down there aren't any
[208]
more in the city they say that the US
[211]
Attorney's Office has not contacted them
[213]
for any information so they're getting
[215]
all that information from us and from
[217]
Robert Davis and his attorney and in
[219]
terms of moving forward is there any
[220]
kind of protocol in terms of stopping
[222]
this from happening in the future yes
[224]
Jose there is an ordinance that says
[226]
they are not allowed and they started
[228]
trying to redo this ordinance about six
[230]
years ago and they still have no
[232]
agreement on how to get it done look at
[236]
them and you take them for granted don't
[237]
think twice about it yeah thank you
